For some reason, I keep losing root privileges. This has happened on 2 roms now. What am I doing wrong??
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Are you using rooted ROMs or stock ROMs?
If the ROM you are flashing is a stock RUU then you will lose root.
Which ROMs are you trying?
How did you obtain root?
Have you got Radio and ENG S-OFF?
What recovery version are you using?
What method are you using to flash the ROMs?
Ive been using RCMix 6.1.0.1 and now Levo 1.3. Haven't had a problem with anything before when I've ran cm7 or froyo roms, or muiu.

I'm using the latest recovery. And have eng off. I haven't had problems until these last couple of weeks. And I've been rooted since December
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
What method are you using to get root back?
And I know it's a daft question but bear with me: What is happening that makes you suspect you are losing root?
I applied full wipe then flashed a new Rom. I thought it was rcmix to begin with but apparently not. Could it be something to do with recovery? All I've done is flash the ril and a different theme.

At the risk of sounding rude, I'm asking these questions for a reason.
I used visionary to root. Had to downgrade originally.
I am using 3.0.2.6 cwm.
I'm not sure what I have done. As I said I've not had problems before whilst using other roms, just 2.3 with sense.
I think I might just revert back to cm7.

Maybeyou'll answer if someone else asks What makes you think you are losing root, and how do you get it back ?

Are you selecting Temp Root only or do you choose Attempt Perm Root as well?
Are you checking the options box to ensure the changes stick after reboot?
And one that's just occurred to me, what makes you think you are losing root?
I'm not sure why this is occuring. I was hoping someone might gave an idea. I have done nothing different this time than in previous occasions.
To get root permissions back, I have to full wipe the phone, using the full wipe zip. I then reflashed a new rom (from rcmix to levo) which then gave me a fully functioning rooted phone again. However, the same issue has now come back.
Permroot was achieved ages a go. I have flashed many custom roms, radios, bootanimations etc. This has only happened in the last week.
When going to setcpu, it says phone does not have root permissions, this is the same in rom manager, gscript lite and titanium backup.

After you flash a new ROM does root disappear randomly a few days later or only the first time you flash the ROM (meaning you have to keep flashing ROMs twice)?
I get all the benefits of rooting back when i flash a rom for the 1st time. The lose it later.
I updated to cwm 3.0.2.8 then went back to 3.0.2.6 because it is the one rom manager recognises. Could this be an issue?

To be honest I have never heard of root just suddenly not working.
Have you got the superuser app installed? Are your running any task killers apps?
Did you use ROM Manager to flash the .2.6 recovery?
There's two versions of those easy-wipe zip things (don't use or like them myself), are you using the full wipe one? If so, to rule it out do the wipes manually in recovery before flashing the ROMs

Recovery was installed via Rom manager. Do you think flashing a new recovery image could help?

Will answer that one after I know above.
I've had this happen a number of times on various ROM's such as Cyanogen, CoreDroid, RCHDMix etc... on each occasion nothing was changed that would have triggered a sudden failure of SU privileges. So, the reasons behind this remain a mystery (possible SU bug during ROM startup maybe that continues with all other restarts after?).
However, to remedy the problem I had to go to recovery menu and performed a wipe/reflash.
Annoying... yes. But as long as you do regular back up's then it's only 15 minutes to perform a full recovery and reinstallation of everything.
So far I've been using CoreDroid v6 since it was released without any issues like this (yet!).
Just to confirm, if you still have the SuperUser app installed, do your authorised apps still appear with a green dot next to them?)..
Superuser is installed and has green dots by those apps in need of such privileges. I don't use task managers.
I check md5 sums before flashing.
I have now fully wiped manually and restored a backup. SU privileges are back. I will not change anything and see if I lose them again or if its just me.
Thanks for all the input

Basically start again. Use ur recovery Ingram to restore, then root ur desire from scratch using visionary++ perm root, then eng-s-off, then Tom manager, flash clock mod, then flash new rom.?
Download terminal emulator from market type such and enter. If it returns # ur set.

try installing it the normal way: via recovery.

I haven't had any problems at all. In fact, for n00berts, I prefer using Clockword. Since a lot of ROMs aren't signed and would not work on the RA.

^This. Probably the best way to do it. Although using ROM Manager worked fine for me every time (except for when trying to install Calkulin's ROM).
If you need help on how to do it manually PM me.
Hey guys, I have the latest ROOT done by Unrevoked3, it has the clockwork mod, and my phone reboots just about ever other minute.
So I talked myself into it, I'm like "Hey why not do a custom rom? Maybe Cyanogen or something?"
So I'm lost. I have no idea what mod to install. I need it to be a .img file, too, because that's what Unrevoked uses.
I don't want the stupid sprint stuff, I just want the cool, brass and glass speedy phone. What do I do?
If you have clockwork recovery just go into it and load the cm6 .zip file?
I couldn't find it on the wiki.
Link to how to "load" ?

easiest way is to buy rom manager premium from the market...you can download and install different roms within the app and if you don't like it you can just download another one, wipe, and install...you don't have to use you're pc atall.
but you have to be on clockwork recovery to be able to use rom manager..
awesome thanks. But I'll lose all my info/apps everytime I load one right?

How do I do a nandroid backup, and wipe data, cache before I use Rom Manager?
nm, I see it's part of the application.
So unrevoked3 does support cm6 now? If so that makes my life ten times easier not having to redo root with simple root

Nope. Nand unlock is still required by cm like it is by many roms. Unrevoked won't get you there.
That's what I thought......i may have mis read the op's first post but wanted to clarify for myself and the op that cm 6 will not work with unrevoked

I was able to do backp using the ROM manager. Yesterday, I am not able to do back up. when it starts the backup of the data, it is not able to do so.
I decided to flash the backup I did with ROM manager last March 2. It restored it with no problem, I thought the issue might be because I installed an app that ROM manager doesn't play well with. But when I did a backup, it still showed the same problem.
How do I fix this?
Did you uninstall rom manager and reinstall it?

I have this issue too, not everyone can do a backup through ROM manager for whatever reason. You'll just have to boot to recovery and do the backup manually.
A greedy dev with skewed priorities (money over functionality) is the problem.....
As others have mentioned, just reboot into recovery and perform the backup and you should have no issues. And stay away from the TOUCH version of the recovery.

I uninstalled and installed again the rom manager, still the same issue.
what I liked with rom manager is that I am able to name the backup.
I can back up thru recovery no problem.
Question:
How can I properly name/rename the backup in recovery?

Hello g1forfun,
why do you say Stay away from touch recovery?
I've always had to do it manually in recovery. Selecting backup from ROM manager will cause my phone to reboot into recovery, but nothing further happens automatically lol. I feel more comfortable doing it myself anyway.

now i understand why you said stay away from touch recovery. I tried it, it is not good at all.
strange I tried to backup with rom manager, it worked!

Ok I'm really irritated right about now. I am unable to flash any custom ROMS on my phone. Actually let me rephrase, I can flash them but many things do not work. I have tried Wicked, FreeGS3 and CapROM. They all have the same issues. Let me explain.
Once the ROM is booted I get odd string of numbers and TXT in the status bar, (goes away, think nothing of it)
Root not avail/accessible by root apps.
Home button does not work
Play store missing
standard Google login prompt at first boot is missing, it never asks me to login
Using CWM 5.8.4.5 Touch Recovery
TMO GS3 Rooted with Odin no trip method
I don't get it. I am i just stuck using stock ROM? If anyone can help I would love you forever.
are you clearing /cache and dalvik-cache before you reboot to the custom rom?

If you mean clearing those after the install (in recovery completes) then no. Basically after the install I just reboot. Obviously clear and reset everything before I install though.

I use TWRP and have no problems.
Do a Factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions.
If that doesn't work, flash stock and reroot and try again.
I use touch recovery 5.8.4.7 and flashed it with adb. I've flashed almost everything. Cyanogenmod and every other ROM. NEVER had a problem with an instalation. Or even lost IMEI. I think people specifically aren't reading over OP's and figuring out what's safest for their devices and end up with these kind of results. Just my input.

Use mskips tool for our phones. It does everything you can image and then some. I have been using his tools since the HD2 and no issues to date.
The odd string of numbers that flashes upon boot in the status bar sounds like it's just identifying your external sd card. Totally normal.
OK so nothing worked. TWRP did the same thing. Tried diff ROM, same thing. I flashed back to 100% stock, unrooted ROM. Wiped the phone in the standard Android recovery. Then I rooted again, installed TWRP and flashed my ROM of choice and voila. Everything works. Problem solved. Thanks all for the inputs.
Alright, so I was running MIUI on my phone, and I decided to check out some other roms. I flashed the All Stars rom, wasn't too fond of it, then I flashed CM10. After flashing CM10, the default android keyboard kept crashing (it would continually pop up saying it has stopped every few seconds or so.) Also, my when I unlock my phone, there is no lock screen. Thirdly, my home button, well, doesn't do anything when I push it.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point, I flashed AOKP and the problems still persist. Any ideas on what I could do? Thanks.

cwm 5.0.2.7
Here's an update, I unrooted my phone, flashed back to stock and everything worked fine, rooted again, still fine. Now whenever I flash a rom, the problem comes up again. The default stock browser isn't working either. Any help on what is going on would be greatly appreciated!
if you're using cwm 5.0.2.7, then you need to use darkside scripts.

If CWM 5.0.2.7 is still not working for you, update to CWM 6.0.x.x or even better try flashing and using the latst TWRP recovery system.
Make sure you do the proper data/cache wipes before flashing the ROM again. Also, flashing the proper Gapps file for the specific ROM may help you fix the issue you are having with the home button and possibly the application issues you are having.
