honeycomb ported to us - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok so i see that the galaxy tab got a port of the honeycomb and i was wondering wat about us...do u think we might can get one too?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1023437

honeycomb is MADE for tablets, so don't expect it for our epics .

Is there even a honeycomb "port" of anything that's not a tablet?

not sure but i think we can get this up and running if the htc evo 4g can...

not only does the evo have the devs and support but porting on htc phones is so hella easier, samsung does all this random stuff to the framework and such or something that makes everything harder .

Ya, like having framework-res and twframework.

Not a developer (well I AM trying, but I am still very new. Like really really new). But why not? We have a good deal of people making ROM's for the epic. And by "weird things to the frame work", do you mean software wise? or hardware/software interfacing? Because if its just software, whoever eventually takes this on, would probably be better suited making the ROM from scratch. Correct?

Things like this are exactly why Google isn't releasing the honeycomb source code (yet). It's made for tablets, not phones. If you get an SDK port working it will run terribly.
Texted while driving

The port to the evo is nothing but a "look it boots".
It is not useful and very laggy, I know because I ran it for all of 5 minutes before nandroiding back.

Yeah I see now that I done a lil more searching around....but do y'all think it might be possible to make a honeycomb home replacement app?
Edit: ... Find a Honeycomb launcher app

[Q] How difficult to port Fascinate rom?

Just curious as to how difficult it would be or if its even possible/worth it to try at all? I know there are themes but I thought I'd ask anyways and I think it would be bad ass
First off, yes. But it's not that simple.
It's definitely possible, as the Sense UI has been ported a couple of times. The only issue is, you need a dev to do it. And to be honest, nobody shows much interest in the TouchWiz UI, Its just a bad android skin. Probably because of the HUGE list of bugs in the UI and the removal of Google Search in favor of Bing, and other random adjustments. Maybe one or two .apks will be ported, but i just don't see any reason to port TouchWiz other than to screw around. And even if, i would hope it would be a rom from The Epic, Captivate, or Vibrant. The fascinate's software simply blows.
And if it does happen, I will be suprised. It wont be easy, as The Fascinate has very different Hardware than the Incredible.
Try out Touch of Photons 2.2. Its over on alldroid's forum under dinc device stuff. It wont let me post the link here since I'm new. I used it for awhile and everything seems to work. Its not a fascinate port. Just a rom that gives a similar feel. The only thing i know that wont work is the Samsung widget option, but other than that its nice. All your camera stuff will still work since rosie is still in it.

not worth anyone's time to port a 2.1 ROM. When the Fascinate is updated to Froyo then that might change, but as others said the interest in the TouchWiz UI is pretty low

[Q] Anyone working on a Gingerbread ROM with Sense?

I was just curious if anyone had started development on a GB ROM with Sense baked in? I am trying out OMGB right now, and am LOVING the speed increases, but I am also missing Sense like it were my first born child.
Thanks in advance.
Judging by how efforts to make a Sense+2.2 build for the Droid Eris have been going (there's no official 2.2 for the Eris), I'd have to say that it's going to be a while if it happens. They're doing a good job, but the progress has been slow.
Unless the differences between 2.2 and 2.3 are much smaller than between 2.1 and 2.2, it'll be virtually impossible until an HTC device releases with 2.3 and Sense. Even then, it'll be a challenge.
Skyraider Ginerbread
Really looking forward when a skyraider gingerbread rom arrives one can only hope X..
Porting Sense itself is pretty much impossible. HTC has all the Sense apks deeply tied into the framework. It'd be rather ridiculous to try and extract everything.
I believe a team tried it, and I'm not sure what happened, but I don't see Sense apks floating around, so I assume they failed.
What they ARE doing now is porting the full ROM. Porting an entire Sense ROM to work on another device is a lot easier.
So, to answer your question, you will not be seeing Sense ported to GB. Instead, you will see a 2.3 Sense ROM in its entirety being ported.

That's what I was originally hoping for as well, but I did some searching through his thread, and someone had already asked him about that. He said that he didnt believe the benefits were worth his time at the moment, and that he would rather work on integrating the new Sense into his existing Froyo rom. Personally, I have found GB to be much faster, but that is just me. Also, the built in SIP stack has the potential to be nice, if I planned on staying with this ROM long enough to get me a VOIP account.
Short, simple and to the point.

I can deal with that. I appreciate your response. I did not realize that was how it currently worked. I thought Sense was able to be ported. Bummer. Hopefully someone can get their hands on the ROM from the new Incredible HD before too long. That would be SWEET!

That's assuming that the Incredible HD is going to launch with Gingerbread, which is no sure bet.
Sheesh Fiery, why you gotta go and make sense! I hate when people do that! It kills my mood. I sure hope you are wrong. I intend on getting the Inc HD, but by the time I am eligible (June I think), it should have the update anyway. I wish they would put out some info on that phone already, but I fully intend on playing with it at CES in 2 weeks

It kind of makes sense though (no pun intended) for it to launch with 2.3. The Nexus S launched with 2.3, and I'm sure that all higher-end devices in 2011 will be trying to launch with 2.3 as well to keep the competition level. That, and 2.3 on VZW's 4G network would (hopefully) help to level the playing field against *faster* networks like T-Mobile's *4G* network. XD
When is the incredible HD supposed to come out anyway? I plan on holding off on a 4g phone for awhile to enjoy my unlimited data but I'm curious.

The only official word we have received is that they would be showing some devices off at CES, and are planning on releasing up to 6 LTE handsets in Q1. They have said they would have a 4g Moto device in February, and there have been some leaked pics of the Mecha/Thunderbolt/DInc HD, HTC Merge, as well as a Samsung 4g device floating around. Some are speculating that with all the leaks, as well as a site put out there by HTC saying basically that they were first in 4G for Sprint, TMobile, and will be again, that they will show off the devices and at least one, likely the DInc HD will be available as soon as the next day. So I guess that is my long way of saying, hopefully Jan 7.
T-Mobile is not 4g no matter how much they want to think they are
Sent from my Htc Incredible using XDA App
If I recall correctly neither is Verizon LTE or Sprints WiMax. 4G is the second gen LTE and WiMax.
But I want a IncHD so bad. Not even for the not even close to 4g speeds. Seeing as we only just got 3g where I live 2 or 3 years back.
You are both correct, and incorrect. Originally whatever group gets to decide what is the fourth generation said that only the second generations of those technologies were truly 4G, however; now, according to one of the sites I check regularly (I cant remember if it was Gizmodo, TechCrunch,Engadget or all of the above), that group has loosened up a bit and said basically, It is not really 4G, but it kinda is, so we dont care what you call it.
Edit:
Here is that article.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/18/itu-capitulates-admits-that-the-term-4g-could-apply-to-lte-w/
What happens if you take the sense apks from a sense rom, put it in a 2.3 rom, sign and flash? force closes? boot loops? ill try it some day but i have stuff to do for now
Any further update on this question? I know that there are a lot of frankenstein roms out there with aspects of Gingerbread thrown in with the Z Sense 2.2 ports, ie. icons, keyboards, je non se quoi. But I'm certain that there must be some further action that has been taken on an actual GB w/ Sense 2.0 rom.
At the very least, someday soon there should be a stock rom update that can be ported (if the DInc doesn't miraculously get it near the same time that the new 4g devices receive it or debut with it)
There has been a lot of dev's trying to get gingerbread and sense to work but no luck yet....HTC hasn't released a cdma phone with gingerbread yet so its hard to do from scratch

[Q][Request] MotoBlur 2.2 for Evo port? Who wants to do it?

Just saw an unboxing for the Cliq 2 for t-mobile and, well, I'm a big fan of MotoBLUR. Big enough to ditch my Evo? Oh hell to the nizz-o, but I would love it if someone ported MotoBLUR 2.2 to the Evo. Possibly with some themes?
I miss my happenings widget, I'd love to have those back again. Anyone up for it? I know nothing about porting anything or doing anything with Roms whatsoever.
Im not sure if anyone else wants motoblur enough to port it. I had a cliq and I hated motoblur. Just my opinion, but I think aosp and even htc sense is much better. Maybe someone can port 'happenings' for you. I'm guessing that might be a little easier but I dont know if it would work or not

I could live with just the 2 widgets (the one that updates your status, and one of that shows you all the status updates) if not a whole rom port. Who do you think I should ask about it? Or does anyone wanna do it?

1) that is ics
2) ive kinda given up on booting ics sense on this phone as its closest cousin the inc s has a port but its way too broken to use as a daily (if more improvements are made ill get back at it)
3) we will eventually get ics sense, id imagine through a RUU leak way once it hits vzw testing servers
Do we even have a kernal to port against? I've played around with the DIS Rom, but I haven't gotten anything to boot on it.
Hope vzw leaks that ruu soon or someone builds a kernel to support porting...

i tried hacking up the cm9 ramdisk against changes that nik made to the inc s one to boot ics sense on that particular phone...but to no avail
frankly given the state of all ported ics sense roms on wvga phones, its not worth the time and effort really imo
the *only* ported one running on a .35 kernel that seems to be running well is the pyro series on the mt4g slide....but honestly its about as different a phone from ours as possible being htc (porting bullet was headache inducing)
unless one of our kernel guys really takes a run at making it work, i dont think ill personally put it any more effort just to get a semi functional rom going that can't be used on a regular basis
Sense 3.6 is really nothing special. They just made some slight improvements over 3.5 on ICS. Like fixing the browser text buttons at the top, simple things like that. Now Sense 4.0, that's where it's at. Played with it for a few minutes on my phone, and man is it nicer. Even just down to the skins, they theme way more of the system than ever before, even the keyboard finally. And the keyboard is a darker color now too, like the notification pulldown, plus the trace feature works 1000x better, and you can use it in any text field you want.

Then again, our MSM7x30 line is still considered main-line supported hardware, and it would be easier for them to just base it all of them on same Android version, since ICS is such a big difference from Gingerbread, and it ALL has to be re-written from the ground up.
Just gotta hope.
I'm really excited either way. Especially because the official updated drivers will make running ICS a possibility for me again.

I'd hope so too, but it seems as if the manufacturers aren't really interested in making wvga anymore, only qhd, and 720p now. Isn't the incredible s getting an official update first? I honestly don't think HTC is even going to have Sense 3.6 pushed to any device, it's just a little polish over 3.5, which is exactly the same as gingerbread Sense 3.5 and Sense 4.0 will be their main goal, because it's much more refined, and takes full advantage of what ics can do. In my opinion, It's the best version of sense to date.
I can post pictures of any particular part of 4.0 if you guys want me to

Working 4G on ICS and JB?

I keep seeing roms and posts stating that 4G WiMax is not going to happened on the Evo. I keep running back to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902051 scratching my head as I still don't understand why not?
TeamWin put the work in and wrote the code for 4G WiMax for us and proved it works on CM7 which im using now. I have also seen ICS and JB roms for the Evo 3D that have working 4G based on this code so what is this disconnect I'm having with why we OG Evolution owners can't have working 4G on ICS and up?
Sent from my BADASS Evo 4G using xda premium
Its entirely different. That is for gingerbread. Gingerbread and ice cream sandwich are vastly different and the evo 3d has different hardware specs so it won't happen unless drivers are provided. Cm7 has nothing to do with ICS or JB.

The thing isnt that it can't happen, its that it probably won't happen
The reason is that its very hard to build something like Wimax from source, especially for a device that, to be honest, not many own or are interested in deving for anymore and when HTC doesnt officially support those Android versions for this device and so theres nothing to work from

I get that no one is interested (real developers at least). however like I said TeamWin reverse engineerd the drivers and written their own source code which we can use as a starting point.
I know that this is not impossible and not in the level of difficulty that places it in the not possible realm. I also know that there ate many users that are in anticipation of such a feat, its all over these forums.
I will take a stab at this my self and if anyone would like to chip in and help you can get in touch here on XDA.

I really wasn't trying to be negative, but the fact that they got it working with several talented people on their team doesn't mean that it can work here, there are different things to take into consideration hardware wise, but if anyone could get it working that would be great
What I was trying to get it is that there isn't much development for this phone and in that area (getting hardware stuff to work)

wimax is dying a slow death by the time people would get it up and running for ICS sprints LTE service will be in full swing i say keep those devs working on exciting phones and if you want ics on the evo know that your only getting 3g coverage if you have 4g coverage keep with the older versions of andriod (wimax 4g SUCKS in cincy always dropping and reconnecting) i much rather have a 3g signal that stays connected and the latest ROM then a 4g connection that drops all the time and have an outdated ROM even when i had 4g on my phone i never used it woohoo 5 posts to go before i can post in the dev section lol
