Root, return or report lost? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Me and my girl both have the evo, mine is the 003 and it runs great, rooted and all and my girl has the 004 model. Now here's the thing, the 004 evo has the random reboot issue and its her second one, both had same problem. I don't feel like returning it for another because its getting annoyin.
So my question is more of asking your guys opinion, should I root and flash it so she can enjoy the wonderful roms, return it and try to get another and cross my fingers it don't have the same defect or report it lost and get the nexus s 4g?
Let me know what you all think, thanks

What does your girl want to do? Personally, I would probably root it with unrevoked and then flash amon RA v2.3 over the ClockworkMod recovery that unrevoked will put on it. Flashing amon RA has fixed a great deal of phones with reboot issues. After that, I would flash a rooted ODEXED stock 3.70 rom since your girl is already familiar with the default layout.

By the way, you can get the aforementioned rom from the link below:

Root that bad boy, and enjoy it for all its worth.

That is what I did to mine the day I got it and was thinking about doing the same to hers. I just heard from other people about the reboot issue getting worse over time and didn't want to take the chance of rooting then having to unroot to return if it does get worse, that's my fear and the reason I didn't root it yet but I want to lol

If its not working right send that thing back and make them give you a brand new one. Don't let them talk you into using your insurance or taking a recertified one. If it is rebooting while unrooted and with the stock rom odds are rooting will just make it worse.

I kind of agree with this. Everyone has pretty much come to the conclusion that most phones with frequent random reboots cannot be fixed and will only get worse despite being rooted or not.
I'm also thinking that since this has happened with two of hers, it could be an app she has used on both phones - this, the sd card, and the battery are the only things the two phones should have in common. Did it start happening straight out of the box, after setting everything back up, or some time after? If it is one of those things causing it, a new phone will not help.
Rooting may not solve the problem, but it will definitely make the phone more fun/useful while not rebooting.

I used the same SD card on both phones but once the new phone started the rebooted I changed to a 2gb I had that was fine but it still did the random reboots. The only apps she uses us Facebook and Google talk, she's a very simple person lol

Well you can try rooting them, and if you still get them, then it seems like just unlucky hardware issues.

From a consumer perspective, xhausx is 100% right. The device that you purchased is defective and being that it is the second defective device, you should indeed *demand* a brand new one. I tinker with stuff so I would root it and try all sorts of fixes, but if it still didn't work after that, I would then unroot it, flash a ruu and eventually return it.

No options yet. BTW, this belongs in the Q&A forum. If you had looked there, you would've seen the sticky thread at the top which says there is no way to root 2.2 yet.

You have two options.
Wait for a developer to gain root on 2.2.
or
Figure out how to do it yourself then come back and post in the "EVO 4G Android Development" section and post away.

I was in Radio Shack where I got my phone and the manager told me that none of her EVO's had been shipped with 2.2 yet. This was just 2 days ago also.
Picked up two at the sprint store yesterday and they both had 2.2 pre installed.

I had a new one from RS about 2 weeks ago and it did NOT have 2.2 but manager tried to install it, I said HELL No!! Sent it back due to hardware issue. This time I went through Sprint CSR and the rep said he is sending me a brand new one. HE him self said, "dont do the 2.2 upgrade, it kills your battery." I hope it comes with 2.1
Im getting mine delivered today from an insurance claim i had made thru asurion the insurance company and they were out of stock on them for about 5-7 days and they finally got one and its being delierved today, I have my fingers crossed that it does not have 2.2 preinstalled!!!!!!

Then you talked to an idiot. If anything, 2.2 will improve battery life, but only if you use reasonable options, and even then the difference (either way) won't be dramatic.

I'm sure at Asurion's refurb depots they flash the newest version, its just what they do. That being said, at MY Sprint office, we have never had a NEW EVO come in with 2.2 pre-installed.
Yea I was one of the lucky ones that assurion sent me an evo with 2.2 preinstalled, is there ANY WAY that even sprint could downgrade 2.2 to 2.1

Ive been on the phone with Sprint technical support multiple times and their answer is no, they can not revert the phone to 2.1. I also went and talked to the repair guys at my local Sprint store and they also said there is no way for them to revert. I have decided I will be patient and wait for the Devs to root 2.2, I am confident they will do it soon.

From what I've read, the stock HTC Froyo kernel is terrible for battery life. Worse than the stock 2.1 kernel. The custom Froyo kernels significantly improve battery life. I have no actual experience with Stock Froyo though.

[Q] EVO common probs and whatnot?

Whats going on dudes i been in the heroc forum since launch and finally decided to let her go. I know im a tad bit late but I got my evo over xmas and just had some questions that I thought id ask before I even attempt to root; i have 30 days to return it. I done some searching and came across a few threads of common probs so im gaining some knowledge. What does this so called "light leakage" look like and what should I look for. I also saw something about some peoples phones not holding 4g; how long should It hold 4g before it drops? I did see some users mention hardware version; mine says 0004. Sorry if im asking to much i just dont want to get really settled in and start noticing problems and i have to take it back. So what should i really be looking for to make the call to take this sucker back before 30 days is up. Thanks in advance

I cannot answer any of your 4g questions because I do not have our where I live.
Light leakage issue is because the screen can separate from the body of the phone. Hard to explain what it looks like. Mine had it slightly but does not bother me.
Fyi...if you flash a aosp rom your camera will most likely not work. 4g and hdmi will not work either until cyanogen and teamdouche get it working. Should not be too long at all for 4g on cyanogenmod. A couple weeks or so I would GUESS.
Don't take your evo back. If you have anything else you have a question about feel free to pm me

Well I'm in love with the device already I think I somewhat understand light leakage as my hero might have suffered from this(if its the same thing). I live in Houston tx the 4g seems ok but mine dropped 1 or 2 times but that should be no biggie. Lastly, thanks for the warm welcome and help man.

Hey there and welcome. Definitely stay with the evo. It's off the chain. Make sure you find the proper way to root your hardware version. I've heard it can be a little tricky. After you root I suggest using Myn's Warm Rom. It's based off stock but has several goodies. Sprint hotspot is unlocked, it's fast and snappy. I use Myn with Calkulins new kernel. It gives you awesome battery life. If you need some assistance with anything don't hesitate to PM me. I'm more than willing to help. Hope you stay and enjoy the ride.

That's sounds awesome and exactly what I want to do. My main goal is just to get root access and keep rockin sense; I just want to be able to remove the bloatware really i.e sprint nascar, football etc and unlocking WiFi tether. Unfortunately my phone came with 2.2(651.1) so I can't root just yet I don't think but day #3 with my evo is freaking sweet.

Mine came with 2.2 as well.that doesn't mean you can't root it.you can root all evo's. Like I said before it's going to matter what hardware you have. It really depends on your hboot version. Power off the phone then while holding down the volume button press and hold the power button till the screen comes on completely. Now at the top you can see your hboot version.search the forum on how to root your version. If you have trouble finding the correct way pm me with your hboot version as well a your hardware version. You can find that in settings under about phone.look for hardware info.then it will be a 4 digit# such as 0003.

[Q] Evo 4G Gingerbread 2.3.3 Root?

Okay, so I ordered my Evo 4G back in June right before Sprint emailed me about the Evo 3D coming in 12 days from that date. When my Evo arrived, I activated it by calling sprint, made a test call, checked the software (2.2.1 I believe), threw the phone in my pocket and drove to soccer practice. When I got back home from practice, my phone had updated to 2.3.3. I suppose autoupdating was on or something and it ran the OTA itself while I was at practice. So now I am trapped with a 2.3.3 Evo with S-ON and I am furious. I am sure that there are others like me with a never rooted Evo dying to get theirs rooted as well. If anyone has any information as to the progress of either a real TEMP ROOT or FULL ROOT then don't hesitate to post it in this thread. I don't want this to be a discussion thread; just a simple "Post What You Know" sort of thing.

The best place for you to get information at this point is following some devs on twitter: alpharevx,Agraben,Unrevoked. I'm sure others can add to this list.
They seem to be making the most progress.
And sorry to hear about your phone updating itself. That sucks.

Wht is your Hboot version?
well it does not really matter the hboot. i can tell you, it is hboot 2.16. all gingerbread 2.3.3 regardless of software version (4.22.651.2 and 4.24.651.1) will have that hboot.
and unfortunately the devs will not post any progress. they may or may not post when an exploit is found. they may just post only when a temp root is available. it is all hush hush for fear of htc or even sprint releasing a silent ota that can close the exploit. so for now if you do not see any threads about an exploit or an ability to root your evo, then you should just wait. there will be posts (more like thousands, lol) about it.

Unfortunately I received a new Evo from repair center with Hboot 2.16.0001 and last OTA included. I miss my rooted EVO...
Hope devs find a solution soon, thanks to everyone working on it.
I doubt very seriously its an auto ota update. If that was the case no one in the evo threads would still have root. It would've auto dated every evo still with 2.2, besides it says make sure the battery is full before u take it. #justsaying

in the mean time can anyone tell me how to shut the phone off all the way without pulling the battery. power off by pressing power button pretty much just puts it to sleep you cant get to recovery or hboot when powering back on.

[Q] Taking rooted EVO in for service

I have an EVO with a cracked screen that's running one of the CM7 nightlies. I need to take it in for service, but I was wondering if I should flash back to some stock ROM first. If I do, what should I download that will allow me to re-root the phone? If I understand things correctly here, the current Sprint image has not been rooted yet, so I want to make sure that I don't wind up locking myself out of my phone.
Flash the ruu for 2.2 and make sure when you take it in you make sure to tell the tech not to update your phone cause they will do it out of habit.

Any idea where I might find the specific RUU that I will be able to root my way out of?
last time I took my Evo for service I was running Mik3D... they replace the kickstand without any questions.. also tech guy was looking at different setting in my phone and didn't said a word to me..

I get the impression that they mostly don't care. I originally took it in last month and the guy first asked if it was rooted (the lock screen was different), to which I replied yes, and he said something along the lines of "cool I rooted mine too". He then asked if I had insurance, and when I said no, he told me to sign up for insurance and come back in a month. Yet another reason I'm happy with Sprint
Eh, it is a hardware issue, cracked screen. You should be able to leave it as is. If you want, put a PC36IMG.zip of stock Froyo on your SD card in case they are ridiculous and insist on unrooting. Never S-On, they rarely ever check for it

[Q] How do I brick my phone

I kinda of want to intentionally brick my phone just so sprint would replace it. I have been having some trouble with my evo lately, it just started to reboot so frequently lately. I was running decks 1.2.1 and just thought it was the rom, so i completely wipe everything, reflash and same thing. I noticed when my phone rebooted it would get hot or warm, and gps did not work after flashing decks 1.2.1, trying to use gps would automatically cause the phone to reboot. Any rom with the vision gps drivers would cause phone to reboot when trying to use gps, only gps driver that would work was the cm7 drivers, mainly used the N39 one and that would work and I could use gps, but phone kept rebooting. So then i tried to flash the latest stock rom, but had same problem. Also tried to use myn's warm rom release 5, which was always so stable in the past and never had any problems with when i was using it in the past, but yea phone just would reboot at random when phone would get warm or just doing stuff. Then i flashed the latest radio, pri, nv, and hboot. Went back to decks but its very frustrating, i can not use my phone for a long time or it warms up and goes into a bootloop, then have to pull the battery and give it a couple minutes to cool down before i can pop the battery back in and have it not reboot immediately afterwards. So after all this i was just gonna try and brick it to see if i could get another evo, but yea i tried to flash a radio and battery pull but that did not work. Did i screw myself by flashing the latest hboot?
Why don't you flash a stock rom. See if it still does it and then go to sprint and tell them all the problems you're having
We're comin from a pure power source.
That's insurance fraud dude, cause everyone's prices to go up. Don't be that guy.

I did try a stock rom and it kept happening. That is why I was trying to brick it so they would just exchange it. If I take it to sprint I would need to flash a RUU right? Then deal with sprints b.s. until they exchange it.
I've never had a problem getting my phone replaced. You have problems with your phone. They will replace it. And yes, the ruu will return it to stock.

How is it insurance fraud? My phone is not working properly, I have been paying an insurance charge on my plan since the launch of the evo. Don't want to deal with their very annoying employees and just want a replacement, is that too much to ask for?

Pull your battery while flashing a radio update should def brick you but you should just unroot if your worried.

That will definitely brick it.
It sounds like a hardware issue. Sprint will replace it. Don't brick your phone, not worth it.
RUU to the latest update. Get S-On (there are a few threads with tutorials). Try to document your phone acting up if you can (I had an overheating issue with my old phone so I took screenshots of an app showing my phone 135+ degrees. Reboots, maybe video it, I don't know.)
