Hardware is identical besides NFC and flip keyboard.
We currently have a deodexed stock GB 2.3.4 ROM on the NS4G forum. I bet if you flash it and then follow it with one of your kernels it would work just fine.
What do you think?

This would be quite a breakthrough, but too easy for one. whats the catch?
And all we would need todo is port our keyboard.apk, camera, and...oh would need to re-direct any coding back to the sd card would that be one?
since the nexus is internal memory only?
Not really. Nexus S still mounts the sd so I believe it's just internal. As far as kernel... I think it might actually work without the hardware keyboard. But don't take my word for it. Ask a developer.

I'm sure CM7 team has been informed of this by now.(hope so) and idk if k0nane has but he needs to. I'm sure ACS would enjoy the bragging rights of porting over a fully working 2.3.4 ROM
Hypothetically, if you flashed it and it worked, how would you get back into download mode to flash the stock ROM back onto it. Is there any way to get into download mode besides holding the 1 key and power?
I think that the download mode is part of the bootloader. If you just flash the rom, the bootloader remains the same.

well as we said, some coding would need to be ported. Especially the keyboard.
But you know download mode work's even if the phone has NO ROM in it correct? rom doesn't affect the epic's default hardware settings

The nexus s mounts different then the epic. Your goin have to open up the updater-script and change the mount points before flashing

Not sure why but the .tar file is followed by a .md5 extention, so I just removed it and it became a .tar, just for others to know, thanks
the md5 extension is so you know it hasnt been messed with, and so you know the download is not corrupt...
odin flashes md5s and checks the downloads...
What would be the benefit of flashing this versus your other similar kernel? Sorry if this is a stupid question....
Thank you so much. This is perfect. Do have a question. Does this have a new version of cwm or the same one from yesterday? I ask cause the back soft button wasn't working and the storage mounts were reversed. Just checking to see if that has been fixed.

It is the same just without root and busybox. He made it for those of us that prefer having root controlled at the system level versus the kernel. You don't lose anything either way. If you use this you have to make sure you are running an already rooted rom. There is less conflict by doing this since most, if not all, roms are already rooted.

Once again thanks for you help. One last stupid question before I retire from stupidity, but how do I know which way I am rooted? I thought the only way to root was FROM the kernel. I ask because I'm specifically on midnight rom v2 and have no clue which way I'm rooted.
Is there any way someone could upload a mirror to a different site? I'm wanting to flash this but I'm at work and my company is blocking the site that the link is for. If you can that would be awesome if not, no big deal. I'll try and get it when I get home.
Edit: Nevermind. Managed to get it from my phone.
I can up it to megaupload if that helps Tiffany.

Just curious, if someone has flashed chris' previous kernel, what benefit is there supposed to be? Is it not the same stock kernel with some tweaks? Especially if you're concerned with losing root. Not singling anyone out, just curious as to the rationale.

Because kernels that have forced copying of root & busybox cause issues when you start using complete custom ROMs because they overwrite files that are already included. Plus if your including a custom recovery, what the point of including root, etc when the user can now flash what they want?
Also, Chris, the recovery you have included in this won't mount the internal storage or even make a backup to it or recover, it only wants to use the external sd card and since I don't use one because of the delay it causes coming from sleep, I can't do anything except test flash stuff
I flashed this around noon and once my phone rebooted, I updated my 'profile' under 'about phone'. Everything seemed fine, an hour later...I had a LOS, rebooted and got it back, an hour later, same thing...LOS. Rebooted and I updated the profile again, it's fine for now.
Do we have to update profile every time we do a reboot??
Didn't have any issues when in stock.

Nope. One clicks don't work on 2.3.5. You need to use Odin to install CWM 5.027, then pull the battery before it boots, power up into CWM first then flash a custom GB ROM.

No but it qbkings tutorial he says to flash the kernel first.... then flash Cwm just saying it would be less chance of error. Something in the stock kernel has a script that searches for cwm and causes it to delet after the first boot anyways.....

Flashing a custom rom.... and a custom kernel.
Suggestions: legendary 2.2 and the samurai or shadow kernel
MarcusantRom revival v2..... just go through the android development forums to see which rom you'd like to use. Just be careful what your trying to download thought. If your Rom is BML or MTD then you have to download that type of kernel.

edit.
haha forgot there was a second page..... use remember you can go from bml to bml, or bml to mtd, mtd to mtd type roms. YOU CAN NOT JUST FLASH FROM MTD TO BML!!! you must odin back to ec05 and make sure repartition is checked and use the victory pit. happy playing
just remember though... after reading the information on these forums, and you are still unsure or whatever... ask questions, ask questions , ask questions...

Yeah its gone, But I think Its only cosmetic and never an actual bug. People have OS super high and get 4-6 hours of screen time. I dont think it has anything to do battery.

That's because that's what most everybody gets, and that number is really pretty good. nobody will get 6 hours of screen on time with a stock battery...probably not even with an extended battery. I think the Android OS bug is real, at least I've noticed pretty big decrease since going to these ics alphas. Since I've tried the leaked official...battery has been tons better.

Yes but of course you made it sound like because yours is working. You could have no idea why his isn't working... probably because a lot of peoples isn't working.... dude really, just don't reply to me, ever, cuz you honestly usually don't know what you are talking about and its quite annoying... have a great day....

Ever thought of possibly reinstall start from fresh. I said it to you because you made it seem like I don't know what I'm talking about. There are somethings yes. But don't doubt me just because I have a working version. I never dirty flash not since ICS.
Sorry that I was just showing how mine was working when most aren't.

I have never dirty flashed... that's a bad habit to have... and I've redownloaded and reflashed many times.... I just flash marcusants cwm restore zip and work with 5.x.x.x. whatever the version number is.... don't be sorry... just don't say you don't see how others aren't working when yours is... (which you did, read back, you'll find it.....)
Sorry i guess I worded it wrong my bad but I understand your point are you completely stock because I didn't use his return CWM. I just wiped and installed CM9. So it uses the baked in version of CWM recovery.
I don't use custom kernels anymore on my Epic coming from a Voodoo Color Lover lol.

CWM6? Yes, i've used that as well on CM9 & 10. As for the Epic(my daily), i'd like to know if anyone knows where I can find a later version than v5.0.2.7 ?
I've seen v5.5.0.4, but I believe that isn't for the Epic.
What I like about the newer versions of CWM is auto-scroll. (when you just hold down/up on the volume button and away you go, VS "click-click-click-click. UGH" )
Also, Im currently on (my fav) The People's Rom (TPR). I am hoping any newer version of CWM will work with the Epic and the rom.
Feedback will be awarded with thank you's nd smileys

Isn't CWM 6 exclusive to AOSP based roms, like CM or MIUI?
5.0.2.7 is a work of art, many many thanks, DRockstar (wherever you are!)

Heck yeah 5.0.2.7 is the latest and greatest. TWRP recovery is pretty good too, but I think that is only exclusive to some newer Roms. CWM 5.0.2.7 is about your best bet, unless you like CWM's older recovery versions but I would not recommend that.
And just another Thank you to DRockstar, awesome job! I've been using it for all different kinds of things and I haven't had one problem.
Thanks for all the input. But just in case where can I get v6 from

You can try CWM touch it Is in the dev forum just flash it like any zip

EMERGENCY!!! I've been following your guides for rooting, etc. Now I was trying to flash a ROM, and when the phone booted into recovery, I didn't get the usual blue list of options. There were a few options, and then in yellow *MANUAL MODE* ... I tried flashing the roms anyway and it said in red "signature verification failure" ... and "operation aborted" (something like that) WTF?!?!? HEEEEELP!!!!

Sounds like you don't have a custom recovery in your phone yet. Look into flashing twrp's touch recovery. You tried to flash through the stock recovery.
Download ROM toolbox from market and to flash a recovery(twrp) go to tools>manage Rom and then on the top choose the manage tab. The top of the list is the option to flash a recovery. Flash recovery and then you could come back to the app to flash the ROM of your choice.

Thank you - and I'm sorry for my ignorance, but where do I find that and how do I install it?
I just edited my post, read again.
I guess I should ask, are you rooted? Or have you not done that yet? That app will not work without being rooted and without superuser permissions.

Yes, definitely rooted. Just wanted to try new roms aside from stock. Had the ROM MANAGER and tried to flash from there as well, same issue came up. I'll try your solution now.
Thanks!

YOU... ROCK.
It worked! Not sure what I did wrong to start with and the behind the scenes is a mystery to me, but it worked!!! Thank you!!!
So... 1) what do you think is the best custom ROM out there right now?, and 2) what's the difference between ROM Toolbox and ROM Manager?

I used to use ROM manager but I switched to ROM toolbox. I just simply like it better. More options. I haven't used ROM manager in a while, so I don't even know what the current version offers. I prefer phantomhacker's blazer ROM. But if you like themed roms, there are a few out there. I am not on any custom ROM right now, just stock rooted with a few mods and tweaks. I had blazer ROM on my gs2 and was my favorite on that phone too. Just do allot of reading on each roms thread so you can see if there are any issues. I always read read read before flashing.

THANK YOU once again.
Final question - is there a list somewhere here with all the ROMs out there for the GS3?
Sprint galaxy s3 android development section. It will say [ROM] in the title. If you are looking for cm9, cm10, aosp, or aokp type roms, look in the Sprint galaxy s3 original android development section.

Your welcome. You can always PM me if you have any other issues and I will try to help. If I don't answer right away it just means I haven't seen the message yet.

I promise I'm not trying to insult you, but:
1. Your choice of thread title doesn't explain anything.
2. Your original post wasn't very coherent.
3. You failed to do the first thing when buying a new phone, which is read, read, read before even downloading a ROM.
Next time, please be as clear and detailed as possible when describing an issue, and choose a more relevant thread title. Next, troubleshoot; if the phone says "operation aborted", try rebooting the phone. Tell us what happened and what you've done.
