[Q] VPN connection only on specific WiFi - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been reading and searching but I can't find anyway to do what I want so here goes.
I've three kind of connections working on my Desire, a Work WiFi that uses an VPN Tunnel to connect to the Lan, a Home WiFi and a Data Plan for Outside (HDSPA). Now the problem is that I only want the device to connect to the VPN in the Work WiFi but I can't seem to find any solution that let's me configure a VPN only active on an specific WiFi.
So, any ideas ?

VPN will can only be manually turned on or off. The standard phone will not automatically setup VPN connections based on the access point's SSID.
P.S: I am assuming you are not using any custom ROMs.

I'm on CM7 so yes on the custom rom part.
I understand from what you're saying that once I create the vpn I've to connect manually to it?

there are a few apps in the market wich allow you to switch the vpns on with a widget
maybe this is a little bit more comfortable
ps.: 5 VPN is one of these

Yes, you have to switch manually. As crendot pointed out, there are apps out there to let you switch by using on-screen widgets, but at the end of the day it has to be YOU who push the button

[Q] Problem with VPN connection

Hello everyone, I'm asking this because I can't really find anything related trough the forums. I'm using a wireless router to share my university connection, and it requires a VPN username and password for autentication. I configured the VPN on my Galaxy W, and it works fine for the first 2 minutes, and then stops receiving data, and I have to manually disconnect from the vpn, turn off wi-fi and then make the exactly opposite for it to start working again. I don't know what is wrong, because I have configured my flatmate's android devices exactly the same way and they can connect to the same wireless network for as long as they want.
I have tried CM9 and CM10 to see if it would make any difference, but the same thing happens.
If anyone using a VPN to connect to the internet could give me some advice I would really appreciate it.
Cheers.

Tethering help needed - Bluetooth access for all Apps or enable Ad Hoc Wifi

I am looking for help to resolve basically the only issue I have not been able to figure out through these great forums or otherwise.
It seems that getting the tablet to work with an AdHoc network is not yet possible. I have seen comments stating that it may be possible through CyanogenMod. Can anybody confirm this? Or has another way been discovered to allow us to connect to AdHoc wifi networks?
Otherwise, does anybody know how to get ALL apps to recognize the Bluetooth internet connection? I have a Verizon phone running FoxFi and I am thethering via PdaNet Tablet when using Bluetooth; using FoxFi and stock wifi connection for wifi. Some apps will recognize the internet connection while others will not. Is there some way to point all apps to the Bluetooth internet connection?
Thank you in advance for your input.

you need to recompile the kernel to add ibss to the wifi driver and recompile wpa_supplicant to recognize ad-hoc.
If you don't want to do this, most versions of aokp/cm will have it working.
if you are using foxfi, you shouldn't need to worry about ad-hoc

I may be falsely assuming that it is an ad-hoc issue just due to what I have read from others commenting on the issue (re: your comment about FoxFi).
I am going to start by trying one of the more recent CM nightly releases (cm-10.2-20131105-NIGHTLY-flo) and do a little research to see what is involved in recompiling the kernel to add ibss to the wifi driver and recompile wpa_supplicant to recognize ad-hoc and respond back.
Thank you for the input!

Does Pdanet create a connection as a VPN or actual bluetooth tethering? If it's the former, there's the reason. I'm under the impression that apps will be able to properly understand a bluetooth internet connection (via bluetooth PAN I believe)

When I tested FoxFi it acted as a regular Access Point so normal wifi was all that was needed to connect.
Usually it is the WiFi Tether for Root app that sets of the phone as an ad-hoc connection, forcing the tablets connecting to it to also have ad-hoc support.

I truly don't know the answer to this. Can you provide some instructions on testing this theory? I have tried the app Bluetooth Auto Connect and set the connection up with the phone as a PAN connection. I can pair the phone and my n7 together, but the stock Bluetooth manager never shows the two as 'Connected' versus other Bluetooth devices. Any suggestions?

Then I think it must be a limitation with the LG VS660 phone that I'm using.
The good news is that the installation of CyanogenMod worked! What would have been intermittent connectivity every 5 minutes or so has now been turned into a solid wifi connection. Apps that would have rarely worked on the wifi connection are now working with no problems.
However, I am still very interested in figuring out the Bluetooth connectivity option. For those who may not want / like to go the CM route, it would be nice to have a simpler solution. Plus, my wife has a stock 2012 n7 and I would like to be able to get hers connected without rooting it. Any input on how to accomplish this would be great!

Tethering WiFi with VPN

I have Private Internet Access as my VPN and I wanna use it on my phone to allow me to have a Wifi portable hotspot going through the VPN.... Only thing is, at the moment I am reliant on using my computers VPN applications which isnt ideal if the signal and connection to the VPN drops as I get taken offline and I have to turn cellular data on and off again to get it back up and running....
Any solutions? I have tried that tethering app from 2009 and that didnt work at all. Any ideas? Thanks!

Unfortunately the stock Android tethering application does not work with VPNs. This limitation is an oversight in the software and not a system limitation.
However there is an application called ClockworkMod Tether that will allow you to tether and use a VPN at the same time. In fact it makes use of the standard tethering application and then fixes up the routing information to make it work.
This application does not require you to root your phone but you do need to run software on the computer that you wish to connect to your phone. Also this only works for USB tethering at the moment.
There are other alternatives to ClockworkMod Tether, if you wish to try them, including PDANet.
Hope it could help

Sharing VPN connection by wifi tethering

Hello, as the title suggests, has anyone achieved VPN connection tethering thru wifi? I can't seem to make VPN Hotspot(an app by a developer here on XDA) work, but by using PDANET+, it works. Can anyone help me?
Works fine for me.
Here's my setup. I'm subscribed to NordVPN, and use an app called TetherNet VPN. Must be rooted. The key is to go into Developer settings, and turn off "tethering hardware acceleration."
It also depends on the order that you do things:
1) turn on your mobile hotspot, and connect your computer or whichever device you want, I usually let it stay connected for 10 min or so before step 2)
2) Connect to your VPN
3) Open TetherNet VPN and tap "Share VPN on Hotspot."
4) Enjoy fast, unlimited tethering.
When you wish to turn it off. I find it best to turn off the hotspot first, then disconnect from VPN tethering. Data connection gets a little wonky if you disconnect from VPN first. Also helps to reboot the device afterward.
It's a bit of a procedure, but well worth it if you ask me to get around Verizon's BS games.
Not possible for root? With PdaNet+, the client device doesn't see the hotspot.

Many thanks for this. Your app seems to work. The app VPN Hotspot doesn't work for me for some reason.
My device is on Android 5.1.1 and VPN Hotspot requires some newer operating systems.

Problems to create 5ghz hotspot

Hello one more time team
Here I'm reporting another annoying bug with my device
I have tried many time to create or make a 5ghz hotspot work
My external devices can see others 5ghz network but even when i create it with the RM5S, It is not visible.
I have done a network reset on the phone, check and unchecked the "support 6th generation" option in the tethering options and it just does not work
2.4ghz works fine
I have reported the issue via ticket but I guess will not be solved as my previous tickets
Anyone with the same issue?
Attaching evidence

some countries do not allow the use of personal 5g wifi tethering. its possible you live in one of these countries? the feature is blocked on the rom if you are in a country that does not allow it.

Hey Patrick
Thanks again for your answer
I read about that limitation in a oneplus forum but I don't really know how to check that.
Actually, i can add something to my issue
While i am reporting the hotspot issue, i must said i am able to share a "connected" wifi using the 5ghz band WHEN (Sorry for the big letters) in use an app called "vpn hotspot"
I dont want to confuse you
I dont need the vpn hotspot app to create a normal hotspot. But the default settings of RM ROM does not let me create the 5ghz connection.
When i connect to a 5ghz router at home, i can "create" another wifi 5ghz network using "vpn hotspot" app (i usually do this cause i need a vpn network for many devices)
The main problem is with mobile data. When i am not at home, the vpn hotspot app does "IS NOT" allowed to modify the system settings for the hotspot created by the rom, it only replicates the original setup and bypass the VPN traffic
So, going back to the original issue, i am not sure if it is a country restriction. I usually live.in Hungary but i am now in poland and i received the device on this last country.
I would even wonder how to create the hotspot using the wifi 6 standard as it should be supported as well.
Thanks for the feedback

sounds like the VPN software you're using is interfering with the creation of the hotspot.
if the 5g hotspot wifi works as intended using the normal hotspot settings on the phone without the VPN, then it would make sense that its the VPN app thats causing the issue.
I can create and use both 2.4g and 5g wifi hotspots, sharing my Mobile network. it works correctly. i do use DNS 66 to block adverts but thats the only VPN type software i use, and its only for black listing adverts and inbedded video adverts on sites.
so test the hotspot settings with the normal phone settings with the VPN off or uninstalled. - if this works correctly. the problem is with your VPN software. you would need to contact support for that app.
some devices do not work with wifi 6 option enabled. turning it off may increase connectivity issues.

Well. I know there was going to be some confusion.
The hotspot does not work with 5ghz even without vpn.
When i use my home wifi, I connect from my phone (no mobile data) to my vpn provider and then with another app, "vpn hotspot" (root required) i can share the vpn traffic to external devices via hotspot. When I do these steps sometimes 5ghz works, and i say sometimes cause I left the "vpn hotspot" wifi setting as default. I might change some network options there but, those options are not available for hotspot within "vpn hotspot" this is why i am blaming the ROM, But maybe you are right and there is some interference between apps. I will try to flush the settings one more time
I have flushed the rules of the vpn hotspot app and tried again. Working fine with and without vpn!
Thanks
I see.
You are trying to filter your wifi connection at home through your phones wifi and share thst connection to other wifi devices.
I dont believe it will work correctly. you're essentially trying to create a wifi repeater.
You're making your wifi chip do 2 things, and its unable to run two streams at the same time.
It state in the Hotspot settings
" Use hotspot to provide internet to other devices through your mobile data"
If you want to connect to your home wifi with your phone, and share thst connection with another device you must use USB tethering.
You risk causing damage to your wifi chip trying to force two connections on it.
using repeater apps, does cause the signal strength to degrade, (bacause you're using the same antenna to receive your home wifi and to create its own wifi. limiting the bandwith and can cause connection issues over time.
the wifi chips in android phone can create a repeating wifi signal, but they're not made to do it. normally as stock android runs when you enable wifi hotspot, it stops the current wifi connecting to create a new wifi access point. using apps to get around that may cause issues and even damage as i stated above. if your wifi chip breaks due to improper use, it will need a warranty return.
