[Q] Install MMS.apk - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All of a sudden I kept getting force closes when trying to open up MMS app. I uninstalled the app using Titanium Backup. I am now trying to install the app again using Astro File Manager and also tried using Appinstaller. I copied the MMS.apk from the original Bonsai 4.0 zip file on my computer to my SD card.
When trying to install .apk with Astro I keep getting application not installed error.
Can someone give me a good MMS.apk I can install and also let me know if I need to install the .apk a different way.
I am running Bonsai 4.0

Do I have to use "root explorer" I used astro explorer and placed the .apk into the system/app and nothing changed. I rebooted the phone and still nothing.
Any other suggestions would greatly help.. I need my text back.

Remember to use the original name of the app
For example if the name if the app is a.apk and you rename it to b.apk it won't work

I did the same thing. Try restoring a backup of only ur mms.apk from titanium. It worked form me to stop the fc's and get my stock mms back. But I still couldn't get a the modded mms to install :-\

Have you tried just flashing one of the mms apks from the transparent collection on this forum? Not sure if you WANT transparent, but I had a similar problem to yours, and I just went with the transparent ones and it worked for me. And I got some pretty colors to boot.

Anytime someone says to use root explorer, i use Super Manager. Its free, has root functions and can mount /system r/w.

What are you trying to do?
Using root explorer you can copy the apk to the system folder if necessary.

With a system level file manager like Root Explorer or ES Explorer with root explore enabled, copy the camera's apk to the system/app folder and then enable the permissions and reboot or hot restart your device. That *should* work for you, however, if you are trying to install it on an AOSP rom, i highly doubt it will work for you.

Please Help

Any got a guide or know how to port keyboards? Please be as detailed as possible. Or if you know how maybe you can do it for me if you'd be so kind I'm trying to port the Motorola Photon keyboard.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Normally you can just use es file manager/root explorer, go into the system/apps, find the keyboard apk, then try to install it. Perhaps get a rom from that device and then extract the apk as well.
I've tried many times it says application not installed

Please post that apk here. And I wi make it work for you. I assume it is LatinIME.apk, right?

here it is:

if you get it to work can you please tell me how you did it
Thanks
here try this
What I did was sign it. Should be able to install correctly now
Whether it works or not after its installed is another story...I did not test.
Is the photon leyboard much different than the gb keyboard? I'm curious.
Btw. after you download file, don't mess with it in anyway. That will break the signture.
Thanks ill try it and post results in a bit

Root explorer to put unsigned apk in system/app and I also signed it and tried all the above and no go
On adb it says something like user shared not compatible
And tried your signed apk and nope

If you have existing copy of LatinIME.apk in system/app, you need to delete it first. The signatures are different with the unsigned and signed version i posted. Please remove the apk in system/app, then try installing via adb again.

Long pressing in a text area didn't allow you to select it? Also go into settings > language and keyboards. and look for it there, as you might have to 'enable' it.
It force closes

System/app

So I am trying to copy past browser from frozen rom to urban metamorpisis how ever my computer won't let me does anone have any ideas on how to do this
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
If you have root you could copy it to your SD card with Root Explorer from the Market. Titanium Backup would let you back it up and restore the backup on another ROM.
Needs to be pushed to system\app with root explorer. Then reboot.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I tried that won't let me push it there for some odd reason
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Did you hit the mount r/w button in the upper left hand corner of root explorer?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yes I did I get to the app folder in system/app and then I clicked paste then I look to the folder and it didn't get placed
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Try deleting or renaming the old file first then copy and paste the new one. Are you using Root Explorer?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yes I am using root explorer I got it placed in current running rom in system/app and then re boot and look in app section and browser still not there try installing apk direct says app not installed
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
So you paste it,check it, its there, reboot and its gone?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
No I reboot check its there but the actually app is not there

Use search. There are couple ones in this section.

I did search and found several. But none work on my phone. I'm assuming its because I'm not rooted. Thanks for posting that link but it says there's a problem parsing package.

Hi,
Yes you need root, system applications don't install like other applications, they must be "push" directly in system/app folder and have the correct permissions...
Sweet. Didn't know we could install this! Can I just use root explorer to drag it there and install from system/app? Then do I remove the original messaging apk or does it just update over it? Thank you

Hi,
Yes you can use Root Explorer and yes just drag and drop in system/app and don't forget to set the correct permissions like the others apps in system/app...
For security rename your old Mms.apk (like Mms.apk.old or .bak) and keep it or move it in your sdcard,if something is wrong with your new app,delete-it and rename correctly your previous app.
Eventually reboot after and you're good...
Thanks it's beautiful. Now I rebooted but couldn't find any way to fix permissions. Do you mean in clockwork recovery? I'm using es file explorer. Thanks for your help
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Re,
Yes you can set the permissions in recovery in advanced settings if I remember right.
I don't use ES File Explorer but Root Explorer but I think in ES you can change the permissions,no?Like Root Explorer:long press on the app?
At worst you do it in recovery...
EDIT:I just watched ES File Explorer on the Play Store and yes you can change the permissions (it's in the description) so it's like you want...Try in recovery it may avoid errors.
Thanks.... Really didn't wanna root this one

I've had a lot of people ask for this.

i tried putting it in system/app and editing the permissions. rebooted and still not there. i'm using "Bean's Custom Stock Rom"
EDIT: so i removed mms.apk and rebooted. the stock messaging app is now displaying, but it force closes every time i open it
I renamed the message app in the rom to mms.apk.bak. Then renamed the stock app to mms.apk. Changed the permissions to rw-rw-r. Fix permission then restart and it should show up.
