[Q] 4G WiMAX not working - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My 4G isn't working on any ROMs that have reported 4G as "working".
I haven't gone back to stock yet, which is my next step.
Has anyone else had this issue? How did you fix it (if you did) ?
But is there a danger with the Epic, like there is with the Evo of destroying your RSA keys?
Thanks!

No, Epic don't have RSA keys. Maybe 4G is down in your area. Sprint is working on 4G nationwide. Call and ask.
Do you BONSAI?

It's not. A few of my co-workers have Evo's, and their 4G works. Harrisburg, PA BTW.
I should have been more specific....when I enable the 4G radio, it says "On..." and then goes to disabled after about 15 - 20 seconds. The radio won't turn on.

Have you tried turning it on in settings instead of the top bar? You may have to Odin back to stock and see if it works there. If not then it is the perfect time to hit the Sprint store. Odin should work, one of your Wimax files might have gotten corrupted in an earlier flash. Everything you need is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813

I returned to stock EC05...no dice.
Even if I go into settings, to enable 4G it says:
Turning on...
But then it doesn't enable.
4G might be messed up. Could be time to hit the sprint store.
I wonder if something got shorted? I've noticed over the past few days that when I plugin / detach a USB cable in / charging cable that the phone will just up and reboot it self. Maybe something got fried?
When I go under settings to phone status, it tells me that the 4G MAC address is "unavailable". Is that normal?

You will only get an address when you connect to 4G. Sounds like the 4G radio died.

Try the EE03 modem. The 4G functionalities are reportedly improved.

I tried ee03 modem with the official Frito release and with the ee03 leak. Nothing. I'm going to try to hit up the sprint store tomorrow after I put stock rom and bootloader back on it

OK, I'm getting a similar problem. The WiMAX Radio turns on, but it never connects. I know for a fact that I get reception in my house, and I've tried in a Sprint Store when I was testing the Photon 4G. Still can't connect; more specifically it disconnects after attempting to obtain an IP address.
I have already tried messing the WiMAX Extension settings in ##3282#
I'm running SyndicateROM Frozen 1.2 | Genocide 2.0 Kernal | EG22 Modem.
Suggestions?

What would you do?

I bought an Evo back 2 weeks ago and went through the whole 4g fiasco, but I was unable to fix it. The furthest I got was my 4g would try to obtain an ip address but never get it.
So I got a replacement Evo today and right out of the box (Software .6) the 4g was not working. It would scan-connecting-authorizing - - - Then nothing it would just go back to scan -connecting - auth --- scan and so on.
So I did the full root +nand unlock
Then did Whitlock method, then flashed DC newest ROM.
Wimax is still repeating the same things for me.
MY username/pass are good.
My DEV MAC is a little different though.
It matches both on the software and behind the battery. DEV MAC - 38:E78:**:**:**
I have done profile update numerous times, I have applied the permission fix, I have renamed the Tree file, I have factory reset my phone.
Nothing I do will allow me to connect successfully to 4g.
My wife has her 4g. I rooted/nand then did whitlock, then flashed over to the newest DC ROM and her phone connects to 4g just fine.
Any Idea's?
I called Sprint and they sent me to the highest tech and she said she doesn't know what to do for me, figures...
sounds like it might be an account problem on their end, unless you and your wife are on the same plan. unless you are, and then try her credentails.

Yes me and my wife are on the same family plan.
And Sprint said everything looked fine on their end
when you get a chance, check the value of "Current username" in
Settings->About Phone->Phone Identity
on both phones. see if they match, if not, bother the hell out of sprint. unless youg et it fixed first
Wait the identity should or should not match?
Mine is different than my wifes.
Anybody got an answer to this question?

To answer your question (the post title) -- "be pissed off."
Your situation is really strange and it sounds like you've tried a lot of the "fixes" here for 4G.
What area are you in?
Have you tried Settings->Update->Update Profile (and PRL) ?

Yea man, I am in Dallas/Ft. Worth
My wifes phone has great 4g service just blocks form our house.
I got her phone, and root/nand unlocked it, then used whiteslack method, then flashed DC 3.2.3
Working like a charm.
Anyways I did the same for my replacement Evo. (Came with .6 software out of box) OUT OF BOX 4g was not working!
So I said to hell with it I will fix it on my own with help here from XDA.
So to no avail I still have not been able to fix it.
After talking to Sprint in person they told me to hang onto my phone becuase they are coming out with a patch that will fix my 4g because now it is a known problem. So I am hoping when the patch comes out it will not break my root/nand. But damn its pissing me off.

[Q] 4G turning on and off, slowing down phone

So I wanted to try out different kernels yesterday. I'm rooted using the Stock ROM.
My phone was already running netanarchy's 4.1.9.1 with no problems, but I wanted to try out King's kernel BFS #8 as well as #6. I did a cache and dalvik wipe prior to each flash. In the end, I deemed that I personally like netanarchy's kernels more, so I switched back to 4.1.9.1.
However, now my 4G keeps turning on and off. This is causing my phone to significantly lag in intervals correlating with the on and off of the 4G toggle. Is it possible that flashing different kernels somehow borked my wimax radio?
Any help is much appreciated.
Is it anything like I described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8052344
I'm having this issue and I never even rooted my phone. Note my latest reply that I did a hard reset on one of the evo's and now the 4g radio hangs on "turning on..." when I try to turn it on. Still seeing that now. Considering doing the unrevoked 3.2 to root it and try to fix it since sprint is clueless on the issue.
Yea, it is similar to your issue. I found your thread after I posted mine. I tried updating to the latest Wimax update found on XDA and that helped somewhat.
My 4G stays on, scans, and says connecting to Sprint network. However, it never successfully connects. I now believe I have the dreaded MAC address problem and am now trying to fix it.
I can't even see my 4G MAC address because I can't get the 4G radio to turn on. How else can I check whether my keys are screwed up (without being rooted)?
try dialing ##3282# and select view mode. Go to WiMax and look under NIA. That should have the MAC address.
If it does not match what is listed on your box, then your MAC addresses do not match.

You gotta be rooted to do that. As for your keys getting hammered, the key issue arises on rooted phones after a bad flash, or corrupted radio file. More than likely your keys are fine. Let me ask you this, have you previously have 4G working, and it just stopped working? Or you now just tried to use it, and it's not working?

Yes, it used to work. I picked up signal around the boston area a month or two ago (before boston officially had 4g). I can't remember whether I used 4g successfully after the 2.2 upgrade. I was part of the group that did the .3 leaked 2.2 update and then took the .3 to .6 update OTA. I have never rooted this phone.

There is no WiMax option when I do this. I think the WiMax radio needs to be switched on to see this. But I can't get the radio to turn on.
I've been using alogcat to try to debug the issue. I see this error come up about 90 seconds after trying to enable 4G (this is the same time the "turning on..." changes to "Unable to start 4g"):
E/WimaxStateTracker( 104): Failed to load Wimax driver -=>wl.release
I haven't been able to find any information about what this might mean.
same problem here; ever since running unrevoked 3 the other day, my evo 4g keeps turning 4G on and off by itself, and, wont let me stop it from doing that..
its killing my battery with its constant searching, and I cant find any sort of "tweak" that will allow me to just shut it off or leave it on; the widgets dont do it, so I cant figure out how to stop it..
was working fine before this..
On stock 2.2 froyo, stock kernel...
any ideas?
thanks!

Ok you may have hammered your 4G then. I've heard of a couple of people who took the leaked update, and fouled up their 4G. I would suggest you backup your stuff then run the latest RUU to see if that clears things up with the wimax driver not loading. If not take the phone to Sprint.

i read the thread you started about this issue. you mentioned you were having trouble breaking the on/off loop but then mentioned your wife somehow was able to do it. while in the on/off loop, did you find that the the radio was actually spending any time "scanning" after it turned on? on one of my evos, the phone would switch from on to off and back to on so quickly, the button was always grayed out in the wireless menu so i could never interrupt it. on my other evo, it would spend a little time scanning ( a second or 2), which was enough time to press the button so the 4g would turn off for good and break the on/off loop. a hard reset fixed the phone with the unbreakable loop (4g now works). a hard reset caused the other phone to change so that 4g just hangs at "turning on..." when i try to toggle it on.

By running the latest RUU, do you mean perform the latest OTA sprint update (the .6) by putting in on my SD card and doing the volume down/power button trick? Is this safe if I already have the update applied? I was considering doing this but wasn't sure if it would be safe to do.

Issues connecting to 4g

So idk what exactly is going on but last night I tried turning on my 4g and when it actually turned on it immediately turned back off...then I tried rebooting the phone and seeing if that helped but the same thing...then I tried doing a little research and I come to find that people have been losing their RSA keys and breaking their 4g...so I ran android ask and checked my wimax via adb and everything seemed as though it was there landing the right place (no errors) but I still have no 4g...now if I'm not mistaken I upgraded a few radios, including baseband and wimax, and I heard there have been connection issues with flashing those as well, but not "broken" 4g...so I'm just looking for a little direction I guess...I'm running Myn's warm rls4 rom and using netarchy 4.1.9.1 kernel (if the even matters) and when I go to check my 4g MAC address it says unavailable...can anyone point me in the right direction...I don't use 4g a lot cus I'm just outside of a 4g area but still, its the EVO "4G" and I would like to make sure it stays that way...if you know what I mean ;-)...any help is appreciated

To check your 4G MAC address, you need to first have your 4G radio on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9663192#post9663192
Read that to check your RSA keys and troubleshoot whether or not you have hosed your keys. If you lost your RSA keys, then there is no way ATM to get it back short of returning your phone for a replacement.
Did you update your profile after flashing the new radios?

yea i always update my PRL and my Profile after flashing new radios but still same thing...i only just now found out there was a problem tho cus i don't use it too often and when i went to use it, it wouldn't stay on and scan for a signal.
sorry btw for the late reply
EDIT: would going back to a different WiMax radio version help? i would try it without asking but i'm afraid to ACTUALLY lose my RSA keys so yea.
I'm having the same exact issue...any updates?
I'm in the same boat. I had to take my day 1 EVO (hardware 0002) to a Sprint store on Christmas Eve as I dropped it flat on its face and shattered the screen last week. Although I figured it wouldn't be an issue, rather than risk a small chance that they wouldn't repair under the TEP and $500, I went ahead and unrooted and returned to S-ON and loaded the new stock RUU.
So that moved me from HBOOT .97 to the new 2.10 - I then used the handy root guide for 2.10 and was able to re-root and S-Off without any problem, but my 4G would not connect (it comes on, shows scanning, but won't connect). It did connect a couple of times, but then dropped and have not been able to reconnect at all. Wife has an Epic so know a strong 4G signal is working at home.
I've tried the tree.xml trick and also checked to make sure I still have RSA keys which I do (even backed them up after checking again today). I've reflashed the latest radios, updated profile and PRL numerous times. Nothing working. 4G worked perfectly before I unrooted, and after I unrooted (with stock RUU). It was only after re-rooting with the 2.10 thread that this happened. I have not flashed any recovery other than the modified Amon-Ra since the Hboot update.
Wondering if anyone has unrooted, then re-rooted and been able to reconnect to 4G. I may give it a try - just didn't want to go through the trouble again if it doesn't work.
Just an update if anyone else is having trouble with 4G. I had previously used Myn's rom and stock, but since Myn's wasn't updated for the new radios yet I just flashed the sprint lovers Rom in zikronix's 2.10 thread, then tried out Azreal 3.0 (which I really like) - it was in both those ROMs that 4G would not work for me.
I just flashed back to deodexed stock rooted zip of 3.70.651.1 and 4G works again!

I know it sounds like a **** of a question but do you live in a 4 g area
Sent from my Wimax infested cm6 SuperSonic
The most common cause of this is something corrupt in your data profile. this is fixed by updating running a data profile update.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
as the above poster says try updating your profile. if that doesnt work try wiping all data/factory restore and reflashing the rom and trying again. Also make sure you have the radios for your rom. Ie if on a 3.7 rom you should have the latest radios if on an earlier rom you may want to try the previous radios.
what method did you use to verify you still have RSA keys?
i recently i a prob w/ 4g after switching roms. i updated the profile like 4 times, went to a non 4g area, turned on 4g, let it settle, turned it off. later that day i went back to the 4g area, turned it on, and BAM! worked great. My exact problem w/ 4g was it went from scanning, to connecting w/ sprint, the authorizing (for s spilt second), and back to scanning and so forth, over and over. hope this helps....

[Q] Freshly rooted phone radio is not taking a flash

Ok this might be a bit lengthy.
Yesterday I got a replacement EVO because my last one stopped taking a charge (luckily I was able to lock it and flash back to stock).
It's been almost a year since I last rooted an EVO, and I thought I remembered all the steps. So this morning I rooted it (unrevoked). Cleared all the cache's, and then flashed Calkulin's EViO 3 v1 Beta 2.
Well once it booted up all I got was 1x, not 3g. I then tried to flash EVO_Radio_2.15.00.04.08_WiMAX_27925_PRI_NV_1.90.00 3. And then reflashed EViO 3 again.
Again I only have 1x. After this I realized I ****ed up big time. I didnt grab any numbers from the radio screen or make a 4g key backup OR make a nand backup.
The phone is saying the following:
baseband_ver: 2.15.00.11.19
PRI_ver: 1.90_003
PRL_ver: 01115
Hardware information is "unavailable" for 4G MAC Address, Wifi MAC Address, and Bluetooth Address.
So how badly did I **** up? Is this something that
It'll show up as unavailable unless you're actually connected, then it'll show.
Also, if you're on AOSP, it'll show 1x because it shows true data strength unlike sense.
Did you run the 3G fix on a sense rom?

Thanks for the reply. Well whats weird is that im doing this at my desk, and on my old phone it always said 3g. And I had Calkulin's EViO 3 running on that as well.
Is there a way to test my connection to verify it's 3g?
And is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974180&highlight=3g+sense the 3g fix you were referencing? (and no i have not applied this)
