Hey guys,
I recently began tinkering further with my HTC Incredible to further push it's limits and abilities and have been loving it so far. Last night I came across a youtube video describing how to install/run Ubuntu on the droid and I figured it'd be fun to do "Just because".
What I started out with was an install of CyanogenMod 7.0.0-Inc , radio version 2.15.00.11.19 , and rooted by unrevoked latest version. I had the latest Clockwork recovery and all that jazz. I then flashed in radio version 2.15.00.07.28 and then ran unrevoked forever so that I could do the loopback thing so Ubuntu would install and now I get this "Permission denied" when I try to do anything in the terminal both via my computer ( adb shell ) and directly on the phone.
I can recover to before that point and life is good but it's about a week old and I'd loose messages and modifications I made to my setup since then. Yes yes, I know I should have backed up before then but I was a bit near sighted. I learned my lesson for sure and I'm glad it wasn't something more severe, but anyone have any ideas on how I can figure out what is stopping me or perhaps how to fix it? I appreciate your time.
Secondly , can someone point me to a good article on Radio versions, what they do, and how to pick the "Best one" for your setup? Thanks again!

PS : I can provide greater detail if needed. Just ask questions back.

Woops I forgot one last thing. After unrevoked forever I installed "BusyBox" installer app and ran it. It gave me a successful response though. Not sure if that'd matter or not. Thanks again!
Sounds like you lost the SU app, is it still in you app drawer or no? You can download it from the market if it is gone. Busybox gives you all the basic linux command line tools in one package.
As for the radios all they do is upgrade the firmware for the cell radio which has the possibility to give you a better signal/reception. I used to mess with them on my OG Droid, but they never seemed to improve it that much.
Thanks for the reply. When you say "SU" do you mean "Super User" ? Or is there something litterally called "SU" ?
Just want to clarify so I don't go off on a wild goose chase.

look for superuser in the market.
Oh it's there, I still have that. It's Superuser v2.3.6 Database version 5... Su Binary v2.3.1-ef , which according to it's self is the most recent release. Think I should just suck it up and reflash and redo everything I did and quit complaining? lol

Heh, I figured as much. I'm really impressed at how quick folks are to help around here. It's great. Take it easy folks
For radio testing what I've done is just flashed different radios then looked at my connection strength in settings>about phone. Did this while staying in the same physical location. The lower the dBm number, the better. You can also do 3g speed tests with apps such as speed test, but the results can vary alot regardless of radio just depending on time of day and other variables.

Cool, I didn't know that actually. Thanks!

Yea Yea, I know the most common question, yet I don't see anything for the newest version (3.26.651.6)
I am not looking for any special Rom, just a standard Root.. A one click would be great, but whatever you guys recommend would be awesome!
THANKS!!

First, 3.26 is not the newest version. The current OTA is 3.29.
Second, Look at unrEVOked to root both 3.26 and 3.29.
Edit: I just searched. http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
Just followed all that exactly, I have NO idea if it worked or not.. It went to the boot screen twice on mine and only once on the video and the video also showed it going into a dos type of screen "loading" things (on the phone)
MINE DIDNT DO ANY OF THAT..
This is nuts! How am I to tell if it is installed or not? The instructions dont tell you at all how to check!!

Restart the phone into boot loader. (Volume down + power.)
Does it say S-Off in the first line?
Yes? Then you should load into Clockwork by selecting recovery.
Also is super user app installed?
If yes to both, you should be rooted.
The dos screen was probably adb, just to show it was rooted.
If you open the tools folder with adb in it and type "adb shell" it should show a $ if its rooted and a # if it is not.
If you type "su" your phone should then show a superuser request, which also means you're rooted with super user access.
(I clicked though the videos but didn't see any dos screens. :-/)

learn how to use the search feature on this site, and read the instructions 3times before trying to do something you are not familiar with on your new phone. Rushing into things will only cause you problems...
if you show S-off in the bootloader menu then you have done the root correctly.
Goodluck.
do a search for "One Click How to Root the EVO with Unrevoked 3.21" by djR3Z
i just rooted my evo yesterday using the instructions in his post. it's the easiest and quickest method i've found. hope this helps.
Yea I rushed a little for sure..
But Im coming from a CE phone and very familiar with it..
Here is the problem... and I notice with many many other people to.
I wound up doing the 1 click rooting, but it took some digging and searching to figure out I needed an additional program, (SU)
It doesn't mention on almost every tutorial that you need to get a file managing program and the SU program.
Sure it teaches you how to root properly, but to actually benefit from the root you need the other files.
Well, in anycase, Im happy got what I wanted and what I wanted to work, works flawlessly
Thanks guys!
Unrevoked installed SU for me.
You can also get a flashable zip from the forums here.
And super user is also on the market.
Oh, btw...
Congrats!

They have not updated there root tool to crack the new HBOOT 2.02. Are they done with the EVO and moving on to other newer devices? I have a few friends that just got EVO's and they cant root them now because of the HBOOT version they have. Any help would be great.
Thanks,

Im sure they are working for an easy new root method patience man should be up soon

Ditto the above recommendation.
... worked for me.
Im just glad i rooted my phone just in time w toast method before this fiascal blows up.. Sorry peeps. Wish everyone Luck!
Sent from my phone.. I think using EViO???
That's weird... Unrevoked couldn't root my phone but I used their Unrevoked forever to do the NAND unlock... I have the 2.02 HBOOT...
yeah, i rooted 2.1 style, i keep kicking myself for not rooting my wife's phone at the time and then leaving it alone, now i don't know what way to go, as i never trusted the GUI methods

Why dont you like the GUI Method? It seems to be the safest hands down. Less steps = less problems. Unless unrevoked does something i dont know about, but its worked flawless for me the last 10 times i used it. Did it the old toast way 3 or 4 times, i prefer the ease of unrevoked... not that it was hard the other way. Definitely doesn't require being kicked though lol
when i was trying to root under 2.1 version, the GUI methods didn't work, and i jacked some **** up too. i had to go all the way back with a RUU. Plus using manual method gets you used to ADB/Fastboot commands etc. If a lot more people started out that way, lot less simple questions probably wouldn't get asked. Nothing against that team, just my personal preference, when you do GUI, you don't get all the principles behind what your doing, so you just expect everything to work.

What HBOOT version do you have? Is it below 2.02? That would be the reason unrevoked worked for you.
I loaded the recovery screen and it said HBOOT was 0.94.0000 Does that sound right? I just did everything I saw in a How To video. Downloaded necessary drivers etc and then did everything in order. Worked just fine. Mine didn't exactly look like the walkthrough though. It didn't say Android 1 on my Device Manager it said Android phone and to update the drivers I had to expand the Android Phone selection. Just a few minor things, otherwise it all went smooth.
Ok so this will be my 7th android phone I am getting tomorrow.
I am getting it for sprints coverage increase over t-mobile.
Also for 4G
I am hoping to run cyanogen rom since thats what I had on my nexus and on my
MytouchSlide
Ok here are my q's
I keep seeing different ways to root. what is the advantage of one way over another? is there a large risk of bricking with the one click method? losing root?
i have heard something about a /s root? wtf does this mean. I have never heard of anything like this and I rooted all my phones myself up until this point.... Ive even rooted most of my friends phones.
4G I keep hearing people saying they lose 4G. How is this possible is their a way to NOT lose 4g? has anyone successfully flashed a rom without losing 4G?
I mean I would rather not root my phone than lose 4g but at the same time I really want a rooted phone.
since Cyanogen mod is pretty much useless to me what is another good rom?
how can I get to it without bricking or losing 4g?
So if someone could give me the rundown i would greatly appreciate it.
I am excited for the Evo but am hesitant based on what I have read...
ok. whatever u do, DONT try rooting using Unrevoked, one-click, 1.47 method. none of dat crap.
This is ur answer for rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
no automatic shz(maybe just some parts)
it works for any windows computer. just make sure u have adb set up on ur comp and ur good to go.
read the instructions and disclaimers.
make sure u have ur hboot drivers updated(theyre in the post but just go along)
cyanogenmod of course does not have 4G at this moment cuz they build their rom from ground up.
a good rom to use for like 4G and wifi tether and shz would be "Fresh"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743079
of course theres alot more roms out there for evo...u can take a look at mostly all of them here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs
themes however are pretty hard to find. so i wont go there.
hboot is like the bootloader security program. if u notice, when u go to ur bootloader(holding power and volume down at the sametime) you'll see it says, Hboot 2.02 S-ON. my definition of that is,S=security-On. so obviously u wanna turn it off so u can get root, and that link i posted turns it off during the process. dats all there really is too it

Lol now you know as well as I do people don't actually read other threads. just the ones they post themselves lol.
So my questions are
I read there is a way to back up your 4g so if you ever **** yourself out of 4g you can restore.
Is this true?
I have heard alot of issues about a new camera... since mine will be purchased in 13 hours is their anything I have to worry about in regards to screwing the camera all up?
Also I had read not to use any other recovery other than the one that root tutorial includes.
is that true?
you had told me
"make sure u have ur hboot drivers updated(theyre in the post but just go along)"
is that hboot202-s_off-V71.zip?
How do i update them?
you had also said "ok. whatever u do, DONT try rooting using Unrevoked"
yet the tutprial you linked to says to
adb push root/unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/
adb push root/mtd-eng.img /sdcard/
adb push pc36img/PC36IMG-ENG.zip /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip
adb push pc36img/PC36IMG-MR.zip /sdcard/PC36IMG-MR.zip
adb push root/flash_image /data/local/
adb push root/rageagainstthecage /data/local/tmp
Is that an ok version of this unrevoked?
I miss my MTSlide lol. alas I am on a T-mobile employee plan (cause I am a T-mobile employee) and Am way past tired of being treated like someone who does NOT spend money on my line even though I pay 45 for 1 line. So I am switching To sprint tomorrow. I broke the screen on My mytouch Slide and they want me to pay a 130 dollar deductible on a phone with a 700 mhz processor ( only cause I OVER CLOCKED IT!)
sorry for so many questions. It just seems like I have found a lot of answers that contradict each other and I am not looking forward to a brick.

lol its all good. what people mean by dont use Unrevoked, its actually a .exe program dat will do it all for you, but since the current version they have is not update with the securities and stuff, it wont work and will infact crash your 4G.
backing up ur 4G, uhh im not so sure about that, my advise, root it first then make a nandroid backup lol.
the camera version isnt so big but it just has to do with watever rom u have and i like i mentioned before, Fresh should be a good one to use(in the rooting process u acually flash over a rom called"Stock_Rooted) but it wont f k it up. But, if u do endup messing up ur camera, its because of the rom doesnt work with ur phone so just flash one dat does work and you'll be good.
in the Like A Boss method, yes u do use unrevoked-forever, its just a zip. not a program so its usable, u get?
the "hboot202-s_off-V71.zip" file is actually ALL the files u will need in rooting.\
the actual hboot drivers are found here.(even come with instructions, and yes, its from unrevpked aswell but its not the bad file everyone is warning u to stay away. lol)

u got it. and yes. im sure about the camera issue too. flashing another recovery instead of the one it came with for rooting will fk it up. besides that, ur good.
and no i dont have 4G working. due to the fact im using CM6.1RC2 and he does not support 4G YET, but i love his work and feels grreat and everything on my phone is really easy to customize. im not so big on 4G anyway due to because i live in Sac Town, CA, and 4G isnt dat big here so its like on and off, so it just kills my battery qucker AND im always connected to my wifi. lol
one other important thing i should add to u before u do it by accident.
when ur rooting it, you'll come up to the point when ur done and have booted into the rom. it says to update ur PRL/PROFILE. on the phone, to get system updates u have to go to Settings>System Updates>and theres like 4 options. Update PRL, Update Profile, Update HTC Software, Update Firmware. ONLY! update PRL and PROFILE. dont update HTC SOFTWARE or else you'll lose partial root. lol. keep dat in mind cuz once u boot ur phone, a pop up might appear saying 3.30.somehitng and its 6mbs. update Yes, or Cancel. CANCEL DAT TART! lol
ONE MORE IMPORTANT THING! lol sorry its just dat it happened to me with 2 hones and i wanna keept u aware of these thigns.
on the Like a Boss method when rooting, wen u get to step 10...
>>>>>>10) You should still be in the boot loader at this point. Scroll down to recovery and press the power button. When you see the red triangle.<<<<<<
when u click on recovery, if it reboots and is stuck on the white HTC splash Screen for more than 15 seconds, just do a battery pull and get back to the bootloader and hit Recovery again. dont worry, everything u did wasnt a complete waste. and once u et to the red triangle with phone screen, resume with the guide.
youll see what im talking about when u get there.
Alright man imma do it... Im nervous lol. I got the 4g now
Successfully rooted and running frost rom ( Very close to Vanilla android or aosp i guess its called) Running well. I was wondering if you know how to get hulu running?
and can you explain to me what kernels I can flash?
With the new evos, only stock htc kernels work 100% atm, from my experience. I have tried a few others but they all stop the camera from working and some cause done graphic tearing. Until the new source comes out, I would stick with htc #10 or #17.

Thank I am digging mine too. Will be glad if i never screw up my 4g lol
I'm coming from the Eris...which has a lot of support and I'm confused as to what needs to be done to gain root n su access, I've been tryin to read everything, seems I need to gain S-off, install CWM, Root, then flash a ROM of choice...is this the order of steps and is that correct?
It seemed easier with the eris, a one step process, compared to that...?
Can anyone clear this up, I'm still sort of a newb with all of this.
Also, my phone info is as follows:
Dinc2 *obviously*
V2.3.4
HBOOT .98
S-On
Not sure if there's a way to root that version yet?
Thanks in advance, any and all help is greatly appreciated guys, thanks again!
Whenever 2.3.4 is able to be rooted, you would be able to find it on the Revolutionary website. Go to http://revolutionary.io/ and download that file. Run the executable and when it runs, it will give you the number that you have to input into the entry field on the website and it will give you a beta key which will do everything for you. It's been a few months since I've done it, so I can't be too sure on the steps, but this will do everything for you. Those would be the steps for it if 2.3.4 could be rooted, so keep checking up. Good luck in the future.
I just seen on twitter that alpharevx was looking for the inc2 98 hboot I believe that is probably a good sign that root won't be too far off for you poor souls on 2.3.4 also I got a thread stickied in general (shameless plug) that has a good bit of info for the new inc2 user
I did try that and it kept getting stuck on waiting for device, I thought I was maybe doing something wrong or having conflict with htc sync, but after reading more, it's more likely due to the v2.3.4 possibly?
So just to confirm, I AM indeed, unable to currently root, but when it IS available, all I have to do is run the rev file and I'll have root, s-off and be set to flash ROMs like my old Eris, huh?
you are indeed unable to software s off however you could use an xtc clip if you can get your hands on one. Bunch of people around here have one
As oxlong stated, unfortunately you are unable due to the newest firmware. I feel sorry for myself seeing as I had to unroot because I'm sending my phone off because VZW is sending me a new phone to hopefully fix the 0 reception issue in my house, so I may be right along with ya now kamikaze lol

Hi there, I have been looking everywhere on rooting my HTC desire A8181, mostly here with you guys, very helpful, took me 2 days to really get it done. This my first android, after losing my iphone, but can't say i'm disapointed as Apple are getting to tight now with the updates.
So... I have s-off, pvt2000, recovery is the 4ext, i'm running AOKP jellybean 4.2.2. I also tried the Cyanogenmod but found it was a bit slow so reverted back to AOKP, each time i have done a full wipe off everything.
SuperSu is installed i have ran the a2sd script via Terminal, went fine. and tapped build number 7 times.
My question is with the results in Root checker pro, i think i'm missing something, most of the results are good but its with the /sbin/su result being denied and system/bin/su aswell. i have made screenshoots to explain more.
This is my first ever post on something like this so, i hope i have given enough info, I have looked alot but can't find this particular problem anywhere else on the net. I am also thinking, theres nothing wrong, that i'm trying to much, i'm obsessive like this LOL.
Thanks in advance, hope you guys can explain whats going on here.

Download an app that requires root permission, install it and if SU pops up asking to grant superuser then all is fine. Never mind those useless root check apps. I once tried one, i was s-off, rooted, custom rom, custom hboot and the app said i wasnt rooted haha they a load of @#%# one will tell u ur rooted then the other will say ur not. all customs roms will (should) be rooted so dont worry
All's good!
