I recently just cracked my phone's screen (thank god I have insurance) and I'm going to get a new phone. But, before I go to verizon I need to know a few things.
1. Should I bother un-rooting my phone? I currently have a stock ROM flashed, but do you think I'll need to un-root?
2. Are there any back-up apps that work for un-rooted phones? I don't plan on flashing my new Incredible, so is there a way I can restore my messages at the least? I don't really care about the app data.
I would highly recommend unrooting...just in case they do decide to check..better safe then sorry.
My backup pro can backup messages, contacts, etc w/o root access.

I have my contacts linked with my G-Mail account so that's fine, and I just downloaded some app to back up messages. Thanks for all the help!
Does anyone know if it's over night shipping or how this process is going to work?

For me, Verizon has done overnight shipping. Tell em you use your phone for personal and somewhat business use. YOU NEED YOUR PHONE. They will get it to ya.

do a nandroid backup, copy it off the sdcard, put sdcard in the new phone and verify correct radio, recovery, etc and then restore the backup.
wouldnt that work?
also, if text messges are that important, i know there is an app that will send all your SMS messages to your gmail account as a backup, might be called smsbackup.
If the phone with shattered screen is still functional, which is usually the case, there are sms backup apps in the market. I use SMS Backup and Restore. It backs them up on your SD card. Install the same app on your new phone and restore your text messages.

There's an app called mybackup, free version expires in 30 days but that's ok. You can backup your texts online - that might make it easier to get it to the new phone - no need to swap sdcards.

Hola lads and lasses,
So I originally set my Epic up on my personal gmail account. Four months later I'd like to move over to my GApps account but in order to remove the gmail it's saying I have to return the phone to factory default. A couple questions. Really? I can't just switch and keep both? Why (or is that moot)? Next question: what's going to happen, what am I going to lose? How should I prepare (I already moved all contacts over to the GApps acct)? Anything else to consider? I have not rooted but will if I must.
Thanks!
T
I never tried but can't you add the second account and switch it to default first?

My guess is to help prevent app sharing.
Me and my g/f both have android devices. We both got a different set of paid apps. I've tried logging in to her account to get her apps but experienced the same problem.

Good question. How do you set a default profile? I don't see that setting anywhere.
I'm not one to be giving advice here, but I am kinda in the same boat. I have a samsung moment on cricket I bought from craigs that has the last owners gmail account on it. I cant reset the phone as from what I heard ill lose the flash. Ne way, from what I read and gathered, but have not tried yet, is to z4root, then download titanium backup, remove gmail app from phone with tb, then download the gmail app from the market. Then log in and it should re ask for an account. I'm gonna do it tommorow and I can let you know if it worked or not.
Don't know I was guessing (hoping for you) lol. Like I said never tried it but the way they word it when you try to delete the main account that's what it sound like. I came across that when I sold my moment so the reset was gonna happen any way

So what's the verdict GB? Did it work? What did you lose (if anything)?
i gotta go see sprint, i have ins. and rooted but i just odin back to complete stock. no longer rooted but if they simply went into my market, they would see how ive purchased apps like root explorer and titanium back up and setcpu. will i now be turned away because they saw i was obviously rooted? can i fix this, maybe delete my google account or something?
side question, how can i restore data (contacts and calendar) without root? i did TB and CWM backups before i odin but dont see any backup and restore options in three finger boot,
They're not putting you on trial, they aren't going to go out of their way to look for evidence of root. If you're on the stock rom, theme, boot animation and recovery they won't know anything.
Factory reset and don't associate your device with a Google account. Or create a new account and link it to your phone so that nothing syncs up (primarily the market apps).
Or use Titanium Backup Pro to "unlink" those apps from the market, then uninstall TB.
Though I suppose that having apps which require root does't mean that you are in fact rooted. The ignorance defence should be adequate here, but why risk it?
Tell them you use that same account for your tablet..
thanks guys! i didnt even think of that quick! thats a great idea. im going to create a second google account. it will be the one ill use and log in on my phone for those times i need to go in.
may require a lil work at first but will be worth it in the end. ill download a few games and what not for that account, tweak it a bit but when i dont plan to see sprint any time soon ill go back to running my main google account. with all the rooted apps logged. ill see if this works.
can contacts be saved to my computer via usb? i returned to my old set up atm, rooted and all so i can try to save my contacts somewhere else to bring back after i odin again. although this is all a b*tch, im learning a lot

Correct me if I am wrong they can't look at market apps because this not a sprint market it is a droid market nothing is linked!

update: i got to sprint today. they replaced my whole screen whoo hoo!! my boyfriend talked to them, im deaf or well, speech impaired (i can hear noise but cant distinguish speech so i lip read) anyways, im SO glad i created a second gmail account! they asked for my google password, i didnt find out till later that they needed this to sync my contacts just in case? why would u need a password if my google account is already set into my phone? either way, who knows if they looked at apps but no trace of my rooted ones. others may want to try this second google account thing, just in case. all worked out and re rooted and restored my yesterdays SRF rom and good to go

I have actually had sprint in store techs reboot my phone back to stock for me.....they *****ed a little bit cuz they were having issues w/there computer taking my phone....but that was it!

I used to use SMS backup plus to save texts from the ex wife to my gmail account. On my OG EVO it worked perfect. With the LG Optimus G it doesn't save incoming texts to my gmail account, only outbound. First, does anyone know a fix for this?
If there is no fix, can anyone suggest another app that will backup texts to my gmail? Currently, I'm using the stock messaging app, but not opposed to a 3rd party app like go sms pro. As long as I can specify which thread to backup to my gmail. Would like it to have a nice popup option too when the screen if off (like SMS Popup), but that is just a nice option not needed.
I like to backup these texts from her in case she decides to try some funny court stuff, or doesn't remember agreeing to something related to our child. It's a safety measure.
Thanks.
I have been using that app with success, it backs up inbound and outbound in order on my gmail... Thats weird, what rom are you on?

I have used this and it works.
My personal recommendation is Google Voice. While it doesn't restore messages to your phone, it will keep a record of every single text message sent/received that can also be accessed online.
As a tech, SMS Backup is a nightmare. I can't count the number of times a phone has come in with thousands of text messages (the record is 43K messages) that barely boots because of it.
The customer has SMS Backup installed and after we spend the time doing a hard reset they then restore the text messages. Now all that time was wasted as the phone needs to be hard reset yet again and it's somehow our fault. In some cases where there is a tin of messages, SMS Backup corrupts messages and messaging app data.
Now that I've given my $0.02, if you are going to use a backup app, try "Super Backup". It's backups are very similar to the Cellebrite machine that we techs use to backup contacts and text messages. I've even been able to restore messages on the Cellebrite using a "Super Backup" SMS backup file.
From the Super Backup thread;
"You can backup apps & contacts & SMS & Call logs & Bookmarks & Calendars to the SD Card or Gmail."
Now before you say Titanium Backup. Try to run Titanium Backup without root. You can't. Super Backup only needs and checks for root if you try backing up your apps.

That is the app that isn't backing up my incoming messages.
Since a few of you aren't having any issues with it, what settings are being used? As I said before, I had no issues on my evo 4g but doesn't want to save those texts from her with the LG.
I have no reason or desire to restore these texts back onto my phone. I just want them backed up to my gmail like sms backup + does, just in case I need them to cover myself.

Never thought of using google voice that way. I guess it might be time to integrate voice with my sprint number soon then. Does it put the sms into gmail in a similar way that sms backup plus does?
I find it funny as I just went through some of those backup, and it did backup some incoming texts when I first got the phone. It just hasn't been working right since right before x-mas. I have now installed an older version of the app to see if that might work. If not I will look more into google voice. I already have gvoice but never really used it.
You will go to google.com/voice and login and there will be a text message label with all of them, it does work very well for that

I'm not spying on my ex wife. I don't care what she is doing or up to. Just keeping a record of our conversations since we have a kid together and I'm sure she is doing the same thing. This is only for covering myself if we ever end up in court again.
Point is that the app isn't working. Still trying to figure out why.

I did before I started this thread, but haven't heard back yet. I might have figured it out in a round about way. Testing it now, but it seems to save both outgoing and incoming when I tell it to backup everyone and not just a specific group.

Hi all,
So I've got a One right now that I will be exchanging for an unlocked One soon, however I will not have overlapping possession of the devices. I would like to hear a bit about my backup options on Android. My main concern is transferring contacts over to the new One, as that's the only real data that would be a pain to lose.
I have read a bit about abd backup but I'm not positive as to whether or not this will cause problems with the rooted device as it is more of a "full" backup and recovery.
Is there a simpler/leaner option that would preserve the rooted device with little hassle?
As long as you have your contacts synced with Gmail you'll never lose them (they auto-restore when you sign into your account)
Oh and as far as backup options... I've always used Titanium backup which can pretty much do anything you want and I'd assume all you'd need to do would be to transfer the backup files onto your computer, then onto the new phone and restore them

Accept they he won't be able to use Titanium since he's not rooted yet.
But as Crawshayi mentioned - as long as you are saving your contacts as Google contacts your new phone will automatically repopulate them.
I am curious as to why someone is trading you their unlocked phone for your locked phone. If this is not a personal friend that you trust please make sure to call Verizon and check the phones iemi number. Or whatever that number is called. I never get the right letters in the right order.
