[Q] Is updating Radio good or/and recommened? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

(Sorry about the other thread. The descriptions sometimes are not worded correctly on the subforums and I get confused. Again my apoligies)
Hey
I have CM7 installed and Im wondering if its recommened and/or a good idea to update the radio. I wondered this because I have slight signal and Wifi problems that may be corrected with the radio.
Also, how do I apply this? Just flashing with ClockWork Recovery?

There is a thread in the dev section that has a list of all the radios that are compatible with the G2/DZ. You cannot flash a new radio through CWM and have to do it through the bootloader.
Simplest way of flashing is to download the PC10IMG.zip file from the thread and let the phone do the work for you.
1. Download the PC10IMG.zip file
2. Place in the ROOT of your SD card (not in any folders)
3. Reboot the phone into the bootloader
4. Phone will detect the zip file and ask to flash, allow it to flash
5. DO NOT disturb the phone while flashing as you will have a brick
6. Reboot when complete!
You may want to check out RMK's radio matcher to get the libs aligned. Not sure if it helps, but people do say it works.
Have fun!

So you can change freely with Desire Z compatible radios without worrying about bricking right?

There is all ways a risk of bricking with radios. The general advice is "if it aint broke dont try to fix it". But if you are having problems with gps, wifi etc, just follow the instructions andyou should be fine.

I have slight for example wifi disconnecting issues.
My doubt starts on the first step: How do I know that I have the engineering HBOOT installed? If not, how do I install it?

How to upgrade HBOOT and RADIO (S-OFF)

Dear all,
i hope you not hate me because this noobs question...
i use ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5
and already S-OFF.
now i want to upgrade my Radio and Hboot.
what should i do..?
is it just the same like flashing the ROM..?
thx
download the radio & hboot files that you would like to upgrade to.
rename it to PB31IMG.zip and place on the root of your sd card.
boot into bootloader and it will ask you if you want to update, press up to confirm.
BE SURE TO NANDROID BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING
Quoted from another thread...
willhill said:
FYI, the hboot loop occurs because installing hboot wipes your kernel. Install a kernal and you'll be good to go, no nandroid required.

So make sure you have a kernel or an entire rom ready to flash, as you probably will be looping without it.
thx for your helping answer ...
is there anything else that might change if i upgrade HBOOT or RADIO ? (besides kernel).
Im having a problem updating my radio. Everytime I boot into bootloader it tells me that there is No/Wrong Image
Bump need help solving this

Radios and HBoot images are not to play around with. If you don't know what you are doing this is the EASY way to brick your phone. Read, read, and read some more on what you are doing before you just go screwing with critical elements of your phone.

[Q] Some Questions

Hi all!
OK so I read all the tutorials and noob proof guides. P)
But I still have some points that I didn't understand.
[1] Does my phone has to be S-OFF so I can flash new ROMs?
[2] Should I flash the radio before or after the (ROM name).zip file?
+ Some problems with ROM Manager, I'll provide some pics so you devs can identify the issue.
As you can see it recognizes my ClockWorkMod as unknown !(?) and when I try to download the ClockWorkMod an error pops up.
Alot of thanks!
hi,
to answer Ur questions:
1/ no need S-OFF to flash rom's
2/ you don't need to flash radio unless its recommended by the rom's dev or U are issued with yours. (meanwhile you need to be S-OFF to flash radio)
3/ annoying the issues with rom manager, as you talking about recovery I assume your device is already rooted. Havu U check the SU on your device??
you should meet un special icone SU like a ninja in the app's and maybe install an app which requires root privileges like ES explorer (is free).
should i say that even you download the recovery through rom manager and you flash it. it would be a fake, mean that on reboot you got the previous one's.
From my own private feelings I don't use rom manager (prefere do it manually) and use as recovery amon_RA
So i don't have great experience with rom manager, surely others would gives you a good answer about RM
3. Don't use ROM Manager. It's a waste of time. Copy the ROM.zip to your SD card, boot into Recovery and flash it from there
Yes my device is rooted, and there is no need to plug my phone to USB when flashing new ROMs, right?

2) true you don't need to flash a radio, some work better than others just needs to be compatible and takes some experimenting. i'm pretty sure you don't need to be S-OFF to flash one though. I flashed 5.14.05.17 before i did S-OFF.
3) i've always done it manually too, never thru rom manager...

[Q] how do you uprade the radio for g2?

i was going to flash the g lite rom for the g2 and it said something about choosing a radio, i downloaded it but now what? i know how to install roms and such but ive never dealt with installing a radio, i couldnt find out how to do it so i was wondering if someone could help me out on this :? also whats the advantages of doing so?
Flashing radios can be dangerous, my advice is flash the rom and don't worry about the radio just yet. run the rom for a couple of days, if you feel that your wifi / mobile signal and battery life is not as good as it was before you flashed, then consider flashing the radion.
The easiest way to flash radios is using a PC10IMG.zip. download from the radio link in my sig (its the one recommended for G-Lite) and place on the root of your sdcard then reboot in to the boot loader and follow the instructions it gives you. The phone will reboot and your new radio will be flashed. Make sure you move or delete the PC10IMG.zip from the root of your sdcard if not everytime you go in to the bootloader it will ask you. To reflash.

No the one in the G-Lite thread is the img file and needs to be flashed via fastboot, you will need to check the radio thread in the dev section for instructions.

In the link for the radios it does detail how to flash a PC10IMG.zip I suggest you read carefully and follow the more detailed instructions.
Might be safer to download from the thread as well as you can check the MD5 sums against four download. I can't remember where my download is from so you wouldn't be able to check.

hey man thanks i followed your instructions and it worked, is it one of the best radios? cause i didnt like g lite so i used xboarders rom, no problems so far but is the radio in your sig good for any rom?
Total noob here,
im about to flash the radio but i dont know if md5 sums matching are relevant here.
i installed the "G-Lite Rom, Virtuous" (md5 64dc139218c502dd6b4e9b4ebdd5dcc9) from forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076786,
but none of the radios on the "Glite" thread seems to match. Ur thought?
negate my last post, i had a little captain in me and just did it. Ridiculously simple, much thanks

[Q] Post Custom Rom Installation

Hi !
So I finally did it : I've just finished the installation of a custom rom (Virtuous Unity 1.29.0).
Needless to say it was painful, even with the great tutorials available here.
I had to make a gold card with the SD card provided with Desire HD (haven't got any other one), downgrade, Radio & ENG S-OFF, Clockwork, backup and flash.
It was painful mostly because you have to click here to do this, but there you have to click on another link to do that before...
In the end, I only had a minor issue with ENG S-OFF (related to that unknown su authorization).
I was a little scared after the final reboot as the rom took its time to load but everything's working fine.
So thanks to all tutorials/tips writers
I just have few minor questions, mostly related to the rom but I can't write them in the proper thread :
- Seems the rom is bundled with the proper radio, was it flashed in the process or do I have to flash it myself ? If yes, where are the files ?
- Do I have to keep ENG S-OFF now that I'm done ? Or does the rom require this option to be off ? I'd rather have this security feature turned back on if possible.
Radios are flashed using fastboot you will need to do that separately.
If you follow the link in my signature to my site you can find all the latest radios there. Some are even packaged ready to flash using the small tool I wrote.

Then the short answer is stop trying to flash it until you go s-off. As far as I understand one limitation of dev unlock is that you can't flash things like radios.

^^^What he said, and you have the file named incorrectly (should be PG321IMG.zip). If you want to flash the firmware, obtain S-OFF first. After obtaining S-OFF, you must place the renamed file onto the sd-card. Make sure fastboot is unchecked under your phone settings. Boot into the bootloader and let it do its thing, then reboot.
