I'm fairly new to rooting and flashing, but I can figure things out usually after a bit of research. This has me completely stumped though because I have no idea what to attribute my problem to:
I rooted my Evo a few weeks ago and flashed CM7. The problems I had after flashing CM7 was my GPS and I had 1x instead of 3G. Note: I have also updated my CM7 with the recent updates.
I researched some fixes for the GPS/1x issue, which meant I needed to flash to a sense-based rom. I tried flashing a sense-based rom (several different ones) on several occasions via Clockwork/Rom Manager and I had no luck- it would just reboot to the white screen over and over.
The problem I'd like to resolve in this thread is how to figure out why I am unable to flash to *any* rom. I just attempted flashing KingsRom (via Rom Manager) and everything seemed to be going quite well until the very end where it scrolled so fast I could barely catch what the error was- and it seemed to be something with the "boot image."
Side note: During one of my previous attempts at flashing a different rom, which of course was unsuccessful, I was unable to flash a restore of my CM7 backup and I received this error: "error while flashing to boot image." However after just going at it over and over again I managed to flash a fresh CM7
I'd really appreciate any help as it seems a simple flash is giving me a lot of trouble. If any details about my phone are needed to help resolve this please let me know (I don't know what would be necessary to post).
Try swapping recoveries to Amon Ra. You should be able to do this through Rom Manager. If not you'll have to do it manually.
Reboot into recovery, go ahead and do a backup if you'd like, and then wipe everything in the wipe menu except the SD card. Then try flashing the rom again. If you need more details or if it doesn't work, let me know.

+1 on what Jane said. You can use rom manager to flash RA recovery (alternate recovery) but don't use it for flashing roms. Just wipe like she said and flash the zip manually through RA.

I just tried flashing a friend's Stock rom and this was the error I got:
--------
E: Error finishing BOOT
E: Failure at line 81:
write_raw_image PACKAGE:boot.img BOOT:
Installation aborted.
--------
I am now working on flashing CM7 just to see if that one works. I don't know if the error I received above is relevant to the problem I've been having.
Update on flashing CM7: I tried flashing CM7/Gapps and hit reboot system then it would show an icon, boot into the white HTC screen, then boot back into the recovery mode. Am I not installing CM7 correctly?

Are you wiping fully between installs? It seems like your boot partition may be corrupt... or getting there, if that's possible. Try wiping everything, boot included, and flashing again. The only other thing I can think to do is unroot & go back to stock, then reroot & try again...?

Ok first off new to this business........ Just rooted yesterday. All seemed to go well. i used the simpleroot tool. I'm pretty sure I got full acess since I get the # in a shell.
Anyway here is the issue. new radio, new rom ( I have tried both CM and Fresh) currently have Fresh installed and working. However I have not been able to flash the new wimaxx.
I have tried with both Clockwork and Amon_Ra recovery.
Flash radio - Successful
Flash rom - Successful
Flash wimax - get this error E: Multiple firmware images, E: Can't store zip image, Installation Aborted
Any help here would be appriciated.
The only question I might have is with RA recovery when I tried to wipe the SD ext partition it told me I need to do that with adb.
Thanks

After flashing rom. Reboot. It will then install the RADIO. Radio installation requires one more extra step after flashing. Once thats done. Load into Android. Then go back in recovery then flash the WIMAX.
+1 the above I use Ra and flashed both just fine.
I was trying to flash defrost ROM but after the flash it just stucks at the HTC logo, I leaved it for about an half an hour but no difference. Then I restored my nandroid backup and it worked fine again. Then I tried flashing a few other Roms too, none of them work EXCEPT untouched and just-rooted sense ROMs. I tried both sense and non-sense based ROMs, same result. I've upgraded my radio once to which I think is the latest. I tried restoring an old nandroid backup which was native-htc 2.1 and flashing eclair there didn't help either. I ALWAYS did a full wipe before flashing.
It's an rooted amoled-desire.
What should I do?
Big thanks in advance, zlayaa

Hello! Thanks for the tips, I first did a full wipe. Then I flashed DeLite through Recovery (Power + Rocker Down, then Recovery and Install from Zip in the black-green custom recovery screen). I got this output:

After the flash I went back and hit restart, it completed the radio flashing and rebooted. Then it once again stuck at HTC logo for 20 minutes until I pulled the radio. I tried flashing OpenDesire with the latest Radio and the same result.
I am having the exact same problem. Have tried flashing many roms and radios while wiping before each flash and every one freezes at the white htc screen after reboot. Only thing that works is restoring my original nandroid backup. Any help would be appreciated!

(how long time do you need to wait to be allowed to bump?)
try downloading rom manager from the market and try it that way, could be that your update.zip is screwed
I tried using the flash method in ROM Manager, no difference. I haven't renamed it to update.zip, I've always used flash zip file method in clockwork recovery. Does that make any difference?

Hy all.
I'm experiencing the same kind of problem than yours, EXCEPT for ModacoCustomROMs : I successfully flashed MCR8 and then MCR9 ROM.
But, for any other Custom ROM, I get stuck in the HTC green logo screen, and never come to the animated boot screen, or, in some cases, I come to the animated boot screen, but enter in an infinite boot loop.
I discovered that I have two "bad blocks" in the /data partition, but do not know whether it could come from that (in recovery mode, I mount /data, and then, type the following command
Code:
adb shell dmesg|grep bad
and get the following message
Code:
[xxxxxxx]block 643 is bad
[xxxxxxx]block 727 is bad
I perhaps have also bad blocks in the boot partition, but do not know how to check ...
Hey! Thanks for the tip, I flashed the Modaco ROM and it worked fine! How do I check my system for the bad blocks?
I'm happy now though, I was mainly looking for a ROM which was de-odexed and had some simple mods. But it'd be interesting to know why this is happening!
EDIT: I missed that you described the commands, I'll try it and tell you the output
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I've now checked the phone with the command and I got no output, so I guess I don't have any bad blocks.
I've tried to flash MiUI but it failed too! I'd really like to get this to work so I'd appreciate all help, big as small; and because I'm fairly new to android so I'm not sure what info I should provide either, I understand that it can be very hard for you guys to debug this.
Thanks in advance. Zlayaa
Edit: I saw an option in ROM Manager, Fix permissions, and i tried it. After that I flashed miui and it worked!

This might work for all of you
This is if you still want to run on Defrost.
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
EDIT: YOU MUST BE ABLE TO BOOT GO TO THE BOOTLOADER MENU.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Run the win-down.bat file.
Follow on screen instructions.
After the process is completed, Head to the root of your SD card and check if there is a file named P99***IMG (FORGOT THE EXACT NAME BUT IT SHOULD BE SOMETHING LIKE THIS) there should be one.
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off.
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck
Big thanks! This seems to have fixed my problems!
Alright, so last night I saw that the CM nightly build had been working for others so I decided to try it. I wiped and flashed but got a boot loop. I went back to recovery to try to wipe and reflash but the flash failed halfway through. I go to hboot and see that I'm back to S-ON... So now I'm stuck with a phone that won't boot, won't let me flash a rom in recovery, and won't even let me install the stock rom with hboot. I spent about 4 hours on it last night messing around with fastboot and trying apache14's OTA rollback method but was never able to get it to work. The adb shell won't recognize that I have the edited misc.img on my sd, even with a newly formatted card with no other data. Before anyone states the obvious, I was using the first version of the G2 clockwork mod, and if there was an option for a backup in there, I didn't see it anywhere. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
man i've been trying to help someone in a similar spot for 2 days now. so do u still have a custom recovery on there now?
so hboot recognizes the stock rom? what exactly happens when you try to flash it?
Yeah I managed to get a newer clockwork on here. Turns out a friend of mine just bought a G2 so I'm going to attempt to make a nandroid backup of his and apply it to mine. Think that will work?
It recognizes it, but just says "Main version is older! Update fail!" after it scans the image. I assume that's because I had the ota applied before I flashed the cm rom.

hmm thats a little more info then u gave last time. which rom did u try?
Your odex rom. And I actually tried Paul's rom last night with the same results. I have to go to work right now so there's not much else I can do but I appreciate the help. I'm really banking on the nandroid restore of my friend's g2 backup working but we'll see what happens.
I had this happen to me also. Since you have clockwork recovery installed, you should be able to use the instructions in this post using adb while in recovery mode:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831398
The only change you'll have to make is you need to mount the sdcard in order to follow the instructions.
mount -o rw -t vfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /sdcard
/cache also has available space so you might be able to use that without mounting /sdcard.
Hope this helps!
remember that in his first post he said that the phone has reverted to s-on. you've tried the original unrooted stock ROM? because with s-on I don't think you'll be able to flash any of pre-rooted ROM.
Mine had clockwork installed when I tried to install the signed ship rom in order to revert back to stock so I was s-on also. It appears that mmcblk0p17 was not WP in clockwork recover in my case, so I was able to dd the modified image to that partition through adb and then the shipped rom was able to flash normally.
Thank you again for all your help guys, but the nandroid backup worked. Though I am stuck on baconbits and my wifi card is not working at the moment all I need to do is follow the unroot instructions and i'll be fine. I hope...

Hi all. I am a noob at this rooting and flashing business, and I probably did something stupid so bear with me.
The other night I rooted my Evo with Unrevoked. That same night I flashed Baked Snack 1.9 using ROM Manager. Prior to the flash, I backed up my phone using ROM Manager. It was fast and everything but I decided I wanted Gingerbread (a la Salvagemod). I backed up my phone in a similar fashion, and flashed the ROM once using ROM Manager. When rebooting, my phone became caught in a boot loop. After searching through Google for a few minutes, I learned that I simply needed to clear my cache and my dalvik cache. After clearing cache, flashing, and attempting to boot several times (all in clockworkmod... or recovery... or whatever it is called (yeah i suck)...or whichever one is orange!), I gave up and decided to restore to my second ROM Manager backup - that of Baked Snack. Error! "No files found!" I tried my previous backup. Same message.
Looking back on that, I chose "install zip from sdcard" instead of "nandroid". That was a fail.
So I decided to re-use unrevoked. Everything went fine on the PC end, but the only thing that changed on my phone, is that when it boots, it gets stuck on "htc evo" in the white screen. That and clockworkmod is now teal. I disovered the nandroid option on the recovery menu. I navigate to that, then to restore, then to my Baked Snack backup. This gave me the message "Error while flashing boot image". I tried it one more time, except instead of picking recover, I accidentally picked backup (stupid stupid careless, i know). It failed and said "Can't mount /data/!".
Then I decided to go onto xda-developers and here I am now. If you are through facepalming, I would appreciate it if anybody could help me recover my data. I believe I can still flash a completely new ROM (But what do I know? I haven't proven to be the smartest Android guy), and I don't know about you guys, but I like keeping my data.
So, uh, yeah. That's that. Help please.
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your phone. It looks like you still have a nandroid backup, unless you formated your SDcard. Clear data, dalvik cache, and cache then run do a restore. When using clockworks recovery clear out the data, dalvik, and cache three times.
Hope this helps.
I have performed all three wipes. After that it reads
Code:
Checking MD5 sums...
Erasing boot before restore...
Restoring boot image...
Error while flashing boot image!
Same as before... Any thoughts? Could the boot.img file be corrupted?
***bump***
Edit: Ive read around some more and heard 2 things. 1) If I just try recovering over and over again, nandroid will eventually give in. 2) the battery has to be 70% or higher or nandroid will just keep giving error messages.
Either way, I'll juice up my battery and report back later.
Have you tried to just do a wipe and reflash the ROM.
Have you tried to use Amon recovery? That seems to work better than clockworks. You can get that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026

Yes. I tried it again just now because I was feeling lucky. Salvage Mod went smoothly, except it got stuck on the white htc screen when I rebooted. Baked Snack gave me an error message:

I'll try that tomorrow morning. Right now I'm gonna get some sleep before I do any more damage to my phone lol. Expect more questions from me about WiMAX and what to do with that .img file (if anything at all).

And as to Amon_RA, because I'm doing "the bootloader way", then I don't need the recovery-RA-supersonic-v2.3.img file?
When I try to recover, it givese me an error saying that the nandroid directory could not be found. I have my backups in a folder called /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/NameOfTheRecoveryFolder/. Should I just copy the files in the backup folder to a folder on the root of the card called "nandroid"?

Yep...just need the PC36IMG.zip and boot to the bootloader.
Since you got your phone last December I think you need to run a rom that is based off the latest code. If you are running htc sense it should be based off 3.70.651.1. For ASOP run the lastest ones.
Here is a nice wiki of the ROMs for the EVO http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs
Forgot to mention for the zip files you place on your sdcard for flashing check the MD5 hash before flashing your phone.
When I got my EVO the SD card went bad in about 2 months. Fortunately for me Sprint was nice enough to replace my sdcard. Since, then I have upgraded my sdcard to a 32GB sandisk.

This would be the file called "nandroid.md5"? I'm confused.
OK so I boot into recovery, go to Nandroid restore > BackupName
I am presented with a list of options:
boot.img
recovery.img
wimax.HT0CRHL08393.img
system.img
data.img
cache.img
nandroid.md5
Do I just run each of these individually or am I doin it wrong?
Don't do a nandroid restore. Flash a ROM onto your phone.Fresh EVO or Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo are good ones to try.
Works great! I lost all my data but I'd rather have a wiped phone than a dead one!
Thanks!
When you used Unrevoked to root your phone it also downloaded Clockwork Mod recovery v. 2.6.0.1. This is what you probably used to do your original backup right after you rooted your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895208). You need to go back to this version so you can restore any backups you may have made right after you rooted your phone. Here is an article by Koush explaining why you may be having problems. At the bottom he has v.2.6.0.1. Install it on your phone and then proceed restoring your backup.
Also, I'm going to suggest to you that you read the articles below to get you familiar with rooting, and then I suggest you read some more on these and other forums. Learn the rooting vocabulary and processes involved (rooting, nandroid backup, recoveries, flashing ROMs, kernels, etc.). Also, try and read up on problems people have rooting, flashing ROMs, and troubleshooting should something go wrong. You want to be able to get yourself out of a mess should problems arise. Most importantly, you want to know what you're doing so you don't brick your phone.

Sounds like you didn't get your recovery from the Verizon HTC One Original Development forum.
Instead you installed one for the gsm m7.
Maybe this is not the case, I don't know.
If it is, then try again after flashing a proper recovery for m7vzw.

I just have the weird problem of the graphics sorta are delayed sometimes. Other than that works fine. could be the selinux crap.

make sure you have a good download check MD5 if available... also when you try to open the .zip in your computer should open and if it gives you an error than you have a bad download.. try redownloading. make sure you get the TWRP for the right phone.
