I answered your question in the general section.

Hello I'm new to the epic 4g and now that I have it rooted and ready to rom, I've read on different threads where people talk about being either "ext4" or rfs. What does this mean? I'm afraid that ill do something wrong and mess up my phone. if somebody could explain to me the difference it would be greatly appreciated thanks!

EXT4 and RFS are file systems. Just about every Epic rom other than Stock uses EXT4 because it's the faster file system.
Oh ok that makes sense. So then how would I go about converting to ext4? Would I need to do this before I flash a rom?

Installing clockworkmod 3.0 automatically puts you on the EXT4 file system.
Sweet. Thanks man one more question, what's up with all the ECO5, EB13 stuff and something about updating your modem?

EC05 is the most recent update. You have to update your modem through ODIN in order to have data/ service work correctly.
Thanks for the info

You don't HAVE to use Odin to update the modem, there is a flashable zip around here somewhere also. Plus if your comming from stock you should be able to update to stock ec05 OTA (over the air) if your not already on it. To check what build/modem your already on go to settings-about phone-baseband version
I just checked and I'm on ECO5 right now

Then you're good to go.
Ok guys, I need a little help understanding something. I have heard multiple times that you can't flash a kernel and recovery separately and this is contrary to everything I know about Android structure. Is this something specific to Samsung phones or is this complete BS? I have owned only HTC phones before this one and every one had separate things you could flash independently: kernel, recovery, radios and roms (though obviously roms came with kernels).
There are clearly differences between HTC and Samsung because I never needed anything like Odin before, but I just assumed that was something people used until a custom recovery was created or ported and never used again. Is there any reason we can't have the kernels and recoveries on separate partitions and not have to be flashed together? I feel like I'm missing something here.
Thanks in advance for the education.

You should be able to we just don't have the option available yet. On the original epic we rooted by flashing recovery in odin and then booting into cwm and flashing gmsu.zip and we were done without changing the stock kernel. I do not know why we can't do it for this phone.

Didn't realize Q & A had been created. I just had to look in the browser to confirm you were correct because the XDA app doesn't show it.
Jerdog, feel free to move this over. I'd like to keep this conversation going and get some traction on this.

It is being looked into. It seems the touch is different from other phones. You could do it on the epic. This phone is using it differently. From what I understand it is a backup of the kernel and overwrites on every boot.

Just popping over from the Infuse, saw this question, so here ya go. This is a Samsung thing. Yes, recovery partition is simply just a backup of the kernel partition. The kernel is actually kernel + initramfs image. The initramfs image holds the recovery binary. So what happens is, the kernel bootstraps, uncompresses the initramfs, runs the init, and then depending on the mode of boot, either runs the recovery.rc (which fires up adb and recovery). the lpm.rc (off mode charging basically) or the init.rc which bootstraps the rest of the Android system.
Very helpful info Bozo. Thanks for the detailed response.

I just seen a stockish ei22 mtd rom in the dev section

Your choices are only CM7, MIUI, or the new stock MTD ROM. You have to repartition using Odin to go back to other ROMs besides those.

If you want to run an ei22 based rom that is not available on mtd yet, dl the ei22 mtd build and delete /system folder on there. Then add /system folder of the ei22 based rom of your choosing and bam! Mtd
Edit: I am 90% sure this will work. If it does, let me know and I will post in general.

Is it possible for a stock rom to be made to repartition the phone to go back to BML w/o use of odin?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Hmmmm...that's a good question. It might not be possible because BML is proprietary and MTD is Open Source.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Not possible. For the reason stated above, no way of knowing how.

i think you would have to add an over-write command in the script.. cause thats part of "logic - write- instruction"
What is the best way to get back to a stock rom from a phone flashed with CleanGB v1.1.2[MTD]?
Thanks.
Odin would be the best way, you could have flashed this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461377 but you're on MTD

Go to android development and get the official stock el30 .tar by rodderick and flash that through odin with repartition checked and viola doneskee
If you don't understand that let me know and ill go into more detail.

Thanks for the replies guys.
@masaidjet - Sadly I was not the one that flashed it to begin with, but I'm the one tasked to fix it.
@Big Goron - that is what I was looking for, think I can take it from here but will gt in touch if I have questions/issues.
Thanks again...
Dont use the USB cable that came with your phone.....if you dont know that by now.
