so lets say you download CM7.0.2. to your computer, then you open the zip file, and go to system>apps> and select an apk you dont want such as wifi calling, twitter, or whatever and delete it, it means it wont install during initial installation right? so if there is an apk in the folder, it would install in the initial installation right?
so if i wanted facebook, root explorer, speed test, score mobile, etc to just install during installation by putting the apk's in the system/app folder would it simply just install instead of making the phone go crazy because the market is trying to download everything at once?

You'll need to sign the modified .zip file, but it's been proven to work.

This link is a bit dated, but the signature verification script should still work.

i use this method
Doesn't CWM offer the option to turn off signature verification?
Yes it does actually

I finally discovered what it is that causes a very annoying icon I have in my notification bar and am not able to get rid of.
I tried the Modaco rom for a couple of days and the icon was gone, now I am back to CyanogenMod and the icon is back again.
I tried force closing Sim Toolkit and yes, the icon disappears, unfortunately, so does my connection.
Is there any way to simply uninstall Sim Toolkit, since I assume the phone should be working without it as it is not there in the Modaco roms?
I get the same problem on my android defy with orange operator
...just delete the stk.apk in the /system/apps folder or you can remove it before you flash CM7 or any other rom for that matter.

A little additioning remark: to do the first thing meaple said, you have to be s-off. To do the second advice: download the rom you want as zip, extract it, navigate to /system/app and delete stk.apk, then compress the extracted zip again to zip file. Now flash like always.

Well yeh, you have to be S-Off to remove right off the phone. Second option, you don't have to extract it. Kinda depends on your archiving program. Perosnally, I use WinRaR and you can just open the zip file then delete the apk right from it without having to extract it then archive it and so on.

Okay, you are right. You do not have to extract.

I have the same problem (I am in Canada)
So after doing a factory reset and everything I could think of trying, I got my cell carrier (Videotron) to replace my cellphone, brand new, unopen box, new SIM card, new SD card and all... Well guess what... the icon is still there... on the brand new phone (Motorola XT720; Android 2.1)
So what could this be and how do we fix this?

Hi,
I am trying to remove some system apps with this one:
Optional Mods
System App Remover Utility New!
(Removes Friendstream, Facebook, Teeter, Twitter etc from the Rom. Simple flashable utility. Download it here. Flash it any time you want. If you want to keep some apps out of these, go to /scripts/remover.sh and remove the line corresponding to the app you want to keep.
The list of apps/widgets which the utility removes by default can be found here.

So I've edited remover.sh according to my needs, repacked it back with WinZip, but flashing through recovery gives:
E:can't find update script
I believe I am doing something wrong with rezipping. What should be the solution?
Original thread
Thanks in advance,
jukyO
Just open the zip with WinZip, do not unzip it. Then just drag and drop the files in or out of the zip.
Edit: Don't forget to turn signature verification off.
You can unzip fine, I do it all the time, then re-zip it using the standard Windows 'Compressed folders' option

Hi,
Drag&Drop did the trick! Verification was off all the time.
Thanks for helping.

i had a random thought this morning when i woke up, il try brake it down easy for peeps...
if i take the rom HC MIUI 3.2 (or any rom for that matter), unzip it, and remove/add different apps, will it install properly? so...
1.unzip
2.add/remove apps from system/app folder
3.re-zip
4. install.
will it work or do you have to have lots of knowlage on doing it.
or is this against development rules?
would love it if i could
Unzipping and then zipping it will remove its signature and you wont be able flash it in recovery.........you can do what you're saying by either
1)installing kitchen,setting up the rom,removing/adding apps,then building the rom
OR
2)install the rom, remove apps with the help of titanium backup
Hope this helps
forgot about signatures, hmmm tempted to create my own rom if i brick my phone its my own fault lol
but i will try the kitchen method

it's better to delete apps directly from the rom.zip without extracting, as rezipping can cause problems.
- use something like 7zip, double click it will open, but not extract it.
- you can remove/add apps from system/app folder by deleting directly or dragging apk's over. just don't delete system critical apps. i have found that not all apps will install and work properly on system/app, so takes a little trial and error
- you can probably find and delete languages and media sounds which you won't use within other system folders if you want
- close 7zip will update the zip.
- nandroid backup, full wipe and flash (you may need to disable signature verification, think it's under advanced within recovery).
i do this all the time with desire roms.

just disable signature verification within recovery, should flash just fine...
Is there a stock rom that will allow me to install apks? I am on sprint and unlocked/rooted. But when I flash a zip in recovery for mms apps or clock apps it just force closes.
I am guessing that you are asking about side-loading apps... ie. putting the apk on the phone, and then installing?
If so, you can do that on any ROM. You can do it on the stock Android install. All you need to do is move it onto the phone, and then navigate to it via a file explorer and open it. You will need to ensure "Unknown sources" is checked under "Settings">"Security".

I am talking about the zip files you flash from recovery. Everyone I flash will force close.

Try going to settings/apps and clearing the data on those apps then reopen them. If that fails as well, perhaps you could unzip them and just install the apk.

What if you need to install an apk from sdcard but you don't have a file manager installed yet, and to make things worse you don't have internet access to download it from the market!
Well, there's a solution to that. Provided by every internet browser available.
(I suppose you have one installed
Here's what you need to do:
1. Put the apk file in the main directory your sdcard. Rename it to something very short for easy typing. In this example, I will use "fm.apk".
2. Boot your device. Goto Security Settings and check "Unknown Sources".
3. Open your internet browser. In the address bar type "file:///sdcard/<filename>.apk".
In our example above it should look like this: "file:///sdcard/fm.apk"
4. Press "Go".
That's it! Installation started!

You could also do
adb install /sdcard/name.apk
If you were feeling like a pro.

Or, instead of trying to remember browser commands or adb commands, just skip all of this madness and grab a flashable .zip that contains a file manager! ~
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills over here, kids.
If you don't have a flashable file manager, just grab the one I made on the WildChild ROM thread (Post #1). Copy the .zip to your SD Card. Done. Don't ever worry about flashing a ROM without a file manager ever again.
I will give this a try.Looks interesting

Danceoff, this is for people who are trying to PREPARE for flashing ROMs on the fly. Ie. They have access to market, file explorer etc NOW but won't LATER when they actually do the flash.
I don't have service right now so my phone is basically a tiny tablet, and I'm a flash-a-holic. i flash ROMs on break at work, on the bus, etc. This is very handy for me. Thank you.
something new!
