Partitioning MicroSD with EXT First - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have 8GB MicroSD card, when I try to partition it using GParted, and I partition it with:
FAT32: 6.5GB
EXT4: 1.00GB
It shows an error next to the EXT partition, and it happens with all EXT (ext2,3 and 4).
I read somewhere to partition the EXT first and it worked, my questions are:
1. How to move my data back to the FAT partition if I use windows? (as windows recognize the first partition only, and since it is ext, it won't recognize anything)
2. If question 1 was solved, will it work to use the partitioning that way? As I read that FAT should be first.
Thank you.

What you could do is boot into recovery and use the SD partitioning in there. That's ifyou have CWM version 3. Rom Manager will also do it. You could use that as a starting point and then just upgrade it to ext4.

Just use Rom Manager to format. Easiest way imho

How to create ext3 partition on SD-Card under Windows

This post is for people scared of Linux (like me)
I finally found a way to partition a SD-Card under Windows. I tried more tools, but only one was able to work with SD-Cards. Here's what you need to do:
1. Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard (google it, i cant post links)
2. Resize original FAT32 partition to make room for the ext3 one. If you have enough space, the data on the card shouldn't be affected, but make a back-up just in case.
3. Create the ext3 partition on the space made available and apply changes
The first partition should be FAT32, and the second ext3, make sure you have them in this order.

Almost all custom partition managers can do this in Windows-Partition Magic, Paragon, Or Gparted with VMWare
They can, but not on SD Card. Windows doesn't support partitions on memory cards. I tried Partition Magic, Paragon, Easeus, none of them work.
I didn't try Gparted with VMWare tho, you might be right about that.

Paragon works for me on Windows..And Gparted is what I use
Strange, it didn't work for me (see attached pics).
Just install the latest ClockworkMod, or Amon-RA and do it through recovery.

It's useless, you need a ROM that supports it.
quick question - if I create an ext3 partition using this method or any other way, and then move the apps I had on SD (the old way) back to internal, will it then move them to the ext3 partition automatically? I just want to make sure I have this right myself before I attempt it.
I'm using Oxygen 2.3 ROM RC-6 which supports apps2sd etc.
thanks in advance for any replies.

See mine..
I'm using 9.0 Pro, you're using 10.0 server, if that helps..
I still prefer Gparted though..On Vmware.

The a2sd+ script is built in, it executes at installation. Best way would be to use Titanium to backup ur froyo a2sd apps, wipe+install a2sd+ custom rom, use the option of Titanium, to move to sd.
and how do you want to put data on the ext3 partition ? ... you will need linux, its the best way...

EDIT:
Didn't work, SD could not be mounted under Android or Clockworkmod
Did the partitioning under Clockworkmod
partition works, but..
i tried minitool and easueus, both partiotion my 16 gb sd card, but...
I use miui rom, xpart(data2ext). the script works, but the phone is slow as ........
someone any idea?
i also have a 8 gb card, same partitions, but no problem..
any idea how i can tets my 16 gb card?
Minitool is crap. Haven't used easeus but its still under Windows, which is a no no
Gparted is the only decent tool that will nicely partition an ext partition on your sd whilst aligning it properly. This is both my personal and professional opinion.
Now because it doesn't run in windows, its a bit more long winded but so much more worth while.
Virtual machine (vmware player) is the best method. There is a link to a guide to set this up in my signature

[Q] Problems with A2SD (non Froyo Version)

Hi there,
I have a little problem with a2sd.
I partitioned my 16 GB sd-card to 15GB Fat32 and 1 GB ext3.
My actual rom is AuraxTSense-8.1.1. Everything is fine ... the Desire says
640 MB ram left for applications ... that's ok.
Same when I flash MIUI. All is ok ... ok MIUI is not my favorite rom, so I want to flash the new AuraxTSense_8.4_Official_OTA_2.2_FRF91_A2SD+.zip, but there is
the problem. This rom did not notice my ext3 partition for apps, although it is an A2SD+. Same with LeeDrOiD_V2.4_A2SD.zip. On all flashing session I did a full wipe.
Now I'm back to the AuraxTSense-8.1.1 with working A2SD.
I searched the inet and forum, but I didn't find any good clue. Only hints how
to partition the sd-card. And my partition seems to be ok.
Hmm ... anyone any hint for me? AuraxTSense-8.1.1 is a bit unstable, it reboot without any reason once a day, MIUI is not mine ... I love sense ...
Thanks for your help ....

Possibly wrongly partitioned?
Try to re-partition it.
Download Gnome Partition Editor (GParted Live) here on CD or USB.
Read the documentation at on GParted website ~ how to partition your drive? (Most answers of your questions are there).
Backup your SD card data to PC before start partitioning.
Boot into GParted Live on CD or USB (Make sure that your motherboard first boot is either CD or USB).
Follow onscreen instructions to get GParted Live loaded.
Note – select your SD card as the drive. DON’T select your hard drive.
Delete every partition on SD card.
First create a primary FAT32 partition.
Then create another primary ext(2,3 or 4) partition ~ 1GB or more.
Exit GParted Live and back to Windows.
Copy back your data to SD card.

please try this:
Take a Usb-stick.
! YOUR DATA FROM YOUR STICK WILL BE LOST, BACKUP BEFOR GPARTED INSTALL!
! BACKUP YOUR DATA FROM YOUR DESIRE SD-CARD, ALL DATA WIL BE LOST USING THIS METHOD!
Download gparted, install it using unetbootin.
start gparted form your usb-stick.
Mount your sd-card in clockwork-recovery.
Remove all partitions in GParted from your desire sd-card.
create a new partition form about 1Gb ext-4.
then create a new partition (fat-32) that fils the rest of your sd-card.
Note: the ext-4 partition needs to be in front of the fat-32 partition.
restore your desire sd-card data.
I hope this helps
@davebugyi: This was the exact way I partitioned my sd-card ... strange ...
@Keon91: The ext4 partition before the fat32? I thought ext after fat ... ok let's give a try ... must it be ext4 or is ext3 ok? I heard ext4 reduces sd-card life?
Thanks ....
TechZombie ...
as I can remember I had my ext4 partition in front of my fat32 partition.
when I view my partions in gparted ext4 is in front of fat32.
fat32 has label : sba1.
ext4 has label : sba2.
I never heard ext4 would reduce sd-card life. In the insertcoin thread they recommend a ext4 partition.
Finnaly I solved it ...
First I tried ext4 in from of fat32. Problem: Windows didn't notice the fat32 partition.
@Keon91: The lables of your partitions show that in your configuration the fat32 is also in front of the ext partition.
After this, I partitioned again with gparted to 15gb fat32 and 1gb ext3 ... both primary ... and now ... i don't know why ... the ext3 is found by a2sd ...
Thanks to all ...

[Q] Partition issue, please help!

Hi everyone. I'm a new android user (recently got an HTC Desire) and i have an issue with the partitioning of the sd card.
First of all i apologize if i posted in the wrong section, or if this problem has been already disscused (i didnt really find anything). I am new at this so sorry for the noob question!
I have rooted the device (all the steps from a great guide here at xda) and installed the leedroid rom with app2sd. I tried using the gparted method but i think i missed a step or something cause it didnt work.
So, i tried partitioning with the ROM Manager, choosing 512mb ext partition and 32 mb of swap. After rebooting, in the storage menu it shows only 134MB of available space (63 mb available before using the rom manager).
Why is it only showing 134 mb and not 512 or more ? Did i did something wrong or should i try gparted again ?
You have to partition your sd-card again.
Download GParted here: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
Start your Computer with it.
Put your sd-card in a card-reader, connect it to your computer and partition your sd-card so:
0 MB for SWAP!!
512 MB - 1.5 GB for ext3
Rest: FAT32
Source: http://leedroid.com/bravo-wiki/partitioning-your-sd-card-ready-for-a2sd
Sorry for the late reply and thanks for helping me. I tried again with GParted creating a 512 mb ext3 and the rest FAT32. I didnt create a swap. When i turned on the phone it said it cannot mount the SD card. I tried wiping the phone and put the ROM on the SD again. In the recovery menu when i choose install zip from SD it says something about the SD not being mounter (dont remember exactly). So i had to reformat the SD again and made the whole card FAT 32, thats the only way it let me install the ROM and mount it.
Any ideas ?

You need to erase partitions and make FAT partition first. Make sure they're both primary, not logical partitions. You can lose the swap partition.

[Q] How to make ext4? Im stuck here...

Hello.
I'm having a big problem with ext4 fromatting partion.
I have using GParted program (bootable cd), and everything was great, program created 2,79 GB FAT32, and 1 GB ext4, like in the video tutorial on your site http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 (step five).
And I noticed, on the end of the video, when the guy is checking on htc desire space (about 2:40 min on youtube) he had 13,92 GB on FAT32 of 14,92 GB. But I have full 3,92 GB FAT32, which is the same sioze a micro sd. I dont know where I am doing wrong?
Then, I tried ROM manager, but after restart, I have blue android and triangle with !...and says that on disk e: something goes wrong ABORTED!
Do you have some idea, what can I do?
Thank you very much.
You did something wrong with gParted, delete all partitions, make one FAT32 partition and format the SD.
Then try making EXT partition in recovery, if you know how to you should change recovery to the 1 in my signature, it works flawlessly.
Nope, I formated fat32 and ext4, and when I connect htc desire to pc, and put Insertcoin.zip, its blank sd card. And then I see notification on htc, that is my sd card blank, and unsupported filesystem...
I will try and third way, that ext4recvery...
or you can try MiniTool Partition (@k3lcior yes I remember what you said).
Note: Some say that you can get errors when partitioning with windows, but I've never had any problems. Up to you.
Gparted is an awesome tool to use ??? I don't see what your doing wrong ...
Format card - New Partition - Fat 32- 2.79 gb -
Then new partition - create Ext 4 at the end 1gb....

Partition questions and sd specs.

Please direct me to an idiots guide to SD partitioning...
I have been flashing my desire since the summer. And well i forgot how i initially setup my SD card.
I wanted to treat my self to a new CLASS 10 SD card. But when it came to partitioning the card i got lost.
Is it as simple as using clockworkmod to set partition size to 1-2Gigs? and swap to 0?
With reference to Ext2,ext3 and ext4 are these all multiple partitions? None of these where options within clockwork or rom manager
Anyway i did my partitions using clockwork and installed a new rom i had never used before runnymede. I found performance extremely sluggish and slow. Of course i did 3 new things at once. new card, new partition and new rom... could be one or all these causing me headaches..
Sorry to ramble on. Bottom line:
- Could i be kindly directed to a SD partitioning guide?
- Is the Desire compatible with 2,4, and 10?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
[Video Tutorial] Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide UPDATED [04/04/11][Video Tut]
hope it helps.
The class 10 SD card should be OK with your desire.
The people in the know mostly recommend not using ROM Manager to partition SD cards. I would suggest try using GParted.
In terms of ext2, 3, 4 - I would recommend ext 3 for your SD card partition - it is safer than ext 2 partitions.
I would suggest an ext 3 partition size of 1024mb or even 2048mb (that should cover you for most present roms and most future roms).
I am not as knowledgeable as some of the other guys here but I will give you an useful link:
http://www.techcredo.com/android/tu...-for-a2sd-with-gparted-on-a-windows-pc-ext234
I usually create a bootable GParted USB drive and use to partition my SD cards.
I hope that helps,
KKH
I have been trying to create an ext4 partition using GParted. I did all necessary steps - will quickly run thru, just so you know:
1. Burnt ISO and accessed thru boot menu (running XP/SP3, btw)
2. Deleted existing allocation.
3. Created new primary partition as FAT32
4. Allocated "free space following" as 1024
5. Specified the unallocated memory (1024) as ext4.
There was no error in the operation.
However... When I tried to load stuff to the SD card, Windows prompted me to format the card before using. It made no sense but I couldn't do anything. And by formatting it, I lost everything that GPL had done in the first place.
I went over the process again, to no avail.
Does anyone know where I've possibly gone wrong? Please help.
Which recovery are you using?
I had the same issue, vista kept asking me to format SD card before use.
I fixed this by making my first partition in GParted the fat32 and the second partition ext3.
I think windows accesses the first partition by default and is happy with fat32.
If your ext4 was the first partition, windows would ask to format that ext4 in to fat32 before use.
I hope that helps.
thanks i should be good to go now..

If you install 4EXT Recovery, you won't ever need a bootable disk to partition your SD card. You'll be able to do it straight from recovery I suggest you to give it a try!
My recovery is 4ext and I used this recovery to make partitions of my class10 sd card.
I also use this recovery to align my partitions.
You can also use the freeware "minitool partition wizard" under win xp instead of gparted.
Good luck.

If the OP uses this tool, he needs more than good luck. It's like rootSU says in his sig: "Don't be lazy and make GParted your first choice...". So please do not trust in windows software which wants to handle linux partitions.
Use rom manager. Simple as that
