Thought I'd show some pictures of my DIY Travel case.
I already have the MOFI Kangaroo Pouch but wanted some extra protection when carrying it in a backpack or on a plane to protect the screen.
Parts needed.
- Aluminium drop saw
- 8mm drill
- 6mm Aluminium
- Black anodized 2mm Aluminium
- Loctite 480 glue
- Printable sticker for Android label.
Basically I cut the aluminium to just fit around the phone while it was in the Mofi case.
Drilled the 8mm holes around the sides and end of the case to save some weight + it looks good.
Glued it together with Loctite 480 Glue.
Lots of filing and sanding.
Android logo from Google images - print out and stick on case.
The case is about 20grams more than an Iphone 4.
I had all the bits laying around at home so I didn't even have to buy anything.
What do you think?
I haven't tried running it over with a car but I think it's up for the job.
Srrry 2x post
In one word "Beautiful" !
If you could make more, i think you could sell a lot of those.
I would buy one ( without the sticker ).
Awesome

Excellent stuff indeed my friend you should make a few of these and sell them to XDA members for €15 and €25 everywhere else i estimate you'll sell a few dozen to start off with, ill definitely take one with the Android sticker
Bump - anyone else interested in having one of these?
HECK YEAH! I'd love one of these
Depends on postage though.
I want also one with Sticker.

Does it come with the pouch?
I could be interested in one, I suppose - depending on cost and freight of course.
How does it keep from falling out? And, how much does it weigh?

WOW that looks great. I want one of those for my hard drive as well
I would be up to buy one!
Yeah, you should really start selling them
It's so cute! How to make it? I like it very much!
Me also!

Ebay is your friend

Dont buy the chrome or metal plated ones if you dont want to lose reception. My chrome red loses my wifi from 10-15feet away from my router. My metal loses 4g completely and can barely hold onto a 3g connection. If you dont mind the reception loss check out amazons bestmatch. They seem to have a decent amount of colors and the quality isnt bad for the price.
I bought this one - I'm really happy with it (I had a carbon Skinomi skin on my Epic 4G Touch - you might check out skins also):

It fits really well (snaps on tighter than the factory door, in fact), and the sides are blue.
I also like that it leaves the camera lens slightly recessed. No problems with my TPU case fitting, seems to be stock dimensions... although the lens is better protected.
Note also, a few of the pictures show a wood grain one... I bet that one would look sharp also. There's an Amazon listing for that one as well.
are there any other ones available elsewhere besides ebay?

Your best bet would be to contact someone at colorwarepc and explain to them what exactly you want done. Theyll be glad to help you out and give you a quote on a custom paint job. The more intricate the detailing obviously, the more expensive it'll be.
They do great work. Used them for years when i used to build custom pcs. Take a look at some of their color selection while your there. May give you some design inspiration.

Does anyone who has owned this case for a bit have any opinion on it? How is the quality and such?

No protection for the bottom part of the tablet. Closing the case does not ensure the screen is actually protected as the part the screen is covered with can slide off of it. Dumped it quickly.

I do agree with some of the comments above however it is my case of choice. I sold a quality noreve leather case and stuck with the original Samsung book cover case as my daily driver with a solution to full protection using another protective case along with it.

You compromise portability by using two of those together. Check the one that was made by Samsung for Galaxy Tab 10.1 with a flap over the bottom part of the device and see how you could avoid using two cases instead of one.
Thank you for your feedback! Where do you get the fancy pen? I really like the thin form of the case. Can see it really well in your pictures.

Yes indeed it was a compromise however the weight of the two together was roughly the same as the leather case I had so for me did not matter. This setup gives me reassuarnce that even after a hard drop, the tablet should be safe whilst transporting as it is whilst on the move, that I am more likely to drop it. Once it it is in the office or at home, it is kept on the desk or on my bed without much risk of dropping and then I have the lightest and practical cover for my specific needs.
I have also purchased another bag that has a secure slot for any 10" tablet with padding around it and is used when I need to carry more than just my tablet with me and similarly when I take the tablet out, it is usually at a desk, this also eliminates the need for me to carry the second housing.
At the time of me buying my case, the one with the securing flap was not available otherwise I probably would have purchased that one instead. Having said that, I still probably would have bought a secondary case for transporting as the Samsung ones are too thin for real protection but are the most practical in my opinion.
The moral here is, if you are considering buying one of these thin cases, it is advisable to consider a second protective case or buy a fully protective leather / pu case that is adequately padded with the downside of it making the tablet feel a lot heavier.

I currently have the White GALAXY Note 10.1, and I had a faux leather case (generic) from Amazon, and gave it about 2 months of use.
After that I decided to risk my money and bet on the official book cover (in white, as well).
I must say it is extremely durable and gorgeous. It has, somehow, a corporate look, it's extremely thin and the back is well protected.
The cover, on the insides, has a thin and soft veil-like texture, and it sort of acts as a screen cleaner, each time you lift up the front part of the cover. (only applies to naked screen).
All in all, it's durable, I have the white for 2 months now and it's still the same pristine white as it was when it came in the box.
It's resistant and the writing position just works (no Steve Jobs quote intended).
If you have doubts, well, I recommend it!
official Samsung case is good looking, nice design, ****y quality and protection - mine is getting bubless by time on margins - squeezing it does remove them but wtf?! I recommend looking for something else !
I have been using the case for abouta week. I also havea screen protector on the tablet.
pros:
Very light weight
Feels good
Offers several viewing angles, when it works. See cons
Cons:
Magnets are not very strong and don't always hold it in the more up upright position.
Does not positively close, so it can expose your screen in a bag or back pack..
That said, I've been trying other solutions and none seem quite right. I have a gel case thatI bought to bulk up the tab to fit in a cheap cardboard folio usb keyboard case I have left over from another tablet. Although not very elegant, I thinkI will use it for travel as I can use the keyboard on airplanes, it provides extra protection, andI can remove three tablet with the gel case for just walking around. Just need a sturdy OTG and this set up is still less expensive than the official Samsung cover, unless you snag one of the 34.00$ deals from Amazon.
I've also tried the BT keyboard cover. Someone just needs to make one, who had actually useda tablet. Put the same clips in both sides so you don't have one that interferes with the space bar, make the shift and cap keys smaller so the keys can geta bit bigger and fall under you fingers, providea deeper trough so the tab is steadier and the back rest can be redesigned to help with that. I'm sure ZAGG will figure it out.
Finally because of the cons of the Samsung, I am thinking of ordering one of the knock offs that has the flap that closes on the back like the one for the tab10. I think I've seen it where the while thing, flap included, rolls like the iPad cover.
Finally, Samsung needs to work out the magnet thing, offer a smart cover, which should at least be possible with the phone variants.
I guess the simple answer to you question is mixed feelings about the official cover.

I ordered two knockoffs for wife and I. When it gets in from China, official covers go back to Best Buy. They offer virtually no protection and are so not worth the $50 each I paid for two.
I have a question to book cover owners: is it possible to rest your wrist on the tablet while taking notes when book cover is in the position like on the attached screen shot? Or your hand is to heavy and you and the magnet will slip of the back?
I would say that that position is ideal for typing and not the best position for resting the palm on especially if you are heavy handed as it's not really designed for taking heavy loads.

That's not good to hear - that case was next on my shopping list :/
I'm looking for a case that could handle my wrist when taking notes in a position like on the previous screen shoot, probably I will take a look at this one: puro case unfortunately it looks like no one from xda forums is using this one :/
One thing I notice with this case is that it does not cover the camera. I really like that. If you pick it up please review it!

This case does in fact cover the camera when folded back.
Does it? Do you have a picture of that?

I can confirm that yes when the case is folded the back camera is covered. In order to take a picture with back camera you would need to hold up the flap while pushing the on screen capture. Not as difficult as it sounds but you look stupid doing it. I mean if your taking pictures in public with your tablet you look like a tool already so it shouldn't bother you to much. Ill get a picture on here soon.

Does anyone with an OGP in a hybrid kickstand style case (or something of similar size), have a 3D printer?
I'm looking to get a 3D printing of the phone in the case, so I can make an attempt at producing one or possibly many high quality belt holsters for this phone.
I cannot just use my own phone and case as there would be high humidity and high pressure involved. A plastic printing would allow me to "bone" or mold the leather for a precise fit.
I'm tired of the run of the mill cheap quality cases that abound on Amazon. After a few months, they all seem to start to fall apart!!! My amazon case had the belt clip break off after about 3 months. It was an extremely thin piece of rusted metal inside a material that I don't even think was leather. The leather(?) belt loops are at the point of failure as I write this.
I'd like to make a real leather case, with a quality belt clip that won't accidentally fall off your belt. I'd also put on some belt loops for some added stability on the belt (if needed). I'd most likely use a pair of neodymium magnets for the closure.
I cannot get started on the project until I have a "replica" that I can start working around, and a 3D printing seems like it would be the most accurate.
So, if anyone can help me out it would be appreciated!!! Just let me know the cost involved in making the "replica", as I have no clue as to the costs of 3D printing materials.
FYI...I have many many years experience in making/tooling/carving leather gun holsters, wallets, handbags, sandals, etc...
Thanks,
Andy
I have the Diablo case from jkase as well as access to a makerbot that we use to make parts for things in our lab (or just to play ). I would be happy to help out, but the main time consuming part is constructing an accurate 3d model of the phone and case. I can see if I ever have a bit of time to put one together, but since I don't do that often, it will take a while (I made a case for my lgog that I had before getting the ogp and giving it to my wife). I had been hoping to make a front cover to attach to my Diablo case and embed a magnet in it so it would work as a folio case, so if a 3d model can be made, that would help that project too.
I know someone a while back had been wanting a model made of the phone so they could print a case, but I don't remember who. I'll look back through the threads and see if they had any luck.

Hey all!
This is just an idea, I really like the many skins that we can get, but they're not easily available here in India, and even if they are, they take too long to deliver I'm reading. So I had a simple idea, as there are so many DIYers around here.
Why not take a generic eBay TPU case that sells for $1-3 and cutout the nexus logo on the back? If someone can find a way to make fairly precise cutouts, it would be awesome! Using a laser cutter or some other method. Then this could be filled with transparent plastic melted, or a different colored moulding plastic or something so that it becomes see through or a different color to the case!
What do you guys think? Has anyone tried this? I'm posting a pic of a cheap case I have and was thinking of doing this. But I have no idea how to proceed.
sorry forgot to post the image
bump bump. anyone?
I would probably cut it with a razor blade that I held under a flame for a minute or so and cut from the inside... But I doubt there's a way to connect another color nicely

Cut a hole much smaller than what you want around where the nexus label is, put the case on, then mark it according to how you see through the hole. Afterwards just cut and erase... was the clear or confusing?
The cost to operate a CNC laser is way too much money to spend on a 99 cent case made of TPU. You might as well buy the official google case and save a lot of money.
As for filling the cut out with a clear plastic, it's not easy, but do-able. You need a plaster mold of the original case before being cut, and you need clear silicone to fill it in with. Unfortunately with the material difference of TPU and Silicone, the nexus logo would just fall out. I've worked with both materials before on projects at work, and they do not play well together. Realistically you'd need the case to be molded with the clear TPU nexus logo seconds after the main case itself has been casted, both colors of plastic will then cool together and be solid.

oh that sounds much harder than i imagined. I'll just try making a cutout then!
i have a cheep s-line case for the n5 which i dont need anymore, i think i'll maybe try some things.
use a piece of paper to outline the nexus logo like this
and then try your best to align it on your case to cut it out.
maybe you can shade in the camera to help with the alignment too.
There are photo developing chemicals used by people who screen print shirts that might help... most craft stores have them, might be an easy way to chemically etch the case ( you could cut afterward if you wanted
