So I just switched from a hero to an evo today. Hero was rooted with cm6. I really gotta get this thing rooted. I love how fast and responsive the phone, but cant stand having it stock unrooted. The reason I didn't just go use one of the methods already posted is because I believe that with recent OTA updates I may have to do something different? I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to all of this, but I understand the basics and did fine with lots of flashing on the hero.
The EVO is 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.09.1
Build and Sofware number 3.30.651.2
PRI 1.77_003
Any advice on which method I can safely use would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
I believe that you have the upgraded hboot version so be care full on using some of the methods.. ill post a link in a sec
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo
Right on. I was looking through this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
but I'm having sort of a hard time understanding the prerequisites if it even is the correct and only option I have
That's exactly the link I was gonna post. Look at what you hboot v is. Turn your phone off and turn it back on while holding the lower button down. The hboot version should be round
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo
2.02.0000
So if I go with that method, do I have to do the whole S-off thing beforehand? That's where I'm confused. I only have the phone's drivers installed on my pc that come htc sync or whatever. I installed them for my hero a while back
There. Tell me what you don't get and I will try my best
Prerequsites:
Extract to a folder of your choice. I recommend the root of C:\ into a folder of your choice or on the desktop. Make sure you have the drivers installed for your phone (recommend: SDK Drivers, unrevoked hboot drivers) and USB debugging is on. If possible master reset your phone. At the least reboot the damn thing. This was setup for people running windows, if you have access to it do it on a 32bit version. Use the adb.exe included with the package Oh and Read the FAQ and Warnings for f-sakes
1) Make sure usb debugging is on, and plug in your phone, DO NOT MOUNT USB
2) Open a command prompt and change to where ever you extracted the files to.
3) Type the following (this must be excuted from the folder you extracted to)
4) No Errors hopefully. Now lets change some permissions
5) You shouldnt see any confirmations or any messages. You should still be in the shell. Now its times for the magic....lets root that shell
6) It should kick you out and display some messages on the screen...just not errors. Lets double check that root! Type the following:
7)You Should see a "#". This means you have root if you see a "$" or some other error message. Reboot your phone, check your drivers, usb debugging and cable and start over. If you got a "#" You can Proceed. You should still be in the shell at a "#" If not start over...Otherwise
8) Now we are going to reboot your phone into the boot loader to flash the first PC36IMG.zip. You should still be in the shell So Type:
9) Once your phone is in the boot loader highlight bootloader, and press the power button. It will load the PC36IMG File...When it ask you to flash press VOL-UP. You will notice that it says bootloader bypassed and maybe some other errors. Dont worry this is normal. Once the flash of the file is done it will ask to reboot, Select NO by Pressing VOL-DOWN. Now some people have gotten some errors here and there during the flashing just continue as normal.
10) You should still be in the boot loader at this point. Scroll down to recovery and press the power button. When you see the red triangle. Type the following:
With any luck you should be at a recovery (green screen with text)
11) Select enable USB-MS. This will mount your sdcard. Look in the root of your sdcard and you should have two files. One named PC36IMG.zip and one named PC36IMG-MR.zip. Rename the file named PC36IMG.zip to PC36IMG-ENG.zip and then rename PC36IMG-MR.zip to PC36IMG.zip when your done follow the instructions on your phone to disable usb (press power) then proceed to step 12
12) Now Select flash zip from the menu and choose unrevoked-forever.zip. Wait for it to complete. Select Reboot from the menu.
Now pay attention. It might kick you back into:
BOOT LOADER: See 12A
ROM: See 12B
WHITE HTC SCREEN: See 12C
12A) Ok so you got kicked to the boot loader. It should scan your card and find the PC36IMG.zip chose yes to flash this file and when it ask you to reboot....reboot by pressing vol-up....Proceed to step 13
12B) Ok so the phone booted into a rom. Power the phone off. Then repower the phone on pressing power and vol-down at the same time. It should take you into the bootloader and scan your card and find the PC36IMG.zip chose yes to flash this file and when it ask you to reboot....reboot by pressing vol-up....Proceed to step 13
12C) Ok so the phone is stuck at a white htc screen. Power the phone off by pulling the battery. Then repower the phone on pressing power and vol-down at the same time. It should take you into the bootloader and scan your card and find the PC36IMG.zip chose yes to flash this file and when it ask you to reboot....reboot by pressing vol-up....Proceed to step 13
13) Ok your phone is rooted now, and you should be inside the rom. The rom you just flashed is the stock unrooted rom with the modified recovery. Download a rom of your choice copy it to the root of your sd card and flash it. But type the following first
14) You Should be in the recovery menu now (green text screen). Do a backup by navigating the menu. Once thats done, follow the on screen instructions and reboot or flash a rom of your choice. Reboot. If you flashed a custom rom cool. If not no big deal eitherway. Do a PRL/Profile update while in the rom after the phone is done rebooting. Your Done.
15) Read the FAQ for questions

that is correct. if you have a mac, i am building a full 3-command root kit for mac. i still need 1 more tester. if you have a mac, this will be the easiest way. will build one for pc as soon as the mac one is ready.

that is the exact reason i want him as a tester. all it requires is adb. then type part1. hit vol up. then type part2. flash unrevoked-forever. type part3. hit vol up. fully rooted and s-off. done.
Okay.. its his choice. Lol you don't even know if he has a Mac

The part about unrevoked hboot drivers. Do I need to get something other than just the standard HTC drivers that I have then? Also I ran unrevoked3 on the phone a little earlier and I'm not sure if that will affect anything with this process. Do I need to someone do unrevoked forever in order to use this root method before I start typing the commands or does it just automatically do it through the zip file I download from the thread? Also, not a mac user, so I don't need to worry about that.
not many unrooted 2.02 hboot evo owners do. i'm taking every one i can get. i just need 1 conformation, and i will start on the pc version. mac is much easier to write than pc.

So if I use this and it works, I cannot flash roms with different kernels right? I have to be careful with what I use I assume. And once rooted, is it pretty similar to clockwork as far as flashing goes?
btw thanks to the both of you. the help is much appreciated
I do not know the recovery that's used. No offense but it sucks that you have the new hboot. Ha.ha. okay sorry. Lol
Edit you can flash kernels but don't. Because most if not all are for hardware 003 so if you see specific new hardware kernels you could flash those. And remember, read that the Tom you want is for 004 before flashing or else things like your cam wont work.

Hey I can test for you if you'd like, I'm running snoweopard and already have the sdk. I'm also rooted already but I can undo the root. Feel free to let me know.
i have one tester right now. if my beta works and he gains root, i will need a new tester. i cant upgrade to 2.02 myself because i have the old hw 0003. i'm not sure if you want to unroot for something that might or might not work though. thanks for the generous offer.

He can flash kernels if he wants. It's up to him to see which work and which don't. For example I'm on 0003 but most roms don't work fully without flashing kernels.

How to get S =off and superuser permissions
Make sure you are on 2.2.1 software and fastboot is turned off, usb debugging is turned on and phone not connected to computer via usb cable... before u attempt this.
First make sure you have visionary(downlod link) and terminal emulator(market) installed.
http://android.modaco.com/content/software/320350/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Place the visionary download file into sdcard and install the apk using astro file manager.
Root.rar (all files plus a script to make things a little easier. )
http://www.mediafire.com/?flit79p2y069bb3
md5sum: 46361b0cc8652d88688c0ab66d44950b
1. Download the root.rar file and unzip it to /sdcard on your device.(it should be a folder after unzip.[place the whole folder called root directly into sdcard])
2. Run VISIONary to gain temp root. Open visionary and check "set system r/w after root" then click on "temproot"..screen will go blank..thats normal.
Now open terminal and run some commands.
Terminal Emulator Method
3a. Start terminal emulator up on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/root" + enter.
c. Type "sh root.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the on screen prompts.
Turn off your phone and hold vol down and power. on the top u will see s =off.
select "fastboot" then shutdown or powerdown. Power you phone back on.
Open terminal and typr "su"..it will say permission denied. Thats normal
Now open visionary again. Make sure "set system r/w after root" checked then click on "temproot"..screen will go blank.. thats normal. Now click on "Attempt Permroot now" phone is reboot and you are all set
Go back into terminal and type "su" and it will say user permissions granted.

Flash a Custom ROM----Make sure fastboot is off and usb debugging is on.
1. Before we flash anything lets flash clockwork so that you are able to get into recovery. From the market download Rom manager(free). Open rom manager and click on "flash clockworkmod recovery". Wait few min. Rom manager will download and flash clockwork. Turn your phone off and Hold vol down and power. In the hboot menu select recovery and then the phone will restart. You will get a phone with yellow triangle error. Thats normal. Don't panic. Take the battery out for couple on min. Turn the phone back on. Open Rom manager again. Now click on "flash clockworkmod recovery". It will flash the recovery second time. We are doing this to make the clockworkmod stick. Now turn the phone off and see if you can get into recovery again. It should work.
2. Make sure you are permrooted and S =off. Also make sure you are able to get into recovery before you start flashing stuff. Download rom from XDA developers and save it to your computer.
3. Once it is saved, plug in your phone via USB cable and mount the SD card so we can save files to the sd card.
4. Copy the ROM’s .zip file over to the root of the sd card (NOT in any folders on the sd card, just on the root of the card) (do NOT extract it, leave it as a .zip).
5. In the custom recovery screen, select Nandroid then Backup and backup your current ROM.
6. Then select Wipe Data and wipe caches.
7. Then select Apply ".zip from sd card" and choose the ROM you downloaded earlier.
8. Once it is done flashing, click reboot system. Once it reboots, you are all set. Enjoy!

Well I thought since he is going to the extent on detailing all the steps he might as well talk about the ROM Manager and recovery. Someone will say how do I get in to custom recovery if it is not mentioned that it is needed. If you are going the detail route then this should be included IMHO. I think this will help many new users.
I meant as far as the s off and rom flashing. I agree with you though that cw needs to be outlined a little better I just didn't mention it b/c he said he was going to add it later.

I can't really use my phone at this point.. any suggestions?
thanks.

I'm using the GingerVillain rom, but I was wondering is there a way I can make my device S-OFF whilst using this ROM?

I'm trying to install CWM 3.0.0.5 from recovery, it comes up in the new colours after installing, but on the next reboot it's back to the old one? Do I need to root again with unrevoked using the 3.0.0.5 zip file?
Also is there any was I can run alpharev without having to burn to a CD? I've tried running a virtual box but no luck?
Thanks for reading hope somebody can help.

1. This is because the rom manager doesnt support CWM 3.0.0.5 yet but only: 2.5.x.x
2. The CD option is 100% working and it is quick and almost safe imo.

You can burn it on pendrive as bootable usb drive, or use VM like Parallels Desktop (i used it, and worked fine)
I used virtual box, but I had to load specific drivers, and follow alternate instructions. A total PITA, but it works.
I only used UnRevoked because I forgot which other program I used for my previous phone. Afterwards, I now have an app called zysploit running all the time ((((

Mind helping me out a bit?
I download a package called "universal usb installer 1.8" Do a search for it. Now, listen up.
As far as I can remember, after extracting, I had to tell Device Manager to install the driver specifically, Not browse for them. Because windows will always look for a signed driver. I had to ignore the normal message that it wasn't signed.
If I'm not mistaken, you need to load the Android Bootloader interface (with phone plugged in, USB debugging enabled)
This "should" allow unrevoked to interface with the phone.
Hello xda, in accordance with the signup video I have scoured the earth looking for an answer. However I'm not sure how much necro posting is frowned upon here so I thought it would be safer to just start a new thread.
I have an HTC Desire HD from Telus(for use on the Rogers network). I am in the process of rooting it but have encountered a problem. I can gain temporary root on the terminal emulator(Because the $ turns to #) however when attempting to run clockwork flash clockworkmod recovery I get the error "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"
I get the same error when attempting the "Fix Permissions" so I'm currently at a loss of what to do.
I have the ninja superuser icon in the apps menu however when I open it the screen is blank. I am unsure if this is how it is supposed to be or not. I have seen several references to a permission box that pops up during some of the steps but I haven't seen that at all.
I've tried four separate methods, the last of which coming from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954997
I am currently at step B.d which involves running the S-OFF tool and Easy Radio OFF tool. But still clockwork will not flash a backup, and when I restart the phone I can not get super user to work on the terminal (ie by typing su) and must use the rage method to regain temporary root.
Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but when I restart the phone and attempt to boot in recovery mode, the volume buttons don't allow me to select other options, and instead the phone just forces me to reboot normally.
Some more facts:
model HTC Desire HD A9191
Build # 1.32.405.6
Android 2.2
Anymore info I'm probably forgetting just ask away!
So my question is: Can anyone identify what the issue is?
Thanks much for taking the time to read my question.
Does visionary not work for you?
I've seen that alot of success has been gained by doing temp root and perm root through it?
It does sound like the rage method might not be working for you from what I can tell..
I do want to check all the steps you followed before where fine?

Visionary was how I rooted mine. Worth a try if you havent tried it: http://android.modaco.com/content/software/320350/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Thanks for the visionary suggestion, but Visionary still isn't working :/
Has visionary been tested with the Telus Desire? I heard there was a difference. What happens when I attempt to temproot is it moves to a blank screen then goes back to the menu.
When I used visionary on 1.32 it did not always work first try ... generally always worked after 2 runs. then used it to perm root
It works. You do not have Telus software in your phone anymore.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Try my method (I made it because the methods I found for my Telus desire HD were flaky at best and only got temproots from it.)
Since you already flashed to 1.32 start at step 2
If you want to go gingerbread, dl the 2.36.405 ruu and use that and your pc to put 2.3.3 on it (dont worry, it works fine, i was using it since it came out and built a rom based off that, kingdom, and pyramid roms for my own sense 3 rom) and use the gingerbreak method.

Disable your Antivirus (Avast say's its malicious), Norton or F-Prot says its clean.
and Internet Explorer 9 says its not trustworthy (because there's .bat files in the zip), Firefox says its fine.
There is no malicious code in the zip, you can edit each individual batch file in the Resource folder to see the code. Its very simple and basic.
I disabled my antivirus, but when I run Install Visionary nothing happens. The CMD window opens and says it has been succesfuly installed but nothing has been installed, and nothing appeared in the app menu.
Edit: I went into the resource folder and then followed the steps from there and everything worked, except I still don't have the # symbol in terminal (even when entering "su") and ROM manager still gives me the same error.

Once visionary is installed, and you run it, and everything is done exactly whats described in my 9 easy steps thread (along with outcomes along the way), then you should be perm rooted, with s-off and eng-off with supercid.
I managed to install visionary with your method, however when running Eng-S I encountered the error "Bootloader corrupt, DO NOT REBOOT! Seek help from XDA!"
Help?
Edit: Followed the advice here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14936635 and s-off worked properly this time. Hopefully my DHD won't brick on reboot. Could super user be the problem? it never asks me for permissions or anything, all I have is an icon and a blank screen when i open the app.
Edit2: Rom manager took three attempts to install correctly. Still the same result "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"

looks like the superuser application isnt running properly.
I would use the 1.32 ruu (not the pd98img.zip off the sd) and then from a fresh install (without resoring any data other than google account to visit the market)
run through the visionary, s-off tool, eng-off tool, and then reboot again, then install rom manager from the market, run it, it should ask you for permission and may hang for a second, and then say you have about 5 seconds to allow root permissions.
Then install rom's away. if you're not into making seperate rom specific app folders on your sd card, google JSL Er3BuS. its a sense 3 rom without the extra scripts.
How do I install the 1.32 RUU if I can't install it from the SD card?

It is very easy mate,
1. Download the RUU of your choice from http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Ace
2. Put your phone in charge mode only with USB debug on.
3. Make sure you have HTC Sync installed on your PC, and close HTC Sync application from your system bar in windows (make sure that HTC Sync is not running as all you need is the driver)
4. Right click on the RUU file and select "Run as Administrator"
5. Connect your DHD by the USB cable to your PC.
6. Click some boxed and "next"s.
7. Waiting!
8. Profit!
I tried following the steps here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890
But got the error "ERROR [120]: Low MAIN BATTERY POWER. When the battery is above 30%.
This is getting ridiculous lol
I'm sorry I'm such a bother.

Tried this, now the update process has taken 45 minutes.
Well, it took 5 hours to finish, but finish it finally did. Rom manager installed no problem, flashed no problem and I am in the process of installing cryogen. Thanks everyone for their help and kind words.
Fingers crossed cryogen works.
I'm going away for the weekend, but when I come back I'll update this thread with the full details of what went down so hopefully someone will be helped by my many many hours spent raging.

The purpose of this guide is to walk you through the process of rooting your phone running 2.3.3 ONLY! I will do the best I can to make this as painless as possible and help you achieve your goals of S-Off.
***THIS THREAD IS ONLY FOR OBTAINING S-OFF, OBTAINING ROOT, AND INSTALLING CLOCKWORK MOD RECOVERY! ANY QUESTION REGARDING INSTALLING ROMS DO NOT BELONG HERE AND WILL NOT BE ANSWERED! ONLY ISSUES REGARDING ROOT WILL BE ANSWERED BY MYSELF OR OTHER MEMBERS.***
What you will need: (** = File is attached to OP)
Windows XP or higher (Thats all I have, someone else with MAC and/or Linux will need to assist and I can add it to the OP)
http://revolutionary.io/ .:UPDATE:. PRE4 now available
This site is where you will download the rooting tools and obtain a beta key. When you click on the download button for your OS, make sure you view the box that pops up requesting your OS version, phone model, HBoot version, and phone serial number. Without doing this you cannot root your phone so do it or you are screwed. There are two ways to get your phone serial number: 1) Remove the battery and look at the white sticker or 2) On your phone, go to Settings -> About Phone -> Phone Identity and under Device Serial Number you will see it. After you receive your code COPY AND PASTE it onto a word document or notepad because there are times when you will get confused with the font type from the Revolutionary site. Example, in my beta key, the lower case L looks exactly like the capital I and it threw me off. Also, the key IS case sensitive so keep that in mind.
If running windows, you will need these drivers:
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
If running Linux, reports show that you do not need any drivers.
If running Mac OS, I currently do not know so someone please let me know and I will update.
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip **
This file is required to obtain ROOT AFTER you have S-Off.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33327355/cwm-4.0.1.4-vivow.img **
These two items are in case Revolutionary tool fails to install CWM on your phone OR if you want to do this offline at another location. Fastboot and abd tool is the software that will take the img file of CWM and flash it onto your phone after S-OFF is obtained.
Prepping your Phone:
Turn off FAST BOOT in the settings located: SETTINGS -> POWER
Turn on Unknown Sources: SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONS
Turn on USB Debugging: SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONTS -> DEVELOPMENT
Installing Root:
1 - First, install the HTC drivers on your computer. It is a very simple step and you should have no issues doing this at all. Also look at your installed programs list and confirm HTC Sync is not installed. This will stop your device from being detected by Revolutionary to other problems when rooting.
2 - Extract the Fastboot and ABD zip file onto the root of your local disk drive (ex. C:\android-win-tools )
3 - Copy/Cut and Paste the CWM img file into the Fastboot and ABD folder (ex. C:\android-win-tools\cwm-4.0.1.4-vivow.img) Doing this will prep your PC to flash CWM in the event the Revolutionary tool does not download and install it.
4 - Place phone in "Disk Drive" mode then Copy/Cut and Paste the root su zip file (do not extract it) onto the root of your SDCard on your phone (ex. x:\su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip )
5 - Place phone in "Charge Only" mode. A lot ot people run into issues and not realize this was not selected.
6 - Run the Revolutionary file now that everything is set to go.
7 - You will get a prompt to enter your beta code. This is the code you received when you downloaded the revolutionary file and entered the information to obtain the beta key.
8 - Sit back and WAIT while the application does what is needed. This process will take anywhere from 3 to 5minutes so be PATIENT.
9 - Upon completion, you will get a prompt to install CWM. Say yes here! Once done skip to step 10.
9a - If the revolutionary app crashes or fails to download/install, leave your phone in the state it is (HBoot mode and should say "Fastboot USB". Open a command prompt in windows (Start - Run - type CMD).
9b - If you did exactly as told, type "CD.." until you see "C:\"
9c - Type the following:
CD android-win-tools
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-vivow.img
9d - This process takes about 30sec max. Almost done!!!
10 - On your phone, back track to the main menu of HBoot using the volume keys and Power button and select recovery (2nd Option). In a few seconds your will be in CWM.
11 - As long as you copied the signed zip file to the root of your sdcard, perform the following:
"Install Zip From SDCard" (5th Option)
"Choose Zip From SDCard" (2nd Option)
Select the root/su zip file (su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip)
Choose Yes and wait.
Back track to main menu and reboot
12 - Give yourself a pat on the back for paying attention and have a cookie!
I am typing this on my tablet/phone/pc so if an error exists, please let me know right away and I will update the OP. Again, questions here are ONLY for rooting. Anything else...kick yourself in the head, do a real search, and post if needed.

The incredible 2 is definitely an option when obtaining a beta key. Unless you are refering to something else?

My bad, my work computer is crappy, the 2 does not show up on my browser lol
NICE, this thread should be sticky.
On a side note, make sure you have your phone connected to wifi or 3G if you want the revolutionary tool to download and install the CWM automatically. If not then you would have to flash the CWM manually per the instruction from OP.

I went to the site just now and HTC DROID Incredible 2 is the 6th option down in the device list. If it still doesn't show up, test another pc or try it on your phone. All you need is the key anyways.

I will say it is okay as this happens to my PC as well. The files still transfer and CWM flashes through fastboot as well.

Mmk. I downloaded ROM Manager but everytime i start it up it says "You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su/" or "system/xbin/su"
I have the file on the root of the sdcard and im pretty sure i rooted it with revolutionary and installed CWM as well.
Ok... Dumb question... where do we find the fastboot and adb zips to install on the C drive??
I have gotten thru step 8 and failed whentrying to install CWM. I manually installed it with step 9 and it said finished. Step 10 says to select recovery but it is not listed. I rebooted to see if that would work but it didnt. Where did I go wrong?
EDIT: Actually it did work just was trying to hard. Thanks for the great instructions.
@ Darkpsycho0
try installing busybox from the market and give it a try again.
@PacerguyDon
The links are in the OP.
It's next to the one that has the img file as well. There is only one zip file and it contains both items in it.
@Flightmed
Power down, and get back into HBoot. You will see the following options:
Fastboot
Recovery
Factory Reset
Simlock
Hboot Usb
Image CRC
The second option (Recovery) is what you want.
EDIT: Glad you got it working!!!

It happens...we get so excited that we tend to overlook the obvious. Kind of like my wife...I love her to death and I love to make love to her but I overlooked the obvious that she is also crazy. Oh well...

Busybox said "Root not found! The su binary was not found on your phone." -_____-
Thinking about it and looking back...I didn't complete the instructions on applying root. I apologize to you and everyone else.
When you have CWM installed, open it up through recovery. Next, as long as you copied the signed zip file to the root of your sdcard, select "Install Zip From SDCard" (5th Option).
Select "Choose Zip from SDCard" (2nd Option)
Select the zip file (su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip)
Choose Yes and wait. Once done, reboot and you should be good!
Again, I apologize. I will update main post asap!

That worked.. no more error thanks. I was about to throw my phone across the room especially since while i was waiting for replies I was trying to just install new themes but can't get Astros to work with the apk files correctly. -_- (still can't)
I'm already rooted via 2.2 but this is a great guide for the truly n00b.
Should be seeing lots of new members posting in the development section soon ;!)
