What's the best solution to add proper Apps2SD? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Unbranded/Unlocked/Stock/Rooted HTC Desire GSM with Froyo
I'm struggling with the amount of space HTC have given the HTC Desire and wish to add proper Apps2SD support. A few questions please:
1. I'm using the stock HTC Desire Froyo firmware but the phone is rooted. Is this enough?
2. I've tried searching but come up with so many different solutions. Which is considered the easiest to implement and safest Apps2SD solution?
3. Where can I find instructions to implement this?
4. I've found this guide, is it recommended? - http://www.droid-den.com/phone-guides/phone-guide-how-to-add-apps2sd-to-the-htc-desire
Thanks

Simplest way is to Flash a ROM with it built in
Let someone more techie do the hard work
As long as you do a Nandroid backup first you can always get back to your original setup.
Dont forget you will need to create an EXT partition .... Go for the biggest you can to save having to redo it later.

Good point. I'm currently weighing up my options. How HTC ever though the Desire would have enough app storage is crazy.
Any idea what's the best solution to add proper Apps2SD in the mean time?

How do I do that? Thanks.

If you are rooted download ROM Manager from the market.
Create an EXT partition (using ROM Manager) - go for as big as you can spare on your SD card
Install Clockworkmod recovery (using ROM Manager)
Backup current ROM (using ROM Manager) - this can take up a fair chunk of SD card space
Download the ROM you want
Flash the ROM from SD card (using ROM Manager)
If you want Froyo id recommend LeeDroid A2SD version (this has Sense)
If you want Gingerbread id recommend GingerVillain (this doesnt have Sense)
Both are ideal 'starter' ROMS with clear instructions and simple to use
Read the first few posts for both ROMs to get full install details and tips
.... both are very fast and stable

* How about Sense 2.1 and Gingerbread?
* How much space is needed to store the system data that gets put on the SD card by this procedure? Or when it's finished will the EXT partition be empty?
Otherwise thanks a lot

. I'd backup my SD card and made sure it was empty before starting, so that's okay. I used Unrevoked to root. I'm pretty I'm already now running Clockworkmod recovery.

If you dont want to flash you should find some threads about installing Apps2SD - there are various 'versions' of this - but dont forget you still need to create an EXT partition first.

There are some ROMs about with Gingerbread and Sense. I havent tried any, they are mostly quite new and based on an Eastern model. Cant really advise. Im on GingerVillain at the mo and really dont miss Sense.
Try LauncherPro or even Regina Launcher and you will start to wonder what you ever saw in Sense

Do you have any links to recommended methods?
I've thought about installing a new rom but am perfectly happy with the stock Desire ROM to be honest. I've tried Launcher Pro Plus, it's excellent but I prefer HTC Sense. Battery life and storage space are the two things that bug me. This forum is a minefield to those who don't know what they're looking for. The Desire developers forum doesn't list the ROMs by their "known names" .

Can someone let me know the best App2SD solution please?
I'd be happier just implementing this than a new ROM. I'm happy with the stock one I've got TBH.

anyone???........
flash clockworks latest recovery instead. can be found in a zip file to flash or can be found in the newest version of unrevoked. the recovery developer has a full list on his site which im sure you can find if you search for it and you can flash that.
once you flash that do a full wipe of the system from the recovery menu. and flash any zip. it should work.
Could be that those roms use a2sd+ and you will need a ext3 partition to use them. Have a search on here to find how to partition your sd card.
a2SD+ is optional.
for it to work you need an ext2/3/4 partition on your sd card depending on what rom you are using. i think a full wipe should do the trick. im just trying to get the user to update to the latest recovery image.
Edit: P.S. in wrong section of forum. dont mind helping but it should be posted in Q & A.
I got the same problem but mine is crazy reboots on non sense roms.
I think it's the kernel that's not stable on some handsets.

[Q] Why am i having problems with different roms!?! HELP ASAP

Well every time I try to flash a new rom it just goes in a bootloop. I know that when i create a nandroid backup it skips sd ext. Does missing my sd ext cause major problems and how do i fix it?

Not have the partition is not going to affect it, other than that message you're seeing. Have you tried restoring a known working backup?
This is posted in the wrong section BTW
Edit: You also want to make sure you fallow instructions to the letter and do a full wipe before flashing any ROM.
before this thread gets capped -
im not the best guy to be taking advise from... lol
but when this happened to me - 3 rom flashes in a row, all looping ...
my "fix" was to full wipe twice
flash new rom - let boot all the way until everything gets done syncing "including" any market updates
then reboot and do your kernal, or theme if wanted...
even if you do a nandroid, wiping twice helped me alot...
good luck
that helped a lot ig but i still want to fixc this sdext thing

To fix the sd-ext problem, you have to first back up EVERYTHING on your SD card to your computer, then you can use ROM Manager to partition your SD card and create the SD-EXT partition

Not having an SD extension is not going to affect your rom flashing. It's not a problem. All it allows is for moving of apps to the SD card to conserve internal storage space, which is kinda unnecessary unless you have a bajliion apps.
Full wipe. Wipe EVERYTHING you can inside ClockworkMod Recovery: Data, Cache, and Dalvik Cache (Under the Advanced menu option)
And if you do have the SLCD screen (Hardware 0003) find an SLCD compatible kernel and flash that after every rom and you're gold.

There is nothing to fix. It is completely normal and you'd be wasting space on your sd card by creating a partition that odds are you'll never use.
My bad, they're right, my mistake for calling it a problem, that implies that it NEEDS to be fixed, which isn't the case lol good catch guys

what does this mean?

can anyone tell me why my htc desire is stuck at this screen when i put in the battery?

well, i can't post a pic since not allowed to link until after 8 posts
it looks like a boot screen with 3 android dudes on the bottom.
any ideas?
Your stuck at the bootloader. Means that there is no boot.img. You've done something to it. Just flash a rom and it'll be fine. Don't forget to wipe data.
ok, thats positive news so far
the things is, i think its water damage but not much water at all really. just a bit from snowing while skiing.
the power and volume buttons do not seem to respond AND the ohone turns on by itself when i insert the battery.
is it still just a case of 'flash a ROM'? or is there more?
oh, and here is the image..... finally,

You don't have root or a custom recovery, correct? You just want to go back to the stock Froyo?
I think if the power buttons don't work it may be a bit of a problem selecting options in that menu, since the power button works as "select" in that menu.
I think you could boot to recovery using command prompt, but I am not 100% sure about that.
Also, are you rooted? Do you have a custom recovery installed?

Do you have a note of which rom was installed in your device? Is it carrier locked? Branded?
Select the newest RUU that fits your phone & carrier from http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/. Extract the ROM, rename to PB99IMG.zip, place in root dir of sd-card and reboot. Should do everything else automatically.
don't really follow the whole ROM question?
my phone has android v2.2, is NOT branded, is NOT locked and NO rooting.
and i should add that i am sweden if that matters.
The file you download from shipped roms is an exe file. When you execute the file it will extract a couple of files to your harddrive. Among those is a file named ROM.zip. That's the one you're looking for.
When I extracted it the file was here C:\Users\*User Name*\AppData\Local\Temp\{722DC7D5-7B69-4EBC-B6FB-B63AE38C01DE}\{50F2F878-636A-496F-A7CB-544C067E0C4B}
The ROM on shipped ROMs are all the standard carriers version that are unmodified.

Yeah but there are different versions of 2.2 depending on carriers etc, thats why I was asking!
I *think* any of the ROMS here with RUU at the beginning & WWE in the filename should work. (I am not 100% sure about this, as I have not had an official rom installed for AGES).
You will then have to follow sonoftobit's instructions I think, don't ask me how to extract the ROM though, as I don't know how to do it!
PS sonoftobit - Ignore this liquidmonkey!
If you go to the CM7 nightly thread and go to the 2nd post, Kali has a script for enabling Apps2SD. That is what I am running, tried to use S2E but it screwed things up royally and I had to restore a Nandroid!
Yeah, I had the same problems with S2E. I'm using DarkTremor App2SD now which has worked flawlessly ever since (both Sense Froyo and CM7). Also there's A2SDGUI for DarkTremor now which makes it even better.

why on earth would you write that?
so check it out!!!
i have had the phone off for a few more days and then put in the battery and BANG, it started up after a little while.
problem was that my battery only lasted 10 seconds so i was not able to fully test things.
then i put the battery in again and i was back where i started, crappy boot screen.
is there something in the phone that keeps memory of the boot screen and then disapates after a day which would explain why it started today.... or?

[Q] A noob with no understanding of Oxygen

First of all a lil history of this problem:
My girlfriend purchased this phone a while back, and then i got it from her. totally unmodded, everything worked.
after which i cave it to her friend, which is where i lost track of it.
Now. finally i have it back. and someone has installed Oxygen onto it.
Not having any knowlage of Oxygen i do not quite understand how to be rid of it, seeing as now the camera wont record video on high settings (a feature which i kind of use the phone a lot for)
I have hard reset many times and nothing has helped, my only explnation is it is Oxygen.
what do you guys think? and if so. how do i remove it?
Either install another custom rom(leedroid) via the custom recovery, which it'll also have installed.(You will still have root and the abilities it gives you)
Or run a ruu which will return it to the completely stock state.(you'll lose root)
I or someone else can help you out with both if you chose which solution you like the best.
The simplest thing you can do is find a ROM you like the look of in the Development forum, Assuming you want Sense back, you can use something like LeeDroid, if you quite like an AOSP ROM (Senseless), you can try Cyanogen it has a 'HQ' video function.
Download the ROM(s), drop them onto the SD card, turn the phone off, hold volume down and the power button and it will boot into Fastboot, choose Recovery using the volume rocker. Let it load up, wipe the phone using the trackball and selecting factory reset, or whatever it's called, clear the cache and then click install ZIP from SD option. Choose the ROM from the SD card, let it install then reboot and you'll have a fresh new Gingerbread 2.3.3 Sense ROM with HD video recording or a fresh new Gingerbread 2.3.4 AOSP ROM with HD video recording.
It might help if you read a few guides about rooting and all that. It might help you understand why and how it got there.

I did try installing another rom as far as i can tell but i think i may have gotten confused when doing it.
I just downloaded unroot-desire-froyo-2.10.exe
but unsure what to do with that.
If possible installing one of the other roms would be cool.

(sorry dont know how to double quote)
one of those would be ACE, the one with HD video sounds good. I read somewhere its harder to unroot a device from Oxygen, but im not really sure if "harder" means "impossible".
I HAVE done a small amount of research on rooting devices, i just got confused with it all.
I'm used to Jail Breaking iPods which is simple (iOS is simple?)
but HTC is a whole new ballpark for me.
thanks for any help.
and i would need a step by step on how to install Cyanogen
You don't need to understand oxygen, you just need to breath it.
I think it might be best for you to install HTC snyc and run an RUU to put it all back to stock? if you liked it that why, or like others have posted just do some research on installing roms. I have acesmod007 running on mine and it's fab and it is just like stock but with all the extra bells and whistles.

SGYPRO - B5510 New Custom Rom

hi
i found this rom from CM Forum and share in there i hope you like it
Made a great rom for the GT-B5510:
It is a modified stock rom with these features:
-Rom is debloated, without anyting broken and is still very Samsung.
-All software in the ROM is up-to-date
-Yahoo crap and thinkfree office removed(I needed tha space in rom, and a much better Kingsoft office is 100% free on market)
-Rom has a CUSTOM KERNEL supporting o.a. Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, SWAP Support, IPTables support (For droidwall of avast), inti.d support, wifi sleep bug fixed.
-Rooted (includes latest version of SU)
-Inlcudes Root explorer with support for symbolic-links
-Adfree updated version of Blackmart in ROM
-Included a version of ClockWorkMod recovery that works perfectly on GT-B5510 can be used to make backups. Installing the rom is a easy as restoring the backup I made of my rom(user data wiped) same as flashing with odin only a lot easier and can be done from SD card!
I also have the stock CELG1 rom that can be flashed with ODIN 1.85 and a tool called Odinatrix that can split any file from Samfirmware in 3 files Odin can use.
Before you would install this rom you need to make 3 partitions on a CLASS 10 A brand Sandisk, Samsung or SONY, micro SD card.
Else swapping would destroy your SD card real soon!
Use ubuntu to make these:
1st partition FAT32 (total sdcard size minus 5 GB)
2nd partition Ext3 (4GB)
3rd partition LinuxSwap (1GB and do not give a name, make empty)
Swap is default enabled, you don't have to do anyting if you make the partitions and install my ROM, swap will be enabled. You can chek by running terminal emulator and type "free"
This rom is extremely fast, you won't believe the revamp. Your phone will be a Linux PC!
When you have it working:
Then go to market and install:
-LinkToSD from my friend Bullent, this allows you to install many apps.
-Storage analyzer (So you know what takes space in the /data/data folder)
-Next Launcher
After this, you will forget Cyanogen soon since now you can customize and your launcher is fully 3D
I just need a place to put it online, any suggestions where is a good place?
If you have an A brand Micro SD, and want my rom now you could contact me: mobile DOT unclexnl AT gmail DOT com
I could add them to my google drive, I think I can Email you the files then.
I want this complete toolbox for the GT-B5510 online somewhere, who knows a good place for me to put it on? Where I'm able to update the rom with new version I will make.
Forget Cyanbogen, it is a deodexed rom that means, all dalvik-cache will be on internal storage, with only 180MB of that, it's not fun!
My rom is maximum odexed (not more room in rom for more odex) this way as much as possible from that 180MB of storage stays free.
