Heya - title pretty much says it all - have an AT&T Galaxy SIII and was seriously considering moving to T-Mobile because of the new unlimited data plan they were going to start offering on 9/5. I had also looked through the T-Mobile GSIII Q&A forum, but could only find questions of the situation the other way around, i.e. T-Mob GSIII phone on AT&T network.
Basically, was wondering:
- is there a hardware limitation that APN settings and/or installing a new modem will not get me good data speeds?
- would I just need to burn a new T-Mobile modem? Or, is it more involved?
- I'm assuming at minimum I'd need new APN settings, and am assuming T-Mobile would be able to help with that. Right?
Thanks, really interested in being able to do this! (if it's even possible...)
Look in the AT&T general forum for the thread title starting with BOUNTY..... didn't read the whole thing so not sure if its possible yet.
crrrap, looks like there's a hardware limitation. thanks for the lead!

thats still more then Tmo, even if you dont use more then 4gb. Tmo is still cheeper. hope that Verizon and AT&T see that they might not be able to keep that expensive shared stuff with other guys lurking around.
Unfortunately, it's the unlimited data that is the real desire for me. I don't do much talking or texting, but I do love streaming videos with Neflix while I'm on the elliptical at the gym, streaming internet radio while I'm out-and-about, etc.. Thing is, on my 2GB plan, that's only about 2-3 movies and then it's gone! Going from 2-3 to 4-6 isn't much of an improvement. :crying:
Since AT&T only costs me about $60/mo (taxes&fees included), I have no good reason to switch anywhere, and I'm stuck in my renewed contract unti Jan 1st, 2014 anyway.
(My 2011 monthly average was $69/mo though, with overages factored in)

I just jumped from T-Mobile to ATT. While the unlimited data is nice as you don't have to worry about overages there is a catch. Once you hit your 2 GB limit your data is heavily throttled. So even though you have 'unlimited' data you may not be able to watch movies after you hit 2 GB.
I ended up switching to ATT because T-Mobile's data speeds in my area (Minneapolis) suck... Then if I were to hit my 2 GB limit my internet would slow to a crawl.

I have the AT&T unlimited, it was 3Gb with 3G and 5Gb with 4G, then they would throttle data! but I think I read that the new TMo unlilmited is unlimited with no throttleing
I was curious about differences between data plans. I'm grandfathered in to unlimited data and I've heard that they will throttle your data speed if your in the top nth% of bandwidth usage. Is there any way to get an idea of how many gb of data that actually is?
And are there any cases where at&t has taken unlimited data away for abusing it?
I was downloading 700mb ROM on LTE and it took like 60 second which is faster than wifi, but I sure as hell wouldn't do that if I was on a 3gb plan.

Every month that I hit 3GBs of data use, I get throttled. I have been told that people grandfathered into the Unlimited Data Plan and using an LTE phone get throttled at 5 GBs of data usage. This will be my first month on LTE, so I guess we will see! Until now I have been on a 3G plan, so I am hoping that it does change it to 5 GB or higher.
I got throttled @ 5GB on LTE about 5 days ago with 12 more days left on my billing cycle
It's actually not that bad being throttled...it's capped to only about 600Mbps. The thing is at network access starts fasts but quickly slows down to 600Mbps. Due to this web browsing, emailing, and messaging doesn't seem any slower as they usually require short/brief network access. What is noticeable is Youtube performance and updating/downloading apps via GooglePlay.

Same I get throttled at 5gbs. I usually hit that around 2 week mark. But u start to see slow speeds when on YouTube downloading etc.

I've read that if you get throttled on the LTE plan @ 5GBs you can switch your APN over to the "4G" (e.g. ATT APN used on the SGH-I777) and you can get highers speeds (not LTE) until you hit 3GBs cap.
Haven't tried it out myself.

You are correct, that's what I do everytime I hit my 5GB limit., just switch to 'phone' APN and change you connection type to not look for LTE. works like a champ.
do a search for the 'phone' APN
I got throttled for the first time this month on the last day before my billing cycle ends (I got the text message a day earlier). I'm on a grandfathered unlimited plan and AT&T reports my data usage at 5.1Gb. The strange thing is that a few days ago, my data was reported to be ~8Gb by AT&T and by my phone. My phone still says ~8Gb, but AT&T now says 5.1Gb. My speed is now around 600Kbps down and 2Mbps up, where it used to be 16Mbps down and 6Mbps up. I haven't tried the APN switch, but I might try it if I get throttled earlier in the month.

You say "600 Mbps" but I really think you mean 600 Kbps. There's a big difference and 600 Kbps is actually painfully slow when you're coming from 8-25 Mbps depending on if you have HSPA, HSPA+ or LTE. My home internet connection is 889 Kbps and it's really slow for downloading large ROMs. So unfortunately I have been quite reluctant to download ROMs from my phone because I don't want to get throttle on my unlimited plan. It looks like I will continue to not go over my 5 Gb soft cap so I won't be throttled. I might as well not have unlimited
Think about this. Yes we get throttled at 5gb. But, we pay the same as a tiered 3gb plan. And even if we hit 5GB, we don't get charged an extra $10 for more data.
I do agree and I'm just nit picking. I consider myself lucky that still have an unlimited plan. My situation may be a bit different than others because my phone is by far the fastest data connection I have. Period. Way faster than my home or my job, so I have a tendency to use it for everything. I feel as though they could give people more data though. I realize that a 'small percentage' use over 5 gb, but I don't see a problem with doubling all the tiered plans including those with grandfathered unlimited plans soft cap. AT&T has a LOT of money.

Everyone that still has unlimited data (including myself) is pretty lucky
I think i may be getting thorttled... what speeds are u guys getting?
They throttled me at the 2gb mark. Called them and *****es them out something fierce. They told me it was because it was I had gone over 2gb in one cycle. I asked them about the past where the website said I had used 17gb. Didn't get throttled then, why now?
Dude couldn't give me an answer. I think the system picked up on my because I sent the *3282# to see what my data usage was.
After I got off the phone with them, researched and forunf the other apn settings to use, no problems thus far. No throttling, no slowdowns. That was with my galaxy note i717.
Not I have a razr xt910, don't bother to check my data and, no throttling.

I got throttled last month. Little after 5 gigs. Too many Rom and large files download testing lte. My speeds were crawling. I had to connect to wifi to download 5+ mb apps. Needless to say, i.use wifi now. Nooo matter how slow it is.

I am currently in a 3G area and still getting great speeds. But I don't need to tether. Gonna have to look up the specifics, see if it's truly unlimited data, or cap'd at 4-5 gb.

Ditto, I want >5Mbps which in my limited neighborhood tests T-Mobile more consistently delivered than all other major carriers both indoors & outdoors to my surprise..(though Verizon did peak higher outdoors)
I'm leaning toward their $30/mo plan..
Well guys, it's not exactly T-Mobile, but it looks to be a new MVNO they have:
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/12/t-mo...tnersupport-new-prepaid-brand-gosmart-mobile/
And it looks like it's $35 for unlimited call, text and web (2G speeds) since for $45 they have unlimited call, text, and high-speed web and it says 3G speeds right under the $45 plan, which means the "web" for the $35 plan will prob be 2G speeds.
I'd go with simple mobile, for $50, you get unlimited voice, text and 4G data (I don't believe there's a cap, but don't quote me on that).
I wish they had a plan for cheaper with 2GB of data, since I rarely use over 2GB... actually I don't think i ever have...

Just google voice itself won't help. Google Voice is a service that will let you connect all your numbers to a central number, then depending on who calls, what time, etc. It will redirect the call to the appropriate number, but that requires you to have a number elsewhere (phone service elsewhere). Now if you combine Google Voice with some VoIP services, which let you make calls over a data connection (hence the IP part), then you essentially never have to or need to make traditional phone calls using minutes, etc.
Cons:
- data always on - more battery used
- set up - no matter how minimal or easy, my phone already has a built in dialer that works
- need to give out Google Voice # or pay $20 and end contract to port existing number to GV
Pros:
- no minutes used
- works anywhere with data connection (even abroad, but so does T-Mobile's Wifi Calling)
Here is the scenario:
There are around 10 of us in my office who have beefed up data plans because we stream all day ER DAY. Instead of us paying $30 each every month, we (actually me) came up with an idea to buy a hotspot for the office, and then split the cost 10 ways. after doing a lot of reasearch as far as prices and data caps and speeds I have come up with the following ideas:
1. Sprint phone with bad ESN flashed to Metro PCS ($60, no 4g LTE)
2. Add an existing T-Mobile line ($60, 10GB soft cap)
3. ???
Assume the device we will be using is a rooted, unlocked Samsung S3. Does anyone have any better ideas? We live in OC California, its 70 degrees outside if that helps.

Hotspot is not unlimited and that's what the OP wants.
OP, in my humble opinion; add a tmobile line for the said GS3 and get the unlimited data plan. There are many ROMs for that phone that support tethering, even thought the plan does not.
OOPS, this was supposed to be in the Q&A sections, can a MOD please move. TY.

I'm currently on a myFaves for Families 1000 plan with 2 lines and I have a grandfathered T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web + 400 Messages. This gets me to $110 and I hardly ever go over on text or calling. Data seems to be unlimited, but I think I only went over 5GB once and there didn't seem to be any slow down.
Does anyone still have the older Android Unlimited Web and is it the equivalent of the $80 Unlimited 4G LTE data simple plan? Is this truely unlimited?
I'm thinking of switching to a simple plan, I travel from time to time for work and would like to take advantage of the Unlimited data & text in 120+ countries & destinations and the hot spot feature. I'll end up spending $10 for $80 unlimited line 1 plus $40 3GB for line 2. Only downside is I will be giving up my grandfathered plan and if I ever leave my company I'll have to pay the extra $10 per month or downgrade to 5GB data. Any advice or ways to bring my monthly cost down? TMO offers $15 off if I change data plans and keep myFaves Family plan, anyway to get a discount on the simple plans?
Finally does anyone have experience using the unlimited data and text overseas?
TIA!
The data overseas is unlimited, but 2g speed.

International Roaming is usable, alot faster then being on Edge here in the states, even though it throttled. Viewing Web pages and emailing, gps, and voip calls worked fine. If you want faster speeds you can always upgrade to a higher speed package.
