CM7.0.2 upgrade questions - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I rooted my phone and flashed CM7.0 with no problems at all (thanks to the great noob-proof guide in the android dev forum). now I want to upgrade to CM7.0.2 but i have a few questions:
1) Do I just download CM7.0.2 then flash it via clockwork recovery?
2) Do I need to wipe data, cache and dalvik?
3) Do I need to backup my apps, data, contacts, etc.?
thank you very much!

1) Yes
2) No
3) No, but do a Nandroid backup within Clockwork before flashing

thanks Red John. one more question, do i need to reinstall the google apps package? I installed that when i flashed my CM7.0

In this case no.
For future releases, the post containing the CM updated version lists the latest Google apps package. Just compare previous gapps version vs the one mentioned in the thread.

[Q] Install cyanogen mod 7 or update first?

hey guys!
I want to install cyanogen mod 7 on my HTC Desire Z. However, i heard cyanogen mod 7 was based on android 2.3. I'm on 2.2. I'm rooted, but I was wondering if I can just install cyanogen mod 7 on 2.2 or do I have to update and if I have to update, will I have to unroot my device or can I just do it just the way my phone is now?
Thanks,

CM7 is a ROM, it'll completely overwright 2.2, which is also a ROM. This would be the same as updating a Windows XP system to Windows 8.
So, the short answer: just install.
If you're unsure how, grab ROM Manager from the Market, with that app you'll first install ClockworkMod Recovery and then install CM7.
And, as always, be sure to do a full backup incase something goes wrong.

thanks for your help, but i have another question. When i try to flash cyanogenmod, rom manager asks me to wipe cache and data. What does this do? Does it remove all my messages, whatsapp conversation and contacts? So in other words: what exactly will wiping cache and date delete/remove?
Thanks

When coming from a Froyo based ROM to a Gingerbread based ROM you need to do a full wipe which will, in effect, delete everything. Your apps will get redownloaded once you log on as will your contacts (if you have it set to sync) but to keep your messages (I'm assuming you mean SMS/MMS), download SMS Backup and Restore from the Market.
Remember, when you flash CM7, you also need to flash Gapps as Google Apps aren't included.

Oh, and once you're running CM7, you'll only need to wipe cache/dalvik when upgrading to the next CM7 release.

Please explain to me the need to do this, I have done about 50 (fifty) upgrades now, and (in between) never wiped cache or dalvik. And everything is working smoothly every time I flash, no problems whatsoever.
@timhesselmans; First read a few pages on this forum about installing a custom rom and the aftereffects it could produce. Always make a nandroid backup and back up your contacts and your messages.

Well, you're lucky then, as many people do have issues and wiping cache/dalvik fixes those issues; so, its a good habit to just go ahead and wipe those when flashing an update. It doesn't hurt anything, only takes a moment and remedies many of the issues people often run into.

[Q] Rooted Incredible sans market access

Alright so long story short, just bought a 2 month old incredible off my buddy because he is a mactard and HAD to have an iphone.
The phone was rooted but I wanted to start from scratch so I formatted the sd card and performed a factory reset (within the phone, not thru recovery). In doing so, I no longer have access to the market - simply says "you don't have this application installed on your phone" when i try to open.
What is my best bet? Can I just flash a new rom and instal it in recovery? Is it possible to unroot at this point?
PS - I haven't set up the phone on the Verizon network yet so could this be the reason I can't access the market?
Any advice is much appreciated!!
sounds like you need to install google apps.
It would help if you said which rom you're on or if you're running stock but it does sound like flashing Google apps could fix your problem. Latest version is 5/3/11.

Rom: The Ultimate Droid 3.3.0
Android Version: 2.3.3

Definitely try flashing Google apps, should get your market back.

THanks I'll try that...you wouldn't happen to have a link to the .apk would you?
Its not an .apk, its a zip file flashed through recovery. ROM Manager has a GAPPS section at the very bottom under "Download ROM".

Ah that's right, I remember reading that in another forum...
Say I want a different rom though..if I simply flash a new one, will my Google apps exist?
Sorry for the rookie questions, still navigating my way thru the world of root, appreciate your guys' patience!
Pretty sure Google apps only need to be flashed with aosp roms, every sense rom I've flashed had the market and typical Google apps included.

Question about updating arhd Rom.

I recently rooted and installed the arhd Rom and I love it. The Rom has just been updated and I am looking for some answers with regards to flashing this update.
I know the procedure is straight forward, however is there a way I can do it without losing my downloaded apps, data and the way I have configured my screens ?
I used an app to backup my stuff before but it did not store the data. Any help is appreciated.

If you are already running ARHD 6.1.x, you can flash the newest update on top of your current setup without any changes or losing data. No need to superwipe or anything. It's all based on the same base, the changes have been minor bug fixes or app updates here and there.
And just so we are clear, boot into cwm/EXT4 recovery and flash the updated ROM zip. Always a good idea to manually wipe cache and dalvik cache but it's all really straight forward.

installing a custom rom STEPWISE (long as i got an idea from)

okay i want all the experienced people on this forum to help me with this thing and i hope a lot of people would get help with this post
i am using HTC DESIRE HD on it's stock firmware that is 2.3.5 and htc sense 3.0, to start flashing a custom rom (cyanogen 7.2 as an example) i have to follow the following steps (PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG)
1) i have to root my device using the AAHK (link: http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74)
2) then to back up my contacts i have to use SMSbackup (which is available on the android market), have a backup on the sdcard and copy it to ur device
3) now i have to download the custom rom (cyanogen 7.2) (link: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=ace)
4) now i have rooted my device and i will copy this rom in .zip format into my sdcard and go into the recovery mode by turning off the phone and then holding power and volume down button
5) i have to backup my existing rom by running a nandroid backup in the backup/restore (it's visible in the recovery mode)
6) once the back up is done i'll have to formate my sdcard and format the cache
7) then i have to select the "flash .zip file from sdcard" and i am done
please tell me if this process is alright or is there anything that i am missing
secondly is there any way through which i can save my apps?
last but not the least, if i wanna flash this kernal (http://blackice.omca.co.uk/download/...7-2WCR-TUN.zip) what do i have to do?
POINT ADDED: IF U ARE USING ANDROID 2.3.5 AND SENSE 3.0 THEN U HAVE TO DOWNGRADE TO THE PRIOR VERSION OF SENSE I.E 2.1, HOW DO I DOWNGRADE USING THE AAHK kit? PLEASE HIGHLIGHT THIS
The steps are correct. Except at step 6 you wipe all partions except SD card (called superwipe).
And your appdata will be automatically restored whenever you reinstall a app if you got your phone synced to your Google account.
And you flash the kernel as you flash a Rom but you only wipe dalvik and cache.

What do i select in the recovery mode for step 6? And i have a spare 2gb sdcard can i use that for flashing the rom? This would help me save my songs and all

Which recovery do you use? And superwipe doesn't wipe ad card.
I'm not sure but try to sync all. Otherwise you could try titanium backup. Never used it but I have heard its good for saving appdata.

First of all you need to root before you can change the recovery. Download AAHK and read the effen manual.

Titanium backup works great. It restores all non system apps and data, everything works great except (in my case Viber, it crashes and I have to re activate account after each flash).
I'd also have a question on flashing kernels. I have flashed 5-6 different ROMs but never a kernel (It is possible that these ROMS had other kernels but I'm not sure):
1) do I flash kernel BEFORE or PRIOR to new ROM? (or it doesn't matter)
2) if iI fo superwipe script from android revolution, can I then flash ROM and KERNEL one after another? (no need to wipe dalvik again)
D.

just a small note which is written on the AAHK manual and Thread but to make sure u notice it is that don't downgrade tooooooo much "I.E 2.1"
if u want to downgrade so u can root... u either let the AAHK do the downgrade for u or u do it your self either ways u musn't get lower than 2.3.3 so u wont get in kernal problems "which i once got, and god it was BAD".
good luck

They are, just read the thread, there were a few corrections.
Make sure to read the manual called 'effen manual' a few times for the hack kit.

Also, if you have your google account synced to your phone right now, it'll automatically restore contacts when you re-restore your Google account on the new ROM.
Sometimes android market/play store will automatically begin restoring apps by redownloading them (along with data) and some other things. If you prefer titanium, make sure that the play store isn't doing this by going to my apps. If your phone is running really laggy even after a minute or two after you set things up, chances are google play is redownloading all your old apps and chewing up your phone's hardware and data.

I Will Tell You My Steps >>How I Rooted My Device To Install Custom ROM<<
1) I had Downloaded free Sms BackUp And Apps BackUp from Play store.
2) Then I just Backup-ed all My Sms and Apps.
3) Then I went on my contact--> Manage Contacts --> Exported All My contacts from Google as well as from My Phone to my SD card.
4) For my safety purpose I then copied all my data from my memory card to my hard disk.
5) Then I used AAHK Tool:-
# What it did was just downgraded my Radio(Internet Required)
# Then Rooted my device-->Super CID-->BusyBox-->4EXT-->and so on...

HTC Desire HD ROM issues

Hey guys,
I am using an HTC DHD for the last year, and i've encountered issues with different ROMs
These are the ROMs ive been using, varying from one to another, looking for the most efficient / best performance.
List of ROMs:
ICS
Cyanogen (many versions)
CodefireX (ace-4.2.2-SR15, ace-OpenMaster-SR19)
JellyBean
TrainWreck4.2nov18
ace_PAC_JB_4.2.2-v21.0.1_20130317-080548 - Currently using
So far the best ROM for performance is the one im using (ace_PAC_JB_4.2.2-v21.0.1_20130317-080548)
Yet i cannot open "Google play store", nor many other applications such as "Waze","iGo" even "Subway surfers" , i see the loading screen, and then the app just closes itself.
I'll be glad to have some assistance, maybe logs i can see.. any suggestion is welcome.
Thanks

The most efficient/best performance roms will be ones based on official firmware. Arhd6 etc.
As for the fc's, in application manager have you tried 'clear data' and 'clear cache' on the apps that are force closing?
You have flashed gapps?

- wipe data/factory reset
3) - Install ZIP from sdcard
