If i format my SD card from my PC and reboot it with the SD card completely empty, will the system rebuild the factory default folders or will it not boot at all?

I have an EVO and can't get my SDCard to mount. I think it is a card format issue. I was getting a lot of SDCARD damaged messages. I could get by them by rebooting. I rebooted and copied everything to my mac. On the copy it said there was a problem with the "tmp" folder. I thought I was deleting the tmp folder from my backup, but actually was the SDCARD copy. I rebooted and then unmounted the SDCARD, and tried to reformat. It gives the Format SD card, then erase everything, and then back to SD & phone storage immediately. Mount SD card does nothing. When I reboot, I get SD card safe to remove. I am running amon_RA (RA-evo-v1.7.0.2) recovery, Burnt Droid 1.0. Nothing in recovery that accesses the SDcard works. I do not have a card reader. Cannot access the SDcard from anything. I am thinking about returning to stock and taking to Sprint for them to format card. Any ideas before I do this?
I am trying to figure out how to remove the ext partition on my sd card. I am using Amon_RA 1.8. I do not see the partition when I plug in my phone as "Disk Drive", but my 8gb sd is showing up as 6.2gb total storage. I still have more than half of it available, but I am trying to backup and re-format the sd.
Thanks.

in recovery select partition or something like that, then set swap and ext3 to 0mb. this will remove those partitions, will also wipe out your sd card too.

Thanks. I plan on backing up the sd and reformatting it anyway, so wiping out the data on the card isn't a problem.
Just another quick question though... If I want to start with a completely fresh card, can I just put my music folder, Ti Backup folder and zips on the freshly formatted card, or would I have to reload all the folders from before the format?
After flashing a few different ROMs, some of them install their own app folders and folders associated with some of the apps they include, that I no longer need. I don't want to remove anything that IS needed though.
Ive tried to search the forums but cant seem to find the answer.
I wonder if I can safe format my sd card without ruining my DHD
I wonder what happens when SD card is upgraded to a higher capacity one. Is there a way to migrate existing data? Not sure what filesystem it uses either...
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
you can do this on your DHD, go to setting, SD & phone storage, unmount SD card and then you have option to format sdcard. this will fully wipe sdcard and format to fat32 filesystem.
you can format from pc as well, just unmount sdcard, right click on sdcard from pc ,an this you the format option, again format to fat32. only thing is on windows if you have a sd-ext partiton (ext3 or ext4) on sdcard, windows does not see it and won't format this partiton
and the no problem with saving your files on to pc,then formatting and putting those files back on again.
That sounds great. Data migration via PC should be easy. Here I was suspecting they'd somehow lock the content on the SD card.

Nah, they could not risk the case that if one's SD breaks, it would break the whole device
I want to format (delete) my internal SD. Will this delete my current ROM? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks for any help...
Make sure you back up your info onto your computer. Your from is already installed as a daily driver. So if you format your internal memory, it will still be operational. But if you go into CWM and factory reset, then it may go back to stock or just be stuck in a boot loop, I've had both things happen to me.
So what if I were just to hook up to pc & delete all files on that drive? Would that be better?
I do that so I could have control and better view of my files. So that is a decent option to do too.
In CWM, go to mounts & storage, and then you can format whatever. The internal sd is called sd card, and external sd card is called emmc, pretty sure.

This info is correct. This is the other route you could go also to format your internal SD card.
Okay, so I am planning to get a 16gb micro sd card but my phone is rooted with CyanogenMod. - new version 7.2
Do I have to change anything on the root if I put a new micro sd in?????

Some of your data is on the old card especially if you have an sd-ext and swap partition. So:
With the Old Card Still in:
1) Reboot into Recovery
2) Do a full backup (especially if you have an sd-ext partition, clockwordmod or 4EXT can handle this easily for you)
3) Start up USB toggle mode, and copy everything that shows up on your card over to your computer.
4) eject and turn off USB
5) Power off the phone
With the New Card in:
1) Boot into Recovery
2) Format the SD card with the same swap/sd-ext sizes you were using before.
3) Start up USB Toggle
4) Copy back your data from your desktop
5) Do a full wipe (system/data/cache/dalvik)
6) Restore backup from your card (which should also restore sd-ext data as well)
Reboot the phone, you should now have it the same as before with any sd-ext data restored to the new card, and the new larger capacity FAT32 space.
If you do not use swap nor sd-ext partition at all currently, you can simply copy all the files off the old card and onto the new one, just do so with the phone off in case the phone is saving any data to the /android/data/ folder(s), though I'd still recommend using least sd-ext partition with CM7.2
What If I just copy the files to my computer and transfer
it into the new micro SD

Well you could, but I think you'll have the best luck letting the phone format the card first. And only if you're not using a swap or sd-ext partition on your previous card (because if you are then you'll actually need to follow the steps I mentioned).
When I switched cards I just powered off the phone, removed the old card and inserted it into my PC. Copied all the files to my desktop. Inserted my new card to my PC, formatted using SD card Formatter, and copied all my files to the new micro SD. Put the new card in the phone. Done.
and as kbeezie mentioned that will be fine unless you want to restore anything that is on your ext partition. if you dont have one then no worries if you do you computer wont read the ext file extension and those files wont transfer over. you can back up just the ext partition if you want and restore just the ext partition via recovery
