[Q] Wifi Only Rom - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any roms that only use wifi? I would like to keep my phone for games and such after I upgrade.

Just use airplane mode, but with wifi on. That's what I do, as I don't want to pay $100 a month for data.

when you set up any rom there is an option to turn off mobile network and use wifi only... thats probably the best thing to do. If you dont want to do a reset there is an option in setting to turn off mobile networks

[Q] Auto switch between 3G to wifi mode

This is a feature I was trying to use with WM6 in the past but it wouldn't work. My question has to do with Android in general and with either Desire or Desire HD.
Let's say that I use a 3G data contract and sometimes I have wifi available as well (but not always in reach). I want to save my 3G data because I pay per kb and prefer to use wifi when available. Is it possible for Android to automatically connect to WiFi when it is in reach and when I move out of its reach, to revert to 3G?
If not, what is the way to handle this? for example, do I manually enable/disable one of the 2 and try which works?
I just turn both data and WiFi on and leave them on. That way as soon as I am in a WiFi zone like at home, it will automatically connect to WiFi.

So, to make this even more clear: you have them both turned on (3G and WiFi) and WiFi will take priority? and revert to 3G only when WiFi is unavailble?
and we are talking about which model? or maybe it'a all Andreoid the same?
I think its the same with all Android phones. If both 3g and WiFi are on WiFi will take priority. I am at work and have both turned on...as soon as I go home, the phone will connect via WiFi automatically.
By the way I have a desire too.

Thanks a lot. That means that desire will do for me. I don't know if that has been resolved with WM though, maybe it will be with WP7 but I think that Android will e a better option for now.
Hi, you can also save battery/money with softwares that automaticly close 3g/wifi for night. I use "data on demand" and "settings profile lite" to close both for night and also close wifi when my location is not home.

nice. are most of those software free for Android or you have to buy them? similar to WM?
Hi, both are free, just install through Android Market.

Wifi only & Disable GSM?

Guys I am going away with work for four months somewhere which will cost me fortune to use my phone. That said I want to take it with me use it as a tablet of sorts as I have access to wifi.
I know I can turn off mobile data, but can I disable the GSM modem too. Basically I want airplane mode but with wifi enabled. That way there is no chance of any costs been incurred.
Thanks
Don't know if it works for you, but I just tested like this:
- Go to Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile networks/Network operators
- Just select an operator different from the sim card you have
Wifi should still work.
I use a free app from market called airplane settings that allows you to select which radios to keep active when turning on airplane mode. It works with latest Runny v4 so should work for you.

Turn on Airplane mode, then turn on WiFi. Wifi should be turned on and gsm is still off
I do what i want, because I can.

Never thought to try that as figured airplane mode would have killed the wifi entirely. It seems to work so thanks!
What about just removing the SIM Card?

Would perfer to keep it in, there is the availability to use my phone where I am going, just is very expensive, if need be I can then just turn it back on and make a quick call/send a text. Just dont want it standby all the time with the ability to cost me a fortune to recieve calls!

I must than be doing something wrong here. The moment I go into Airplane mode, my WiFi gets turned off and won't turn on untill I disable airplane mode. So what's the catch here.

What you want is very easy just go to setting> wireless. And then take the mark away by data connection.
And if you want airplane mode with wifi enabled that's easy to: First put airplane mode on and after that switch wifi back on.
Yep, switch to Airplane-Mode and turn on Wifi.
I did that some weeks ago when I went to Israel and gonna do it again when i'll be in England this weekend.

Remember to turn off your voicemail (you may have to talk to your provider), or youll be paying international rates for any calls you miss.

Yes indeed or else you will be charged if people speak into your voicemail. Well I already disabled it for a long time, I don't see the use off voicemail, people can better send an e-mail or text message.

Are you guys running stock ROM's or costom ones.
I tested it yesterday several times, but when I go into Airplane mode, I can enable WiFi but it does not connect to known AccessPoints.
Also does not give me a list of found AccessPoints.
[edit]
Just because I wouldn't instantly disbelieve you guyes I tried it one more time, and a miracle happend.
It connected to the WiFi access point on Airplane mode.
So what you were saying is the correct way
Had forgotten about the voicemail part, thankfully I can phone it myself before i leave and disable it from the options menu so thats easy enough. Will just place a new message on it from me saying I am away and to contact me by email.
Thanks for the help though, I knew you guys would have a solution to this!
*#*#4636#*#*
1. Put *#*#4636#*#* into the Dialer (or use any application available on the Market like 4636 — takes you to the same service screen)
2. Choose Phone Information
3. Press Turn off radio
Thanks

Turning ON Airplane and Switching ON WiFi works like a charm.
Thanks..
I know its old thread but good for googlers. Airplane mode will not disable internal modem as you can still see its active under battery details straight red bar = weak or searching for signal. Its draining battery and its still able send/receive data. I read about flashing a script to completely turn it off and cut its power but it shows pie security error in terminal -.- I deleted dialer&related stuff from phone as its only used with VoiP so I can't access service menu. Do you still get red line in battery details and does the modem stays off after a reboot? Some devices you can actually physically remove the modem.

Is there a way to turn off all cell radios yet leave wi-fi on?

I have switched from Sprint to Verizon and I now have 2 unused HTC EVOS (both rooted). I would like to do one of two things.
1. Is it possible to flash a rom that turns off all radios except for Wi-Fi and maybe GPS? The cell radios kill my battery, and I'd like to maybe use these as Android iPod touches, for media playback and games. If I do this they will never need cell access, so I'd like to turn that off like Airplane mode, while leaving wi-fi on.
2. The second option would be to flash these phones to a pay as you go service like trac-phone. That way the kids would have a pay as you go phone.
If anyone has information on how to do either of these that would be great, keep in mind that the phone numbers these phones have been moved to Verizon, so if someone has info on option 2, I would need a phone number on the phones, maybe google voice or something.
Thanks for any info!

You can always enable Airplane mode and then enable WiFi. I do that all the time (with my old Hero) I know that it also work with my Evo (on MikG). You have to do it in the right order. Enabling Airplane mode will disable WiFi. You then have to enable WiFi while Airplane mode is on. I am not sure if there is a ROM that will allow you to permanently set the phone this way. It is also possible that rebooting the phone may require you to manually re-enable WiFi when it comes back up in Airplane mode.
There is no Rom that is so minimalistic that it has no radios etc or that has the radios off when you flash. Basically any Rom you have, you are going to have to do this, read below:
Hello Brian "ThePCTech" the answer to your first question about being able to turn off your mobile carriers service. The answer is yes. Go to your settings and go to WiFi, scroll down and you should have two options to turn off mobile network, un-check both of them. Go back to your settings and find your GPS and un-check it. Go back to settings to WiFi and turn it on. Now, you only have WiFi enabled and everything else on your phone is off.
If I answered any of your questions and you feel that I deserve a +1 on my THANKS button, click it
You can turn off or un check "Mobile Network".

Does this turn off all cell radios? Data and voice?
Brian
just go airplane mode. lots of newer roms have the ability to disable the network icon showing in the status bar as well.

[Q] WiFi // Observatory

Sorry if this is a basic question. I have looked around but not got a direct answer.
With WiFi and mobile data both switched on, the Note will (I guess) always use the WiFi first.
If the WiFi is on the edge of coverage, will it switch back and forward between the two or stick to Mobile Data? Is there anything I can do to adjust this operation?
If the WiFi is off during sleep and I unlock and immediately check email, will Mobile Data be used right away or will it wait until after checking for a WiFi signal?

Issues with Mobile Data

I have an Unlocked HTC 10 that I bought directly from HTC. Sometime, when I try to send a text and I'm on Wifi, whether I have a connection to my mobile data or not, the attempt is an automatic failure, even if I try to resend. If I turn off wifi, it won't enable my data connection, even if I turn it off then back on. It forces me to toggle airplane mode on then off If I want to send a text or browse the web. Also, to make things worse, the issue is completely random. I have no idea that it has happened until I try to send a text. TBH, I'm not even sure if wifi is part of the problem, like maybe it is disconnecting from Mobile Data regardless. If it matters, my carrier is T-Mobile.
Keep in mind, I have wifi calling disabled because it was more trouble than it was worth. But for some reason, the phone won't switch to data without my intervention. If I go out of range of the wifi, it will switch, but not all of the time.
Like right now, under my connection settings, Mobile Data says "Disconnected" even though it is turned on. When I just toggled Airplane Mode like I stated above, the connection was established immediately.
Why is the phone not connecting to the Mobile Network automatically? It seems like common sense when it comes to smart phones nowadays and is really annoying when I send a text, only to find out 30 minutes later, it didn't even try.
From other threads it seems to be an issue with the most recent update from HTC. Only fix right now is to flash a ROM that isn't running the latest update.
