Diagnosing the best modem - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey alll..
I am thinking I have a phone that does not prefer ec05's modem. Is there any method or (free) app that can help me move this from observation to some actual data showing that my phone and ec05 are not playing best?
Thanks.
J

Flash the EB13 modem, and if it improves, you found your culprit (but with data problems, it's a near-guarantee it's the modem).

You could use something like this app:
Speedtest.net Mobile (in market and free)
To test what speeds you're getting using EC05 modem (run a few and average them out).
Then odin EB13 modem and run the tests again.
Then you'll have some data to compare.

Thanks for the feedback. I am trying to be more imperical than my perception. My primary concern is not the speed (although maybe that is an issue) but my signal. It seems my wifi drops in parts of the house that were solid before and my 3g seems weak. All I am working off of is the signal bars for now...I was kinda hoping for a logging/reporting thing.
I thought I read that the eb13 did speed improvements and so on. I don't wanna lose anything but I am reading people going all the way back to dk28 and the idea of a beta or rc modem being better makes little sense to me.
Thanks again.

You won't lose anything by flashing the EB13 modem, it's a simple Odin flash.

Thanks again. I know that...just worried about the placebo affect and was hoping to "prove" my observations.
I will probably try it. Thanks.

Edit: Sorry I just got what you meant. In my second posting I was referring to the loss of the enhancements alleged in EC05

There is an app called aLogCat; it logs everything going on with your phone. The logs are pretty large but you can filter the data. Maybe that could help?
I used it to help test some things for devs.

I have played with them all at some point. I haven't found the info I am seeking in logcat so I caant really tell you. One chef is claiming substant5ially better battery life from using dk28 and I have seen some android sensor usage issues reported as resolved from going to eb13. I think the devices are different and different results are happening per device.

I was in love with EG31 for a while, but, EL16 ended up being better in the long run... EL26 didn't impress me so I didn't keep it for more than a couple hours... But given all of the positive responses I'm flashed it and I'm going to "let it settle" for a few days.
... I'm skeptical that "letting it settle" has any effect, but, it seemed to for EL16. Anyone that has any technical explanation (for or against) would be awesome.

I may be crazy... it could all be in my head or just some luck with the GPS process, but since I put on the EL26 stock rom, kernal, and modem (then rooted) it seems like GPS is much better. Satelites synced in few seconds when outside.
Anyone else? I have not applied any of the GPS fix to the stock EL26 yet, may not need too. Have not done any type of testing other than just using navigation and noticing the faster GPS connection (from GPS being completely off too btw).

The gps app is gps status found in the market.
As far as el26 modem for me it was worse. I used it for 2 days and my speeds were half of what el13 was. I was having worse service and some ghost Los where it just wouldn't connect. Still liking calkulins 2.7 but had to revert my modem back to el13.
I wish Sprint would release an OTA update for this already.

just tried this, doesn't work on my phone.
Only thing that works is a reboot which is a hassle everytime i need a GPS lock.
anyone else w/ any suggestions? I'd hate to go back to stock ROM.
Doesn't the GPS continue to work for a few days, before requiring a reboot?
Thats the case with my phone, try different versions of the rooted rom, or radios.

THanks. upon reading a bit of that thread, I found out that through using "GPS Status" I can refresh the "A-GPS" which I didn't know previously.
This seems to work so far.
I'm running the same rom and have no problems with any of my radios, I did also install the EL29 modem when I installed the rom. You may need to try different modems, they work differently on different phones even though you're running the same roms. Also, don't forget to update profile in /settings/about phone/updates

Update if anyone's interested: FB21 modem w/ EL29 Kernel was good but still had GPS locking issues. I was getting roughly 85% locks (which isn't bad since I test often). FAST download speeds though.
So this got me thinking: When my phone was stock, GPS worked brilliantly. It wasn't until I installed a custom rom that it started to have problems. The difference was the kernel and modems.
So now I flashed back to EK02 modem and kernel (still running Calks 2.9.2) and my GPS has been locking 100% of the time. PLUS my phone is silky smoooooth!
Crossing my fingers that this will last....

I have to say I believe fc09 appears more consistant on day 2 of testing! 4g and 3g are more consistant on speeds and much less fluctuation than fb15

It sounds like he has the whole update, not just the modem.
FC09 gave my data speeds a little boost and more consistency as well as made my WiFi speeds jump up a whole 10 Mbps. Very worth the tedious task of collecting files, odining back to EL30, then using the CWM 5.0.2.7 zip to flash the FC09 delta file, even with a 20% chance of possible corruption that would cause me to start the entire process over again.
I'm on FB15 and have been since it leaked....seems like the whole community skipped over it and jumped directly to FC09 tho might jump ship myself soon enough but as of late I've had great 3G speeds and download speeds (could be the 3G Turbo tweak tho) and I never use wifi so.

when you odin just the modem it should be a modem.bin in the phone section of odin I believe. someone else can chime in but for sure. but I had the same problem with the modem.tar for fc09. but if you have to start over just flash the official fc09 or fc19 tar then root and boot.

[DISCUSSION] FG20 Build

This is a thread to discuss the FG20 build for the Boost Mobile version for our phone.
As to my knowledge there are no issues running it on our Epic 4G Touch without of course a simple APN fix to get MMS.
What we've noticed is that its a more polished version of FF18 and what we should have essentially gotten for our phone.
I would like to know your experiences on FG20 and how it's running for you.
And note any bugs you notice please!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Everything seems fine, some (but fewer than FF18) apps FC on me. The multitask bug is still there, I haven't tested if the exchange bug is still there. Battery life seems a bit sketchy, but better than FF18's. This is near 92-95% percent of what our ICS update should have been in the first place.

I not sure to try the full ROM because I only flash the modem and can't even make a good call 95% of calls drop on me and the people I tell to call me they all went directly to my Voice mail.

I'm not sure what you're questioning, but I'll try to be more specific. After trying the FG20 ROM/Modem and realizing that it had no roaming option, I first reverted to a backup of FF18 ROM, keeping the FG20 Modem. But FF18 has an annoying WiFi issue where it often disconnects while in sleep mode. So I then restored old reliable a.k.a Blazer 4.1 ROM which doesn't have any issues whatsoever, or at least any that bothered me. The modem itself, whether EL29, FF18 or FG20, all performed about the same regardless of ROM type, so as of yet, there is no reason to go back to an earlier version than FG20.
Bottom line, when I mentioned WiFi issues, they had nothing to do with modems..... I think.
I am still trying to figure out what makes these builds so different.

I'm running this but I'm also on boost. Find it to be an improvement over the last few ics leaks. Using agat's latest release 4 which I loaded thru Odin since mobile Odin doesn't recognize the device anymore. All in all pretty smooth with good battery.

[Q] Modem questions

hi all,
I didnt find any threads that answered my question well, so if its a repeat my apologies. I am running Blu Kuban 1.0.5.4, it runs nice and smooth, i love everything about it, but i dont know JACK about modems in this sense. In about phone it says my modem is FF18, which seems right from everything i HAVE read lol, but then the BK build # say FL24.
i have read that GB and ICS modems are interchangeable, but i have no knowledge of where to start or IF i should bother messing with it. i know i have to travel to downtown orlando to catch a 4g signal, and 3g kinda sux and i get almost nothing inside my apt, and wifi is alot lower than i expected given i run a full dual-band DDWRT gigabit cat6 network.
so the crux of the question is the modem in the build number what it seems like? are the 2 conflicting or am i just misunderstanding al together lol and more, is there a better setup i can use, i know that tends to be phone specific but it seems like in general some prove to work well together and some dont.
thanks in advance for any/all help

FF18 is fine to run in BK FL24. Both are ICS. However, modems vary from phone to phone, location to location. I would try updating your modem to FL24, and after you reboot, update prl and profile, and see if that improves signal. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But the short answer is no, the build is not conflicting with your modem, it's most likely the area you are in. Play around with other modems, see if it helps! Good luck

Hmmm, sounds like you may have flashed a bad modem. Flash back, see what happens, then try another ff, fi, fk build

thanks, i tried a couple of different modems from the series' you suggested and none help, and most actually caused reboots and lockups, so im back at the FF18 and im gonna call it a failed experiment...im almost always on the wifi anyway but, it was worth a try

What method are you using to flash? Flashing modem shouldn't be causing all that

great inglihd
for the first one the FL24 i used the internal updater built into BK, but after that i switched to mobile odin bc i was afraid it was an updater issue...though my battery was a tad low but it was on the charger, and a straight wall charger too not a usb to my pc charger. ah well im not sweating it, like i said im mostly home anyway so having a kick ass rom thats rock solid is more important anyway lol
Not sure if you know but mobile Odin does not support the flashing of modems for the epic touch. It may look like it flashes but nothing happens. Either desktop Odin or recovery is the only way to flash a modem.

wow..no i didnt know that, some of the other boards hinted at it working through mobile odin and some said nothing at all, a friend however said it could so i took his advice...its possible he had the same thing where it looked like it flashed but didnt...it would explain the probs i had with the other modems lol

Read RWilco's comment in tutorial for flashing TAR and TAR.MD5 files, and it is a blanket statement regarding modems and Mobile Odin/Mobile Odin Pro (don't do it).

I don't believe this applies to GB and ICS modems. Let me check SXTP for confirmation.

I don't chance it flashing any modems. Everything else, sure. Modems, I use CWM exclusively.

with that in mind i will try using only cwm, and see if that makes a difference...thanks all for the help and the quick responses you guys all rock! im not a complete noob with flashing and such, but im not a pro either, i spent alot of time in IT and helpdesk, but now im back in school for programming, still only kinda towards the end of what would probably still be considered an apprentice level code monkey and while i some experience with linux/unix, in that realm i WOULD call myself a noob lol
ok so...i guess i have one more question, im running Blu Kuban, which uses a modified AGAT recovery...is it ok to flash a modem from that or should i just stick with desktop odin?

It's ok to flash from that. If it doesn't take, then try pc Odin. But like I said, I use CWM exclusively for modems.

Thank you for keeping us posted on your progress. Sprint/Boost/Virgin Mobile should just link to this forum in their communities for all tech support issues. It's faster, better info, and way friendlier. And wow it beats the heck out of going into their stores. I remember when Garwynn would post in the Sprint forum for the E4GT, and his input was far better than the Sprint monitors.
