I'm using hand cent as my ui for texts instead of the stock sense app, is there a way to get rid of the stock one completely?

Can you not delete the MMS.apk from the /system/app folder? I'd freeze the stock app in TB first to make sure Handcent doesn't need it for anything.
See I thought the same thing I went into it under manage apps and deleted cache and everything, it ended up deleting all my convos in each the hand cent and stock one, so I think it needs parts out of that apk

Okay I used tb to freeze it and I can stillget texts but I'm not going to delete it,i don't know if it holds anything else that I may need

when i freeze my mms.apk my texts still work but I will get the popup in handcent right away and about 30 seconds later the notification sound will play. as soon as i unfreeze it pops up and plays audio right away. Other than that I have noticed no problems with freezing it

I use a themed stock MMS, so I'm not sure if Handcent is a stand-alone messaging app or if it works with the stock app. As for freezing vs uninstalling; smart move. That's what I do if I'm not sure how the ROM will behave without the .apk. If all is well after a few days, I'll go back in and uninstall it to free up internal storage.
On the Moment, you had to have stock MMS even if you were using Handcent or Chomps, et al. Just had to uncheck the notifications in settings.
I can only assume the Evo is the same way (Or all 'droids, for that mater)

Handcent is a stand alone app and you do not need the stock sms app.
To uninstall:
-open titanium backup
-taps backup/restore at the top
-scroll down till you see the stock sms app
-tap it, select uninstall
Now, what I recently realized, if you DELETE the backups or it, then select uninstall the app, the next time you flash and update of your rom, like CM7 nightly 64 > 65, it'll list all the "uninstalled apps" at the top, for quick deletion, which I find useful.
i just changed the file ext from .apk to .adk through root explorer....a lil easier,i think
Thus has been real help full , if you change the type of file its still taking up space, only down side

in the past i found that sometimes i couldnt open an mms in handcent but could in the native app. after it was opened in the native app i could then open it in handcent. so i figured whats the harm in keeping the native just in case

Some where in Themes and Apps i saw a zip file that replaced the evo's sto k messaging app. At the time i was not intrested in it because all it looked to do is theme it black.
I am wondering if it is possible to replace the stock messaging app on evo with handcent. I am using root explorer but can't find the stock app in system/app. All thats there is messageuploader.apk and deleting this just takes the possibility to recieve new text away.

I heard it was done with the G1 and MyTouch, not sure if it will work with sense phones. You could try swapping apk's in a ROM and flashing, thats what I would do.

I was going to attempt this only there is no messaging.apk located in system/app
It was mms.apk for the stock Evo messaging app. I am gonna try flashing and post results in a bit.
This was about the easiest mod ever.
1 Just install handcent or your choice.
2 I used Root Explorer and deleted mms.apk.
No problems sending or recieving messages yet

Outstanding! So I just move handcent to the system/app folder and delete mms.apk? Root explorer is the best app ever. Im going to try this too, I never was too fond of the stock sms, but I dont like having multiple apps doing the same thing also, weird things happen.
Yes it worked for me, it takes away the stock messaging widget as well. There is a file in system/app named MessageUploader.apk make sure to leave there or you will not be able to recieve text (i thought i was getting ignored).
Do a regular download and install of handcent
Force stop messaging app settings/applications
Use Root Explorer move mms.apk to sd card, getting it out of system folder & allowing you a back up
Reboot to recovery clear cashe
CHEERS TO HANDCENT BEING YOUR NEW ONLY MESSAGING APPLICATION
Nothing more to add besides the title. I have a black, gray, aqua theme going and I'm tired of chompsms screwing things up and handscent sucking period. The stock messaging app is white and I can't figure out how to change it. Any ideas?

See if you can push the Mms.apk from CyanogenMod. You can make it have a black background with white text and many other things.
This is going to sound like a newbie question, but how would I do that? I've pushed apks before via file manager, but never one that was from a rom.

I haven't tried it, but...
go to settings/applications and check "unknown sources" to allow software from outside the market.
get a rom that has the apk you want, rename the rom to .zip, unzip it, and pull the apk from system/app. Put it on your sdcard and install via file manager.

I got all the way up to the install park. Apparently it's the same apk as the regular messaging app (except the ability to customize it, of course) so when I got to the installation screen it asked me if I wanted to browse the apk or "uninstall". I tried uninstall so I could install the modded one, to no success (it is a baked in app).
I guess I'll have to wait til I decide to root (which really means, when a stable CM rom comes out).
Try Handcent. Its in the market..free and pretty cool.

Chomp is more stable, less laggy and consumes less battery life. My only issue with it is that whenever someone sends me a picture, it keeps bringing up the same picture someone sent me over a month ago. It sucks, but oh well. Until root, I'm sticking with it.

that is a dealbreaker for you and I switched to handcent. I would switch to stock if it could do the iphone/bubble format

It might work if it had a higher version number or a different java name... sounds like a little project for the EZ Bake oven.
or you could root your phone.
Sent from my CyanogenMod Vision
Wait, did you say your phone wasnt't rooted? If not then there is nothing you can do because its a /system app, and to modify /system files you need root.
If you do have root, you can save the cm apk to your desktop and use
"adb remount
Adb push C:/Users/(name) /Desktop/Mms. apk /system/app/Mms. apk"
From a command prompt. Otherwise you can use a root file explorer to copy the app into the /system/app directory.

okay so with the new handcent sms update a feature included is "Default messaging application"
the description for this is:
"Set handcent as the default messaging application, completely disable stock messaging application and 3rd application for SMS or MMS."
my question is, does this make it possible to delete the stock messaging app through root uninstaller?
And i only want to do this because they finaly came out with an ALL black theme lol.
In my experience with using this same option on GO SMS, yes, if you set Handcent to handle incoming/outgoing SMSs and MMSs, you can delete stock messenger. I'd suggest just freezing it in Titanium Backup if you can, though. And if you delete it, make a backup of it first.

Ill try that then, thanks! The stock messaging app seems to be open in the background a lot.

I had always heard that handcent needs the stock messaging - that hand cent is more of a ui not a service.
I'd love to yank the stock one if it's not necessary.
No you don't need the stock messanger for handcent to work. Both the wifes phone and mine are running handcent only. As mentioned above though use Titanium or Root Uninstaller Pro to back up the app first just in case. I've unistalled it a fair number of times thanks to my Rom'itus and never had an issue though!

Yes I was using handcent for some time, every time I flashed a rom I would uninstall mms.apk with titanium and get handcent, it works just fine.
Although, from what I understand you cannot receive mms with handcent on sprint, never tried having both stock and handcent to see if u receive that way
Sent from my SPH-D700
Thanks guys! Yeah I just pulled the stock one , and it works just fine, but I would recommend freezing or backing up.
*edit* oh and btw I think you can remove mms.apk since thi app gives you the option of handling both sms and mms.
Sent from my SPH-D700
Edit: DO NOT selct the retrieve automatically setting under handcent settings. It will overide the voicemail and you will only reciecve voicemail notifacations through sms/mms.

Nope not as of yet
im not sure how this I'd going to turn out in the long run but for now it seems to b working fine with the exception that i cant change settings without FC. all text seem to be going and arriving and so do pictures. i cruised over to galaxy S 2 forum and grabbed there cyanogenmod rom, it was like 99mb, i then extracted it on my sd card and went straight ahead and tried to install and overwrite out mms.apk but that was a no go. i then chopped out with root explorer and went to system/app and pasted it there and it overwrote out stock mms.apk. thus far it seems as if though all my text are working just fine and pics are also sending just fine. the only other thing I did was cleared the dalvik via titanium backup. just thought id share my experience thus far. I restored mine from a Titanium backup and have had nothing but force closes. I read a few tips to try, but havent yet. Ill report back if I find a solid solution.
Ok, so rather than flash again to CM10.1 or whatever, I've decided I would like to disable the conversion of <3 into that one with the Android with hearts for Eyes, and likewise for all other Emoji.
Is this possible without massive effort, or should I switch to another MMS application. I'm not opposed to plan B. Handcent and Chomp are my two candidates.
However I wanna know if this is something that is built into the keyboard first, since if thats the case almost all my apps will display them in place of plaintext ones.
I am also open to modifying font packages if I need to.
GO SMS is a very good SMS app

Yeah, I just tried to fiddle and replace the emojis in the fonts and ****, with a backup beforehand of course. They showed up as squares, so I said screw it and installed GO SMS Pro. Oddly all of the issues I was having before such as Contact Pictures and whatnot, arent occuring, and on deodexed its oddly pretty fast.
I am still having the issue with GO Contacts EX Not grouping contacts by contacts (Like I have configured in google), but at least GO SMS Pro works now!
Heck I can even only have it display mobile contacts.
Oh hey look I accidentally....a bad word XP.
