Help! PB99IMG.zip not loading - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have a problem where I am trying to flash a rom by placing PB99IMG.zip in the root of my SD card and booting into HBOOT.
HBOOT checks for all the standard files but skips the PB99IMG.zip I loaded as if it wasn't there.
Does anyone know why this could be happening?
I tried different zips, ones I downloaded directly from shipped roms and another one I extracted from an RUU. None of them seem to be recognized, they all get ignored.

Which RUU did you get the ZIP from? And have you called it PB99IMG.zip (not .zip.zip)?

The SD card ur using is it a goldcard
The Best Things Come To Those Who Wait

I tried these ones:
RUU_Bravo_Telstra_WWE_1.15.841.14_R4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_123851.exe
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_Telstra_WWE_2.26.841.2_Radio_32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14_release_150162_signed.exe
The later one was downloaded straight from the HTC website, after inserting my IMEI number so it's official.
I also tried to make a gold card but it still didn't work. I am also rooted so I shouldn't need a goldcard anyway?
Does the HBOOT on the phone (currently 0.93) have to be the same version as the HBOOT that the zip is expecting?

Found this somewhere else, xda is being funny at my end else i'd reference it properly and give credit where its due.
You can extract the ROM.zip from any RUU to install via ZIP
Start the RUU and once at the first main screen click Start>Run and type
%temp%
now, find the newest folder and in there will be a ZIP file called Rom - copy this to your desktop and rename it PB99IMG. Now copy this to your SD card and start the phone in HBOOT (turn it on whilst holding volume down). It will find the file and start the update. Just follow the instructions...
It will wipe your phone, though

Hello Yoda,
What you describe is exactly what I did. I renamed the rom.zip file I found in the temp folder to PB99IMG.zip (not ...zip.zip).
I booted into HBOOT but the file just gets ignored. I also installed alpharev custom HBOOT to see if S-OFF would make any difference. It still gets ignored!!
Can anyone help?
If not, is there any way to downgrade HBOOT (say from 0.93 to 0.92) without using PB99IMG.zip?

I had same problem with HBOOT 0.93
You need to downgrade to stock Hboot.
I used this tool :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
Follow the instructions ( my phone was not branded , worked for me without a gold card ) , downgrade , after that unrevoked3 , alpharev = S-off Desire

Hi aditirex,
I tried tool you mentioned. I ran the linux version. Everything looked promising, I got no errors but the downgrade didn't happen. I still have HBOOT 0.93 when I rebooted.
Does anyone else know any ways to downgrade HBOOT without using PG99IMG.zip?
(I even tried to format with FAT32 using a card reader, and then the goldcard tool - still nothing)

Anyone? Please?
I really need to get this done to claim my warranty.
I read in another post that you can flash HBOOT using the android SDK:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
But I'm guessing this is an image saved by a nandroid backup.
Does anyone know if I can obtain the img file from PB99IMG.zip?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667 . Use one that is not froyo . It should revert the phone to default settings .

HTC Desire returning to stock ROM (Vip Croatia)

Does anyone know what is the stock ROM (RUU) for Vip (Vodafone) branded phones bought in Croatia?
Since i can't get HTC sync to recognize my phone (tried dozen of solutions: different USB drivers, installing PDAnet, older/newer versions of Sync, Android SDK... none worked), is there a way to return it to stock ROM using SD card? I have read that i just need to run the RUU, take out *.zip out of the temp folder in Window and put it on phones SD card.
I want to return my HTC Desire to stock ROM so i can receive official OTA updates.
Phone details:
SLCD screen
PVT 4 SHIP S-ON
Erasesize 20000
HBOOT 0.93.0001
model number A8181
Currently it is rooted (by unrEVOked 3.22) and has ClockworkMod 2.5.0.7 installed.
Thank you! / Hvala!
Have you checked shipped-roms.com?
Note: You will need a to find an RUU greater than version 2.0 as you have an SLCD screen. If you flash an RUU lower than this version, you will end up with an SLCD brick.
Thank you for the heads up. I did a lot of google-ing and searching the XDA forum and i am aware of SLCD screen "problems", so that's why i stated it in the phone specs
The latest Vodafone RUU i can see is: "RUU_Bravo_Froyo_Vodafone_UK_2.33.161.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_157522_signed.exe" but i am not sure if Vip Croatia is using those Vodafone UK ROMs or some other ones?

Best thing would be to get the latest Generic WWE RUU - RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release
EDIT: You will also need to create a Gold Card, use the tool in my sig below to do so.
Just to add, you will still receive OTA updates.
After you download the RUU, do the following to carry out the PB99IMG method:
(1) In order to extract the rom.zip from the RUU, run the RUU to the Welcome screen (do not connect the phone at all). While the RUU is running, go to Start > Run, and type in %Temp%.
(2) Look for the rom.zip, copy it to the Desktop, and then rename it to "PB99IMG.zip" (and not PB99IM.zip.zip, the .zip is the extension and is not part of the actual filename itself)
(3) Mount your SD card and then place the PB99IMG.zip to the root of the SD card.
(4) Unmount the SD card and turn off the phone.
(5) Hold down the volume down key, and press the power button once, release the vol down key when in the Bootloader screen.
(6) You will then be asked to apply the PB99IMG.zip.
As a result, this will erase all your phone data, just like performing a hard/factory reset.
Thank you for the tips and guide MasDroid! I will use the ROM you suggested.
*i've created goldcard before i started to mess with the phone, so i can have it for "worst case" scenarios - better safe than sorry

I have tried this but when It reboots it just loads zip file and I get options:

And When I try to update for exe file I get CID error?
Can you help me to unroot my Desire?
Thanks

Still haveing the same problem. What do i need to do to get back to stock rom?

[SOLVED] No Boot, no ADB, no Recovery, only fastboot :( How to create a Goldcard now?

I'm stuck at a nearly 99% brick I think...
I've got an AMOLED Desire from T-Mobile Germany (still branded), with HBOOT 0.80.0000, rooted via Unrevoked and still S-ON.
The phone gets stuck during the boot process when the provider-splashscreen (or HTC-Logo) is shown at the beginning. Only pulling out the battery will shut the phone down.
The same happens when I try to get into Recovery via HBOOT. The only option is to pull the battery.
If I connect the phone via USB and enter Fastboot it is recognized by the computer with the command "fastboot devices".
I can't use ADB, because I can't access the recovery.
I downloaded the right RUU for my provider/amoled/hboot 0.80.0000 Desire (RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed) and extracted the ROM.zip from the installer. I renamed the file to PB99IMG.zip and manually moved it to the SDcard using my computer.
But, when I enter HBOOT the file is recognized and extracted, but then it fails ...due to an "incorrect CID".
The same happens if I manually execute the RUU....exe under Windows with my phone plugged in via USB. (It's error code 131 in the flash program of the RUU....exe).
A very helpful user (cargo) of a german Android forum (www.android-hilfe.de - link to his posting) assumed that my HBOOT is not correctly displayed and I might have a "newer" one than 0.80.0000
This leaves me quite without any option than to flash HTC RUU 2.29.405.5, which brings HBOOT 0.93.0001...(but I may be able to downgrade again.)
But this flash process is only possible if I have a Goldcard, which I actually don't have at the moment
Is there any way to create a Goldcard for my device in my actual position (only fastboot working, no boot to run the system, no adb working, no recovery access)?
Every howto explaining the goldcard crating process requires either working adb or even a running system for apps like "goldcard helper" or being able to use "terminal emulator"
I would be very very thankful for every bit of help
Maybe there is some way
Thanks in advance guys!
I believe that goldcards are specific to the card and not the phone(read it somewere on here) so it should be possible to make one without using your phone.

As far as I know you need the phone for your goldcard. At least it was said in the tutorial I was following a few months back. You need to connect the phone to get the serial number (through ADB shell) which you will need to hex-reverse and put it on your SD card image.
To be honest, they are more sophisticated methods now (as I read) creating a goldcard, but since unrEVOked, i do not follow that part.
And by the way, why don't you flash the HTC RUU 2.29.405.5? 0.93 HBOOT can be downgraded. But with the latest tools you can S-Off, root & whatever with that HBOOT, too.
I just tried flashing the HTC RUU 2.29.405.5 with the PB99IMG-method.
But I get an error "CID incorrect"
I treid to execute the HTC RUU.exe and I get again error code 131...which means something like "user-ID error"
But I could grab a screenshot of the actual "version" of the RUU...or what is this?
Thanks guys
CID incorrect? Your phone is unbranded or branded? Because I found this:
ERROR [294] : INVALID VENDOR ID
Every device contains a short string that identifies the operator who sold it. Because the same device is sold by different operators, this prevents users from flashing a T-Mobile ROM to a device that was sold by Orange, for example. You probably need to Install a HardSPL or CID Unlock your device.

I recommend to find a RUU for your device (e.g Vodafone, T-mobile etc.)
Also:
ERROR [131]: CUSTOMER ID ERROR
One of these error messages will appear when you use the wrong RUU to do the update. The RUU will check if the Model ID and Language ID are compatible with the Android phone. Make sure you use the correct RUU to update.

If it's saying wrong CID then it's branded, simple as that
1. Boot your phone in fastboot
2. Run the ruu that matches your phone.
You need a T-mobile branded ruu.
You can look here for one that matches. http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
I think you can try an UK one, because it is multilingual.
If it is giving you the same errors, then you picked a wrong version.

If you are rooted, then boot into the bootloader and flash a custom rom. Then create a gold card.

Yes, try that too, if you can.
Also use a NOA2SD Rom if you dont have ext partition. Or create one on your PC (if you want to use an A2SD ROM).
How can I flash a Rom using the bootloader?
Simply rename the zipped Image of a custom Rom into "PB99IMG.zip", put in on the SDcard and boot into HBOOT?
Thank you

Yes, if you rooted with unrEVOked. Boot in to recovery (clockworkMOD/AmonRa) wipe all data and flash a CUSTOM rom.
You don't have to rename it, it can be anything as soon as it is .zip

Yeah, sorry, my bad.
Well you can try to falsh it via PB99IMG.zip, but i won't think it work.
your only hope is finding a working RUU. (at least seems to me, if you can access only fastboot).
Hi all, have same trouble with flashing via PB99IMG, but in my case, the device normally loads the firmware and returned to fastbut. When you try to go to recovery device hangs on the logo. Фfter removing the battery and re-attempt to restart the device, it begins to vibrate 7 times and then freezes on the logo. What do these vibration?
PB99IMG.zip will work as you don't need recovery. Just put it on the root of your SD card and boot into HBOOT. It'll find the file and flash it
did renaming rom to pb99img nd flash via hboot work for you?
i have a similar problem, rather same prob, only fastboot available
To let this thread maintain usefullness for future readers:
The solution was to take a goldcard from a friend and flash the right (matching hboot, provider and version) RUU, by using the PB99IMG method.
By this the phone will be set back to it's delivery state! This will include the Rom, all data in the NAND storage the recovery and everything else, which got modified like getting root access or S-OFF etc.
Troubles were caused by USB-Brick or an error on my old ext3 partition or maybe even corrupt data in my Titanium file-backup I restored a few days before the crash :/
I can't clearly say what is the main cause...maybe it was a combination of all.
If you don't have got any chance of getting another goldcard (yes the goldcard creation does NOT depend on the devices! It can be created with ANY android phone ) you are really screwed.
My advice: Always keep a spare microSD card, equipped with it's goldcard image around!
Because I was not able to find any method to echo the CID (Id of the SDcard) in fastboot.
Greetings
And good luck to all of you having comparable issues

[Q] HTC Desire HD stuck in hboot, no recovery

First off, I know there are a lot of posts with this problem. Mine seems to be slightly different or I'm just stupid. (Probably the latter) Anyway, Desire HD stuck at hboot. S-OFF, cant get into recover either. SD card is blank. Here is what it says at the screen.
ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.0007
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
and a date.
Also, I usually pay people to root my phone but I cant do it this time around. I updated the ROM and now this. Please help! I can pay you if you can figure it out.
Thank you so much
Are there no options or text below the date? It should say "HBOOT" or "FASTBOOT" and present a small menu of coloured text options.
Also, what ROM did you update before this happened?
It would be good to know exactly what steps led to your problem before suggesting how to fix this. Try to give as much detail as you can.
It says Hboot. and yes, has the options below. The last update was for Cyanogen 7.0 but didnt like it. I went to go back and just recover the back up of what I had because I liked what was on there and yeah, didnt work out so well. Got to love your friends. lol
I have tried bortaks troubleshooting guide and flash a new recovery using android flasher but that doesnt seem to be working either. When I go to recovery, its just sticks me to the splash screen and wont do nothing.
Firstly, as long as you have a working bootloader, your phone isn't bricked and can be recovered.
Well it seems you are Radio S-Off (Ship S-Off), but you also need Eng S-Off to flash a recovery from the command line using fastboot.exe. I'm pretty sure danward's Android Flasher uses fastboot, so I'm not surprised it didn't work.
What to do next depends on whether you can get access to your sdcard from your PC. If you can - with a card reader in the PC, or another phone to put the card in and connect via USB - then go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Download the stock 1.32 PD98IMG.zip ROM from Section 1 and put it on the root of your SD card. Then put the card back in your DHD, and reboot into the bootloader.
It should recognise the PD98IMG.zip file and ask if you want to flash it, press Volume Up to confirm. This will put the stock 1.32.405.6 HTC ROM on your phone - this is an early shipped HTC firmware and it's the easiest version to root.
Edit: Note this file and the RUU below are for a Desire HD, and I don't think they will work on an Inspire - see later in the thread for some links to Inspire files.
Once it's flashed, it will replace everything - ROM, Recovery, radio - with the stock versions so you'll need to use the hack kit again, but you should still have Radio S-Off. Also remove the PD98IMG.zip file from your SD card when done, otherwise each time you go into the bootloader it will ask if you want to flash it.
If for any reason you can't get the PD98IMG.zip onto your SD card, you could try running an RUU (Rom Update Utility), this is the official HTC firmware in an EXE file you run from your PC. Plug your phone in via the USB cable and run the RUU file. You can find them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19101263#post19101263
The 1.32 version isn't there, so I would go for the next oldest WWE version (WWE = world wide edition, i.e. not carrier-branded)
RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3_R_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_release_161342_signed.exe
If that runs, it will do the same as the PD98IMG.zip, i.e. put your phone back to stock HTC firmware, but once again you will retain Radio S-Off.
I don't know much about the Ace Hack Kit as I rooted my phone before it came out, but I'm pretty sure that it will root either of those two versions of the stock firmware just fine. Good luck!
I downloaded it 3 times from 2 different sources, put it on my sd card, still nothing. Am I doing anything wrong?
Is you USB cable still connected? If it is, the bootloader will go into FASTBOOT mode, and you need to be in HBOOT mode. What does it say under the date, fastboot or hboot?
If it says fastboot, just pull the USB cable out and reboot the phone.
Otherwise I'm not sure why it's not working.
I tried both ways. hboot and fast boot. All you need to do is start the phone up on h boot right? It runs through those codes looking for it and says not found on all 4 of them.

This is probably a stupid question, but it is definitely a Desire HD, right?
What file names does it say it's looking for when it runs through the codes, does it definitely say PD98DIAG and PD98IMG?
Maybe try the RUU method instead?
Inspire from ATT, same thing right? Its says
sd checking....
loading....[PD98DIAG.zip]
No Image
Loading....[PD98DIAG.nbh]
No Image or Wrong Image
Loading....[PD98img.zip]
No Image
Loading......[PD98img.nbh]
No Image or wrong image.
I would try the other method but I cant find android 1.0 usb driver that it apparently needs. It will still flash though for some reason. What do you think?
The file is definitely called PD98IMG.zip and is on the root of your sd card?
Edit: Any drivers should be installed when you install HTC Sync on your PC, if you haven't done this already get it here:
http://www.htc.com/www/help/
PD98IMG is the file name and its a compressed file so that would make .zip. correct? I have nothing else on the sd card, just that.
Hmm, do you know how to turn on filename extensions in Windows?
For Win7, go to My Computer, Organize menu, then Folder & Search Options. Click on to the View tab and un-tick "Hide extensions for known file types".
Then check the filename again and make sure it ends .zip, and not .rar or something else. Some browsers can change the file name when downloading zip files.
Weird, though. I've just tried a PD98IMG.zip on my phone to check my instructions and it should be okay. I'm not so familiar with the Inspire, but if it's looking for a PD98IMG.zip you should be fine. I think the main difference is in sound files, but the ROMs are otherwise the same.
I checked it. Yes, it is named exactly that. I wonder why it wont run?
I think it's because it's an Inspire. Inside the PD98IMG.zip is a file called android-info.txt, and the first line of that is
Code:
modelid: PD9810000
The model ID for the Inspire is (I think) PD9812000. So it's not recognising the zip as valid.
You'll need a PD98IMG.zip specifically for an Inspire. Maybe check the Inspire forums? Although the phones are very similar they're not 100% the same, and folks there might know which file you need, or where to find the right RUU. Sorry, I didn't realise the PD98IMG file would need to be different.
You might just be able to replace the android-info.txt file inside the zip with one from an Inspire, not sure if that would work though.
Edit: Also, for the RUU you probably need the US-specific file, which is RUU_Ace_Cingular_US_1.80.502.3_Radio_12.39.60.19_26.06.04.14
Edit2: Found this PD98IMG.zip which is for an Inspire, it's the same 1.80.502.3 version mentioned above.
http://www.multiupload.com/JELMZNSKDF
I think I found the file for the Inspire. I'm going to try that next. As far as that last post, That is way over my head, lol.
Good luck! The file linked above at the multiupload address is definitely an Inspire version, so try that if the one you found doesn't work. I'm off now but will check this thread again in the morning just in case.
Thank you so much for your help. I'll post and tell you what happened
Happened to me once, if push comes to shove down load stock Rom from dev section. It is an .exe file that will restore your DHD back to stock from h-boot u will have to root your phone again though ! Good luck

[Q] I think I bricked my Desire.

Hi,
In an attempt to downgrade from HBOOT 1.03 to Alpharev I followed the tutorial in this forum titled "[S-ON][TUTORIAL] Downgrade from a ROM Hboot 1.03 to a ROM Hboot 0.9". Problem is, when I tried to flash misc, I was not using a gold card and pretty much corrupted the partition. After that my phone is now pretty much useless. No calls can be made, does not pick up my carrier, can't mount SD card. trying to install stock RUU crashes both my PHONE and my COMPUTER.
Things I've tried:
Use stock RUU to flash again ( Crashes computer and phone )
Use fastboot to flash stock ROM.ZIP in RUU ( Says RUU is corrupt )
Use PB99IMG.zip on card, reboot, nothing happens ( says image is corrupt or not found ).
Try restore from nandroid ( can't mount sdcard )
I have the original misc partition on my computer, so if i find a way to restore it I can flash it back.
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Apart form a walk down to a Telstra dealer and coming back with a new phone?
Thanks =]

Sorry, it's unlockable...
I think you got in usb-brick situation.
I'm not sure if you can flash misc with S-ON define?
try "fastboot flash misc mtd0.img" (you can use your misc or donwload from web (keyword: Quick & dirty HTC Desire mtd0.img generator for usb-bricked devices by stevebrush))
What was the file that you named PB99IMG.zip originally? Was it an HBoot .img, ROM...??
Had a USB Brick a week or so ago, when going CM7 > DG > CM7r2...except in haste, I forgot to flash the r2 after DG and tried to flash ROM. OOOPS!!! lol. When I loaded CM7r2.img and renamed PB99..., I must have loaded the wrong file and got the same response you did. Tried again, got it right this time and phone updated and rebooted, all good.
Sorry, I don't recall exactly what I did to cause the corrupt image, but I know that perserverance fixed it...

Main Version is Older - not possible to create the goldcard anymore

Hi people.
I am trying to install the RUU the special version of DHD that I have.
I found at the end the rom file and I renamed it to PD98IMG.zip and I got it started but I get the message: Main Version is Older
I read that I have to create a gold card (memory card) and put the file PD98IMG.zip and try again.
The problem is that I cannot create the goldcard anymore. The website for the IMG FILES doesn't work anymore.

Do you know if there's other possibility to flash to ruu? The phone is unusable. The only possibility is to install the RUU.
Thanks in advance.
