What would cause my phone to stop being able to connect to WiFi? A radio problem? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cannot connect to WiFi at home anymore. It just says connecting... disconnecting... searching... connecting... disconnecting... searching... over and over.
I've installed several ROMs to try to fix it, but it is true across the board, which leads me to believe that this is a radio problem. Is that correct?
However, I have the latest radio, as posted on this thread.
My radio is 2.15.00.11.19
My PRI is 1.90_003
So... what do I do?
Thank you in advance for any help, hive mind! I will contribute later...
Later.

Are you certain your passphrase, if any, is typed in correctly? Try removing the encryption from your router/wap and then see if you can connect. If you are able to connect then you will know that the encryption passphrase did not match. By the way, which rom are you currently using and what kernel. Changing to a different kernel can sometimes help.

Thanks. I am positive the passphrase is correct, because I double-checked by re-connecting my wireless printer and an iPad.
I currently have the leaked stock 2.3.3 rom installed.
You think installing another kernel could help? I might try to do that.

I've flashed that same rom the day it was leaked and everything worked so yes, switch kernels and see if it helps. Try something like Netarchy 4.3.2 noHAVs noSBC noUV.

But out of curiosity, what is it that connects to WiFi?
Is it the radio? PRI? Wimax? What is the piece of software that does it?
Thanks all.

Wireless Tether

Please help! All suggestions are welcome.
After flashing OMJ's 2.2 ROM on the first day of its release (knowing that wireless tether would not work), something has been preventing wireless tether from working in all ROMS.
I have tried everything I know (which is not much)... different combos of radios and wimaxes, several different ROMs (based off both 1.3x and 1.4x), different kernels... nothing can get it working.
I am guessing that there may be data somewhere that did not get wiped through recovery or through doing my nand restore.
Thanks!
There are a couple different updates for the Wireless Tether app floating around. Versions 2.0.5 pre 4, pre 5, and pre 6. I've had success with all of them varying by rom. Can't post the links right now, but some of the rom threads have them posted in the OP. You'll probably have to try each one til you find the one that works. One of them should.
[EDIT] I think there's a pre 7 also.

wireless hotspot for 3g works fine on cm6. it's a 2.2 aosp rom. no sense. don't ask about including sense. won't happen. 4g currently doesn't work, and i'm not sure that a 4g hotspot will, because sprint's implementing a MAC confirmation with 4g hotspot (they really wanna charge you 30 bucks a month for it).
but, 3g hotspot works fine on cm6 2.2. that's my point. that's all there is, don't ask for more.
other roms have 4g functioning, so i'd assume 4g hotspot works on those, if you pay for it.

I know pre7 works on my ROM and most other Froyo ROMs.
Pre7 only works on the HTC stock kernels iirc. If you're using an oc kernel please try the other versions listed of it doesn't work for you

yea the pre 7 works, you can jus google it like i did
sorry that I did not make this clearer in the original post but I have indeed tried all of the different wireless apps (including pre 7) with a variety of ROMs and nothing is working.
The problem I am focusing on is that I originally had wireless tether working on fresh 1.01 (based off 1.47), I created a nand backup, flashed OMJ's 2.2 ROM, then when I restored back to the Fresh ROM my wireless tether was kaput.
None of the combinations of different version of the app, ROM, kernel, radio, and wimax (and I have probably tried 50+ unique combinations over the past week) have provided any working results.
I even went through the entire ROOT process again, and still nothing is working.
EDIT: What I'm trying to emphasize here is that once I flashed a 2.2 ROM wireless tether stopped working on ALL ROMs... even the 1.3x and 1.4x based ROMs
I have the same problem... the program starts just fine but the download data amount gets stuck at . 4 and my laptop can't find the connection at all. Had OJ Rom and now running latest version of fresh... please help!

biggity bump
Well I installed the pre-8 version of wireless tether and it worked one night and then I had the same problem... I'm using easy tether now until I can get this thing working again. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Two weeks later and I still have not solved this... any help?
Wireless Tether is working fine for me.Fresh 3.0.1 w/Netarchy Kernel 4.0.3 and pre-8 tether .apk

I understand that for nearly everybody wireless tether IS working. However, given the ludicrous number of combinations I have tried, including everybody's latest and greatest app/ROM/kernel it is safe to say that my problem does not lie in the use of something out of date.
I need NEW suggestions from someone way more experienced than myself.
pretty weird - mine has worked on every rom I've tried.
have you tried CM6?
Also where exactly are you getting stuck?
im having the same problem tried pre 8 now 7 both say activating wifi interface failed, starting access point -failed,
Tether working fine, except I can't watch espn videos for some reason.

try this maybe
Had the issue after running ava v3.
Wipe everything, data cash, dalvik. Dont flash your previous radios or wimaxs, they arent for froyo. Once everything is wiped flash your new rom. Evio 1.1 works great. When you open wifi tether, it should ask you for user permission, if it doesnt somethig is wrong with your su app.
We need more details about your issue. Otherwise all anyone can suggest is wipe everything and flash another rom and try runnig the app. Or like someone else suggested uninstall and reinstall verious versions. But the first time you run wifi tether super user should pop up, if it doesnt this is what is preventing u from running wifi tether.
I'm sorry I did not specify exactly what was happening, but I thought that since this was a well known error for the early adopters of 2.2 people would be familiar with the nature of my problem.
When I put ANY rom on my evo (regardless of whether it's 2.1 based or 2.2) my wireless tether program does not send data. The app itself works fine (gets SU request), creates a network, it just doesn't transmit data because of the authentication Sprint worked into froyo.
My UNIQUE problem, is that this problem persists even when not using those early 2.2 roms. I have tried HUNDREDS of variations of radios/wimax/app editions/ROMs/kernels (including the latest releases) and it does not matter what I do, when I start up wireless tether it stops at .4kb and will not transmit the connection to my computer.
I have gone beyond wiping all of my data (through amon recovery), I even went back tot he 1.3x RUU and went through the whole root process AGAIN and still the problem persists.
There is something on this phone that the data wipes are not removing that is blocking this function, and I do not know how to revert it back. PLEASE HELP.
ive got mine working but its alot slower then even dialup..tried 7 and 8 and same results with both.. Tried on the AC rom and a stock rooted here (using a stock rooted off this forum which the op says works fine for him ...

Issues connecting to 4g/Wimax

I partially solved my issue in another thread, but still cannot connect to 4g. I had initially thought my RSA key was gone, but was able to find it in an old nandroid and reflash it. KeyChecker now says my Key is Ok. I verified my MAC address is correct and have flashed the most recent wimax radio. I have also updated my profile and prl. However, I still cannot connect to 4G. I was in Minneapolis in a strong 4g area and turned on the 4g. It turns on, scans, says connecting to sprint, and then quickly returns back to scanning, finds sprint, tries to connect, then scans again. I tried this is multiple spots all over the city but still couldn't connect. I am running Fresh 3.5 with the stock kernel and have connected to 4g in the past prior to temporarily losing my keys. I have flashed different sense and aosp roms with the same result. Someone please help! I am stuck! I would like avoid unrooting if at all possible, but will if that is a last resort.
I would call Sprint tech support and see if they could do anything from their end. You can try changing kernels or flashing a rooted stock rom to see if the problem gets corrected. For a rooted stock rom, download this and flash from recovery after doing a full wipe. Make a nandroid backup of your current setup first.

OK, Sprint was no help. As of now, my wimax key is intact and Mac address correct. If I am on Fresh rom 3.5 and turn on 4g in a solid 4g area, it turns on, scans, finds Sprint, then disconnects, over and over, never really connecting. Any other Rom I have tried, both sense and aosp, 4g won't even turn on, it just gets stuck at "turning on". I have also tried different kernels. I don't know what else to do. I upgraded my radios and profiles, would downgrading do anything?

I'm experiencing the same problem as you. Every since yesterday afternoon, I can't connect to 4G. It scans...connecting to Sprint.....scanning..etc. I never lost my keys though.

Same exact thing here. Took me hours to figure it out but here's what I did..total pain in the arse! I basically updated radios in succession. I loaded an old Sprintlovers PC36IMG.zip that had all the old radios (pri 1.77). After that I updated radios again, pri 1.90. Loaded up my Dark EVO 2.2 ROM, made sure 4G was working. Then while in recovery I flashed Caulkins .zip with all of the newest radios, loaded CM7, loaded GAPPS and BAM...everything is working great....total pain and probably a lot of unnecessary steps, but it worked!
As an update, I ran wimax_ mtd in terminal and it ran through fine, everything passed and was OK, except next to "check firmware file" it says not match and next to "verify app fireware key" it says not match. Any ideas what that means?? Can you give me exact details with file links to how you fixed yours?

I have also verified that i have my rsa key using the app wimax key checker. However when ever i try to connect the phone says connecting and then disconnects right away. Does anyone have any ideas to fix this?
running: cm7 stable release with tiamat kernel
I have also tried flashing back to a sense rom updated the profile and prl and then did a data restore with ##3282# and still no luck

I'm guessing you were using Clockwork and it was talking about the zip being unsupported etc etc. Use RA and you should be fine.
thank you for suggestion i wil try to reflash my rom and start from stratch and report back if that helps......has anyone had any problems with the most recent wimax radios?

Problem with WiFi

I cannot connect to WiFi. It just keeps cycling through connecting, scanning, disconnected. I tried doing a full wipe and reflashing the Rom but its still doing the same thing. I'm running the newest version of virus's kingdom rom, I believe it is version 1.03. I was running the Rom for 3 days with WiFi running fine, so I know its not the Rom or the Rom download. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff

Im using 2.6.35.10-g4e39384 [email protected] #1 Wed May 4
Does that help?
I haven't seen any complaints with that kernel causing WiFi problems, but try flashing a different kernel to see if it rectifies the problem.

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but have you confirmed that there actually is a Wifi signal where you're checking? And that other devices can connect to it?

Need lots more info, I assume you are rooted as you say you have tried all ROMs, can you clarify, ROMs based of 2.2 and 2.3 and 4.x ? Have you tried different radios, have you attempted to go back to stock fully? Have you checked if its hardware related maybe bad connection @ WiFi antenna? Do you when this started? Have you tried different modems or does your phone not see any? Please give as much info as possible if you want accurate help
