[Q] Ultimate Noob Rooting Thread

So I am considering rooting my phone, and I have been poking around and noticed all of the "essential" rooting threads are ages old, I have had my evo 4g for a week, and coming from a noob considering rooting I have a few questions (secondly im sure most of my questions just involve digging, but I am the kind of learner who needs to see everything in one or two places, not 20 or 30 different ones) so here goes my questions...
1. Why should I root, what are the advantages
2. What is the difference between deoxed and odexed
3. what is the step by step guide to rooting (im running snow leopard, but can get access to windows, would prefer to do it in snow leopard)
4. What are roms, kernals...other lingo and definations I need to or should know before rooting
5. what does rooting disable
and 6. Whats the coolest thing i can do once I am rooted
A special thanks to any one willing to take there time and explain these items to me rather then link me to another thread.

What OS did you come from?
Yeah, it's kind of important to be willing to read a LOT. Or you probably shouldn't even bother. If you don't wanna read and really examine, then I would just stay stock. Evo is a fine phone stock.
'What's the 'coolest'thing you can do?'
(Aside from reading), I would say, that would be up to you what's coolest.
ROM is read only memory. Kernel, as I understand it, is the resource your ROM relies on to run, and greatly impacts battery life, and various functionalities. And allows for overclocking/undervolting, etc.
Root would disable/disallow you from accepting OTAs directly from Sprint

I have done some reading on it, just as i said everything is spread out, and I have a very difficult time combining stuff from different areas, I am currently using osx, and all of the noob rooting instructions im able to find need files to be modified in windows/linux (osx is unix based)

Read the sticky thread at the top of this Q&A forum. The thread is called "Common misconceptions and useful information." ricsim included some really good pointers at the top of the thread and I have my own contributions at the bottom of the thread. I know you'll probably be a little annoyed by the fact that you have to find your own answers but it's critical that you learn what you're doing to your phone and why. Unless you do you'll turn into the next user who gets flamed for posting something similar to "OMG WHRE r Da GOOGLKE appzzzz" or anything resembling that.
What I'm trying to say is the rest of us learned by researching and we have faith that you can too.

Since i posted this, I have been doing some clicking around, and im very very slowly understanding stuff, i will read through the mentioned thread, and the reason im asking these questions is an attempt to help me understand some more of this, i really dont want to risk bricking my phone (however low the risk is) with out knowing what im doing

Hi i'm Drie and i wanted to introduce myself and say i find most of the information here helpful and useful. I am very interested in rooting my phone and I must say that a lot of you have some great ideal but they are not working for me. I know there are some SUPER TECHS on this sight that may want to entertain a new user by giving her a step by step manual (rooting for dummies) on how to root an HTC EVO 4g.
Ive read thread and watch lots of videos and still my phone is not rooted.... HELP

Welcome to the site; it's a great place.
From what I have found is, it is easier to do things by reading directions; I never get things done in the videos.
Oh and a big problem for a lot of people; when downloading and putting the update or bootloader zipped folders onto the phone, only name them root or update or whatever, leave out the .zip part; that messed me up and I was clueless for an hour or so.

when i say that i tried to root the phone, that means i made an attempted at it, but since i know nothing about rooting a phone every word seems foreign to me. I need instuctions from the very beginning.

I have to agree with quite a few of you here - I read threads here for about 2 to 3 weeks before ever signing up - finally I had to lol (got soo many questions) - also went to post in the development section and found out I couldn't post there - though I can't remember why I was going to post there first - maybe that was where one of the instruction threads I was reading was posted

I really don't get you.. You start threads all over so there is no excuse for you not knowing that Questions go in Q&A. You must know the rules (at least somewhat) because you harped on Garwynn and I for going off topic.
It's people like you that tick me off. And I hope you don't come back with a reply like "I'm just a kid" since we have 13 year olds here who are developers.
You have started threads and people tell you to use the search function and you would have found your answer. Hell, you don't even look outside of the E4GT Section.. Just like your question on deodexing.
You've asked for help, I tried to advise on other issues and you completely ignore what I or any other very helpful replies you've had.

Yes it can be done. It will require some foot work and very heavy reading on your end.

[Q] [NEED HELP] I Am Using Verizon Galaxy S4 On T-Mobile.

As the title states, I am using my unlocked Verizon galaxy S4 on T-mobile. The problem I am having is that because it is loaded with all of Verizon's software it doesn't function the same way as an S4 from T-Mobile would. I get edge, 3G and, H+ Data connectivity but, it is spotty and more edge than anything.
My question is:
Is there a way to basically transform this Verizon phone into a T-Mobile phone by flashing T-mobiles radio firmware, Kernels and, OS? I cannot find this question being asked anywhere and I have been scouring the internet for 2 days. I am rooted and running CWM recovery. I have been an avid modder since the release of the first Cyanogen mod for the T-Mobile G1. I guess what I'm saying is, I don't care how technically complicated it is. If it is AT ALL POSSIBLE,,, I just want to do it.
I am not trying to be mean in saying what I am about to say next so please, no one take this the wrong way.
If you do not know the answer to this question please do not post one. Do not post a response of NO just because that's what you've heard or assume is correct. I am posing this question to experienced developers NOT modders like myself who simply use others work for our devices. I did find in a Google search where someone posted a tutorial on how to do this but, for reasons that I am not aware, the thread was discontinued.

This paragraph is unnecessary. If we are posting in the QnA section we are either providing our knowledge or telling toy that this question has been answered already. There is rarely any trolling on here. (At least in this section) If we are replying to your question with an answer than it is probably the beat answer we can provide. if we reply with a few word response than take it. We do this on our free will. Take any reply you get seriously no matter how long the post.
Now on topic, you can only flash an m919 ROM on any other s4, besides the i9500. Not sure about radios, but DO NOT flash an m919 Kernel* on your Verizon s4. Only do it if you want a fancy paperweight.

I have been on here for years. there have been many times over the years that I have helped others do something that some said to be impossible and there are time when people have helped me do things that were said to be impossible. that paragraph was not aimed at you so do not take it personal. I've just been on here long enough not to be irritated by trollers but, rather by people who do not have any clue what they are talking about answering questions they do not know the answers to simply so they can attempt to look smarter than they are. if this does not apply to you then ignore that paragraph but, you cannot say that it wasn't necessary. You say, "we are providing our knowledge" this is a broad statement that you cannot make because you can only speak for yourself and those that you know personally. unfortunately there are many more than you and your friends on the internet. So if you understand that that wasn't directed at those that are helpful, there there is no need for debate

Verizon is CDMA, T-Mobile is GSM. Different radio hardware required.

There are both GSM and CDMA radios in the galaxy s4. That is how I'm using it on t mobile now. This has been a topic of discussion since the phone was released and responses have been back and forth as to whether it was possible to use it on a GSM network at all. then it was discovered that it is in fact a world phone.it is simply carrier locked which under normal circumstances would make you right however, mine is unlocked and able to utilize both. Try helping yourself. I know, it's a tough concept.
There are three or four threads right on the very front page of this subforum that will answer all of your questions.
Have a cow? I'm not having a cow. I'm sick of people that can figure out how to post a completely redundant question without following rule number one of the forum.

Just asking about vid, rooted my previous phones before, upgraded to note 4 . Been waiting root and os upgrades. Been reading alot about how to root this phone. Look like this is alot if steps to do so. And alot of miss communication how to do so.... that's why I ask about a vid.. Geez

There are a few videos on YouTube but the rooting is scary. My N4 is my only phone so I read up and took the plunge. It all worked out but not without a few hangups. People on XDA will help you out of a jam if needed.

Joined just to post this. I've been lurking the forums for a long time as I have a rooted Note 4 but never had a reason to post. You showing very little respect for your peers on the forums caused me finally create an account so my voice could be heard. If you still believe I'm a sock puppet you can google my username and find I am active across a wide range of forums and platforms. I'm in no way associated with blastoff but I have been in his situation before so I understand where he is coming from and have sympathy for him. He tried to be civil about it and you are throwing accusations at him about making puppets without any possible proof other than it being a new account. This is a place meant for people to converse, ask questions, and be friendly and yet somehow you have managed to do the exact opposite. I get that he posted a new thread instead of searching but instead of posting a snappy response about how he broke the rules and should help himself you could maybe show a sliver of kindness and welcome him to the forums and inform him that all his answers are in previously posted threads. This is blastoffs 2nd thread with the same question. Both times posting ridiculous questions about note 4 root. If he had searched, he'd have his answer, and that's the point. Douger1957 has assisted tons of people with root, unlock, firmwares, etc. So before you pass judgement, search a little yourself, and see how douger1957 responds overall, not just with trolls.

That's the thing , I read alot how to root. Rooted many other phones myself. Maybe my first post wasn't in the right spot... Tried to be very civil about it. But just got way to many negative vibes . I have read post , how to root in this forum . Never once this guy pointed me in the right direction... I really think this guy has failed this Forum. .. :/

Yes there's plenty of vids. I've rooted plenty of phones, but can't seem to root this one. The vids say use kingo root, but I tried every one I found and none rooted my note 4 verizon.

You did fail the forum. It sounds like you're usually pretty good on here, but there's almost a page of garbage here now because of your initial reply. This thread could have been 2 posts. "Is there a vid" and some time in the future "http://hereIsThe.vid".

Ok ......here's the thing...On July 9th Douger1957 gave blastoff a link to the threads that explain in detail the processes to help him get rooted and unlocked. Then exactly 10 days later blastoff starts a new thread asking for a video....sorry, vid...this isn't rocket science. No need for a second thread, no need for drama.....simply search first, help yourself, ask informed questions that show you've at least tried something, anything! .......root?......vid? Of course you're going to get a response with some frustration included. In the last couple of weeks more 1 post members have shown up than ever before, with disrespectful questions, comments, and responses. Wtf. They drop these questions, get helped, don't thank anyone, show no respect for the members that have helped the most. Tons of people come, ask, take, complain, and don't contribute or thank the devs. Hsbadr has complained about this very thing, hundreds of downloads and a minimal amount of thanks or donations. So, go ahead and say what you will, my opinion is, the people who are assisting others all the time, should get the benefit of the doubt when these situations arise. And the single post members should exhaust all avenues of search before asking questions about things that have 4 or 5 detailed threads already.
