[Q] ClockworkMod for Defy - Defy General

Hi there!
I have recently heard that someone compiled koush's ClockworkMod for Defy. Am I right? I have heard about some recoveries (kb7sqi, tenfar) but actually I was looking forward to CM being able to auto-install the proper recovery, as it does by default with Milestone, Droid X and Droid 2.
Is that true? How can I get it?
Thanks!

You can use 2.5.1.8 (kb7sqi) without any issues. Or you can give a try to bootmenu, it's the most used now.
Quarx will included CWM 3.0 in his new beta of Cyanogemod 7 too.

So I understand that there is not such CWM available for Defy now, right? Because this kb7sqi's thread is only about the CWM Recovery, not the CWM itself... sorry, as you can see I'm a bit n00b on modding and that's why I prefer to have a "suite" such as CWM.
How can I get bootmenu? Market? Official Thread?
Looking forward to the stable release of CyanogenMod 7.1 for Defy

Bootmenu

CM7 is stable for me now, i'm using it since the first beta and I can say that's pretty stable now. Some people relate problems with Wifi and GPS, but for the majority of users everything is working perfect. The performance boost is awesome too.

I'm not sure what you mean/want. Isn't clockworkmod the same as recovery? Every recovery for defy installs working (proper?) recovery for defy. 2nd Init/bootmenu is the most convenient to install and use, as recovery can be started before system boots. It doesn't contain the latest bootmenu but it doesn't need the latest bootmenu to work flawlessly.

Just rooted my G2, got a few questions

I've got my G2 rooted with S-off and now I am just curious as to how I get the latest Cyanogen rom on it as well as whether or not i need to factory reset my phone or not.
thanks for any of the help
I just did it. Go to that thread where the rom is and there is a wiki link that tells u how to do it.
I'm by far not experienced with this stuff and have done it once before and it was very easy. I mostly used the wiki link.
From my permarooted overclocked HTC G2 with cyanogen 7 nightly via XDA app
I recommend you read and understand all the information regarding rooting, rom manager, flashing roms, how to restore nandroid in case things don't go correctly..
Always so a nandroid before flashing a new rom
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I've rooted before on my G1 so i know about recovery, rom manager, and nandroid backups just was wondering if anything has changed since the G1, but I just figured it out, i'm currently running cyanogenmod 6.1.1
I am curious as to what cyanogen mod nightly is
Also I heard the best overclocking app for root users was setcpu, how is it? and does it work on the G2?

The CyanogenMod Nightlies are daily (nightly) updates to the ROM, that include the latest changes to it, most of which are experiments or small corrections. I'd only recommend flashing these if you have an interest in being on the bleeding edge of the ROM. For most people, the RC1 and then later on the stable CM7 mod will be best for them.
As far as installing CM7 (probably the RC1) goes, be sure to do a FULL data, cache, dalvik wipe before flashing. It just makes things much easier and lets you start off fresh while lowering the possibility of issues. It is very easy to simply flash through ROM manager and check the box for "wipe data+cache". I also recommend checking the "google addon" box as well, so you can get your Google Apps at the same time. If you don't you'll have to flash them separately later.
And as always, do a nandroid backup before you flash!
SetCPU is definitely the most widely used to regulate overclocks/underclocks and have profiles set, but CM7 also has a native overclocking system built into CMSettings that does basically the same thing.

[Q] What is the best Recovery image?

So tell me guys, wich is the best recovery for my Desire?
I just want to intsall the latest and greatest custom roms without having problems with mounting issues or script languages or so. what is the stablest?
So? CWM2.5.0.7 or CWM3 or even 4?
Or should i use amonra or some of the mods?
Thanks
I used CWM, but then installed AmonRA 2.0.1 - it installed everything for me (AOSP, Sense based, Miui).
But if you want to use CWM, I'd recommend 3.1.0.1.
First, check the erasesize of your device: if it is 40000, then you can only use AmonRA. If anything other, it's your choice.
i have one of the first desires with amoled screen and the smaller erasesize.
currently i am using psfmod wich is based on cwm 2.5.0.7 or so.
i know i can use any recovery on my device but i want to know wich is the best in terms of stability and usability and even the one without bugs and the abillity to install all the latest roms.

Check these two threads, they touch upon the same topic and there are many replies.
yeah thanks.
seems like sticking with my current recovery is the best choice till i will reach a point where i need a newer recovery for installing a new rom.

Installing Roms

Hi i just wanted to know the easiest way to install a new rom on my defy. I have cm7 currently installed. Let me get this straight everytime you want to install a new rom you have to use rsd lite you cant just install zip from sd card through recovery? seems like a long process not really worth going through just to test a few roms? is this right or is there an easier way? thanks
If the base OS required is the same (meaning the new ROM works on the same kernel) then you can simply switch ROM's via Custom Recovery (CWM), but you have to wipe data and cache to avoid bootloops or other unexpected errors. If anything goes wrong and you mess up the bootmenu or the CWM module then you must flash the SBF again. I've successfully switched between CM7 and MIUI without flashing again the Froyo CEE.
Thanks that clears up a little bit, but how do i know if a rom uses the same kernel?

You welcome! Generally the ROM dev's mentions which base ROM should be used, if not you always can ask or read others comments, if any.
Ok cool thanks im with it now. Do u know which rom cm7 rc 1 is based on?

If I'm not wrong the latest nightly builds are based on Froyo CEE or SEA. If you install RC1v2 or one nightly with BOOTXXX on it then it will upgrade also your kernel so you don't have to worry. See more details on CM7 topic.

CWM recover v6.0.0.0

Koush's Recovery builder is now building CWM Recovery v6.0.0.0, the recovery is already included in the latest nightly of CM9. My question is how to get this to people that aren't using cm9, or make a permanent one that can be downloaded and flashed or odined separate from any roms. There is a build made for epicmtd at http://jenkins.cyanogenmod.com/job/recovery/1585/ you can download the recovery.img file from there, but I was hoping to make a flashable zip or something from it. The builder is pretty sweet, can also build a touch version. I understand I already have it on my phone because I used the latest cm9 nightly, but does that actually replace the older CWM, or just add another one that resides inside the kernel... if I'm not mistaken in the past I ended up with 2 versions of CWM on my phone, one that was odined in and permanent, and another that was actually a part of cm9. I also was going to build the touch version to check out but I didn't and will hold off until I hear back from people on this thread.
the CM team had a temp boot CWM Touch available some months back. They said there was an issue with flashing it permanent, and hadn't heard or seen any update for it since then (think this was march or april)
I'd love to see a fully working CWM Touch for our Epics.

Clockwork recovery

Probably a brain dead question but here goes. Rooted and all that from the wiki and installed mimicry and life is good. Of course the wiki has you install cwr so I went to the market and downloaded cwm to play with it and to buy it to support the dev. Ran it and of course it says there is no cwr installed (old version issue I would assume) so started googleing around and see post that say you can't install the recovery from cwm without hosing the phone which seems a bit odd to me so before I do install a new recovery from it figured I would ask the smart people here first.

I believe when you rooted you installed CWR on step 4.a.2. The application on the market is just a tool to make it easier to access recovery, download and flash ROMs, etc. You really don't need it installed for CWR. Though it does make installing the new versions of recovery easier.
If you perform
Code:
adb reboot recovery
it should boot you into CWR you installed during your rooting process.
I can get into recovery no problem (hold power select reboot into recovery) more just wondering if the versions it installs are better or if they are even made for the g2. Not a big deal as the one on the phone works great was just curious.

The versions that were listed on the wiki (touch and non-touch) are fairly current. I wouldn't worry about upgrading unless you're having problems wiping/flashing.
No problems at all. So I will just buy it to support him and don't worry about installing one of them from the program. Although playing with the touch recovery may be interesting.
