WP7 (.exe and .dll in Windows Folder??) - Windows Phone 7 General

Ok, if MS created a new OS with unsupported files like .dll, exe and .cab; then why can i find those extensions in Windows Folder of my HD7?
Any chance to edit them or something?

It's a new OS based on Windows CE so the binaries are still exe. Just like in iOS, where the binaries are still Unix binaries.
However all apps in WP7 are required to be xap.
The dlls in WP7 system and apps are editable.

I wouldn't suggest editing files. I am sure they are signed with a MS cert. Editing the files will loose said cert & make the system not want to load them. So was the case in WM 6/6.1/6.5/etc. You had to unsign dll/edit/resign dll with sdkcerts.

Thanks for suggesting that cause i was ready to edit some interesting stuff here!

If you have PE Explorer, open the exe/dll in it to see if it's signed.
The icon squared in red should be grayed out like show if there's NO signature. If there is one, it's be colored & selectable. If it's Grayed out it should be safe to edit.

Possible to Change WM6 system icon to Vista Style

Hey Everybody,
I tried to edit shellres.dll from dump, please refer to the attahced picture.
but after finshed the rom, the icons of the system stay no change, is there anyone had this kind of bad experience?
Any suggestion?
I wonder if after hard reset, system copy back a new shellres.dll default file to overwrite the edited one, but not so sure?

i can give you a small hint maybe will make your work easier, flash your rom without shellres.dll, then add it manually, if you want to replace just hard reset and try the second one, and so on, so no need for cooking or flashing (i'm not sure if that can be worth for shellres.dll, but i used this method for some other system dll files)
i don't know if you are good in making cab files, if you are not that good, did you try Wince Cab Manager and make a cab file containing shellres.dll with removing all properties for this file (in Wince Cab Manager).
i hope i gave you some of useful information
good luck for you work, don't stop till you got what you are looking for

Twitodo

hey guys
I'm kinda new to programming, done a bit at college and now and then i read up about it at home but i know the very basic skills. anyways i thought i would test myself and see i could come up with an idea for an app.
its not a windows mobile app but i suppose in a way its for developers (can save progress of development and tweet it to followers). the app is called twitodo and it basically saves a todo list to a txt file in the install directory. it can also open a text file from a custom directory. it can also tweet the todo list to your twitter account and you have the option to view twitter in a browser window.
the ui is ok i suppose but it could be alot nicer.. would apreciate it if someone could do a few graphics for me. also if anyone has a link to a good guide for making installers because im not sure that my program install correctly, i think you may have to run it from the program files directory.
anyways feedback will be apreciated very much, anything i can add or remove at all just leave below please i really wanna make this app better, but go easy its my first program unless you count "hello world" then its my second lol.
EDIT:
Changes:
permissions to write file at startup fixed (moved TodoList.txt default location)
fixed crash when user doesnt select a file in load todo list window
Attached Files Updates!
just thort id put a pic of the ui on so u can see what it looks like

[MOD] Disable the "touch look" logon screen

This little modification to the registry will make your
logon screen look like the one on Windows 7
All you need to do is execute the .reg file in logon.zip
To reverte back if you don't like the modification execute the .reg file in logonBack.zip

Can we get some screens please? also is it possible to change windows developer preview to say windows 8?
I just tried it and the old login screen doesn't show any users. I have nothing to click to get in. I tried getting into the registry from Windows 7 Partition but I can't open it, says its not a valid win32 application. Running out of ideas how to fix. I tried deleting precache folder and it ran the auto fixer but that didn't do anything. Any one have any ideas?
Edit- Managed to open up windows 7 registry and hive loaded the windows 8 registry. Manually edited the registry key and I am back in business. If any one ran into the same issue.
This is great! I honestly can't stand Windows 8. I will stick with 7 Ultimate for a while, but I will definitely be doing this when I upgrade

[tool]Win8 BTD 1.0.0.0 - Boot directly into classic desktop

Win8 BTD - (B)oot(T)o(D)esktop is a small tool which helps you to boot directly into classic desktop. ("Bypass" ModernUI Homescreen at startup)
Hello my name is Raffi and this is the first the first app I've posted at xda dev. So please be patient with me if I did something wrong. The program is written in C# and uses the .NET Framework 4.5. The application consists only of one .exe-file which does not add any files to the filesystem. So you can call it a portable app.
How to use it?
Start the Win8BTD.exe as administrator. Click on the desktop or on the modernui image to choose which "screen" you like to see after a boot.
Latest version
Win8 BTD 1.0.0.0
Old versions
n/a
Updates
The tool includes a minimal update check. So it tells you if it's time to look for a new version.
Tested on
Windows 8 Pro x64
If you own another version of Win8 and tested the tool with success on your system, let me know it.

Can you please post it in a .reg or .bat format?
I think most of us would like to know what a program is doing before we run it.
So this is how it works

In a nutshell
Change "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" key-value-pair in registry from explorer.exe to explorer.exe /select,explorer.exe
@victorator:
Is this ok for you or do you need still more information? Otherwise you could also decompile my tool, because I havn't used any kind of obfuscator.
It works very well and much easier...thanks..:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
Cool, thanks for providing the app and the info (and yeah, people usually like to check these things; my usual approach is to just include the source but you can do whatever you want).

[ICON][TOOL] Resource DLL Generator

In order to replace the mostly horrible icons on Windows's "Desktop Screen", means make them look
as icons in Modern UI style, i.e. flat tiles instead of icons, I have created tool "ResourceDLLGenerator"
which allows you to generate from an icon (tile) set you provide a so-called resource DLL.
If you will it's somehow the counterpart to OblyTile, which is applicable for the Windows 8 "Start Screen" only.

\ICO\iconset-2
...
\ICO\iconset-n
Run RC-RES-DLL-Generator.exe
If all went well, the resource DLLs created are located in subfolder DLL.
You may move these DLLs into C:\Windows\System32 folder
