I did a thread on this before but on the wrong section here are one of the response I got:

Did that, and got a new G2 replacement with the OTA Update preinstall and I still get the same low scores that I would normally score 300+ higher before the update, I get 1700 @ 1ghz o/c while I would get around 1600-1700 before the update @ 800mhz stock and around 1900s @ 1ghz o/c :s, could it be the tethering and wifi calling capabilities added on the OTA update that slowed the phone down?

There is differing opinions on this, but the popular consensus is that quadrant scores are worthless. They do not reflect real world use at all. There really just good for circle jerking with your friends and saying "Oh my phone is better, no MINE!" . I have actually used roms that got a THOUSAND less in quadrant, yet felt faster and worked better in real world use. So my advice would be dont rely on quadrant so heavily to decide what is the best rom I made that mistake myself.

Well I'm on stock, not using any roms
And than again I don't rely much on quadrant but, the phone is definately slower, it use to be faster before the update. I strongly believe is the update that slowed the phone down, many people have also notice this.

Has anyone figured out how to juice up the radio? Much like overclocking the CPU, but with the radio to improve up and down signal.
Willing to run any experimental programming on my phone if anyone has something to try out.

Haven't ever seen anything like that, no.

You could always try the other released radios. The 11.xx has been scoring some pretty "oh my goodness, how fast can I uninstall this thing" ratings, but the 9.xx may do you some good. On all radios, YMMV; and be VERY VERY careful when flashing.
When it bricked it was stuck in an infinite boot loop, then after a few tries, wouldnt go further than hboot. I got lucky and found a way to restore an old rom I saved to my PC with the sdcard. I'm just glad I could still get it to run clockwork recovery.

Interestingly, the 11.x radio increased my battery life about 20% (no major impact on my reception, if anything it seemed to have cost me a dB or two) compared to the 7.x radio. Tried the 9.x for a few days; cost me nearly half my battery life and caused the phone to run above 100F just for surfing the web.
It's DEFINITELY a YMMV situation.

Your phone wasn't even remotely close to being bricked. That would be kind of like saying a dislocated shoulder is total paralysis.
A bricked phone is one that can't do anything at all and is completely unrecoverable. A basic rule of thumb is that if you can get to the bootloader, the phone is in no way bricked.

Last night I installed the NON Rooted version of the leaked Gingerbread Rom.
Everything Seems to works. Signal Reception is way better!!!! I notice it so much more!
Some people said the verizon app kept force closing. Mine did right after install and upgrade. But once I rebooted the phone it never happend again, not once.
Gps works perfectly
Camera perfect
Video perfect
HTC Widgets are now downloadable
SMS /MMS is perfect (before I had some force closes and alot of failed sends, Since install of Gingerbread I havenet had one problem.)
NOT ONE FORCE CLOSE ON ANY APP, this seems like a FINAL BUILD
If you have any questions let me know
Also for twitter lovers the PEEP app by HTC is greatly improved.
I am thinking about flashing it before I get my XTC clip just for ****s and giggles.
There are bugs serious enough in it for verizon to reject it, there is a new build in testing.
I cant find one single bug with it. Ive tried everything. My reception is soooooo much better. In bars and actual call quality. I havent seen one force close in 2 days of use and i have atleast 50 apps installed and tried them all.
Now i cant guarentee its final but boy it does seem so.

I dont mind flashing RUU everytime.
As far as other improvments. Well batery life has always been good for me. I get up to 12 hours of use of the phone before it dies. That is great for a smartphone!! I dont play games but im syncing Twitter and 2 email accounts. all pages full pf widgets nd im not stop texting and streaming rhapsody.
Alot of font changes in the rom. Also when you do a factory reset it gives you the option to format SD again. In all honesty this ROM is perfect IN MY EYES!
Guys if this is a sign of whats to come from HTC were in good hands!!!
oh also I notice NO SLOW DOWN or stuttering EVEN WITH LIVE WALLPAPER ON......
Now i prefer sense ...but i can only imagine how much better this phone will be when the devs start dropping some sweet roms!
That is assuming a RUU is available for each update, it isn't always available.

jcase you obviously have alot of experience here,
what is the likelihood that we won't see an official gb ruu? it seems highly ulikely to me that htc wouldn't put it out, or someone couldn't get it out
i'm also in phone limbo till the clip arrives, but flashing ruu to ruu isn't the end of the world as it's been made out to be.

Since they're for your parents, I would leave them as is, stock. Chances are, they're never going to understand or utilize the phone's full potential. Unless you plan on always being available to immediately troubleshoot any and all errors/issues that might/will pop up with a custom ROM, stock is the way to go. Even stock blows away other phones available.

If this is there 1st foray into Android, leave it stock. The worst thing you can do is have a custom ROM on it, then have it do some weird stuff, and they are up a creek when they go to the store to have them fix it.
If they want to mod the phone and mess with it, let them make the choice and let them learn to do it.
You could at least root and debloat the phones.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I wouldn't do anything to them, this phone is good stock. The last thing you need is them accidentally going to recovery and messing with something they shouldn't.
That's the best thing to do IMO.

I vote for stock as well. I am still on stock (rooted and bloat-frozen) and it works well for me. If we had MIUI, then I would recommend that because your parents could easily cusome the look of their phones to their hearts' content without alot of knowledge and without great risk.

Same here. My last phone (LG P500), which has now gone to my wife, is rooted and I like to stay tuned to developments for it as well. I expect that I'll root once I get 4.1 for my T989D (assuming it comes), then see what custom ROMs can offer beyond that. I've been reading these forums for over a month now to learn the procedures and of potential pitfalls so I don't wreck my phone when the time comes.
This phone is quite a step up from the P500, so I'm pretty happy without root for the time being.

I'm guessing by this statement, that you are a young teenager. I am an Android user and have been for quite a while. I honestly prefer to live my life and not have to tweak a phone's core OS for it to work right. It should work correctly right out of the box. Having to reset my phone several times a day or deal with bloatware is not fun. The nature of Android OS to begin with requires de-bloat/hacking.
Anyway like I said this is coming from a SGS2 user and former iPhone user as well. Only reason I don't go back is iPhones are still physically small for my liking. That and I'm on contract with T-Mobile and live in a building with poor reception (need WiFi calling)
Bought the phone ... rooted it in less than an hour xD. But, after browsing through some roms, I am in stock now just because everything works. However, I do run some rooted apps that come in handy at times.
Battery
I wanted something close to stock, so I went infamous 3.0 and it's just as stable, but the battery life is so much better than stock ICS. Would never go back.
I think its insane to deal with bloatware. Its androids biggest flaw. And theaon reason I root.

Alternate method to enter recovery?
Does anyone know of a way to enter recovery other than with using the power button? Is there a way to do it through ODIN?
I installed ICS Stock ROM, but I need to be able to enter recovery to do a factory reset.
My power button is broken. I can get into download mode (pressing volume up, volume down, and then inserting usb cable).
If the phone is off, I can also get the phone to power on (by inserting power cord, feeling vibrate, and then quickly removing power cord).
But I can't get into recovery. If anyone has any creative methods, that'd be awesome!
I'm saying goodbye, as well.
After installing ROM after ROM, I never found any that "just worked". Anything 4.4-based had all kinds of busted stuff (1080p video, Netflix, etc). 4.3 had camera/gallery issues. Even with 4.1 and 4.2 (including 4.1 stock), they still seem to suffer from "vbus_present" issues forcing me to reboot any time I unplug the device.
The device froze up on me and corrupted too many photos. I tried asking the community what the "best" ROM was, and mods closed the thread.
I wanted the T989 as a tool. Not something I had to babysit.
Maybe I'll get a Moto G or whatever Motorola's new phone is.

The way I see it....ROMs made of 4.2.2 and higher may have their odd glitches... But that just life bringing android versions to phones who's official support ended. Its either accept the odd problem, or stick with last official update. In this case touch wiz 4.1.2. Which is pretty much perfect.
Flashing custom ROMs comes with the odd glitch, no matter the phone. That's just how it is.
Stock is for those that can't accept the odd issue.
Good luck with your next phone!! The moto g is nice, for its price for sure!!!

A point I should have made.....the devs work hard and for free and for fun....and share with us lucky members.
They do their best with what they have to work with....especially on android versions not even created for our device.
They deserve our respect and thanks. If what's available disappoints anyone....they should keep it to themselves or choose their words wisely.
Without the devs.... We'd have nothing at all. Especially when Google stops giving us official updates.
Be grateful.
Still loving my Herc. Carbon rom with SaberMod Uber kernel and I have no complaints...

Current T989 kitkat bugs piss me off, lol. They seem to be putting finishing touches on it, then all of a sudden they make a bigger change that opens a whole new can of worms.
My power button got stuck several months ago, so I actually opened the phone up and removed the entire thing. To turn my phone on, I plug it in with a usb chord and hold volume up/down until I enter download mode, then I cancel it.
I use an app called Quick Boot to reboot, enter recovery and so on.
Also, I kind of agree with you guys. Sure, the latest 4.4 ROMs are a little buggy, but I've found 4.3 roms to be perfect, in terms of stability.
Got my T989 last november from a friend, second android device I had but the first to get serious with. Also tried to check for newer devices like that LG G2 but the chance for me to get a new one is far less than you can do.

I lucked out. I complained enough to tmobile about the screen blobs and lines from the amoled displays that they kept sending me as refurbs, wrote the CEO an email, then they called and agreed to send me a GS3 LTE, and let me keep my s2, so I immediately sold both phones and got the g2 new.
