earlier, i managed to brick my defy by first deleting google talk and then using terminal emulator to push the google talk back in system apps.
after flashing a stock sbf through rsdlite, i got my phone working again. my problem started when i flashed another rom (followed instructions from pay's rom tutorial). i was able to flash the sbf file, then root using superoneclick, then install clockwork mod (downloaded the apk and installed manually). i rebooted after cmw install just to be sure and when rebooting to cm recovery only a blank screen shows. i was puzzled as on m original 2.51 rom before, the clockworkmod recovery screen shows up when i reboot in recovery. i tried installing other stock roms (nordic froyo), the problem still persists (blank screen). it also seems to have affected the standard recovery (volume down+power), after showing the exclamation mark with the android guy, no matter where i press on the screen nothing happens, whereas before pressing on the lower right hand screen brings up the menu. what did i screw up this time?
i needed cm recovery to work for i can't flash custom roms without it. any help would be much appreciated. thanks
I had the same problem with clockworkmod so I installed the 2nd init recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212 and used clockwork mod from its recovery menu.
I think the problem was caused by installing clockwork mod with USB debugging enabled.

so should i try uninstalling clockworkmod and install again? this time un-enabled usb debugging?
what exactly is a 2nd init recovery?do i just flash this over the existing sbf?
sorry for the questions, am still a newbie when flashing defy.
to access stock recovery when the android appears press vol down + up at the same time, my touch screen didnt work in recovery before either
once you can access stock recovery wipe data/factory reset, and flash a new ROM fresh

Hi there,
Trying to get custom recovery on a defy 850mhz model (Telstra Australia)
TL;DR: Loading a custom recovery gives a black screen when you attempt to boot into recovery from the app. When booting into recovery from power off, it takes you to the motorola one.
More detail:
PaY did a pretty good job with his desire roms, so i decided to give them a shot for defy. Instructions below that i followed:
PaY87 said:
README - Step by step flashing guide:
Please do this steps also if you come from v1.2 or from any other ROM.
You can go to step 5 if you already flashed UK 3.4.2-117 SBF, rooted and installed clockwork recovery or have ROM v1.4 or higher.
1.) Wipe your phone in recovery mode
2.) Flash UK 3.4.2-117 Motorola SBF with RSD Lite in bootloader mode
(The sbf is packed in a rar image just extract it and then you get the sbf. The problem is, that the filename is to long and windows cuts off the extension "rar" on some PCs. Be sure to unpack the download else RSD Lite don't can flash it because it is a rar and not a sbf. )
3.) Enable ADB in the settings and root your device with SuperOneClickRoot for Froyo. Then do a reboot.
4.) Disable ADB and install clockwork recovery image
5.) Put the ROM.zip to your SD Root and boot into clockwork recovery
6.) Flash the ZIP + reboot and enjoy
When everything fails:
-If something went wrong and you stuck in a bootloop etc, shutdown the system (if possible) or pull out the battery.
-Go into the system recovery with "vol down + power".
-Then when you see the android update guy press vol down + vol up at the same time.
-Wipe your phone + factory reset.
-Reboot and hold "vol up + power"
-You are now into bootloader mode, reflash the system with RSD Lite and a sbf you like
-Your Defy is back in biz

So i had the stock telstra rom, used z4root and loaded the recovery that was linked to above. This worked, and i was going to just flash the new rom but decided to follow the instructions.
Then proceded to follow the instructions above, loading that 3.4.2 rom. Flashed it, rooted with superoneclick and then loaded recovery again.
Then when i pressed boot into recovery, it simply gives a black screen. The screen is on, you can see the backlight, it just has nothing.
I tried the other recovery made by another user, the latest clockworkmod, with the same apk tool for installing recovery. Same thing again.
Holding vol down + power makes it boot into the motorola recovery.
Reflashed the rom several times, tried z4root instead, no idea why it isnt working.
I guess im just spoiled with Unrevoked when it comes to my own phone.
disabled usb debugging?
had the same problem, disabe usb debugging solved it for me thanks !
I'm on telstra as well, like the other replies disable usb debugging then it will work.

Hi all, I'm looking for a little help.
I have a GSM Desire that I rooted a while back with Unrevoked and selected a custom recovery image which at the time was AmonRa. I've been running LeeDroid for a while, updated a couple of revision of ROMs with no problem and have now moved onto CM7 RC2.
After looking in ROM Manager which I'd never used before, it tells me my current recovery is ClockworkMod 2.5.0.7 and if I click on reboot into recovery it reboots into ClockworkMod. However if I press the powere button and reboot into recovery I end up in AmonRa 1.7.0.1-R5.
So first is this expected as if not how do I resolve it?
Second, how can I go about reflashing to a later version of AmonRa? I've tried using Unrevoked again but it seems to stop at "Running root" after pushing the image and rebooting the phone.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Rom Manager has it's own fake flash recovery which just loads the recovery once, temporary recovery if you would like to call it that. The AmonRA that you have is a permanent recovery installed. That is why you get the two different recoveries.
As it stands, the only way to flash a permanent recovery image (the one you want to update) is to use fastboot or to use a utility. This requires S-Off.
Using unrevoked on an already rooted rom is a no go.
Hello everybody, first post, please take care .
hey everyone,
So i just rooted my phone using the wiki cyanogen mod, and everything worked great... afterwards I downloaded rom manager and used this method here
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Vision:_Radio_and_CyanogenMod
Method via ROM Manager
Launch RomManager.
Optional: Choose the first option in the app, Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to update to the latest version.
Select the Download ROM option from the main menu in the ROM Manager.
Select the CyanogenMod option, and then choose the latest version of CyanogenMod from the menu.
Optional: When you select the latest version of CyanogenMod, check the Google Apps* option.
Once the ROM is finished downloading, it asks if you would like to Backup Existing ROM and Wipe Data and Cache.
If Superuser prompts for root permissions check to Remember and then Allow.
The HTC Vision will now reboot into the recovery, wipe data and cache, and then install CyanogenMod. When it's finished installing it will reboot into CyanogenMod.

After this the phone rebooted and now it's been stuck on the white htc screen... I'm completely clueless on what to do now.. any help would be great thank you guys
So did you flash a 5.x.x.x recovery from ROM manager? People are having issues with this.
Pull the battery and try booting up again. If this happened on your first attempt (aka it hasnt actually wiped or anything) just go back to your ROM, and flash a previous CWM recovery. 3.0.2.4 works. THEN try to do the process.
All ROM manager is doing here is automating a process you can do yourself. I'm assuming what happened is you're having a problem with the new recovery when it reboots to go to the recovery, it hangs on HTC screen. ROM manager and CWM haven't even had a chance to do anything yet.
Another option is to pull the battery and boot with vol. down + power, then enter recovery. See if it enters. If it does, then you can reboot and run the install from ROM manager and it should work this time. You could also do it manually at that point if you wanted.
For me (and many others) when using a 5.x.x.x CWM recovery, the first boot always hangs at the HTC logo, and after a battery pull and a 2nd attempt to boot into recovery, it works.
if i was at your position and cwm is installed, by look at your post it is installed.
i pull battery out and put it back in. turn on your phone whilst holding volume down.
it will scan for pc10img if there's any dont install it...
then there should be an option for recovery, use the volume rocker to navigate gate and your on button to select.
your phone will restart and hopefully load cwm manager.
if you've got there then you can wipe data and cache then install a different ROM or another cyanmod rom.
thank you guys for all the help! it was much needed, I have successfully rooted my phone and I have cyanmod 7, i'm so glad i didn't brick my phone hahah
Gratulations
Hi all...
Phone = Droid A855
Rooted = Yes, with "SuperOneClick"
ROM Manager v4.8.0.1
Clockworkmod v2.5.0.1
Phone was first rooted two weeks ago and phone was fully up to date at that time.
Problem:
Clockworkmod Recovery doesn't stay after I flash it and reverts back to the default factory Recovery.
Basically, I can use rom manager to download/flash clockwork mod and then I must use "reboot into recovery" for me to use the clockwork mod. this is my only chance to use it. If I restart again the factory recovery is back and what's stranger is that if I allow the phone to load and go into ROM manager, that app reports that I have the clockwork mod flashed.... If I use "reboot into recovery" OR if I do a manual shutdown and use the hold "X" method then I'm back into the factory recovery.
I can only use clockworkmod once and I must boot into shortly after the flash... if I wait too long to reboot, I've found that at some unknown time the factory recovery is once again placed on the phone.
Thank you for any help or tips on this,
TK.
No ideas?.... is there a better place to post about this?
Hello xda members,
I own a Xperia Arc, was running android 2.3.4 and decided it was time for a new rom for the phone, i carried out a couple of steps but in the end i got stuck, and i can't get into cwm recovery to restore or install a new rom, and i cant even root the phone, here are the steps that i carried out in order to try and install a new rom( Sorry they are long):
1: rooted my Arc using a program called "Eroot v1.2", I enabled usb debug mode and connected, pressed the button and it rooted it, I managed to see the superuser app installed and i also downloaded an app called "root checker" which verified that my Arc was rooted successfully.
2: I downloaded a program called "recoverx" to install cwm recovery on my Arc and once again it was done successfully, i switched the phone off and back on while holding the volume up button and i got into cwm recovery.
3: I went into cwm and made a rom backup
4: I downloaded the new rom (Xperia Ultimate HD Rom) onto my sd card and went into cwm recovery and deleted everything such as wiping the
data, and a factory reset, and i deleted the delvik cache and the bettery stats
5: I went to the install from sd card, and installed the new rom, and at the end i unchecked the "Reboot" button, and it took me back to cwm recovery and pressed on reboot into cwm
So after this point everything seems fine and to me im sure iv carried out all the correct steps, but....
6: after this point the phone rebooted, and after the sony logo, it gave a black screen and was stuck at that screen no matter what, at that point, i could not get into cwm recovery anymore.
7: After reading and searching the internet I managed to educate myself that i was supposed to flash something called a kernel, so i downloaded a tool called sonyericssson xperia flash tool, and downloaded a kernel called lt15i_4.1.b.587_kernel.ftf and flashed it, turned the phone on only to find that my Arc was stuck in a boot loop, it was restarting after the sony logo immediatly.
8: I then downloaded another kernel called lt15i_4.1.b.431_kernel only.ftf and flashed it which cured my boot loop and the phone booted successfully, however my main problem now is that I can no longer root my Arc, and I can no longer get into cwm recovery no matter what.
Iv also read about using the fastboot method to install kernels but when i do it, it says failed as the phone is not rooted, so now i have no way at all of rooting or installing the cwm recovery.
I currently have a locked boot loader as well.
So if anyone can please tell me how i can sort this problem out it would be amazing, or if you could just tell me what i did wrong or where i went wrong and how i can sort it out, I really want to install cwm recovery and just restore my old rom back, or even install a totally new rom.
You can't flash kernels
Try SEUS or PC Companion to repair your phone
Then root it, install CWM and restore your backup
For UHD you need ICS kernel so update your arc to official ICS, then root it, install CWM and flash UHD
