[Q] Help with S-Off - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, I know I am lining up for a flaming here, but I need some help. I have done as much searching and reading as I can handle and am even more confused.
I have dl'd and burnt alpharev.iso to disc and booted from it. I connect phone when I read "Waiting for your device" and then proceed.
Step 1 of pushing necessary files completes, then I get "waiting for bootloader...OK!". Once phone has booted (twice...??), I get the following-
hub2-0:0-1 unable to enumerate device on port(x)
Then "preparing for H-Boot flash...Done!" and back to bootloader. Then step 3, and reboot (twice) followed by same error report as above.
Finally, I see lines of
/home/htc/alpharev.sh:line331:[:-enq:unary operator expected
Then phone reboots into ROM.
Looking at HBoot, I still see S-On and clearly the phone is not bricked...thankfully. I think I am getting an error thru my USB port, but changing to different ports just gives me a different number at (x) in the error report, with the same end result...
Any help would be great. Cheers.

Sometimes, when you try S-Off.... you will always see S-on in the menu. Sometimes it doesn't mean anything. Alpha Rev, if I remember from the old days, only changes the Bootloader.
But, if you saw the Heath Ledger Joker when you boot after Alpha Rev, you are S-Off.
With other programs, you need to try and replace the spash1 for example, through adb, to know if you have S-Off.
Ohhhhh somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

Thanks for the reply... I got no Joker at the end, which is why I was pretty sure the process hadn't worked...
Will try again today. Maybe with a different method...

I had exactly the same issue (I had SuperNova rom installed with Data2SD) i had then installed the new Oxygen 2.1 (no Apps2SD/Data2SD this time though) and gave it a try again on the off chance.
This time it worked a treat
(might be a conincidence, but it worked for me )

I had a different issue when trying to s-off - the utility wouldn't recognise my device on rooted stock rom after I created a goldcard - I too flashed oxygen and it worked first time!!
Maybe a thought. You can switch back to whatever other rom after you s-off.

No coincidence. You will always have trouble on a Sense based ROM using AlphaRev. I think it has something to do with the relationship between the stock HBOOT and the boot.img on the \boot partition of the phone (but I am not sure about that)
One thing I can tell you for sure is that if you flash to any AOSP ROM (CyanogenMod, Oxygen etc) then do the AlphaRev S-OFF process and you will have success.
Happy S-OFFING!

It's not a coincidence.. It's mentioned on the supernova and starburst site on the list of faqs under ' how to s off while running data2sd'
It's also mentioned on the alpharev site

It's not a sense issue as such, but of those roms which use a2sd+/data2sd
Swyped with my Starburst based Desire. Please ignore any typos or grammos.

droidzone is right. Just flash stock rooted rom and then try to s-off. I bet it'll work. Had same problem as you.

gonna try a stock ROM or Cyanogen before trying S-off again...thanks guys

Awesome, thanks for contributions folks!
My PC is in for repair atm, but will try flash one of the AOSP ROMs soon and have another go.

[Q] Flashing a ROM, it's been a while...

Hi, I have posted this before but it got deleted because I very stupidly posted it in the wrong place.
My question has been answered before due to searching but no one else happens to be in my EXACT situation and I don't want to mess up my phone.
Basically my Desire HD is rooted etc and I want to flash the Android Revolution ROM, but I havent flashed any ROM's since my OLD G1 and now everyone talks about S-OFF etc and I don't understand these, on my G1 it was simply rooting and flashing a Recovery and then flashing a ROM, so basically what do I need to flash this ROM
My situation:
I am running the stock ROM (permroot on 1.32.405.6)
I have stock radio
I have Clockwork mod 3.0.0.6
and Buzz Sense 1.3 + OC (OC'd 1.6Ghz) kernel.
(+Ever since I downgraded from 1.72 I have lost wi-fi, it connected to my wi-fi but I get no internet access through it, its definitely a problem with the phone and nothing else because I have tested my router etc, all my other devices have connectivity through my router)
We all were in your exact situation. The Desire HD employs an extra level of security to prevent users messing with their handsets, S-ON.
You need to turn this off, Ideally ENG (Engineering) S-OFF, before you can make persistent changes to your system.
Have a read through the very helpful guides in the Dev section. They also contain the tools you need. Turning S-OFF should be a one time process only, i.e once you've done it there is no need to repeat it to flash another ROM.
Hope that helps.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have SHIP S-OFF and I'm unable to get ENG S-OFF because when I used the Easy S-OFF tool it can only give me SHIP S-OFF for some reason, I cant do anything now since its incompatible with my kernel as well. Can I flash a ROM with just SHIP S-OFF? I don't want to flash any radios because I bricked my G1 about 4 million times when flashing radios.
It you run a 1.32 WWE RUU and revert back to stock you can then reapply ENG S-OFF. A bit of a ball ache I know.
Most ROMs will work just fine with SHIP S-OFF but ENG is usually preferred.
To flash a radio you need Radio S-OFF another beast entirely. However there is a very good too to do it with. No bricks so far and your DHD will then have super CID and be SIM unlocked.

Just tick the "I have radio s-off" box and it becomes compatible with everything.
follow my guide in the sig and skip to eng s-off and radio s-off part, or skip to whatever comes next if you've already done them
Tried that, I get a "Connection Error", I have made sure its fully connected as "Disk Drive" and I allow the Super User request when I do it, but it still doesn't work, plus the radio tool just says "Incompatible kernel" - or something like that.
I mainly want to know, can I flash Android Revolution in my current situation, can I flash with just SHIP S-OFF and my current kernel, or do I have to go back to stock kernel, flash the ROM and then flash my kernel back?
and why should I have ENG S-OFF, if it makes a lot of difference I will give it ago, but I mainly want to just flash this ROM to see if it fixes my wifi issue and my camera doesn't drop so many frames! (known issue in 1.32, fixed in 1.7X)
Disk Drive. Yeah, read the guide again more carefully, mate... And change the tool, why are you using easy radio tool!? It won't give you ENG S-OFF. My ENG S-OFF tool will give you that. And it most definitely will not say incompatible kernel if you just tick the box I talked about.
You can flash ARHD now. Do not mess around with it's kernel after flashing, because it comes with the best kernel out there. The kernel has been made to fit ARHD's needs.

I get the same as every other time, downloads the Easy S-OFF tool, "Pushing stuff to SD" Phone says "Unknown has been granted su access" and then the tool says "Error: Connection Problem!" - I get this every time, I have tried re-downloading this software every time, removing the "Unknown" in super user and then re-allowing it when it asks, I still get the same error...
Does it matter that I'm using Windows 7 64-bit?
EDIT: I think I've done it now, I downloaded the latest 2.3 SDK (I had 2.2) which updated my ADB drives, I didn't get the error this time, will boot into H-BOOT and check now.
Are you still using that disk drive mode? Because you should not.
THANKS
I have thanked everyones post, I can confirm my H-BOOT Now says PVT ENG S-OFF, one last thing, I'm all good to flash now? I can just put the ROM (sense version) on my SD card and flash it in CWM, with my current kernel, even though it will over write it with the one included for Android Revolution, I dont have to go back to stock kernel or anything first right?
Thanks again
Have you flashed ClockworkMod Recovery yet? If not download ROM Manager from the Market and flash it from there.
Once that is complete, download ROM, put on SD Card, Recovery, Wipe, Flash, Enjoy.

Can't s-off alpharev

Hi guys I'm trying to s-off using alpharev ISO disc...it goes through the process then after rebooting stage 3 I get 4 lines that say unary operator expected ... I shut down pc and phone boots as usual...
I'm running rxmix s v1.1
maybe change to stock ROM and try s-off again
Yes like the post above switch to a ROOTED stock froyo rom worked for me, the reason your getting errors is because the rom you are running has probably got data2whatever, data++ ect... this affects the alpha rev process.
Ditto above. Alpharev doesn't work on a2sd or similar ROMs... Look back a couple pages and you'll see I started a thread with the same issue. I'm on IC GB a2sd+...
Once pc is repaired, I plan to load stock Telstra RUU and try again, then re-root...

First, you better use USB stick instead of a disc, it is faster a more reliable.
Secondly, you won't be able to get s-off unless you flash either stock rom or AOSP rom ( oxygen worked for me without any problems).

Happy to hear
Hi folks. Writing this without any hope that someone is online at the moment.
I'm currently using alpharev to flash HBOOT on my htc desire. It has stucked on step 3 with two lines on phone's screen:
Aplharev SPLBOOT version 2.0
...
Normal NAND detected. Non-PVT4
and keeps hanging like that nearly an hour already.
The phone is rooted, with Clockworkmod recovery and InserCoin 2.0.1 DATA2EXT ROM installed.
Did anybody have the same behaviour while flashing HBOOT?
Should I be patient and wait for some miracle to happen?
thanks in advance.
Are you S-Off already??
use the new S-OFF utility. It's a lot quicker and easier. Just make sure you uninstall HTC Sync, or at least make sure it isn't running.

try it with the new utility.. it should work for you..
finally I've restored my previous ROM (and sh*tted a pile of bricks during this hour).
HBOOT screen says that my device is still S-ON. strange... maybe that's because of 'DATA2EXT' ROM onboard.

You won't be able to alter HBoot without S-Off...
I am not sure how the new Utility that bortak linked to works, but I know that the "old" alpharev will not S-Off if you are using A2SD/D2SD/D2EXT type ROMs. You will need to flash stock RUU (do not use latest GB update RUU!!!), or one of the AOSP ROMs, such as Oxygen, before proceeding.
Once you have S-Off, you can go back and re-root, then upgrade your HBoot etc.

I'm still wondering, why TUT-makers didn't mention this A2SD/D2SD/D2EXT ROMs inconsistency.
I think this should be written in large letters on the first line for noobs like me
Lol, you're right on that!!
If you look on alpharev site, it is mentioned in the text, but VERY small!
Requirements:
The only requirement right now is that the ROM you're running is rooted.
As techniques such as 'data2ext' have been popping up, these might disturb our finely-tuned flashing process.
Please revert to a rooted stock ROM if possible. Your /data partition is used for temporary storage of important files.

I missed it the first time also, had lots of dramas, and finally spotted that note after many frustrating hours. It should have been written in bright red, 72 cap at the top of screen!!
You need to use an a2sd Rom like lee Droid 2.5.
Alpha rev state this at start of web page using data2sd can cause problems.
Flash lee Droid 2.5 and try it again, you should be fine
Kind regards

Problems:LeeDrOiD HD V3.3.3 GB Port R5 Data and lack of free space for apps

Hello everyone,
I have a HTC Desire. I installed LeeDrOiD HD V3.3.3 GB Port R5 Data and created 1GB partition EXT3. Now the system has 20 MB of free memory.
I can not install any application, since the system displays "free some space".
Why??
I using the google and found nothing.
Have many reads of the FAQ: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226017
it's really useful to help understand what's going on.
My guess is that you may have installed the wrong version and/or not have the right hboot

you may have read it, but i don't think you have read it enough times to understand it. sections 1 and 2 are the most useful
many people, including myself, have used that guide to install the rom completely from scratch with no prior knowledge.
when i said wrong version i meant the A2SD or data++ version of the ROM. from your info i believe you are s-off with stock hboot, but have installed the data++ version of the rom. there are sections within the FAQ which deal with this.
Ok: I think I know what the problem is - I need another version of this page hboot alpharev.nl And here I have another problem because never changed the hboot. LeeDroid previously used in version 2.5 and then it removed the s-off, and installed the recovery RA-Desire-2.0 and then the number of hboot has changed itself. So, I have a few question:
The installation of a new installation hboot is otherwise recovery? after the surgery I will have further RA-Desire-2.0 or AlphaRev? AlphaRev or during installation can damage the phone? whether this process can be reversed?
Also never installed a radio, or is it necessary?
I know a lot of questions but most importantly for me, it does not damage the phone. And sorry fom my english.
you're going to have to read the FAQ main sections a few more times

good, so at least you have made progress in understanding what went wrong.
you should have installed either:
- A2SD version on stock hboot
- data++ version on cm7r2 hboot
however you installed data++ version on stock hboot, make sense?

no, when you s-off the hboot changed to 6.93.1002. installing a new rom does not remove s-off.

they can damage only if you flash a corrupted hboot file. therefore make sure you verify the md5 sums of the hboot img given on alpharev.nl. (search google for what md5 sums are, and then use a program called md5check)
this process can be reversed, deal with that later if/when you need to.

nobody wants to damage their phone, which is why guides like this FAQ were written in the first place. all the steps, links and troubleshooting tips are given there. the fact that i'm referencing sections out of it proves that you haven't really read or understood it.
I installed this rom a while ago, and kept reading it many many times before attempting anything, please do the same. once you do that:
- you will install everything successfully
- you'll have enough space for apps
- most importantly, hopefully you'll understand what you have actually done, and where all your apps, data and dalvik are stored...
good luck!

Ooo my God! I did not know that there is a further part of the post. I still read this page: forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16808940&postcount=2
and there the last point is 1.8. I just now checked the link in your first answer.
I'm sorry, my fault. But thanks to you I know what to do next.
Now I have the last tree questions:
1. Because just now I understand the difference between A2SD+ and Data++ I'm wondering which one to choose options:
a) installation LeeDroid HD 3.3.3 GB-Port-R5 Data and AlphaRev?
b) or installation LeeDroid HD 3.3.3 GB-Port-R5 A2SD and fix Move-Dalvik-to-sdext?
What would you choose?
I read already the differences and I do not know which is better/fast
2. If I chose options (1a) and installed AlphaRev I must install LeeDroid HD 3.3.3 GB-Port-R5 Data again?
3. On the alpha site is written:
"If you downloaded Bravo Data++, please notice the /cache partition is too small to hold Radio flashes from recovery. You can however flash the radio just fine with 'fastboot flash radio radio.img'."
So, if I chose the option (1a), I must to install another radio?

you've got this far, you might as well change hboot and install data++ version, you get more space for apps. keep dalvik on nand first, then if you start to run out of space you can flash the dalvik2sd script.
(just a note, you don't 'install Alpharev', you're going to flash cm7r2 hboot)

it's just saying that if you want to flash another radio and you have cm7r2 hboot, you cannot flash it from recovery, you must change it using fastboot commands (a different topic).
read sections 2.8 and 1.4 (again...)
going round in circles a bit...but you'll get there eventually.
keep reading, i remember being a little scared of going through it all, but it all worked out fine in the end
If your radio works best bet is just leave it alone. If its relatively recent (second bit starts with _5 at least!) it'll probably be fine.

Ok guys, thank you all for your help.
I did finally everything works as it should, but I am not happy with the camera. In carrying out photo in the room, the whole picture comes out very dark, enough with the lens sees a piece of window. Horrible! Photo using the lamps are identical. There is no difference. I've noticed that a Gingerbread has the process com.android.camera.apk in version 3.0, but a Froyo has the process com.android.camera.apk in version 2.0, but version 2.0 does not work on Gingerbread (I checked). So I do not want such thing.
So now I'm looking for another ROM. I have to find one that has HTC Sense and leave in peace my Radio. I wonder whether is Android 4.0 with HTC sense on Desire.
Suggestions?
If I found nothing, today evening I'm going back to the wersion 2.5 of LeeDroid.

many other sense roms for you to browse through.
remember leedroid 2.5 will not fit on cm7r2 hboot, so you have to change back to stock hboot before restoring.

[Q] Runnymede v6.1.1 SE Installation help needed.

Hy there,
I have a small problem flashing the Runnymede v6.1.1 SE on my HTC Desire. I browsed through the forum with no success finding a similar problem or a possibile slolution.
I have a HTC Bravo with CM7R2 HBoot, a class 6 sdcard with a 1 Gb ext4 partition and 4ext recovery installed.
I successfuly installed Runny Rom V6 on it with ax2sdx but when I try to get Runnymede installed it tells me that the installation went well but it will not go past the alpharev boot logo.
I successfuly instaled it with stock HBoot and manualy flashed ax2sdx script but then I got a lot of FCs while running the ROM.
After install I checked the partition on my internal memory using recovery and saw that my system partition had no free space, 145 Mb used and 0 Mb free while the cache partition was all free as well as my app part. I did wait for more than an hour, but nothing.
To be honnest I am running out of ideas.
Did I do something wrong?
Did I skip anything?
Is cm7r2 not good for Runnymede V6.1.1 SE?
I have to mention that I tryed flashing several times using a2sd, ax2sdx by amanrullz and also init-m with no success.
I truelly am sorry for any spelling mistakes I may have made as english is not my native languageand I did search xda forums aswell google for a possible answer with no results.
Thank you in advance.
Restpectfuly.

Hy,
As I said... I have read it form top to bottom several times.
In the installation process it recognizes that I have CM7R2 HBoot, my ext4 1024 mB partition. And i do have to mention that I'm not a noob in flashing ROMs, I did mine, my gf's and several of my friends, all of them different phones.
But this one just puzzles me. I just thought that I just missed something.
Any suggestions are more than wellcomes and I allways take any of them as costructive.
Best regards.

then i'm not sure then. i wasn't sure you read all of it because you seem to be flashing a2sd scripts a little randomly. for instance, in the FAQ it says "Another common reason is people installing AD2SDX on the stock HBOOT version. It WILL NOT WORK". if you're trying int2sd-m, you also need a different hboot altogether.
you seem to be doing everything else correctly though. with cm7r2, ext4partition and ad2sdx it should work after a full wipe.

Hy,
I tried the stock hboot and it worked with A2SD but wanted ax2sdx.
Flashed CM7R2 hboot and tryed again and it gave the option for it. After install I saved the install log. I saw in it that I have a lot of fails, files missing and no such directory.
The curious thing is that atm I am running Runny Rom v6 with the same config.
This really puzzles me.
Thanks for the quick replyes.
Best regards.

This is what you meant when you said that I should read the #4 post, wright?!
"(Q) I've installed everything and I keep getting a boot loop on first startup.
(A) Make sure the installer detects the correct version for your HBOOT (stock or CM7/r2). Another common reason is people installing AD2SDX on the stock HBOOT version. It WILL NOT WORK. Wipe everything and install again but this time select "generic A2SD" in the installer.|
I did. If I was using stock hboot than I couldn't use AD2SDX because I wouldn't have that option. I should know because I first tried it on stock hboot 0.93 and it was laggy as hell. That is the reason for changing my hboot.
Anyways thank you for your quick reply.
I just hope that at least someone with the knowhow will see my post and give a hand.
Respectfully,

i meant read the whole post, plus the pdf installation guide. i was only quoting a bit where there seemed to be conflicting parts.
if you have read it all several times and it's still not working, then i don't know, perhaps another sd card just to be sure?
i'm sure someone will be able to figure it out.
I eventualy managed to intall Runnymede AIO V6.0.4.3 SE but still no luck with the V6.1.1.
And as for the sd card... I just bought a new 6 class one.
Hopefuly someone will eventualy see my post a give a hand.

[HELP] Problems with Desire after recovery

Hi guys,
I´ve got a stock Desire with Android 2.2.2. (OTA update some two years ago). Some days ago I noticed my camera was not working nor did the flashlight app. After turning off and on the device a couple of times the flashlight started working again but not the camera. Trying to fix what I thought might be a software problem I went into Hboot menu and into recovery and selected reboot. Nothing seemed to have changed until i noticed my battery was only lasting for 4 or 5 hours when it used to last at least 1,5 days. Also, I just noticed my 3G mobile network connection is not working either.
How may I correct this? I've already tried a factory reset but without success. I was just looking at an youtube video from a XDA member about flashing RUU's and thought that it might do it. Is there a difference between flashing a RUU and a factory reset? I'm not very confortable doing it as I've never rooted or flashed any device, but I'm willing to take the chance...
Thanks for your support...
Flashing a ruu is basically reinstalling the stock firmware. Factory resetting is just wiping the data on the phone.
If you want to flash a ruu, check my sig. Download the 2.3 ruu. Don't change the zip name. Take the zip and put it on the root of your sd-card, and boot in hboot. Then select "yes" and wait.
This will upgrade your firmware to Android 2.3.3, which is faster than froyo, but it will wipe all your internal data.
merante ridicule
Thank you for your reply.
Now it´s clearer to me. Factory reset doesn't correct any system issues.
I already found the RUU i currently have on my phone, but maybe I could upgrade to 2.3. Does the RUU in your sig work for my Desire?
My data are:
Andriod version: 2.2.2.
Baseband: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-gfa401c
Software number: 2.29.405.14
Just a small update concerning the battery issue: it seems to be the battery itself which is the problem. I installed a new one last night and now battery behaviour is back to normal. I will try the old one again though, in order to be sure it's gone.
The ruu in my sig works for your desire. It actually works for almost every Bravo on the market.
Thank you once again.
I just managed to correct my 3G problem also. I didn't restore the network definitions after the factory reset (didn't know I had to or how it is done ), but after a quick call to tech support it is fixed.
Now I will probably give the RUU update a try and also root and s-off (must resaerch a little more - XDA forum has tones of good info :good...
In my sig, there's a Desire All Root guide. Check it out.

Hi, some developments and more help needed
Followed the guides above and now my Desire is rooted, s-offed using revolutionary and 4ext recovery is installed and I've partitioned my new 32 GB sdcard with 2GB ext4. Sadly, I've not updated to android 2.3.3 with the PB99IMG RUU, so I'm still with the 2.2.2.
But, even after sd partition, my available internal memory has not increased. What do I have to do to install all new apps on the sd?
If I update now for 2.3.3. using PB99IMG will I lose root and s-off? If I have to flash a new rom, which do you suggest? I'm used to the stock htc sense and don't really want to upgrade unless I have to.
I would really appreciate any suggestions...
Tks.
Don't use the RUU. You will lose root and s-off. Just install a custom rom, and your storage will increase.

Thank you for your reply :good:.
Could you please suggest a stable rom based on gingerbread with htc sense (early versions prefered) and also point out a detailed noob friendly tutoorial for flashing roms? I must do some more research but if you could point me out in the right direction it would be very useful
Sorry to be such a pain in the a**, but I'm just getting started in the rom world and not very tech inclined also...
Tks.
