ROM, what changes does it makes on my SD card? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I install a ROM ex. MIUI 1.5.6 X-part, what changes does it makes on my SD card? Will there be problems adding another rom after that? Do I need to reformat / partition on my SD card if I should go to a different ROM with a2sd+?
Another question:
If I made a backup of everything in recovery and want to restore do I have to wipe everything before restoration?

The rom won't make any changes to your sd card. however you wil need to format the card for the a2sd because you will need to create an ext3/ext4 partition(use rom manager or some kind of partitioning tool for pc eg: MiniTool Partition Magic Home Edition (free). no problems should be encountered if you want to add other ROM's after that as long as you wipe before, usually Chefs tell you what to do before flashing their rom.
For the 2nd question, no, you dont need to format if you want to restore a backed up rom

Undo A2SD

Hi,
Does anyone know how to undo A2SD? ie move all the apps back to the internal memory then remove the ext3 partitions from my memory card?
I'm running a rooted 2.73 ROM with RA-HERO-v1.2.2 recovery image and a vista computer
cheers
I'd also be interested in this, I often get a message saying something like 'sd card maybe not inserted or full' (cant remember the exact msg atm) which I think may be related to apps2sd. Couldn't find any info on the message though.
I'd solve it like this:
Step 1: Format SD card (thus also wiping all partitions)
Step 2: Wipe and re-install any rom - to avoid problems with dependencies from your old setup running with A2SD.
but then you lose all your apps!
He wants first to put his apps back on his phone and then he will format SD card.
But how? I want to know that also
1- Backup your apps using AppManager.
2- Copy the FAT32 partition content to your PC.
3- Format your SD card entirely to FAT32 erasing the EXT3 and SWAP partition.
4- Copy contents back to your SD card.
5- Install AppManager.
6- Restore Your Apps.

Install the MCR3.1 with A2SD+ on a rooted Desire but on a new SDCARD

Hello guys, i have a question, some may call it noob some may thought it themselves. i am currently rooted and using mcr3.1 without problems at all but i don't have the apps2sd.
i want to try it and i baked a new rom from the kitchen with the a2sd+ option integrated but i don't want to mess up my current sdcard and want to use another one i have. can i do that ???
as i see it i must do the following:
1) while my CurrentCard is inserted make a nandroid from the fake-flash recovery
2) turn off the phone and insert the new card
3) put the update.zip (for fake-flash) and the baked rom onto the sd card
4) now go into recovery (fake-flash) and choose to install new rom
will this work ok ?????
in addition as i see on my SDCARD some applications like titanium backup or astro or htc mail, rom manager, wifi tether etc have some files on it into their respective folders. will i be ok if i copy-paste them after the procedure into their folders in the fat partition???? or the a2sd+ uses some other m,ethod for the apps to store their info ????
THANKS for all the help
That should be fine...just don't forget to partition the new sd card for a2sd
do i need to make it with gparted or the rom makes it by default ???
The recovery image has it all. Look!
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
yeah i haven't taken a look into the recovery before...is there any update.zip that adds the a2sd+ to my current configuration ????
No because it's already part of the rom. Your sd just needs partitioning correctly.
Back up your sd card, boot into recovery. Go to partition menu and partition sd card.
Mine is swap 0, ext 512, fat remaining space. Then you can copy your sd backup back to the fat32 partition.
That's it all apps will install to sd card.

Desire doesnt load while inserting a new sd card

Hi,
I bought a new 16Gb microsd hc card after installing the RCMixHD rom in order to give it a 2gb ext size.
Right now im using 8gb-512 ext3 goldcard.
Unfortunately when i put the 16gb in the device (after fat32 quick format)- the device doesnt load
Its HBOOT driver is recognized by windows but i cant get the device to load.
Any ideas?
Many thanks ahead.
rcmix installs part of the rom on the ext partition of sd card that is why the phone wont boot.
1. use a card reader to format your new card and copy the backup of your old card onto the new one (dont forget the rom which you wish to flash again, i suppose rcmix)
2. turn off your phone place in the new card
3. go into hboot, wipe everything and flash the rom
your rom should be working now with your new sd card
(Using this method will cause that you loose all the data that was previously on the phone, but personally i feel: New Card --> New Start and clean flash, that way you can ensure everything is working properly!)

Thanks a lot!
I have a feeling this might work
by the way- in which part should i create the ext partition?
before flashing the rom i guess?
and with which recovery could i make this partition to 2gb size?
Thanks again!

Or..
You can make a Nandroid backup with your old card inside, then partition the newcard with one Fat32 and one ext3 (for A2SD+), copy the folder "Clockworkmod" from the old card to new one, Insert new card, Goto Recovery, Nandroid restore all..
Should work.
Before doing this, make a Titanium backup too..

yes partition before you flash the rom.
And to create the ext partition with the correct size:
You can use amonra to create the ext, clockworkmod 2.1.5.2 (or something one of the newer versions can also do this) --> these work from recovery
I used gParted (a bootable cd, is very useful), you could use fdisk too! With these tools create the ext partition after the fat32 partition otherwise windows will want to format the sd card. (I guess depends on what OS you are using) --> i would use one of these 2 as you have more control over the process

we need help very fast, please help!!!!
thanks a lot
I have these backed up on my SD card & PC too. But I'm afraid it has some private stuff also backed up.
I reccomend you installing a stock rom again and root it (installing a stock rom unroots your phone).
Like in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=918939 Be sure you use the latest ROM and read the full thread!
Also why don't you try another rom, see if it works? ANd make sure you wipe all data (factory/cache dalvik)
how we should install that when we can go only into recovery mod, we can go to sd card but the link you give to us, there is only a rom with is a exe.
can you give us a deteiled introduction? we aren't so good in these things :S pleaase help.
edit2: we can't start the phone so we can't chose htc sync...

If you can't start the phone, then search the forum here for solution...
the problem is, we dont have android on the phone now, no datas nothing, we can pnly good to recovery mod...
we need to install a backup or something from recovery that we have a system on our phone....
so we should need help! ((((((((
edit:
an idea nagypapi :
maybe you can backup you data now, then wipe all your data and flash a completly new rom, then you can make a backup from the completly new rom and than you can give us the backup files bacause these data are without you personal information, thats the one chance ,,,please.....
Download leedroid noA2sd, boot in to recovery, mount the sd, copy the rom to the sd, unmount and flash the rom. You can use a other rom than leedroid if you want but for now just use it.

A possible solution here in post no.7:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/6433-solved-messed-up-partitions-on-internal-storage/
Also I can do the thing you suggested to create the files , but since now I am not at home upload would take forever...
Also try first installing the NOA2SD LeeDroid rom.
+ What Rom You want to install? Does it need an ext 2/3/4 partition, maybe that's the cause, also make sure your SD is formatted to FAT32.
Yes I think its the fat, I try it home later.
The main problem was that we can't mount the SD could. Not mounted in the recovery ... I say it already at the top...

Yeah, you must make an ext partition on the FAT32 SD card, and it should work.
Can I make that with ubuntu?
Ok then I have two partitions on the sdcart (4gb).
On which partition should I have all my folders?
On which partition should I have my zip data (rom) ?
;D you make me hope

Your error is related to a missing ext partition, since the phone doesn't boot i assume you tried to install a sense HD rom. What it said a the top is mounting the ext partition failed, I'm talking about mounting the normal fat partition as mass storing to copy the rom onto the sd card. If that also does not work, take out the sd card put it in a card reader and copy the rom on to it, the put sd back and flash leedroid. This will give you a booting device.
If you want to make and use a ext partition make sure you first have the fat and then the ext3, all files should be on the fat partition and there is no need to do anything else to the ext partition.

I suggest using GParted for that or anything that works in Ubuntu.
If you have another Android device (i bet you have ) you can dowload ROM manager form the Market and use that to create partitions / format card (it is easier).
"Partitioning your SD Card ready for A2SD+
* Backup all data on you SD card (this will be wiped)
* The card should be formatted with your standard FAT32 partition 1st followed by an EXT2/3/4 partition
* Linux users use GParted or a similar software.
* For everyone else I would recommend using Rom Manager
* Once you have downloaded ROM manager from the market, open the app and click partition SD Card, Select your EXT size (512MB or 1024MB recommended) and set 0mb for swap
* Restore your data to your SD and the job is done."

[Q] RCMixHD 2 ASOP Rom

Hey guys,
I'm a pro when it comes to phone hacking but I somehow managed to flash the RCMixHD Rom. I remembered that there quite some steps involved (partitioning sd and whatnot). But since this Rom is not being developed any further (and because I just want something new), I'd like to go back to an AOSP Rom like Cyanogen.
But since there were so many steps involved in flashing RCMixHD, I really don't know how to reverse all this.
I would really appreciate if you could help out a noob.
Thx,
Kalle
just do a nandroid backup, then wipe everything (data/factory reset, cache, dalvik) before flashing the rom...
maybe update your radio
How about the partitioned sd? At which point should I do that?
Download Gparted, and use it to repartition your sd card before you flash your new rom.
Remember to copy your nandroid backup to your pc before using gparted, as partitioning your sd will delete its contents... And to install a completely different rom I would advise making a wipe system (or format system, depend on your recovery)
Tapatalking
As iruiz2 said, copy your nandroid to your pc (after you make afresh one of course) in case something goes wrong. Then repartition your sd card using GParted.
It's recommended to do a first partition of fat32 then a second 1gb partition of ext4 (so if you have a 4gb card, do 3gb as fat32 first, then the remaining 1gb as ext4).
Place the new rom of your choice on the root of your newly partitioned sd card.
Boot into recovery, then wipe everything (factory reset, caches, dalvik cache).
Then install the zip of your new rom.
Reboot.
Enjoy.
A good guide is here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Thanks a lot guys. Will try it tomorrow. Will keep you posted...
Ok, so, my sd is already partitioned with a 1gb ext2 and the rest with fat32. Cos I can't find my usb stick (and since I don't have a disk drive), I can't make a bootable gparted live usb thingy right now. Do I really need to wipe the ext2 partition? Or even format it with ext4?
Thanks!
If it is already partitioned, you dont need to do anything. Just do a data wipe and flash your new rom.
Thanks again guys. Worked like a charm. I'm running Oxygen now.
