[Q] Custom ROM-a drama

I might be doing it wrong...I'm not an expert with this particular device, but I have managed to root and install custom Roms on an Augen Gentouch, a Nook Color, and a Samsung Moment before I got my G2.
I love the G2, and it took me a while to get up to speed on the lingo for this particular device...but I'm sorta getting it.
Last night I went to work in earnest to root and flash my phone with a custom ROM. Once I found the gfree tutorial and learned what s-off was and all that good stuff, I finally managed to achieve permaroot. Cool.
So I grab Clockwork Rom Manager, which I hear can really make my life easy...unfortunately I had no luck flashing any custom ROMs from there at all. I downloaded each one from the app, rebooted into recovery (yes, it was the most current version), and tried to flash a CM7 nightly. Ended up in an endless boot animation loop.
So I decide maybe I'm pushing my luck w/ Gingerbread as a first custom ROM...so I go in and try the CM6.1 ROM I also had in the downloads folder for Rom Manager. Different logo, another loop. Thinking I'd semi-bricked my device, I start diving in some more. Hey cool...I can use HBoot to flash a stock image back. I do so, and I have a blank, working device. Ok, back to square one.
So yeah...re-root with a clean phone, install Rom Manager, download and flash CM6 and again with the boot loops. :-/
So I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. Am I supposed to have to navigate to the .zip file when flashing? I mean, when I got to recovery and it didn't start flashing, I assumed I needed to choose and load the ROM of my choice from the clockworkmod/downloads/ folder, but maybe I'm doing it wrong? In any case, I'd love to be able to run one of these snazzy custom ROMs, but for now I'm just gonna have to be happy with permaroot and the Bacon Bits .zip and the kernel that comes with that. Overclocking is nice...I'm eager to try Gingerbread though.
Any thoughts?

I was tring to follow what you have done but got a little confused , do you have a custom recovery flashed? ie. CWM recovery 2.5.1.3. If yes, are you wiping /data and /cache before flashing the custom rom in recovery?
How to flash the rom manually:
Install custom Rom to the root of sd card (and gapps.zip for CM roms)
Boot into recovery
Make a back up of your current rom
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
go into Advance setting
wipe dalvik cache
return to main menu in recovery
select " install zip from sd card"
select "choose zip from sdcard"
select the rom you want to flash from sdcard
and flash it
if flashing CM Rom you also must flash the gapps .zip
go back to choose zip from sdcard
select "gapps.zip"
flash it
go back to main menu in recovery
select "rebooot system now"
Should boot into the custom Rom you flashed.
If you want to flash Gingerbread roms you need to flash CWM recovery 3.0.0.5, do not mistake this with Rom Manager v3.0.0.7.

Yah u probibly used clockwork 2.1.5 for gingerbread/cm7 Clockwork 3 is stricktly for ginger

Ah, ok...that makes more sense (all the stuff that needs to be cleared first, etc...). As far as recovery, it looks like I have 3.0.0.0. how do I get 3.0.0.5? I had to do a little hack mentioned in another thread to get 3.0.0.0 on there...do I need to find and rename the .zip for CWR and have ROM Manager flash it? Or is there an official way to do it?

I think you have to flash CWM3.0.0.5 with fastboot.

Thanks for the help guys! I started fresh, flashed back to stock, rooted with gfree, and installed CM6.1.1. I am an absolute convert. Cyanogen is utterly brilliant!
I've since installed a custom kernel, OC'd to 1.4Ghz (scaling on demand), flashed Clockwork Recovery 3.0.0.5, eng hboot, and a new radio. I think I've got my head wrapped around this phone now...and I LOVE IT! I'm really tempted to try CM7, but I'm coming off a phone with some real issues (Samsung Moment), and I'm trying to relax and enjoy a stable build for now...but yeah...holy crap is CM awesome! Thanks for the help...XDA is really a great community!

[Q] Galaxy S Captivate, ROM Manager-CWM Issues

Noob here. No longer a virgin after this post. Ok, I have been reading for weeks and have most of the basic understanding down on phone setup and flashing using ROM Manager/CWM but still having issues I can't find answers to so here goes.
Samsung Captivate running 2.2 flashed from ODIN one click. Backed up apps and data using TI backup. I have installed ROM Manager, picked the Dragon ROM to flash and here are my problems.
1. ROM Manager 4.2.0.2 - Pick Flash CWM Recovery- 2.5.1.2, pick captivate, "successfully downloaded CWM Recovery" (did not say "installed" CW Recovery). Where did it download to and how do I install? Its not in My Files. Some of the recovery options are missing when in Sys recovery <3e>and don't look like the options listed in posts.
A. Tried to backup current ROM with RManager - It gave me a stamped file name, said "backed up" within a few seconds but when I click "manage and restore backups" I just get a black screen. Can't find the backed up ROM nor the files listed on one of the posts??? I read it takes several minutes and the copied files scroll. This did not happen.
B. Install ROM from SD card - Everyone has said make sure the ROM is installed in the "root", but exactly which file are we talking about??. No one ever says which file exactly. I use Droid Explorer and there is a file named SD Card, then SD. Which file is the ROM to be installed in? No file called "root". I used SD file and renamed it update.zip. I click "install ROM from SD" then pick SD and the update.zip file, click all three options (B/U ROM, wipe data N cache, dalvik cache then ok. Phone reboots, click reinstall packages, ERROR: E:failed to verify whole file signature - E: signature verification failed, installation aborted.
2. I have read to reinstall 2.1 via ODIN before flashing new ROM's. Trying to flash "Dragon ROM RC7" "Full Flash" which is 2.2.1. Can I not just flash this over 2.2?
I know there is more. I was up till 2 last night and tried to get all issues posted here. Like I said, pretty new to the ROM thing but not a dummy and can follow instructions. Have read a ton but there is sooo much out there. If anyone can help me through this I would be very greatful. Hitting the frustration point real quick now.
Found this: ROM Mgr 4.2.0.2 "Samsung users: You must flash a Clockwork compatible kernel first." This could be one issue. Which kernal? Have not tried to flash any kernals yet. Still reading.

Which part did you have a problem with. I have resolved the CWM issue and the errors I was getting in recovery.

you should youtube a tutorial on how to do this... it will take 10 minutes to explain how to do it all and it would be easier than going back and forth through forum messages. google can be your friend also if you just use it. if you eff it up too bad you can always put your phone back into dl mode and odin it back to stock.

True, Google can be you're best friend but at the same time, I was able to find a detailed fix right on the forum. After another hour or so of searches. Just installed my second ROM yesterday and running great. Chose the Dragon ROM for the Captivate. It's Great!! and I happen to be a fan of Dragons!

i found that rom manager does not work for certain phones, period. i use odin and flash cwm 2.5.1 to my phone while in download mode. then i can use the 3 button combo to get into cwm,oh yeah and dont forget to back up your rom version once in cwm! i then wipe cache (user data) and delvic cache and batt stats. then i go into a folder i created on "root" (which i made on the sd card) i store my roms/kernels themes ect...in this folder i pick which rom to install "please do your homework" make sure u know which rom ect, is right for your phone, or u will have a nice shinny paperweight!!!
ok so, now your in your folder with the rom of choice, flash install from .zip let it install.......takes awhile just be patient. thats about all i can say. took me awhile but its well worth it, i have a way better understanding about everything now. hope it helps, i own the mesmerise and found rom manager is useless for this type of application so ditch it!

Need to reinstall stock rom(maybe flashing a custom one)

Hello all,
I am running stock rom rooted, version .5.
Due to some FCs happening I want to reinstall the stock rom.
How should I do it?
I don't really remember..
My phone was unbranded when I bought it.
Just running the RUU of the latest stock rom will do the work?
Or do I have to unroot it firstly?
Also, I have created a partition (ext3 - 512MB) at my sd (8GB - Class 6)..and I would like to be able to install apps there...I think it's called A2SD..
How can I do that?
I am taking a backup with TB and will backup contacts and anything else I need.
Should I take a nandroid backup too?
Additionally, in order to decide which rom would be better for me, is there any way to try custom roms, such as running a virtual android device at my pc?

To use the A2SD+, you need to be rooted.
So you can either run a RUU (unroots your phone - then root it again) or search the Android developement for stock rooted ROMs with A2SD+.
If you choose the 2nd one, just boot into recovery wipe everything and then flash the ROM and then restore everything with Titanium.

To start with, I haven't flashed through recovery any rom yet and haven't wiped data, and thus I am really inexperienced with these.
So I could download this ->"2.29.405.2/5 INIT.D ROM v3.0 | v3.1 - NEW!"? (The version .5) with init.d so that I can install the script of A2SD+ ("A2SD+ (1.4) - v3 compatible", right?
Do I have to flash a radio too?
I think I've read here somewhere that if the radio you're having is working properly then stick with it..If I wipe everything will I still have to install a radio?
So if I download this version what are the steps that I should follow?
1)Backup everything I need with TB and nandroid.
2)Copy the file into the root of sd.
3)Boot into recovery.
4)Wipe everything->wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition?
5)And then which option is to flash the rom? The "install zip from sdcard"?
After this procedure what else do I have to keep in mind?

Yes, that's the ROM, and you will be able to use A2SD+ with the init.d ROM.
Radio is not needed. Even if you wipe everything, it remains, because it is on a different partition. So wiping everything is safe, radio remains.
The steps are good, but before flashing ("install zip from SD Card") make sure you toggle verification off (it's in the same menu) - just in case.
Altough I strongly recommend to run through those custom ROMs, you'll not regret it (If you choose a stable one from a well known dev).
Yeah, the virtual android emulator. Wanted to write about it, but forgot it after searching for the ROM I Know it is possible, never tried it.

I have flashed the one with the init.d..but into Settings > data I can only see as internal memory 120+MB...
TB though shows the free data on the sd extern..
How can I be sure what is correct? :S
Also I tried leedroid and cyanogen mod for a little..but leedroid was partially tranlsated to greek and cyanogen mod does not have sense which I seem to have got used to it..
Also, about the emulation..I was stuck at a part where I have to create a system.img file of the rom...:S

1. try to do the three wipes.. wipe factory settings, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and then reboot. perhaps you won't have fc's after that.
2. if you run a stock ruu again - you will lose root and s-on will return. this is the way to unroot essentially. check unlockr for details on that. you can use a universal ruu from htc to do that if you have to. but if you try 1. first, then you won't have to do this. i would suggest NOT unrooting just for a few fc's.
you will solve the problem by installing a different rom. now onto that issue about app2sd...
if you want app2sd.. i would suggest looking into data2sd. i'm on rcmix-hd or rcmix-s-w.1.1 and it's very nice. if you want to use data2sd you can also add this feature. pm me about that. one proviso, your sd-card must be a class-6 or higher to really enjoy data2sd ... i have a class-4 and the speed is not bad. but as the card becomes fragmented, i am sure the speed will suffer.

I have done the 2 wipes except the dalvik cache before installing the rom.
I haven't used a stock RUU.
I have downloaded the v3 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997 with init.d support.
I will stick with app2sd because I read that the sd wears off with all that writing :S
About the roms:
Yesterday I checked Leedroid but the thing that I didn't like was the partial localization..
I am using greek language.
Is there any way to solve that?
Also which other roms are more stable and worth the try?

This means that I can flash any notification bar icon I want and also the super cicle battery mod?

With a deodexed rom you can apply global themes, fonts and mods.
With an odexed rom this is not possible, unless the mod is appropriately altered.

[Q] How to mod ARHD Rom (how to install roms?)

I am new to rooting so I dont know how to install mods on a Rom . I have ARHD 6.3.1 . Already downloaded required mods just wanna know how to install them . Thanks in advance.

Most mods are designed to be flashed in Recovery, just like the ROM itself.
It's a good idea to backup the ROM in recovery first, as there's no "uninstall" option for these mods. So if you decide you don't want the mod, you can restore your backup to get everything back to the way it was before you flashed it.

Depending on what mods you've downloaded, most of them are usually just flashable .zips, just like the ROM itself. So you simply install them by rebooting to recovery and flashing the .zip files you've downloaded and then rebooting afterwards.

I have downloaded CRT mod , advanced power manager mod , honeycomb icons + % battery mod , beats audio(music box) mod . should i just flash them from recovery just like i flashed rom . Thanks

There's a fairly easy way to check for yourself if a ZIP file is meant to be flashed in Recovery, like a ROM.
Just open the zip file (don't extract it, just open it in your favourite ZIP program). Have a look inside and if you can see a folder called "META-INF" then you know it's a flashable ZIP file.
See the attached screenshot for an example. There might be lots of other folders inside the zip (system, data), but as long as there is one called "META-INF" then you know you can flash it in Recovery.

[Q] bootloader unlocked + rooted but still can't install any rom in any way

after a big battle with my HTC Wildfire S,
i was able to unlock the bootloader than root the phone,
but i'm not able to flash any new rom,
i tried all the below:
1- using the RUU: it stops after checking the signature and give ERROR 155
2- using the rom.zip file (that i copy it from temp folder when RUU is started), the file doesn't open
3- i extracted the rom.zip with 7zip then rezipped, now it's opening but it's not being installed

Installation aborted
i tried also to rename the file to PG76IMG.zip but i also got an error...
N.B: i'm using more than one image, and same result with all
i've been working on that for more than 3 days, pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase help

Do you have CWM installed? If not, install it first (you can find an auto-installer that worked great for me here: http://www.mediafire.com/?b0bsb4ms4lo714b (it's from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431969))
Then boot into your recovery (which would then be CWM), do a backup first, then do a factory reset, wipe your cache, then go into Advanced and wipe your Dalvik cache. Then go back to the menu, select "Install zip from SD card", select the .zip file of the mod you're trying to install and finally install it. Once that's done, reboot, and the mod should be installed.
I hope you were able to follow that. If not, I'll gladly explain further. If you were able to follow this and it worked, then click the Thanks button down below for me please .
EDIT: I forgot to say, before you boot into your recovery, make sure the .zip file is on the root of your SD card and isn't called PG76IMG.zip, else your HBOOT will think it's an update to the HBOOT / Recovery / whatever, try to install it and obviously fail, leaving you with only one option: reboot (into Android).

You maybe use recovery to flash any rom but official rom.

i use rom manager make sure to click delete delvk +cache quick and easy you can even make a nandroid backup on the ui

I think I know what's wrong. The zip you have is extracted from the HTCDEV RUU. Find a RUU from the ROM collection, extract the zip, put it on the root, boot CWM, wipe cache, system, Dalvik, then flash the ROM from the SD card. Taa Daa!

LOL. I watched The Matrix Revolutions last night! And reloaded last week!
Anyway, if you want a stock ROM, follow my instructions, but if you want a custom ROM, follow my instructions again but this time don't use the zip from the stock ROM, use the zip you downloaded. You should probably rename it to update.zip, if it ain't already.
If you want a custom ROM, but want to have one that is mostly stock but has a bit of juice in it, then search for Chocolate & Coffee. I made it. Then when you get fed up, try .sense, or CM7, or something like that!
