Does anyone know how to go about modifying the recovery partition? I've been unable to even extract the files. I can't mount /dev/block/mtdblock2 (in recovery or out of it), and I can't mount a loop back device off any of the recovery.img's..
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
*bump* Someone out there knows an answer to this. I can feel it ;-)
I've figured it out more or less. For those of you who stumbled onto this post by searching and are wondering the answer, it appears boot.img and recovery.img are raw images containing a concatenated kernel and ramdisk. The good news is there's a perl script that can extract them, found here under alternative method.

Thank you! I've been searching for 2 days on how to access mtdblocks0-3!
I've searched for this the best I could but it always comes up with "HOW TO flash a zip file"
I want to know how you CREATE flashable zip files?
Please if someone could help me out.
I find it a lot easier and quicker than doing adb because I'm such a fail at adb commands.
Thanks in advance.
Ok so i'm guessing NO ONE in this whole forum knows how to create flashable files?

I found these 2 links informative, even though the second one is incomplete.
You dont need to sign the updates, just turn off verification in recovery

My god all that looks complicated.
Isn't there a simpler way, like a program that will just do it for you?
There is an adb GUI out there somewhere. Never used it so I can't comment on it really. But I hear some people swear by It.
Android Commander. Boot phone into recovery and it's a great GUI. View, delete, push and pull files. Various other options. Quicker than a .zip or a typing commands.

Thanks for this, it's great.
I would still like to know how to make flashable zip files because then i can share my modded apps and widgets.
It doesn't work.
Because I'm using the HTC Desire the files don't stay when I push a modded app.
oxygen has second boot screen until "update-oxygen-1.0.1-signed",so i want to push bootanimation.zip into oxygen rom,i did like this..i built a file under data\local ,then i put the "bootanimation.zip" into the file ,then signed it,but i have always failed,i need somebody's help.......
i am a rookie and i does not know many english words, please forgive me,
What I always do is to open up the .rar (not unzipping it, but really just double click it), and poke around until I find the folder where the bootanimation.zip is.
Then I delete that .zip, and then using WinRar, click "Add" on the top left, and selected your desired bootanimation.zip, all of this WHILE still in the same folder where the original bootanimation was in.
When done, just sign it, then flash it as you would a normal Rom.

thank you for replying my post~
i have another question ,that is , i did not find "bootanimation.zip " in the oxygen rom ,maybe i did not find it in the right place, but oxygen rom did not have a folder called data/local...
Right, Oxygen seems to be a new breed of ROMs (hence, the no data/local), which I honestly haven't have the luxury of time to try yet (damn, lol).
Anyway, if you searched the oxygen thread, this post would have come up.
Try it and see
It's in /system/media
If you are S-OFF you can just adb push C:\asd\asd\asd.zip /system/media/bootanimation.zip while the phone is running.
Otherwise you need to do it in recovery.
But wm's method is really the easiest way if you want to change your bootanimation before you have flashed an update.
While I'm at it: could you guide me to a thread/site where I can find infos regarding signing zip files? I only found really old threads :S
Thank you.

I cannot remember the creator of the program, but I used this thing called autosign.bat, which I got off the xda forum.
I'm sure you can find it around somewhere in the forum.

actually,i did it in this way, first, you need have the program called java, after you download it ,you have to set a java's environment which you can search it by yourself, attention: if you do not know much java languages ,advice you to install it in the default location. second, you need a Auto-sign tool which you can also find it by searching in xda. Then you should unzip the Auto-sign.rar under anywhere you can find it .
After you have done all of these, you can make your own rom !(all of the work below is in the unzipped folder called Auto-sign)
put the rom you have reformed into the folder called "Auto-sign",then ,you need to rename the rom to "update",after that ,double click it the Sign.bat in the folder, wait for awhile, you will get another rom called "update_signed",it is the rom you can flash into your Desire. English is not my mother tongue, if you can not understand what i have said, please reply me with simple and exact words, then, we can communicate with eachother.
ok here is my question..
im trying to extract the system.img files to restore some of the original files i changed.
here is the things i want to know in a list
1, Which tool is used to extract those IMG files? guide please. if you do need to compile it please post guide on how to compile as well?
2, how to repack the files into readable Img files which we can use to fastboot flash system with?
3, the shutdown.zip and downanimation.zip what are the requirements? i have sucessfully made a custom bootanimation.zip but failed the downanimation and shutdown. the bootanimation works when i made zip file with store only attributes "no compression", but the other 2 wont work either way..
if i can get this information i would make a general thread about DHD with all the information so it would be easier for anyone to find out all about xda and the development for DHD
example, Radio/Eng S-Off CID-1111111 simunlock, adb commands/tools/guide, cygwin/unyaffs GIMP etc including graphical mods and specific how to's.
please help me out this might reward the newbies alot saving loads of precious time searching.. just like me
rofl edited to change adb to fastboot. sry my bad. stupid typo ;x
Hello all. thought i would ask a very quick question but before that let me explain
i was tinkering with the nbimg tool since i wanted to make a customer splash screen for my phone. all works pretty well.
no what i would like to know is that when i change the .nb file that is created to a .img my comuter shows it as a zip file (gives me the zip folder icon)
is that normal?
if so awesome if not what can i do to fix that?
thank you, i hope i have not wasted anyones time.
