This thread is now useless because from CM 7.1.0 we can now disable camera shutter sound in settings:
Settings -> CyanogenMod settings -> Sound -> Mute camera shutter
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just a small mod for turning off the camera click and video record sounds, it was driving me crazy.
I made small OGGs with no sound, the update overwrites them.
Tested on SGS I9000 and HTC Desire, also tested on CWM 3.x and 2.x.
SGS was running cm7 nightly 0509, and desire cm7 7.0.3.
Should work on all CM7 branches.
great work mate.
one question, can you turn off sound of auto focus too?
best regards
any chance for a howto?
cm is currently in nightly state so future changes in camera are possible.
Can't you just put your phone on vibrate?

Sorry guys was away for a while. Just flash it with Clockworkmod.
You will have to reflash the mod after every update.
Simple - just "install zip from sdcard" - "choose zip from sdcard" choose your file and reboot.

I do not have any sound for autofocus. When I take photos with my i9000 theres only camera shooter sound. With this mod the camera is totally silent.
This goes for CyanogenMod 7, on any device not just i9000.

Delete this file camera_focus.ogg
Navigate with the CM integrated file browser to the directory /system/media/audio/ui (root required)

I can't believe this isn't an option. I was trying to take some picture of a textbook in a very quiet environment and that damn shutter sound was disturbing everyone. How could they not have a option for this?!
Serious fail
Root and flash a custom rom, or just the audio tweak in the dev. section.
But I agree Samsung fail on that and the stupid increase ringtone bs.

It isn't a fail, it is to avoid legal issues. In some areas it is illegal to shut off the shutter sound on a phone/camera. AOKP allows you to shut off the sound, but will give a warning that it is not legal in all areas.
yup above is right
And if ur rooted go to system/media/audio/ui and delete anything with the word camera in it. May also be called shutter_sound I think. Problem solved

I wouldn't just delete the sound but replace with a silent .ogg file because the system still searches for the file. If your rooted with cwm look in post #3 of my wicked thread and I have a flashabe zip to silence just the shutter sounds and another to silence all camera and camcorder sounds. Just download the file and flash in recovery and it replaces the files with silent files. That should work on any custom deodexed rom.
Here is a link to the thread and its in post #3.

I nt sure it is applicable to other country roms version..
In Msia Rom version, u could turn off ur shutter sound by putting it into silent mode before u opening the camera.
This is wat i did often when went to quiet environment such as library.
U could try this solution see it works or not.

Might be a silly questions - but I can't find the option to shut the camera up, for it not to make that annoying shutter sound. Do you have any idea how to disable it?
Thanks.

Yes. This isn't a flashable zip by the way. It contains a file that you replace the original with... The file is default_gain.conf (found in system/etc)
Backup the original first.
Or do what TML1504 suggested. That's what I usually do.

Or, to make it the cleanest possible:
Under /system/csc, there is a feature.xml file.
Edit it, and under the <!-- Camera --> section, add the following line:
Code:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
And you will have an option in the Camera settings to disable the shutter sound.

Same here, awesome!
Unbelievable! My hubby's 6 year old feature phone has a camera that you can't turn off the stupid sound.
I am stunned that on the Note 2, you must first mute your phone, then open the camera app, then hope your subject is still standing there waiting for the shot. Or I have the option of rooting my phone.
I don't know why, but this just pisses me off! :silly:
Hello guys :victory:
Is there a way to turn-off the camera sound when we took pictures on our SGA2? (GT-I8160) without setting the phone to Silent?
I cant find an option from the Camera app...
I saw a thread here that needs busybux and a little commands, is there another way to disable the camera sound?
Thanks for your inputs...
here is camer sound patch i made http://d-h.st/Aa2
- Type "su" and give root permissions;
- Type "camerasoundoff" for disable camera capture sound;
- Type "camerasoundon" for enable;
Rename following files in system/media/audio/ui with any root explorer (Solid Explorer i.e.):
Cam_Start.ogg
Cam_Stop.ogg
camera_click.ogg
camera_click_short.ogg
Shutter_01.ogg
VideoRecord.ogg
That's what I've done, but I still get a little sound in the standard camera app (not really noticable in my opinion), so I think I missed one file. However, with Camera ZOOM FX, all sounds are gone.
I just put my phone on silent and i do't hear any sound, what do you actually want?

Setting the phone on Silent is not my option though its so easy to do, but that is actually my question;
How can we turn off the Camera sound with setting the phone to silent... Re-read the 1st post please..
What I actually want is; I want to turn off/on the camera sound quick and easy...
Camera app -> Settings (Gear) -> shutter sound -> off

I asked these questions because as what I've said no sound option on camera app...
Root your phone, then add the following line to the end of /system/build.prop:
Code:
ro.camera.sound.forced=0
It will be silent if your phone is in silent mode.

Hi,
I found a way to turn off the shutter sound (by coincidence).
I turned off the 'systemsounds' and noticed that the shuttersound was off.
Settings>sound>volume>system (set to a minimum).
I don't know which other sounds I turned off as well by doing this.
I don't miss a sound yet.
My answer may be a little too late, but maybe I help other people with the same problem.
Greetings
wouter
I tried to disable the camera shutter sound but its not working.
Steps:
- Rooted the device with Odin
- Edited the other.xml <CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
The option is now available in the camera menu but always jumps back to "on"
Any ideas? Thanks :good:

Switch to a custom ROM that makes this simple. That's one sollution.
You can also find that sound file (the CLICK noise is just a sound file like any other sound file) and replace it with a blank sound. I wouldn't delete it outright because it may cause a force close if the camera tries to access the sound file and it's not there.

I renamed the .ogg files to .bak but the autofocus still makes a beep.
Do the gestures still work on a custom rom? Can you recommend me a good rom?

Gestures should work on all TouchWiz roms. They will NOT work on any AOSP ROM.
We do not recomend any ROMs on XDA. It's a big no no here. (Because any such discussion inevitably degrades into a fight over what rom is best, and there is no correct answer to that)
But if you like your rom and just want a little more control stick with TouchWiz (it has a slightly better camera than AOSP roms as the software to control the camera is better, but closed source so it can't be ported to AOSP roms). You'll find that custom TouchWiz variants are very similar to what you have now, but with A LOT more control over the UI.
Just delete the files. Obviously you're rooted so that's easy. Look at ALL the sound files in system/media/ui.
The whole build.prop edit thing is mostly a gimik for a lot of things - as you should already be able to tell from this experience. It's a pointless argument, some people will argue on their death bed that build.prop edits aren't a placebo effect for most things.
Anyway, don't do the .bak rename either. What's the point? You plan on using the click sound again? Wasted space honestly. Delete them, enjoy.

hmm still have that slight crackling sound on vol up and the first keypress on the dialer
playing with it some more, you sure you have NO crackling when volume is all the way up and you press it up?
hmm I might have a solution, I think I fixed the sampling rate in the ROM itself, testing now
