The case today is an HTC Evo MicroUSB Cable.
This is the same cable that came with your HTC Evo and it may be the one that you still use.
STOP USING THIS CABLE ASAP - IT WAS POORLY ENGINEERED AND MIGHT BREAK YOUR PSU OR COMPUTER!!!!
I can say this because this is NOT the first time I have seen this same thing happen. You see, this is my Boyfriend's HTC Evo MicroUSB cable and not mine. Mine had the same issue, except I caught it right when it happened as it burned my hand when I was getting ready to plug in my phone at work 3 weeks ago!
This Cable was not engineered properly because of the MicroUSB Connector Chosen. Instead of using a proper MicroUSB Cable Mount style Connector as seen in the picture below, they went with a panel mount/board mount hybrid connector (cheapest as it uses board mount parts) as seen above.
What happens is that since the connector shield/metal outside part is not secured beyond two small points, any movement of this shield can cause a temporary dislodging and have the GROUNDED shield touch the 5V power line on the USB cable. Most Modern laptops and desktop computers put out between 500-1000ma of current at 4.5-5.5V which means that you could be having as much as 5.5Watts burning through those cable lines and melting the crap out of some rubber as in this case. This would not have happened is HTC had decided to go with the larger isolated and secured connector or if they simply had chosen to use a Hard ABS plastic instead of flexible rubber to secure a metal part (ga-'duh?!).
What this can Harm:
- Burn out the Power Diode for your USB on your Laptop/Desktop making that port useless (did not burn out my BF's Thinkpad as it is fuse controlled)
- Burn your fingers/hands as it did to me causing a blister.
- Burn out your USB Receiving Chip on your laptop/desktop
- Burn stuff ( a lot of us have a bunch of papers right next to your computer).
Why this matters:
No way in H3LL is HTC going to pay to fix your laptop or build you a house or pay medical bills. They will likely redirect you to the company that designed and manufactured the cable which is likely very hard to sue in the US.
Spend some money on a nice BlackBerry or Motorola or basically any proper cable. $5 for peace of mind is worth it.
I am not a MatSci or Mechincal Engineer (only a Computer Engineer), but dear Lord tell me that at least an Industrial or Manufacturing Engineer looked over this before they sent it out the Door! *Likely Not based on Information Shown*
ive had mine for a year and so has my girl we haven't had any issues the only people with issues are using the battery charge hack
This issue seems to just be happening now. 9-10months into ownership. I am not saying it will happen to everyone, I am just alerting you to the definite possibility. I mean just look at the rest of that cable, it looks like the day you got it!
interesting, never heard of the issue glad I saw this.

I'm right around that 9-10 month mark of having my Evo. No problems so far and I haven't even seen anything close the the cable malfunctioning, but I'll keep an eye on it if anything goes wrong.
Wonder if this is a reason so many Evo's usb/charging port goes bad?
Sent from "The EVO" using XDA Premium
I don't think that this would have anything to do with Evo microusb ports going bad at all, that might just be a contact wear/ air moisture / board flexing problem. I know that my Evo sometimes can be a bit sensitive to getting it right, but my BF's Evo port is like new and locks like a beaut.
The reason why this is happening is the shield gets in contact with the power pin which cannot happen while your phone is connected.
The other construction on the cable is well done, but the steel shield on the MicroUSB end just isn't well designed for that rubber casing (which is was probably not designed for in the first place). It really does not take much flex on the micro-usb connection to make this happen. I have offered to buy all of the HTC cables like this from people I know at work to get a good test set of these. it was pretty easy to make it happen to a Co-workers cable by flexing the micro-usb area (rubber) till it let a little spark and started to heat up. However, he could plug it in again and have no problems. Its just that the rubber flexes too much and simply leaving it plugged in at your desk it could flex from gravity.
Talked to a Sprint store rep yesterday and a lot of people bring back that cable for being faulty, but he did not know the reason. Apparently people just say "it's broke" and then the rep gives them a new one.
This is the reason why I tell people to not use their phone, or at least not talk on it, while its charging. You have this cheap little htc rectifier plug thats dropping 120v down to 5v or so, very scary. I only use the stock cable for charging my phone by my nightstand, so it doesnt see any wear or tear, it just lays there.
mine has never gotten hot, but it quit staying hooked to the phone. I have to move it around to get a connection and set it down carefully. Thanks for the info I am going to get new one tomorrow!
Hi, I have the Htc desire that uses the same stock micro usb cable as the evo, I have wanted to change the cable for ages because for some reason it comes out if the phone or any device without any effort, but I am wary of putting a cheap £1-2 cable in the wall socket charger thing in case it blows or something, so to just have piece of mind, is it defiantly ok to use any micro usb cable in the charger please? Thanks
I've seen a lot of customers recently with this problem but none before about a month ago. Maybe they just recently switched how it's manufactured, but literally no customers complained about it breaking before.
Hi,
cant believe what iam reading here. I had the same issue 2 weeks ago and I thought that iam the only one, but not with an EVO or Sprint rather with my !HD2!.
Apparently this is a HTC manufacturing problem :/
This makes me worry, but I have to admit, I'm also lazy.
That being said, do you have any links for a proper source for "a nice BlackBerry or Motorola or basically any proper cable. $5?"
I don't like going into the stores, as they try to sell me much more BS than I have patience for. A link to a known, proper substitute would be greatly appreciated.
(I understand if you detest my lazy butt, but if you have links, you'd be considered a Ninja, and would get a "Thanks" point from me. L'chiam.)
does this apply to other htc devices (the cable for my wildfire is identical)

should be - i often charge my wildfire off my (powered) usb hub using the cable for my WD passsport
I have trouble with my charger for my Evo. The very tip underneath the port that connects to the phone, the wires are loose. I have to play with the wire and then set the phone down slowly just to get a charge. I actually can see the wires. I believe there is a malfunction in these cables.
Anyone else experience this?

Its for a Droid X, but its the same port as an Evo, or in my friend's case, a Samsung Moment.
I threw mine away b/c it was useless...wont even stay plugged in.

Can anyone recommend a car charger that is cheap and charges the unit like its on AC power? Some of the cheaper ones I've purchased in the past charged my phone like it was on usb power.
TIA!
Just open up one of your cheap chargers and short the middle two pins of the USB jack. A drop of solder worked on mine. There are only four pins, so it should be easy to follow and find a place on the circuit board to do it.
Once you get it done, plug in the phone and it will show that it's charging on AC, which means it's pulling 1 amp.
Plenty different ones available, but I use this one. There are cheaper ones, but this one is a quality build that charges at 1 full amp! Motorola brand for around $6 including shipping.

Dude, go to wallymart or somewhere and get an AC converter. I bought one with 2 AC outlets and 1 USB for fairly cheap at wallymart. You wont regret it. It charges my laptop, phone, and gf's phone just fine.
Monoprice has a 1a usb charger for $1.33. I was looking at it yesterday but don't have the link handy at the moment. They're also the best place to buy usb cables too.

The best car chargers I've found are the Palm chargers for the Pre. For some reason they seem to work much better than any other car charger that I have used. You just need to make sure you get model number 3453WW, because there is also an older model that looks the same but doesn't provide the full 1A charge.

Damn. I was wondering WHY in the world this phone took SO STINKING LONG to charge. I mean OVER NIGHT and still not quite done sometimes (extended battery)
Gonna stalk me some good chargers
so instead of starting my own thread.. thought id bump this up...
any new chargers out there.. for car... can be either the usb one (as i have the cig lighter to usb plug... )..or cig lighter..
just feeling out there if anything has changed..
we went on a LONG drive.. 376miles.. and using gps and my phone in my infuse dock.. it was charging.. but draining more than charging... by 1/2 way it was below 50%.... so the road i needed to take was super long so just turned phone off for a while...
was using the charger from my wifes incognito so i figured maybe that car charger didnt have enough A to it.. so bought a new charger from walmart.. and it didnt do any better...
thanks guys...
p.s. on my way home from work (1hr drive) im going to plug straight into my phone instead of the infuse dock and run the gps and see if it charges any different...
Even if the car charger says it can put out 2A the phone will only draw 500mah unless the two inner pins are shorted. Samsung does their chargers this way to identify to the phone that its plugged into a wall charger instead of a computer. (computers are only rated for 500mah on the USB port, although some can go higher)
You could open up the charger and short the pins, or if the charger is the kind where you plug your own cord in you can modify the cord itself. I have a "charging only cord" for when the phone needs a fast boost.

Hey, as the only verified genius here I wanted to share a great and cheap way to charge your phone. As i understand it you want the speed and current of AC out of your car's 12 volt dc system. They currently make something that works with ALL phone models. It is called an inverter. You just plug your stock phone charger into it. It will work fine for your phone but it wouldnt be wise to try use this it watch a 42" plasma tv. Here is one for 6 bucks that plugs in your lighter socket.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003C2YE8M/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
By the way, I can't endorse this product. I hope you get the general idea. As always you get what you pay for. Read the reviews and look for the inverter that you think would work best for you.

I would recommend getting the AC/usb adapter for an iphone or ipad, because they tend to run on a higher voltage (5v) than many cheap AC/usb adapters you can probably find off-brand one pretty cheap all over. If anything just make sure your adapter runs on about 5v. I just recommened iphone ones because there are more accessory manufacturers for i-products and you can generally find a wider selection of what you are looking for regarding this topic. I would check walmart first if money is an issue.

The 1 amp charger i got from the dollar store already had this in place. I cant say I would have recommended anyone to get one from the dollar store. Ive checked out the components on this one its not too bad.

Note that most cheap inverters use a modified sine wave to gain efficiencies over 80%. Most phone chargers will work okay you might get a little buzzing. But you will often run into chargers, power supplies etc that will only operate properly on a pure sine wave inverter.
Ever since I got the S2 I've been a bit concerned about that stupid microUSB port. Unlike the Apple 30 pin on my old iPhone or the Samsung 30 pin on my Galaxy Tab, the microUSB connection seems about as sturdy as a matchstick holding up a house. Standard USB my ass, I'd take something sturdy any day.
Anyways, I figured that with all the microUSB devices supposedly out there, someone would have had to have fixed this by now. Then I searched around and found nothing. Basically what I'm imagining is a simple USB plug that plugs into the connector and expands the USB plug to 4 magnetic connection points similar to the magsafe thing on apple's macbooks or the magnetic cable on the blackberry playbook. You'd then have an adapter on the cable that would snap to the magnetic connector on the phone and allow you to connect the two without stressing your microUSB and also make it faster to get connected.
Is there really nothing like this out there?

Magnetic sensor? You mean the digital compass? Not any more than the Smart Cover would do that for an iPad 2, or any case with a battery lock would do it. Very small magnets we're talking about here, their magnetic effect is next to nothing unless directly paired with another magnet.
Here's the kind of magnet I'd imagine being used:
Aside from the Apple and RIM versions of this, the closest I can think of is the Replug: http://www.replug.com/home.php
Not magnetic, and only for audio. Ofc doesn't have to be magnetic if the concept still works, but pretty much have to be microUSB
If you look at the HTC Rhyme, it comes with a charging dock that uses the more common spring loaded pin connection system: http://img.gfx.no/993/993523/topp1.788x525!.JPG
There are pins on the back of the phone that matches up with the three you can see on the cradle. I would be happy with simply something like that, I just don't like how thin and fragile the microUSB connector is compared to 30 pin connectors
You'd just be replacing one cable with another, kinda pointless if you ask me. MicroUSB seems sturdy enough to me

It's pretty much a safety feature. No more risk of the USB port bending or anything.
For example, my charger won't reach from the wall socket to my bedside table, so I leave it on the floor. Sometimes when walking around in the morning my foot pulls the cable and yanks my SGS2 across the room. With a magnetic connector like this it would simply disconnect and the phone would stay in pretty much the same place instead of getting dragged around with the cable.

Exactly, furthermore, the microUSB port would be protected from dust and debris, and not have a connector plugged in and out of the thing all the time. Since I got my SII a few weeks ago and started reading up on it I've seen multiple people have microUSB port issues, so it's obviously not that sturdy.
A third benefit would be a universal connector. MicroUSB is technically a universal connector, but take my situation - an iPad 2, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and an SII. Three different connectors for charging and USB. And two of the devices are the same brand! Say what you want about Apple, but when I had an iPhone and an iPad, at least I only needed one charger, one cable. Here I am with two 2011 generation Samsung devices and they're not even compatible. What's even more ironic, Apple has a 30 pin to microUSB adapter now. Where is the Samsung version of that to make the Galaxy Tab microUSB? A magnetic system like this would allow me to plug a magnetic plug into each of my three devices and use the same magnetic cable with them. This could be expanded with receiver adapters - imagine a Apple 30 pin female connector and a magnetic receiver connector all in one small package that would turn any iPhone dock into a whatever-dock.
Honnestly, production of this could lead to something great. But dont forget that microUSB has 5 pins, so you need 5 small magnet this device could be also made for anyother usb port variant. You would then have an universal usb magnetic port.

It does, but only uses 4 of them. The last one triggers USB host mode when connected to ground. Normal sized USB is only 4 pins so where you make that move from 5 to 4 doesn't matter

Can I revive this post?
I've been looking for something like this for awhile now and I keep coming back to this post. I'm currently in the process of building a magnetic quick attach micro USB plug, but only for charging. I have bare female and male plugs and some 2mm x 1mm neodymium magnets, and now I just need to create the housing. Probably going to use fimo clay for the prototype.
My biggest problem is creating the connection point between the plug and the receiver. Can't have anything exposed connections on either end, because of electrical shorts and mismatched polarities. Don't need any more fried devices laying around.
The main motivation for this, is charging a phone at night in the dark; it'd make life a little easier. It would also be handy for charging while in the cradle on the dash of a car.
Any ideas or creative input? I'll post photos when I have something to show.

I'm always encouraging hardware hacking, and giving a hand if possible, but this is dangerous, and I'll tell you why.
http://www.instructables.com/id/MagSafe-for-the-Rest-of-Us-A-DIY-Magnetic-Power-A/
This is a project that landed on Instuctables a while ago, but the main flaws were these:
)Resistance added by the magnet/copper coupling to attach the two ends, thus heat/other undesirable side effects;
)Sparks, caused by the two sides turning freely.
So, in order to achieve some kind of usability, you would have to ensure that the phone does not provide power to the socket (otherwise you would expose yourself to shorts), and that you could make a rectangular/non-circular plug small enough for it to sit in the micro usb all the time; plus, it should not have a high resistance, so that it would not generate too much heat, slowing down the charge at best, cooking the phone at worst.
All this looks quite complicated to me :/

I think this KickStarter is what everyone is looking for. A mag safe type of connector for Micro USB and for Lightning connection. The price is amazing and this is not a concept this is a 'we already have everything just the bigger the first order the better'.
There is also this on Amazon but it only comes with a USB end to plug into a wall wart or computer so if you have a cable inside your car etc you cant convert it you would have to replace it if you can
Again cant post links so search google for "PLESON Premium Magnetic cable Micro USB Cables" it will be on amazon.
I hope this helps everyone and if someone else can post links please do so to these products so others can benefit form them!

I've owned multiple cables just like this. They all break. The one that came with my Samsung Galaxy S II, the one that came with my mother's HTC Evo 4G, the one that came with my sisters Samsung dumbphone, and every one I've bought at Wal-Mart or Dollar general. Every. Freaking. One. Breaks within two months.
It's not the device; it's the cord. I checked. I tested.
Does anybody else have this issue? Does anybody know where I can buy a HIGH-QUALITY WILL-NOT-BREAK Micro USB cable?
It's downright stupid to me how big companies like Samsung or HTC packs charging cables that break so easily. My mom has gotten multiple replacements from Sprint from hers breaking.
Also, 70% of the time, they don't completely break. They just work in a certain direction, and touching your device or the cable will disconnect it. Sometimes they will disconnect and reconnect hundreds of times a minute, completely crashing your device or making loud, annoying sounds letting you know your device is charging or not.
Please, I need some help. I googled this. Nothing very useful. This is getting on my nerves.
Thanks for the help!
I don't think I've had one USB (whether it be regular or micro) ever break on me. You must be doing something wrong with them lol
But seriously, not one.

How do I use it? Plug it in phone, plug it in wall/computer, let it sit and charge.
This happened to me, my mom, and my sister - all using different, unique cables and different phones.
had several of them and never had broken one!!!

Twisting the cables or winding them very tight can cause the wires to break. I coil mine very loosely and I'm well over two months into the use of this cable.

Connecting to a computer via USB
You can connect your phone to a computer with a USB cable, to transfer music, pictures, and other files between your phone and the computer. Your phone stores these files in internal USB storage or on a removable SD card, depending on your model of phone (see your phone’s owner’s guide for details about its features).
WARNING! When connecting your phone to a computer and mounting its USB storage or SD card, you must follow your computer’s instructions for connecting and disconnecting USB devices, to avoid damaging or corrupting files.
If you are using USB tethering, you must turn that off before you can use USB to transfer files between your phone and computer. See Sharing your phone’s mobile data connection.
Connect your phone to a computer via USB
1. Use the USB cable that came with your phone to connect the phone to a USB port on your computer.
You receive a notification that the USB is connected.
2. Open the Notifications panel and touch USB connected.
For details on working with the Notifications panel, see Managing notifications.
3. Touch Turn on USB storage in the screen that opens to confirm that you want to transfer files.
When the phone is connected as USB storage, the screen indicates that USB storage is in use and you receive a notification.
Your phone’s USB storage or SD card is mounted as a drive on your computer. You can now copy files back and forth. For more information, see the documentation for your computer.
During this time, you can’t access the USB storage or SD card from your phone, so you can’t use applications that rely on them, such as Camera, Gallery, and Music. You also can’t share your phone’s data connection with your computer via USB.
Disconnect your phone from the computer
WARNING! Carefully follow your computer’s instructions to unmount the USB storage or SD card and disconnect USB devices correctly, to avoid losing information.
1. Unmount the USB storage or SD card on your computer.
2. Open the Notifications panel and touch Turn off USB storage.
3. Touch Turn off USB storage in the screen that opens.
Safely remove an SD card from your phone
If your phone has an SD card (rather than internal USB storage), you can safely remove the SD card from your phone any time the phone is turned off, as described in your phone’s owner’s guide. If you need to remove the SD card while the phone is on, you must unmount the SD card form the phone first, to prevent corrupting or damaging the SD card.
1. Press Home , press Menu , and touch Settings, to open the Settings application.
2. Touch Storage.
3. Touch Unmount.
You can now safely remove the SD card from the phone.
Erase your phone’s USB storage or SD card
If your phone uses an SD card, you may need to erase a new one before you can use it with your phone. You can also erase your phone’s USB storage or SD card, for example, if you are giving the phone or SD card to someone else and want to erase your personal information from it. (See Factory data reset for information on erasing all the data on your phone.)
1. Press Home , press Menu , and touch Settings, to open the Settings application.
2. Touch Storage.
3. Touch Erase. On the screen that warns you that formatting will erase its contents, touch Erase.

Note: By Micro USB Cable, I mean the cable that connects to your phone/tablet and to the wall/computer in order to charge and/or sync. In a thousand words, this:

You mean break as in the micro usb side metal thingy (the tiny side) actually breaks off or something internal that it stops connecting to the pc / start charging?
My Xperia X10 came with a pretty sturdy cable comparatively, now that I read what you faced. Its nearly two years old... No problems at all.. Maybe you can give it a try

I just buy cables from Monoprice. They seem to be just as good as name-brand cables, but they're really cheap... like a fifth the cost of generic cables from a big box store,, and a small fraction of the ripoff premium cables.
When I order, I just stock up because shipping is about the same if you're buying one cable or dozens.
I would say that it breaks because of the way you handle it. I've never had a cable breaking on me.
When you plug in and out, make sure you hold it not by the cable, but at the plug. This protects the joint between the cable and the plug. Also, do not wiggle the plug. Just in and out, perpendicular to the connector. This way, you won't loosen the connectors and damage them.
buy Sony Ericsson EC600L or EC600R
It build like a tank, softtouch coated cable, rubberized connector base.
The down side:this big cable is not flexible, can not fold it, can not fit it into small pocket at all.
Where can one obtain cables which are just as good as originals, for only a few bucks? I'm looking at ebay atm. I've bought a few which have been OK, but not as good as the original ones. I've ordered a few different ones anyway, will see which give the best results.

This. I'll order 10 - 20 at a time and carry them around with me. If someone else needs one, I'll sell it to them for a buck or two. If not, I just always have one just in case.

I've never broken a micro usb cable in my life. I have the official samsung usb cable, a ebay $1.77 micro usb, and the blackberry microusb cable and never broke. My blackberry one I've had it for 2 years now and its been through hell and still running strong hell I've even bent the port and it still works perfectly fine. I don't know what your doing but I recommend just buying a ****load of ebay microusb cables if you keep breaking them .
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/160829665184...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_3885wt_1344 just message them and tell them you want to buy like 10+ and they'll probably sell you them at $1.25 each or so. THats the best cable under $5 i've ever boughten
I am actually in the process of developing a high quality USB cable for both iphones and android phones. If you are interested you can email me at [email protected]
Never had a broken usb cable.
However, it's not cheap but maybe the bobine would suit you better
http://www.fusechicken.com/
I figure it's sturdy. So whatever it is you are doing to the cables maybe this one can withstand it
As a side effect it acts as a stand too
Never coil too tightly, twist, pull or fold any cables as it might tear the wires inside. Try treating your cables better? :X
I've always wondered about the varied reports of high failure rates in various cables/dongles/usb cords.
At the time I bought my Nook Color, those cables were being panned for being incredibly flimsy. I got an original "green dot" partition one too, yet my cable is still lasting just fine with no problems. Others have said the same. Like all my cables, when not in use it's loosely coiled and secured in the coil with a velcro strap. When in use I never pull or push by the wires.
Now headphones, I go through those like water. Because of my lifestyle, they're often getting yanked on one end or the other, no matter how hard I try to avoid that. The thin wires eventually detach from the contact point of the jack or the speaker.
I wonder if it's really, as some have suggested, how the cables are being treated?
Buy cables which has atleast minimum warranty and don't always look for cheaper price products on online shopping. as like everyone, use cable in proper way, plug and unplug gently don't shake while plug-in.
I had a micro usb cable for multi purpose, works as data transfer cable to PC and also as charger cable. very soon, micro usb point gone. now i bought original item from showroom.

For the cost of one "original item from showroom," you could buy about twenty microUSB cables from Monoprice, which are guaranteed for life. However, I doubt that I would waste the postage to return one of their inexpensive cables.
My phone stopped charging, even though it would say it was charging and the battery icon indicated it was charging. I tried using a different charger and even bought a new battery. Those did not work. I then did some research and found out about the USB port problems with this phone and ordered a replacement cable. I installed the new cable and am still experiencing the same problem. Unfortunately, I am just outside the warranty period and I'm lost on what the issue could be. Anyone with a better understanding of these things have any ideas? Thanks.

I already replaced the usb port. The new usb port wasn't charging either. I guess it's possible that the new usb port was defective, but that is unlikely. What else could it be, the motherboard?

Hi,
I had the same problem of ghost charging, it started with phone not charging when connected to charger and then randomly showing charging...
Now discovered it causes vbus_tuna_otg wake lock, resulting in high system usage in settings> battery and not letting phone go to deep sleep, causing battery drain.

I hope you're able to figure something out. My GNex is still out of commission. I moved to a Note 2 for my phone, but the GNex would make a great upgrade for my wife iPhone 4.
i went through this issue for 3 weeks before i realized that the usb cable that came with my phone was the culprit. i didn't think that it was the cable itself; since i had no issues with that cable connecting to my laptop. and well it also showed a charging state when it was hooked up to my car, AC outlet and the computer itself. i did have a spare usb micro charging cable in the car, but never used it. so i switched to this unused usb cable, and the charging resumed normally. in fact it chaged correctly within an hour.
to prove that it was the cable, i tested the 'bad' cable again over the next couple of days. it would charge slowly..at almost a trickle. on the third day, i went back to the new cable, and the phone charged quickly and normally.
i had already ordered a new battery, and a new usb charge port..but it looks as if those will not be used now-

I've tested different cables, adapter, and batteries. I have taken apart the entire phone and cleaned connections and cables. Nothing makes a difference.
The only thing I have noticed, and maybe someone can help here, is that under the main board on the top left side of the device there is a bank of gold components. One of mine is black in the middle. It looks like it could be a burn mark but could just be black marker. Has anyone noticed this on a device with this problem or a device that works? I haven't been able to find an image online.
I've seen several posts with users having this same exact issue. I'm pretty much convinced that it is unfortunately prob a hardware issue...Jus my opinion tho.

I spent the day online and on the phone with Samsung. They recognize that it is a problem with the main board since I have already replaced the USB port, but say my only option is to send it in for repair and pay out of pocket.
Its definitely not worth it to send it in so I'm still looking for other options.
This is a review of MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) micro-usb to HDMI adapter with a remote: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/MHL...TV-Adpater-Cable-with-Remote-Control-PCA-380/ and High Speed HDMI v1.4 male-to-male cable: http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/V1....XBOX360-Bluray-Disc-HDTV-DVD-Black-PCA-4196D/
If you guys think this is going to be just another HDMI adapter you have seen so many times in the forum - it's not! Typical adapters have a small converter unit with a male HDMI connector, micro-usb power input, and a cable with micro-usb connector going to your phone. Sure it works, but if you to connect it to your TV you have to fumble around to plug it in in the back panel connecting all the wires in blind or get female-to-male extension cord, and also once you connect the phone - you have to control it by going over to tap that pause button. Well, this MHL adapter got a few bonuses to make it unique.
The main unit is your typical converter which has micro-usb power input, extension cord with micro-usb connector going to the phone, and HDMI connector which is actually female instead of typical male. I think its actually to the advantage because male-to-male HDMI cables are more common than male-to-female extension chords. If you already have one, then you have nothing to worry about, but if you don't I included in my review such high speed cable (v1.4) which is of a fantastic quality, high durability, gold-plated connectors, and for $3 from tvc-mall - its a great value. The micro-usb connector going to the phone is actually 5-pin connector to make this adapter more universal with other phones. But have no worry if you have S3/N2/S4 with 11-pin micro-usb connector. In the package also included a very short 5-pin to 11-pin adapter which seamlessly integrates with a connector, just leave it on since we need to use it with Note 2. You will need to connect power source to keep it happy which also chargers your phone, although as you can see from the pictures recognized as USB source rather than AC (typical for these adapters). Of course, the big bonus in here is a remote control!!! You get all your typical Android control buttons, a separate play/pause/stop, and directional navigation buttons with ok/enter. When you sitting on the couch away from your TV where the phone is connected, to be able to control video stream or navigation is priceless!
Overall, both the adapter and cables (if you don't have one already) are the great value and with a bonus of remote control - make a killer combination for connecting your phone to TV and being able to control it from a distance. I personally was very happy with this order from tvc-mall.
Here are the pictures.

TV should see 720p from the phone. In my particular setup I have an old big screen Sony tube TV without hdmi, so I'm using hdmi to AV converter and because of old 4:3 resolution everything gets a bit messed up but I'm not complaining

Honestly, it's no different than ordering from ebay. With tvc-mall you do have to pay for shipping, but it's not that much and often the more you buy the cheaper shipping per item. But you will also notice their prices are a lot more cheaper than others so shipping cost is offset. Plus, the more stuff you buy the cheaper it is. I have ordered from them for awhile now (all my "almost real" cases were from there - although they don't officially carry it anymore, but unofficially it never hurts to ask them in email ). Even got a roll up drum kit toy for my kids the last time, and placing another order now for a few bluetooth small speakers, some 3.5mm cables, some toys, etc.. Plus, I just ordered a few more of those short usb cables with built in micro-sd card reader (the one I reviewed in my "smiley" cable review); I want to check it out if another cable will work with micro-sd since it didn't work with my original one.
If/when you place an order with them, chime in and share your experience.
Have you noticed any flickering? I've tried 2 different TV's, and only got it to work consistently once. Other times it shows the screen, then after a few seconds, flashes like it lost connect and comes back on.

Are we talking about exactly the same MHL adapter with Note 2 (stock, not rooted)? I can only speak for that setup and it works perfect. I only saw flickering using this setup with Galaxy S4 which has MHL v2 standard. With the setup above it was solid.
What I would suggest first to make sure all the cables are connected properly. What you describing is sounds almost like an intermittent behavior of a loose cable connection. HDMI cables usually have a sturdier connection, but check that anyway. Usually micro-usb is where you get it loose. Another thing to check is the power connection. If you are using 500mA wall charger that will not be enough to power it up, you will be current starving the converter. I was using my 2A oem wall charger.
Good luck!
Exact same adapter (I bought it after seeing your review), but I am running a different Rom (CleanRom 5.0). All connections are fine on the TV side, and I've replugged in the micro-usb (with adapter) into the N2 a few times, with same results. The wall charger should be good as well. Using the GCC app, I get a 1800 avg current.
Will test it more in depth tonight.

I've only had time to try it once more, and it worked continuously for hours. Haven't changed anything on my phone, used the same cables. Will report back after I test it a few more times.
I got mine in the mail and it charges the phone but thats about it.
Bought it 2 days before but i didnt got it to work... :-/
I m in stock rom but rooted...
any ideas..?
are you guys using 5-to-11 adapter? Also, try to play around with powering it up first and then connecting hdmi cable versus connecting cable first and then powering it up. I actually used mine yesterday and it was working for awhile until my tv started to flicker which suggested connection was getting loose somewhere. Plus, I was playing on non-HD tv with hdmi to component converter and was using 1A external battery to power up this guy. So the power is used for both MHL converter and my HDMI converter, and I'm thinking maybe I should have used 2A charger for it... So just another suggestion maybe to make sure you use higher current charger to power it up?
No Luck for Me on N2 w/CleanRom 5.0
Well, I've had no luck at all. Purchased and received, hooked up as directed with OEM charger to rooted N2 running CleanRom 5.0. Not even a flicker on the Visio set I hooked it to. Phone acknowledges it is being charged, though the microUSB connectors (particularly on the adapter piece) seem a bit sketchy. But no matter what sequence I use to hook up, the TV never indicates even a flicker. Any other suggestions? Any setting on phone that triggers HDMI out? I use USB drives and devices without a hitch otherwise. The MHL Unit lights up and indicates it receives signals from the remote. I just never get a flicker on the TV.
Me neither...tried the 2amp charger also but no luck at all... I ve contacted the supplier and asked for a new one..(have to wait for a couple of weeks.. :-/ ) will try again then...
Is there any possibility that the problem is because we are ''rooted''..?
Better News!
:good: For those having trouble, I'm posting again to report I finally got mine working (except for the remote)! So it's not a problem with being rooted OR with running a custom ROM (at least CleanRom). I don't know about Cyanogen, or others that are not based on/derived from the orginal stock ROM, but I'm delighted to report that it works as gloriously as vectron indicated. As I indicated in my post above, the way the micro-USB connectors went together seemed sketchy to me, but I discovered that's where the problem lies -- and I'm guessing the same is true for others who have experienced failure like me.
I did more research and watched demo vids, etc. and paid close attention to how the parts went together. The key for me was to go ahead and force (gently but firmly) the 5 to 11 adapter ALL THE WAY into the phone jack. Mine didn't go in easily, and I was spooked to push too hard, but in the end that's what I had to do. When I pushed past the resistance and finally seated it firmly and fully flush with the bottom of the phone, VOILA!, the recognition message came up and immediately the HDMI was output to the TV. Both sound and audio worked really fine. It's pretty amazing when you see it work.
One note about the connectors. There is still a space between the 5-11 adapter and the MHL device plug. On mine at least, this connects WITHOUT being fully flush. BUT, as noted above, the adapter needs to be fully flush with the bottom of the phone. Hope this works for the rest of you. It is sweet if you get it working. vecron was correct, the key in in the connectors. They are finicky, but if you get them right, it works like a charm.
Especially when you are dealing with 11 months old Note 2 where you put a lot of wear''n'tear mileage on that micro-usb phone connector That's my problem
Regarding remote, not too insult your intelligence, I think there was a piece of plastic stuck in battery compartment so make sure its out for remote to work. Another point, that remote is not RF but rather IR (infrared) which requires direct visual contact with receiver element so you gotta make sure to point remote to that space on the converter. Hopefully that will fix your problem.
