I am trying to flash my rom to this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054574&page=10
However, when I go into the bootloader and then into recovery I get a phone with a red triangle and a !. I'm a little confused what to do to get to my sdcard and push the new rom.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
are you rooted? need to be rooted to flash rom,
if you are, when you get that screen
you pres hold vol Up and press power
Nope, I am not rooted.
Would you recommend these steps for rooting a G2

HOW TO ROOT and S-OFF
- For rooting questions, please refer to the proper thread (rooting methods).
- Rooting an HTC Vision is a pain in the arse because there are many variants/versions, and not all rooting methods can be used on all of them.
- There are many ways to get root access: "rage" (ADB command line type) "visionary" (an APK installable app by paulobrien from Modaco) and "gfree". Using "Rage" is safer, "visionary" is simpler but many problemshave been reported, so "gfree" is the betterway to go.
- After using any of these, you can go further and turn S-OFF, CID-unlock and SIM-unlock the phone with "gfree", a safe and neat script written by scotty2 et al @ #G2root IRC. Sounds confusing ?? Just follow the instructions on the Wiki.
- TO ROOT, FOLLOW THE STEPS IN THE WIKI
VISION WIKI: ROOTING
- To check if your phone can be rooted you can check this neat thread:
[GUIDE] Root AND Downgrade ANY Desire Z or G2
Thanks to Aegishua
- Before "gfree" was available, transitory ("fake") S-OFF was achieved by flashing an engineering hBoot, but it is not safe and not recommended for newbies.
- As for reference, qpop made a neat a simple guide to get root S-OFF and CID unlock with visionary and gfree. It works a treat with Bell-NAM phones, but visionary sometimes doesn't work for some Asia/Voda versions.
The thread is located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857390, download the "UberRoot" package from the post footer, and follow qpop's guide.
(thanks scotty2 for your hard work and qpop for the guide !!)
- fattire has another neat and clear guide/tutorial for using gfree version 2, the thread is located here: [Guide] Subsidy Unlock, SuperCID, and Radio S-OFF
- More instructions and several methods to root in the WIKI:
WIKI - Rooting the HTC Vision,
and HTC Vision Permanent Root,
- You will need an ADB shell to run gfree and for other stuff. Please read the FAQ if you don't know what this is. If you don't have an ADB shell already set up and running, download the ADB drivers and the Mini ADB from this post's footer or download the full Android SDK (which includes ADB) and the HTC Sync software (to install the USB drivers on your PC).
- The older rooting guide and the older (and not so safe) "hBoot" way to ("fake") S-OFF have been moved to post 3 for reference purposes only. Plese scroll down to post 3 should you want to read the older guides.
no i recommend using the wiki method, with gree .5

Ok, first I want to thank you guys for your help. I am using this guide;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik..._Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29_using_gfree_v0.5
I have two questions. First does "Having the proper USB drivers installed - Windows USB Drivers for the Vision" - does this apply only for the vision or both the vision and the G2
And the second question is for step "2. Copy the files to the phone" I have downloaded all the files to my desktop and I want to unpack them in the folder called "root" from there I go into start->run and type cmd to go into command prompt
C:\root adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp/
C:\root adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
C:\root adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/ ...etc and so on correct?
I am trying to setup ADB using this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
INSTALLING ADB ON WINDOWS - METHOD B, THE "QUICK" WAY, NO SDK
However, the link for the file appears to be gone for step two. Curious as to where I could find it.
best to install sdk in C:/ then if you can set adb.exe in your windows enviroment
Ah neato, that guide links to mine =P
Anyways you should try following this guide to set up ADB and fastboot. Then from there you are free to choose any method for rooting your device. I personally would use psneuter to temp root and then permanent root via gfree. Its just safer overall and a lot easier if you just follow the steps.

Ok guys, first of all Scotty2 gets all the credit for the program R&D. I used my device as a test bed and have tried a couple different kernels (Gr8Gorilla's O/C Kernel and the stock kernel).
Now for the boring stuff ...
This is a very invasive way of rooting your device but the benefit is TRUE S=Off and root privileges throughout the system. As such, you do this at your own risk and if you brick your device neither Scotty2 nor myself are responsible, YOU ARE!!! Do this at your own risk!!!
This is not for the faint of heart and if you have any reservations about doing things like this do not do it.
This process will do three things for your device. I will explain them here:
1. It will set up Super CID on your device allowing you to flash any carriers rom (not just tmobile). Giving you more freedom with your choice of software. The software still needs to be device specific to the glacier for compatability reasons though. Like vodafone glacier roms etc.
2. It will subsidy unlock your device. In other words, it will SIMUNLOCK your phone allowing you to use an AT&T sim card and so on in your device without needing the unlock code from HTC.
3. Most important of all it will turn the RADIO S=Off. This is the ultimate S=Off because the radio is what controls the security flag in the first place. Once you turn it off here it is off everywhere and will allow you pure unadulterated access to your device.
This process will not change your bootloader (unless your on 0.86.0000 and you follow the optional steps).
Now, you may be asking "Why do this? I already have root from your other guide and it has given me r/w access to system and recovery. I thought this meant we had permanent S=Off." This is only partially true. We have had an engineering bootloader and "Label" s=off not radio s=off. When you turn the security off in radio it is off permanently no matter what hboot you have installed engineering or otherwise. However, it is optional but you can still copy the engineering hboot over and it will allow you to flash whatever you like without (as much) fear of bricking your device.
This guide assumes you know how to use ADB. If you do not there are guides all over XDA to show you how. There is even a really good one in this forum. Also here is a video on how to setup adb discovered by topgun303: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UF5w1dKe2U
*NOTE*
For some reason this process can bork your recovery. If you notice after following the steps below that in order to reboot from recovery you have to uninstall/reinstall the battery and hit the power button, just install/reinstall clockwork recovery through Rom Manager in the android market and it will fix your problem.
CONFIRMED: Guide does work for pre-OTA devices!!! Thanks xanz!
Here we go:
If you are already permarooted per the other guide just follow the first 11 steps.
Make sure you have visionary installed on your device. (If you were already permarooted w/s=off ignore this step.)
Download this file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?s7afymwe2wb3x60 New version of gfree with more options! See below.
md5sum: b73c56ca0e21664c5756d4ad295063c5
1. Now unzip the file into your SDK tools directory.
2. Plug your device into your computer.
3. Now open explorer and hold down shift at same time you right mouse click on your SDK tools directory (platform-tools if you have the R8 version of the SDK). Select open command window here. If you are in linux (ubuntu) right mouse click on your SDK tools folder, choose actions, and choose open command window(or whatever it's called). Otherwise, open a command prompt and cd your way to your SDK tools directory.
4. Type "adb push gfree /data/local" and hit enter.
Optionally, you could dl the file to your phone use androzip or something like it to unzip the file and then use root explorer to move the file named gfree to /data/local. Not the gfree.h file. All the other files are source code inlcuded for the gnu license. This would skip the first 4 steps.
5. Now unplug your device from the computer.
6. Run visionary to gain temp root. (If you were already permarooted w/s=off ignore this step.)
7. Open terminal emulator on your device, type "su", and hit enter to gain root privileges.
8. Type "cd /data/local" and hit enter.
9. Now type "chmod 777 gfree" and hit enter to make the program executable.
10. Type "./gfree -f" and hit enter.
New features in gfree.
gfree usage:
gfree [-h|-?|--help] [-v|--version] [-s|--secu_flag on|off]
-h | -? | --help: display this message
-v | --version: display program version
-s | --secu_flag on|off: turn secu_flag on or off
-c | --cid <CID>: set the CID to the 8-char long CID
-S | --sim_unlock: remove the SIMLOCK
With the new features you can turn off one thing at a time. You can also turn security back on and set the CID back to stock if you wish. To turn simlock back on you still have to follow the revert procedures on this page as the information that is patched to turn the lock off is encrypted and we can't write back to it other than restoring the entire image.
So, if you wanted to leave simlock on but turn security off and set super CID the command would be "./gfree --secu_flag off --cid 11111111" + enter. The -f switch after ./gfree that is now in the above step (./gfree -f) just tells gfree to patch everything.
11. Wait for the program to finish and then reboot into HBoot to see if S=Off. Also, check your bootloader version. If it says s=off and has bootloader version 0.86.0000 it worked.
If you already had hboot 0.85.2007 you can check it through the hboot menu. It gives you an option for "system info" in the hboot menu. Highlight it and hit power. It should say CID = 11111111 or something like that. If it does your golden.
Congratulations!
12. If this is the first time you have rooted your device you will need to run visionary again (temproot w/set system r/w after root checked and then attempt permroot) to make root privileges permanent and then reboot again. Now "su" should work properly for you.
Gfree writes a backup of the file that it patches named Part7backup-numbers.bin on your sdcard. I suggest putting this file in a safe place as it is the only way to revert if you need to.
[Optional] Steps to flash engineering bootloader.
1. Restart your phone and plug it back into your computer.
2. Download this file: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NN5726Z8
md5sum: df4fd77f44993eb05a4732210d2eddc6
3. Copy the file to your SDK tools directory.
4. Open a command prompt again and cd into your SDK tools directoty (platform-tools if your on the new R8 SDK).
5. Type "adb push hboot_dhd.nb0 /data/local" and hit enter.
6. Now open terminal on your device and type "su" and enter to gain root priviliges.
7. Type "cd /data/local" and enter.
8. Now type "dd if=hboot_dhd.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18" and hit enter.
9. You should see something like: 2048 bytes in 2048 bytes out 1048576 bytes copied blah blah blah.
10. Now restart the device into hboot and check if your bootloader version is 0.85.2007. That is what you want to see.
Congratulations, you now have a TRUE root and engineering bootloader on your shiny MT4G!!!
Procedure to revert
1. Rename the part7backup file that you already have to something just so you know that it is the original backup.
2. Open up terminal emulator or adb shell and type "su" + enter to get root privileges.
3. Type "cd /data/local" and hit enter.
4. Now type "./gfree -f" + enter to run gfree again. It will disable wp on the emmc and remove the brq filter in the kernel. (as well as make another backup, which you can delete if you wish)
5. Now run the "dd if=/where/your/part7backup-numbers.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7" and it should show the output:
xxxx bytes in
xxxxbytes out
xxxxxxxxxx copied in blah blah blah
6. Run "sync" and then reboot. (I didn't do this and it worked fine but it won't hurt either. )
If you have the engineering hboot 0.85.2007 installed you will still be showing s=off when you do the above revert steps. Follow these steps to reflash the stock hboot and turn s=on:
Download this file and unzip it to /sdcard on your device.
unroot.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/?12oi5elu7v2y8og
md5sum: aad4e64126cf8d92d7e8b5abb48fdadd
Terminal Emulator Method
1. Open up terminal editor on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. Type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/unroot" + enter.
c. Type "sh unroot.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the onscreen prompts.
File Explorer Method
2. Open root explorer, sufbs, or some other file browser with root access.
a. Navigate to /sdcard/unroot.
b. Click on unroot.sh and allow it to run. Some file browsers ask permission before they execute scripts.
c. Wait 18 to 20 seconds and reboot your phone into the bootloader to check if S=on.
You now have S=ON again.
Here is a pic of the stock HBoot 0.86.0000 with S=Off to prove it.
If already on ENG bootloader, S-OFF, and perm rooted via your other guide would we be able to just run gfree for the "radio/sim" unlock?

Yes, that's what I did. Good call btw! I wrote the guide in a hurry just before heading to work and knew I would miss something.

u could use root explorer to place the gfree file in data local couldn't u?
Yes you could use root explorer. I am going to revise this as soon as I get time. I'm at work right now.
As for the optional steps, you wouldn't need to do them if you already followed the other permroot guides successfully b/c you should alread have hboot 0.85.2007 installed.

so is the 0.85.2007 is the one we want to be on?

Good to go. You have the engineering hboot.
Should work from either one as long as you have some kind of root access.
But ... Keep that one.

sweet thanks, and the whole talk about subsidy unlock and flashing other device roms, is that part of the hboot im running, or the gfree file ?

Hey grankin01 I dont have adb steup, can you provide workaround for that. Meaning without adb.
Awesome man. Great job. Just to be clear. After unzipping the file, all of them need to go in the data/local folder yes?
So we can use root explorer to oaste the file, then the termunal steps?

You should be able to use root explorer and yes put all files in /data/local including the hboot_dhd.nb0 file if you are going to do the optional steps.
Edit: Added mention of root explorer method between steps 4 and 5.

hey grankin01 my phone is on engineer bootloader right now. what are the advantages of engineer bootloader vs bootloader version 0.86.0000?
Also if i flash bootloader version 0.86.0000, can i go back to engineer bootloader.

Eng hboot will let you flash anything you want. Stock hboot will still limit your choices.
Yes you can just do the optional steps from the OP to go back to eng hboot. Actually having stock hboot will let you see if it worked without having to do anything special.

So this did work w/stock device and kernel?
Try running visionary r14 and doing permroot option. Being a stock rom you may still have to fiddle with it a little. Not quite an exact science.
My MyGlacier 4G MINE!!!
So the bootloader version 0.86.0000 provides simunlock correct? If i read correct from the first page of op. For now i think i will stay on engineer hbootloader.
Also one more thing op, I found a great video on how to setup adb. I have already got my adb setup using this. If u like you can post it in the op section. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UF5w1dKe2U
i have been reading up on getting s-off on so many threads. My situation is that i have had perm root since visionary r14 has been launched but i still do not have s-off. what do i need to do to get this done since im already perm rooted. i am missing out on all the roms and overclocking. i just want to take my phone to the next level. i have a desire z thats rooted but no s-off. realy appreciate this if anyone can point in the right direction.
you need android sdk from here
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
read this to learn how to use adb shell
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
then follow this, basically you need to gain super user access by temp rooting with visionairy (thats what i did) then push the files to the destinations given in the link below, then you just follow the rest and youll be fully unlocked, rooted and s-off'ed lol
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843014
if you get stuck report back but if you read up on adb you should be fine look at the stickies thread for more info, hope this helps thank me if it did!
Thanks very much I'm going to start reading up on adb. One quick queation. You mentioned that I will have to perform another temp root, does it matter that I am already perm rooted.? Do I have to unroot first using visionary one click unroot?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
No need to temproot. Just follow the instructions in the Wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Unlock_the_Phone.2C_Set_SuperCID.2C_and_Turn_Radio_S-OFF.
You don't need ADB either. You can do everything in Terminal on your phone (though instead of pushing the file with ADB as instructed in the Wiki, you can stick the file on your SD card and then copy it to the correct location).
Wicked Thanks so much illgive it a go. I'll message back to let you know it worked. Thanks again.

yeah its probabally easier doing it ianmcquinn's way matey
but it wont hurt to learn adb if your into that sort of thing its quite fun!
anyway if ya get stuch just post back, someone will be here to help
Good Luck!
remember when you have s-off, get rom manager from the market and get the premium one cus its always nice to donate
then download clockwork mod from rom manager ! you can perform nandroid backups and all sorts of coool stuff!
hi ianmcquinn you mentioned to stick the gfree file in my sd card and then copying it to the location. im not sure in which location your talking about. i tried using the commands thru the phones terminal but when i type chmod 777 gfree it tells me "unable to chmod gfree no such file directory".? do i have to make a folder chmod gfree and stick the files in there ?
su
cd /data/local
chmod 777 gfree
./gfree -f
sync
thanks for your time everyone. i really feel that im close and im just missing a step.
just setup adb and i got s-off :0
thanks very much for posting these threads now its time to play with my desire z. overclocking here we come and some new roms
About 3 hours ago, I won a Desire Z (wheeey!) at the HTC London meetup. Naturally, I came straight here after the help I got in January rooting my Desire.
I used the Visionary method and obtained temp root status, and then attempted perm root, which seemed to work. All of the guides I have read include a bunch of steps after this, one of which included deleting Visionary, which I then did. I just turned the phone off, took the battery out for a bit and then turned it back on. I still have the Superuser icon and the Terminal Emulator indicates that I have root access... is that it then? It's that simple?
Please tell me if I've done anything wrong, as I don't want to flash Cyanogen and Clockwork Recovery if it's all going to go to hell on me. Any advice or confirmation on whether or not I've obtained perm root would be lovely.
Oh, my firmware version is 1.34.405... etc. Is this simply the last version which allows for such easy root?

In theory, yes; in practice, no. Visionary (with the G2/Desire Z, at least) is known to be a bit buggy. You shouldn't have any issues installing custom ROMs but, I would recommend using the wiki method to root.

My understanding, if he already used Visionary to root, and it worked than he should be good to go. Either it works, or it doesn't. The risk with Visionary is that it sometimes corrupts some partitions, which causes the phone to not boot. I haven't read any conclusive reports on Visionary causing long term issues (correct me if I'm wrong).

This is my understanding as well, though I'd probably still use GFREE to get S-OFF if I were OP.
That's my next question, I'm using this guide ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2 ) to try and get S-Off to flash Cyanogen and I'm wondering what step to start on, assuming from your replies that I'm rooted already.
I know it's a bit of a dumb question, but I just don't wanna fudge my new phone.

Whoa the Wiki method is completely different, looks like it was rewritten on 04/01.
You can completely ignore the temp rooting steps and concentrate on the gfree steps
From the "Necessary Files" section you need gfree, flash_image and ClockWorkMod Recovery
I would use the latest ClockWorkMod recovery rather than the one listed on the Wiki:
http://mirrorbrain.cyanogenmod.com/cm/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img (of course it's only the latest as of the time of this writing)
From step 2 you need to use:
Code:
$ adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
$ adb push flash_image /data/local/tmp/
From step 2.a you need to use:
Code:
$ adb push recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img /data/local/tmp/recovery.img
Again note that the file name for CWM will depend on the version of CWM you are using.
Skip to step 4.b you need to use:
Code:
# cd /data/local/tmp
# ./gfree -f
# ./flash_image recovery recovery.img
# sync
Continue on as normal from here.
I skipped the temp root and perm root sections as you are already perm root.
I also skipped the ENG HBOOT parts, since that's not strictly necessary and the most risky part of the whole process (one mistake can result in a brick). If you want to flash the ENG HBOOT you would need to follow steps 4.a instead of 4.b, (you would also need the necessary HBOOT of course) the only command you need to omit from 4.a or 4.b is "# ./root_psn" which is the script which establishes permanent root.
Thanks a lot so far man, but I'm still stuck. I have adb, when I open it in the SDK, it flows for a bit, then closes. This is right, right? I'm meant to do all of these prompts via the cmd window?
OK, I've now sorted adb, but I can't get anything to work past that. Nothing will transfer to my phone and I'm going to kill... somebody.

You say you've sorted adb, but can you be more specific please ? What works and what doesn't work exactly ?
Ah, yeah, sorry. I got to the point where when I type in "adb devices" in the command window, it shows me my phone, with the serial number and whatnot. However, whenever i try the command:
$ adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
It just won't work. I have all the files together in my desktop at the moment, having moved them from the downloads folder on my laptop. Is there a specific place I should have the stuff I need to send to my phone?
There is a great write up here about getting adb working. It sounds like either you didn't set up a "path" to use those commands anywhere or if you don't want to do that make sure your files are in the same folder as your adb.

Ah, yeah, sorry. I got to the point where when I type in "adb devices" in the command window, it shows me my phone, with the serial number and whatnot. However, whenever i try the command:
$ adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
It just won't work. I have all the files together in my desktop at the moment, having moved them from the downloads folder on my laptop. Is there a specific place I should have the stuff I need to send to my phone?

You need to have the files (extracted from the ZIP files you downloaded) in the same folder you run the ADB commands, if your ADB is in your path you should be able to run ADB commands from any folder.
To summarize you need to extract all the zips you downloaded under necessary files, all to the same folder. The open a command prompt and CD to that folder before you start using your adb push commands.

Yeah, steviewevie wrote it:

But it looks like he is willing to give the OP some personalized help.
Right, thanks guys, I think I'm making some progress.
ADB is all set up, and as far as I'm aware, having:
program files > android sdk > platform tools
on my path should mean I can open adb from anywhere right? I have all of the extracted files in platform tools, where adb is, in my program files... is this right, or have I completely missed the point here?
I keep getting "cannot stat 'gfree':: No such file or directory"
Sorry, I seem really stupid concerning this whole thing, but I'm sure it's something equally obvious that I'm just not seeing.
New problem. I worked out what I'd done wrong there, and got everything onto my phone. However, when trying to change the directory to /data/local/tmp, I keep getting "The system cannot find the path specified"
Now what am I doing wrong?

Remember you are running those commands (everything in that section) from an ADB shell, not from the Windows command prompt.
Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly do you mean by that? What should I do?
Hi I have rooted my Desire and now rooting my Desire Z but it is so much harder.
I'm rooting after this tutorial. But I dont understand start of all this. "You will need to push two of these to your phone: hboot_7230_0.84.2000_100908.nb0 and wpthis-Z.ko. The other two files are optional for checksum verification.
"
So I have to open my windows cmd?
what I have to write before
adb push hboot_7230_0.84.2000_100908.nb0 /data/local
adb push wpthis-Z.ko /data/local
so these files go to my phone?
I have to use charge only or disc drive?

Hi!
Don't follow this guide! It is heavily outdated.
Either follow the "official" guide at the wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
If you have a Desire Z with a software version higher than 1.34 you have to downgrade it first (but thats also described at the wiki)
Have fun - Guhl
Hi, I need to temproot my DHD for some school work in order to run some commands via ADB Shell in superuser mode. IMPORTANT: I need to root it only TEMPORARILY, not permanently. I've got my reasons.
I was wondering if someone can recommend the best and EASIEST method out there to temproot the DHD. Here is my situation in point form:
My phone
=======
-Desire HD
-2.3.3 Gingerbread
-S-ON
I need to
=======
-Gain # access via adb shell (in workstation) in order to run some commands
-It doesn't matter if the temporary root is removed when i reboot the device, I only need to run a few commands in superuser mode and that's it
IMPORTANT: My Limitations
=====================
-I AM NOT ALLOWED TO PERMANENTLY ROOT THE DEVICE
-I need to keep modification of the device and its data to a bare minimum, the less the better
-I am not allowed to downgrade the device
-I don't need, and am not allowed, to flash custom ROMs onto the device
I've read about VISIONary, Gingerbreak and Advanced Ace Hack Kit, but VISIONary was not designed for 2.3.3, the Gingerbreak thread states that it doesn't work with S-ON devices and AAHK results in permanent rooting, not temporary.
Any advice/recommendations would be IMMENSELY appreciated, I really need to carry this out within the given limitations.
Thanks
You have a few option their is the frevo exploit, zergrush, and taco root.
Jkoljo root guide uses the frevo exploit in a more manual way so that might be your best bet. You'll will probably just need the beginning part of it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8927
try tacoroot exploit
it helps you gain temproot in adb shell to run the commands you want and can help you later on get permroot if u decide to
