hi,
first of all i hope that this problem hasn't been posted anywhere else before, if so please send me the link to that thread. anyway:
I've always had issues with mobile network reception in my room (i live in the countryside) but after years i manage to find the spots in my room, where there's quite good reception and so i always put my phones in the spots. it normally works well that way but with my new desire hd it's not that easy sometimes:
from time to time it just doesn't get any network reception, no matter how long i have it laying in that spot. but the strange thing is when i put it into airplane-mode and then back into normal-mode, all the sudden it gets (quite good) reception again. i've tried this a few times now (with attention on not moving the phone or changing its position in any way) and it always works that way... my question is if somebody can tell me what's wrong with my phone and if there is a solution for it apart from the airplanemode-trick (that's not a satisfying solution, cause the problem occurs on an irregular basis and i often don't notice it until someone calls me on my landline, asking me why i didn't respond to their textmessages etc...)
thanks in advance to your answers
my phone: HTC Desire HD, Bootloader 1.38..., rooted, radio s-off, eng s-off, but still htc-standart rom with android 2.2
Using the stock phone app dial *#*#4636#*#* it will automatically go to a menu when you press the last *.
First option then scroll down you'll see a select box, probably says WCDMA preferred, change it to GSM auto and see if that helps.
More info on this can be found by searching too.
If that doesn't work you could try using a different radio (again, search. Lotas of info in teh dev forum already).

Hi guys, I have a strange problem.
Sometimes when I try to call someone, the phone cuts off the connection right before it should vibrate to signal that the phone was answered. This means I can hear the other side picking the phone up, but I hear like "H" (sharp, short) when they try to say "hello". No matter whether I have phone by my ear or laying on the table, sometimes it cuts off, other times it doesn't. When I make the call again, it works.
This started to happening to me since I've updated my sw version to 1.21, when it was 1.15, it worked like a charm. For the last 4 days I tried to make 3 calls, every one of them was cut out and worked on the second try.
Anyone has the same problem/knows the solution?
Thank you very much, It's annoying as hell since every call costs me twice
EDIT: I'm using stock ROM, updated with OTA, no root

Sorry for my English, I'm Czech.
Really? No one?
desire drops calls after a few seconds
Hi!
I've the same problem, since today - very annoying. All start with a call from a friend and after I said "hello" the call ends, but network connection was fine (4 bars). After that I tried to call him back 10 times, every time the same thing - call drops after 1-3 seconds.
A Reboot solved the problem for one time, next call same issue. Tried my sim in the HTC Wildfire of my colleague - same network, everything is fine.
Now I started to uninstall all Taskkiller and other apps i recently added - no change. After 30 min try and error I realised that if I turn of the "Mobile Internet" and therefore the 3g connection, it works better.
anyone have a clue what this could cause?
Joint the club.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712030
Mine does exactly the same thing... first of all I thought it was the phone... returned it... new phone, different sim.... same problem.
Geeba have you tried to turn off "mobile internet"?
After my problems yesterday I turned it off and since that no call was dropped!!
Maybe its some sort of concurrent use of 3g Network and the data threads kill the call ... actually I'm no expert in Mobile Networks.
I'm looking forward to Froyo and hope to get rid of the probs.
Minos - yes I have turned off the 3g - but I then have internet connection problems... pretty pointless having a smart phone that has no internet access..
But yes it does help... the Desire I think should be able to monitor the two signals and switch between them accordingly .... but it doesn't. my Mrs has the Hero... it doesn't suffer this problem so personally I think its a problem with the desire.... I'm going to wait till Froyo then if its no better there will be a nice unbranded black Desire gracing ebay!
had the same issue for a few days then i uninstalled juice defender and i havnt had a single dropped call after
I have had the same issue. And then I have read somewhere here what to do.
You must first enter the phone's debug menu: *#*#4636#*#*
Then Choose "Phone Info", scroll down to" Set preferred network type" and set this to GSM auto (PRL). For me it solved all the call drop problem. As you are on different network maybe some other setting will work for you but it might worth to take a try with it.
I am not exactly sure what this sets. One thing is sure I still have 3G and HSUPA connection - and all type of connection works like charm. So nothing changed just no more call drops since then.
benoke: Thanks for your idea, actually my Desire is now beying hospitalized as it had dust under the screen, anyway I reported dropping calls as an issue too while returning in warranty so we'll see what happens
i sent a support question to htc and got that answer:
"Thank you for contacting HTC. In regards to your question, I can help you with that. It does indeed sound like a hardware fault, I would be grateful if you would call our tech-suooprt team and let our agents arrange the return / repair of this device for you. If you could just call 0845 890 0079, we can arrange the collection. I trust that this resolves your query. Please do not hesitate to contact us again if required."
But I don't think its an HW issue.
@benoke: the GSM auto setting worked - four 1h now.
Minos: it is good to hear that it might work for you too. I have recommended it to some of my friends and they all say it works for them.. so it really seems like solution...
Try the new version 5.09x radio in the android development in desire forum to see if that miight help
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Haven't found a way to solve this issue yet. They told me at the service station that this is unrepairable issue occuring only with some SIM cards and that they would give me a refund.
I'm buying HTC Desire HD when it is available...
Hi
Just found this post in google code android, this is the issue I have had for 12 weeks, tried different roms 2.1/2.2 and radio's 5.x 04 08 20 and 4.05 and 6 had anyone managed to get to the bottom of it ?
Apparently if it drops the signal it does not search unless you go into aeroplane mode or pull the battery, then can work for 5 minutes or 10 hours before happening again, driving me mad.

I'm about to give up on android however I really love the phone HTC Desire with stock modaco froyo rom but on a basic level I need to make calls.
Thanks
Derek
Return it to your dealer and get a replacement.
It sounds like its handset specific. I haven't noticed it on mine, and I move in and out of bad reception all the time.
Let me guess.. is Orange your provider?
I'm on 02 don't think it's hardware as on google groups it happens to multiple handsets.
have you tried to clean a contacts of you sim card, on the bottom of it?
btw, how old is it? I've experienced same problem on Diamond due to it was quite old(7 years of using). I've asked my provider to change it for a new one, and that helped me to solve this issue.
Had the same problem, then i downloaded the app "2G-3G OnOff" and set the phone only to go on the 2g network and never had a problem since...
This is a know issue, although I think it may be specific to certain operators. I'm on Meteor Ireland and this issue has been discussed at length on their forums (http://forums.meteor.ie/index.php?showtopic=359) since the launch of the Hero v1.5.
Meteor were apparently working in conjunction with HTC on a solution but still nothing. I had the problem on vanilla 2.2 on my desire but as yet I don't think it's happened me on MCR r7, touch wood.
phone and sim are only 12 weeks old, I thought it might be a radio problem so I'm down to 5.x.04 and I'll let you know over the next couple of days
Also going to try another fix posted in xda:-
Another user posted this:
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Sellect phone information and scroll all the way down to the bottom
Select the set preffered network type and change to GSM auto (prl)
OK, Firstly, does anyone else have the Defy on the Three network and is it working alright for you??
I'm just trying to figure out whether this is a phone problem or a network issue. Basically I'll unlock the phone, go onto google, search for something and that's when the wait starts, it's really weird, I'll have full 3G signal, and neither of the little traffic arrows will do anything, which makes me think it's not a network issue. Absolutely all network traffic locks up, including gmail, market etc
But then if I make a phone call and hang up it will start working again fine. All I can think is that it's just a little software glitch in my phone. Does anyone know if Motorola will send me a ROM update/repair tool for the phone because I'm guessing it's something to do with that, or even try rolling back to Eclair 2.1 to try that. And yes, before you ask, I've tried many times doing a full wipe/factory reset and it makes no difference.
I've quadruple checked all my APN settings for Three which don't even have usernames or passwords and even checked the settings were correct in the secret service menu. Also when I had the problems I ran a ping test (in the secret menu *#*#4636#*#*) and they all returned "failed could not find ip"
It's just so weird how random it is, I can't work it out. Maybe the defy really isn't compatible with three.
If anyone's got any ideas please please please leave info below.
One other thing I forgot to mention is that the defy was previously locked to Tmobile(uk) and was unlocked using a simple unlock code, no hacking or modding involved
Hi mate,
I've been using my defy on 3 UK with no problems since Jan. I've been on eclair the whole time. Currently the 2.51 stock.

Managed to get a HTC Desire for an absolute steal of a price as the seller had managed to forget his lock pattern and hadn't set up a google mail account to bypass the lock pattern. Having used Android phones before I knew that if I could just figure out the correct combination of buttons on startup I'd be able to reset the phones to factory settings and have a working phone.
So, I quickly bought the phone, figured out the "Power+Vol Down" combination and ran a factory reset from within that menu.
The phone restarted and I went through the setup and everything seemed fine, until I tried to send a text/make a call.
When I send a text message, I get the message sending failed error and it retrys various times before the phone finally gives up and stops trying.
When I try and make a call the phone just hangs for a couple of seconds on the dialing screen, beeps and cuts off (as though I have no signal).
I assumed that the phone had been blocked, hence the seller was selling it so cheap and he had come up with this story of locking it out, but after having a play I realised the internet was working perfectly and I had full HSDPA signal. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I'd have no sort of connection if the phone had been blocked by the carrier?
I assumed this was a software issue and have updated from 2.2 to 2.3 but still the same issue. After updating, I've also realised that I am unable to change network carriers (I'm on TMobile and they now share networks with orange).
My sim works perfectly in other phones and if I put another sim in the Desire, it still has the same issues. The phone is locked to TMobile (not that I think that would matter), running the official HTC 2.3 Gingerbread release and as far as I'm aware my APN settins are all okay.
If anyone could shed any light onto what is going on here, and hopefully to a fix then it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in adavnce

my apologies, thanks for moving me to the correct forum
Hi
Just got my new Samsung Galaxy Nexus today, but it cant find a network and have no signal.
I have tried to search for network in settings, but it comes up empty.
In the "about phone" page under signal it says -113db and 0 asu (varies a little bit, but not much)
I'm in Norway using OneCall, on the Telenor network, but the phone cant find any network.
The simcard works fine in other android devices.
The phone was sold as unlocked/simfree.
It says "onecall" on the bottom of the notification bar when I pull it down.
There are also apn settings for my simcard (looks like they are read from the simcard)
Wifi works great, and I can't see any other problems than that it cant find a network, but that is kind of a big problem since it is a phone!
I have rebooted multiple times, three factory resets, and tried with another simcard, but no luck.
Anyone have a idea what to try? should I try a custom rom? or do you think its a hardware problem?
I just saw "Telenor" when I searched for networks, but when I tried to connect it said it couldn't connect, and now I cant find it again.
Seems like I just have the worst possible antenna! (or radio?)
What type of phone did you have previously? Maybe you need an updated SIM card?
A new SIM card has solved this type of issue for quite a few people so give it a shot!

Click to collapse
But it works in other phones like the HTC Desire and the old Hero.
I just drove into town, and I got a few bars, could make phone calls and so on.
But back home it still cant find a network.
Which leaves me to believe that the antenna (or the radio) is bad.
Do I have to root it and install a custom recovery to install the stock rom again?
Or is there a "rescue" solution? like on HTC devices.
Works fine here. Test a custom rom or another radio or something.. If it not works go back to stock and return it. I bought a HTC once with a bad antenna.
same problem
what did you end up doing kjetil84? I have the same problem. at home I have like no signal, but other places I have a litle. I use Talkmore witch also uses telenor.
an update would be great
That happened to me once before, try doing a factory reset.
still a problem
Just tried a factory reset, and it did not help
I love the phone, but at this time its not usable for me
