[Q] Some questions for a first time newbie. (FAQS read) - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: Please move to Q&A subforum. I think I hasted a bit when posting in General. Sorry
-----------------------------------
Hi,
I have in hand a brand new HTC DHD, T-Mobile, UK. This is my first smart phone, so I am fairly new to the Android scene, although I am fairly good with computers. I am sending this phone back to my Dad in Vietnam. He is not very good with all the tech things, but I want to set the phone up the best way I can, so he can have a smooth ride using it.
Having read around the forums for 2 days, I think I have some ideas of what is what, but understandably, I am very nervous when making changes to the phone.
Here is what I want to do:
1. Get rid of SIMLOCK, so at least my dad can use a Viet Nam sim card, or any SIM for that matter
2. Make the phone more efficient, and faster to use. To achieve this, I guess I would need to install a custom ROM and Radio? (Please tell me if only the ROM is needed)
My phone's details are:
Android version: 2.2
Baseband: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Build number: 1.39.110.1 CL278886
Having read some of the FAQs, I think to achieve the 2 objectives above, I would need to first Root, and S-OFF, and ENG S-OFF before I can make any changes. So here comes the questions:
a. Do I need to downgrade? If yes, that would be the baseband that I need to downgrade?
b. Would jkoljo's tools http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537 be the best for the job for a newbie like me?
c. If I want to make a backup of the stock ROM/Radio as the phone is now, in case of something bad happenning and I can use the back-up, how should I do this? please point me to a guide as I can't find one. It's a bit overwhelming reading all the guides so I may have missed it.
d. I suppose after I have all the pre-quisite above done(root etc), I can try flashing to a more efficient ROM and Radio? Would you recommend a pair that works nice for you?
Thank you very much.

Hi,
a) No need to downgrade, your firmware is perfectly rootable.
b) jkoljo's tools are excellent, perfect for everyone, newbie's & power users.
c) Once rooted, ENG S-OFF & ClockworkMod Recovery installed you can make a backup of your complete setup, everything is backed up.
d) Personal preference, MrGaraks MIUI 1.4.15 v6, Radio_12.35d.60.140fU_26.08.03.07_M_Test
Don't be nervous, your in good company at XDA. I am assuming you have got your PC environment set up, HTC Drivers, ADB, SDK, etc...
Does your father have any specific language requirements? E.g Vietnamese.

Thank you for your prompt reply. You may think it's nothing to answer these as they seems simple enough, but they have lifted a chunk of weight from my nervousness.
My father's English is alright-ish I suppose I can install a ROM with a Vietnamese langugae pack for him (LeeRoid I think), but that is still second priority to a smooth ROM. Plus, keeping things in English would help me troubleshoot for him if there's a problem Having him saything technical term in in VIetnamese and me having to look for something in English may be difficult.
I have installed HTC Sync, Android SDK, and ADB(from Android SDK, if I'm correct). I think I may be ready to dive.
Please anyone else, I would appreciate any input at all. Thanks in advance.

Are you wanting to set up the handset so it will work straight "out of the box".
I set my wife's Desire HD up for her, as she has no concept of how to make things work, she just want's them to work with no messing around.
I can provide you with the setup I applied to her phone if you like.

Actually, that will be very handy! Ultimate after making core software changes as above, customisations like these are what I am looking to do next. If you don't mind sharing and a lot more typing Thank you.

No problem at all.
From this point, I will assume you have rooted, applied ENG S-OFF & Radio S-OFF and installed ClockworkMod Recovery (3.0.2.5)
At the moment, in terms of UI, functionality and ease of use I think MIUI (1.4.15) has all those bases covered.
MrGaraks MIUI 1.4.15 v6 is almost perfect, there are a few changes I make before flashing the ROM, (Removing certain apps, tweaking settings (to my preferences)).
Onced flashed and booted I install a few other apps to further tweak the setup, these can then be removed if needed.
Ok, here are the apps I remove from the ROM.zip
- Backup.apk (MIUI built in backup app, not needed in my opinion)
- quickboot-1.apk (Again, not needed on my wife's phone as she doesn't know a bootloader from a boot lace)
- Email (Use for external email, i.e hotmail, yahoo, etc...not GMail, again not needed)
- File Explorer
- LiveWallpapers (Including, Picker, Smoke, Music, Visualisation)
- miui-dev.apk (Access to the MIUI-Dev forums)
- Protips.apk
- SoundRecorder
- VoiceDialer
Here are the tweaks I make to build.prop
- ro.sf.lcd_density=220 (Default =240)
- wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=120 (Default =15)
- dalvik.vm.heapsize=48m (Default =64m)
- ro.ril.enable.prl.recognition=0 (Default =1) - Enable for use in China
Once I have made these changes I flash the ROM & reboot twice (just to be safe, not technically required now).
Once booted I set up the handset with my wifes Google Account and install the following apps
- ClockSync (Syncs the clock to an atomic clock - Turn off auto network time)
- FasterFix (Enables the use of a local ntp time server)
- AdFree (Removes adverts from apps & browser)
- ROM Manager (Make ROM backups)
- Busybox Installer (Install latest version 1.19.0)
- Titanium Backup (Backup apps & app data)
- WebKey (Enables me to provide remote assistance to my wife, similar to VNC)
- SetCPU (Set CPU profiles to maximise battery life and performance)
Apologies for the large screen shots.
As you can see I tidy all the apps away into folders and use one screen for simplicity. I use Music & Market quite a bit so I keep them out.

Wow, what can I say! I really appreciate your efforts, especially spending your time with the screenshot. Now I know I can choose programs from a ROM, very much like customising a Windows Setup bootdisc, I am sure to spend more time digging.
I have now sucessfully managed to have ENG S-OFF & Radio S-OFF. Put a Lycra SIM in and it works, so I guess Sim is Unlocked (it may even be Unlocked already before all this). I have to say, the process was simple enough and I am a lot more confident now that the easy part is over LOL. I am also glad I didn't need to downgrade or get a Goldcard, which would makes thing more complicated.
Now onto ClockWorkMod and a whole new overwhelmin word of ROM flasing.
Thanks so much! I am sure to be back with more questions

having some problems here. i wan to flash back to stock rom, totally new in here, someone mind help? will appreciate it ) someone pls reply asap

Hi,
Just wondering why is this step nessesary?
1) Flash a standard official Diamond Rom of your choice
Can I just flash on top of rom that i'am using now?
Yes you can, I just prefer to flash a stock rom first....
23025
newer build pls
In my opinion a good basic ROM to just add whatever you want. In much ROM (not negative to other chefs) are apps with some do not use..
I like this very clean ROM. Thanks for your work man!!
How is this supposed to work? I downloaded the file and put it on main storage (4gb). Did points 4 and 5.. I still got the "energy rom" i installed yesterday.
What did i not understand?
Make sure there is no other file called DIAMIMG.nbh in the top level of your internal storage before you drop this one onto there.
In that case I should have got an error asking to overwrite? But I checked now and its not.
What is supposed to happen when I come to #4? I got the multicolored "boot screen". Then I did #5 and nothing new happened - my old ROM booted..
You hold down volume down, arrow back button (not the centre wheel)
failing that you can always use the CustomRUU.exe way from your PC. (have attached this file for you)
Just make sure the DIAMIMG.nbh file is in the same folder as CustomRUU.exe and you can install it this way.
Ah - Im sorry Now I got another menu telling me to "restore image" or something.
Seems to work great. Thanx for explaining to me
You have to press the hot key to install the rom...
Restart and press Vol. down and the "Back" button
A menu saw with options...
Thats all...

Tested Build 23025 this morning and have deleted it, for me this is a step back by Microsoft.
Horrible, top and bottom, nasty lens magnify thing, uses way to much ram, will wait for newer builds.
I decided to revert back to my first version, seems to run faster, smoother, have updated the links on the first post...will stick with this a while until microsoft get there act together...
Love it!
Yo, Thuduk!
Thanks for a nice rom - I've been searching for a clean rom without too much fuss, and it really can't get much cleaner than a fresh WinMo6.5 install
On another note, earlier, I was running HTC stock rom/radio and battery seemed to last for about 20-24 hours with fair usage. However, now it seams that it only lasts for about 12 hours or so. Does WinMo have that much to say in regards to battery usage? (I'm not totally newb - the device isn't running high brightness, bluetooth etc the whole day ).
When only having a clean WinMo6.5 install and not running fancy stuff all day, is the radio then most likely the culprit? And what radio did you find works best with a clean WinMo and your device?
(I'm running the 1.15.25.14 radio)
And btw - I'm really clueless in regards to howcome some radios drain some peoples Diamonds while others don't - it should all be the same hardware? - Very strange imo..
Thanks for a lean rom!
Regards,
butabi
The radio I use is 1.13.25.24 and get pretty good battery life, not sure how long though
i tried flashing it from my internal storage. But It say's NO IMAGE FILE. But DIAMIMG.nbh is in the root directory of my internal storage. Any explanation why I cant file the file in my internal storage? thanks
I have hard spl 1.4 from Deepshining.
I've been using your ROM for the past 2 days now and its incredibly clean.
However, i'm having a few problems with connectivity.
Wifi would connect now and then, even when the password was correct for the modem, it would continue to try and connect but never establish a connection. The same was true with trying to use O2 GPRS. This would connect, but then it would do nothing within the browser.
For instance I tried to load google.com. When I tap in the address the bar will fill up 1/10 of the way and just stop, the screen would just stay blank. this happens with both internet explorer and Opera. At first I thought it was the Radio and flashed from the recommended 1.13.25.24 to 1.09.25.23 but i am having the same problem. Wifi will connect, but when i try to use GPRS same problem. Also once i try to use Wifi after GPRS with this radio, it will no longer connect also.
I've hardreset several times but still the same problem. Are you or anyone else experiencing similar problems ?
@rdelsol, try installing the rom from your pc.
@sexygenius, no i do not have this problem, i sugest fash with official rom, hard reset, flash this rom, hard reset...
best of luck

[SatusROM] R2.6 - Windows Phone 6.5 with HTC Sense 2.5 ~ Resembles HTC Official ROM

Windows Phone 6.5 with HTC Sense 2.5 - SATUS ROM R2.6 FINAL
No cheesy customization. The goal is to try to resemble HTC Official ROM. Those who need customization, this is not a ROM for you. Please choose other ROMs.
This is the final ROM for Windows Phone 6.5 Satus ROM series. I will move on to 6.5.3. This ROM fix some more bugs in R2.5. The purpose is to create a ROM that you can keep and downgrade to in case 6.5.3 does not meet expectation. There is not much changes in R2.6, if you are happy with R2.5, you do not need to upgrade to R2.6.
[What's new?]
Similar features to 2.0 and 2.5 But with:
- HTC Sense Internet Bookmark now works.
- New CleanRam 1.9
- Fix G-Sensor Conflicts.
- Now, only one Advanced Network Icon.
- Adjustment to Comm Manager.
- Some minor bug fixes.
[What to do after install rom?]
- Microsoft Titanium is default UI because it consumes significant less memory. If you like HTC Sense, you need to enable it manually (Start -> Settings -> Today -> Items)
- Google Maps was left out so that you can install the newest version. Go to google and install it.
- Those who like old WM Message client. Search the forum and find a cab file that disable HTC Message
- Set a password, so that you won't be locked out at Titanium lock screen.
OR
Use this remedy for the lock screen unresponsive problem:
If the slider got unresponsive, point your finger to the clock at bottom of the screen, then drag left and right. The slider will be responsive and allow you to unlock the phone.
[Rules]
Do not complain about HTC Sense Memory Usage. You cannot change anything. Diamond memory is limited for new thing. Disable Sense before using memory intensive programs or use following solutions:
Solutions:
1) Use Clean ram or SKtools FREE RAM service will help. This service will monitor your RAM memory and recover free Ram automatically without your notice.
2) Change pagepool size will give you more memory. There will be a trade off for speed and memory.
3) Disable services.
4) Remove some HTC tabs like stock or calendar.

[Requirements]
1. Any HTC Touch Diamond (GSM) Phone Including HTC Touch Diamond US 3G Unlocked.
2. Hard-SPL is needed before flashing this ROM. Search the forum and learn how to obtain and flash Hard-SPL. Failing to do so will brick you phone.
3. Highly recommend to use MTTY to format you phone to make it clean before installing any new ROM to avoid any weird problem.

Great ROM
Thx
The graphics are great but it's really slow. Sense restarts, it hangs up a lot, I think it's too much for the Diamond. The phone become useless with this rom.
The keys doesn't always work (home, end), the photo album almost never starts due to lack of ram.

Did you MTTY your phone? Don't talk nonsense. The fastest rom I have ever built with Sense 2.5.
1) Re The graphics are great but it's really slow. Sense restarts, it hangs up a lot:
If you just use sense as normal for calling, email, sms, twiter, photo, etc., Sense will work great and never restart. If you use many programs at the same time, of course it out of memory. That why I include Clean RAM so that you can clean the junk in the RAM.
The fact is that I have already given out a note about this memory issue.
2) Re The phone become useless with this rom:
With this statement, it is like an end to development and sharing here. I spent my time to build and share for free. Not a single penny collected or even asked. Are you really sure this ROM makes your phone useless?? So, just use other ROM period.
3) Re The keys doesn't always work (home, end): Not True. Got to be kidding me!

When I test it, it is pretty more stable and smooth to touch. Clean RAM Level 3 improves free ram up to 74% free with sense enabled.
It's the first time using your rom and simply I expected much more. For me it's way to slow and unstable to use the phone with it (I used MTTY).
You don't need to be upset by the critics.

Was that the constructive critics for improvement to you? Critics by stating that a ROM makes your phone useless? Seriously?? I don't build a ROM for someone to blame me that my ROM make his or her phone useless.
Did you see any ROM out there running Sense that doesn't have memory issue if running many things at once? If you want Sense, you need to accept this fact. Otherwise, disable it. I didn't enable it on your phone in the first place.
My phone is running this ROM. It works great. For that reason, I believe your comment is false.

+1
I like this fully featured rom that stays close to the original htc style as well.
I also like the fact that satus is nice enough to fix all the bugs before moving onto 6.5.3 so we can have a stable 2.6 rom to fallback on just in case.
Cheers
The only reason I took to uploading/flashing my ROM was because of Satus Rom. Well, its the only ROMs i ever installed, and I dont think I will need another ever.
I really love my Diamond with the SatusRom, and have infact started using it more because of the ROM. With WM 6.1, I was only using it for calls, music.... I know find my Diamond MORE useful...
Infact, i am looking for a Satus Rom for Touch Cruise (if there is one, please let me know). I can flash using Satus ROM any day.

I just tried it...here is what I do
1. Make sure SD is unmount
2. open Superclick v1.5.5
3. select 'unroot', you will see the command line keep going and then keep looping
saying cannot re-mount the read access....
4. Ignore that looping message, restart your phone, and kill Superclick
5. Wait until phone boot up, unmount SD card again
6. open superclick and select 'root' this time, you just see a popup saying your phone is rooted.
7. i did the 'shell root' and then 'allow non-market apps' also.
8. Remount SD card.
9 Wala....open titaniumbackup and it works....
Hope this work for everyone...

Thanks! been waiting for this! will try and report!
great will give it a try and report
Remeber guys...this is just a base to get the T-Mobile US crowd up and running. I am working on a BlueTopia NAND and will post it shortly...but before I get knee deep into Topiaizing it I want to find a stable base.
The most important feedback I am looking for is related to data drops. I am doing something differnt in this build that I have not done in any of my others. It's not really anything top secret but don't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet cause some people may form a bias opinion.
Happy Flashing...and Merry New Year!

I love me some xda devs!
downloading nooooowwww!!!!
BBL to report.
Well the nand flash went like pie ... easy peasy.
The build felt sluggish for me, problem was powersaver.
Many thanks dude - Good work!
Finally seemed too unstable for me, changed to MDJ in sig.
Updated: It's up and running.... Data Wifi and 3G seem to be working fine. Market download is fast. Before installing any application, original storage is 650MB available Will spend more time to test it. First impression: very smooth.
Downloading and will report back. For future ROM, would you consider leaving the TMobile stuff out (my account and visual voicemail)? we can always download those from the market. Thanks
Htc Loacations and News
Does this build have HTC locations and HTC news ?
wow!!! very quick work! Downloading now and I will report back...
Great! Will try this on.
Thanks!
Btw, how to root it??
Is the MMS going to work correctly (non-blurry pics) like usual for us US people CMYLXGO?
Instead...saying Oh Great, That is Fast, Please keep these comments to yourself, I think you can use the THANK YOU button to actually say thanks. Try it first, and then get back and write a Review. As to what is working, and what is not working....and As well you may kindly suggest to the Dev as to what you want...Plz lets keep this thing clean, so we don't waste time looking for information, or looking up for the answers.

Themes / Apps / Mods 📳🔥PixelFlasher for Google Pixel 6 Pro Support Thread.

This is the support thread of PixelFlasher
(PixelFlasher is an open-source self contained GUI tool to facilitate Pixel phone device flashing/rooting/updating with extra features).
Note: This thread is meant for issues and problems faced in Google Pixel 6 Pro devices, generic issues that are device agnostic should be discussed in the main thread.
For full details on where to download / usage and feature set of the tool, visit the main thread at XDA or the project's Github page.
Troubleshooting:
If you need support or assistance, the best way to get is by generating a support file from within PixelFlasher.
You can hit that big Support button on the main screen, or select it from the Help menu.
The generated support.zip file is sanitized (redacted) to keep your sensitive information (username device id ...) private.

this is an interesting project.
can you add a way to flash all partition/boot slots easily for new users? I think that can resolve a ton of issues. (the flash tool doesn't do this, just reinstalls some of the images like bootloader and raidio).

Flawless one click update. Thanks. This going to be my default update tool.
Just used it to flash April update on my 6 Pro. Worked like a charm. Thanks.
Also used this to get to April from February and it was one of the simplest things I've ever had to do. Excellent work on this.
It keeps saying magisk is not on my phone, but it is, and it's not hidden.
According to the logs it thinks my phone is not rooted, but it is.
Edit: Followed the instructions and it updated perfectly though, just weird it thinks my phone is not rooted. Awesome app my friend, will be using this as long as it works!

Setup dedicated profile directory.
Put logs in the profile directory and maintain log history.
Plumbing for Linux support (just the flashing part is left to do).
Plumbing for new workflow.
Bugfix to handle name conflict in ROM filename.
Various minor improvements.
Update documentation.
Forgot to mention this but I was running this last night and did a dry run before the real thing, it progressed but my cable was apparently faulty so it lost connection mid way (good thing I did dry run and thank you for having it). Anyway, when it lost connection it caused the app to lock up. I closed it in task manager but the files were stuck in use and I had to find and kill the processes still open to free them up before I could start again.
Suggestion: add a check for and close of any existing processes related to the pixel flasher program if it gets reopened to avoid things being stuck in use. I work in IT so I was fine poking around to kill those processes but not everyone will be.
If you can't, maybe just add the list of processes to the OP so people can kill them on their own.

The reason that happened is because PixelFlasher is running flash-all equivalent script, which has fastboot commands in it, most fastboot commands (aside from informational ones) are blocking, i.e. it waits for device.
Because your cable was faulty and your device was not appearing connected, it got blocked waiting for it.
It's a good idea to display a message and the PID of the spawned process, the user can kill it if they wish.
I really don't want to intervene with that spawned process as it is the one flashing your phone, any glitch in there and it could mess up the phone.

That's a good idea as well, better to not force a closure of the process and instead inform then give the user the information necessary to close it themselves. It was definitely the fastboot process that was holding the files. Once I killed that it was fine for me to proceed. Providing a pop up with the PID or even just the process name (unless the PID is always the same) and instructions in that pop up would certainly help someone get out of a jam without needing to reboot the computer.
I've done some stuff like this project with batch but this blows that completely out of the water. Excellent work, you should be proud of what you've given to the community.
can I also root my Pixel with that?

Need a howto (phone firmware change)

Hey guys. I'm new here. Hope I've posted this on the right section.
Anyhow, I have the xiaomi note 8 phone (global version) and I wanna update it to the Indian version
for the purpose of adding built-in call recording (which is available on the Indian ver, according to my research)
I've already found from where to download it, that said, I've never done something like this before, and I'd appreciate some guidance on how to go about it properly (without ruining my phone). Could someone please kindly provide me with a simple to follow step by step guide? I have Windows 7 OS btw.
I'd consider myself to have excellent technical skills & computer knowledge, but as said before, this one's a bit out of my depth and I wanna make sure everything is done correctly, so my phone would remain functioning afterwards, and all help would be greatly appreciated!

if you need only call recording use "true phone"
if you still want to change the whole rom make sure it's the right variant
redmi note 8 = ginkgo
redmi note 8 T = willow
miui roms have firmware inside so if you flash the wrong variant your phone is gone
also make sure you remember your MI account
download the rom + adb drivers and flash the rom using xiaomi flash tool
Thanks for your help loopypalm!
One question though, that call recording app you've mentioned, does it allow recording in stealth? Without telling the other person "your call is being recorded" I mean, as that kinda defeats the purpose.
One more Q, is using the xiaomi MI account a must for pre-changing the ROM? Can't I just restore things from the Google account/backups? Thanks.

the MI account is the biggest must
you can't config anything if you lost it
or you can unlock the bootloader and use a custom rom (which is the better option)
I've tried that call recording app, but there's one thing I couldn't resolve which is bothering me: Lock screen text notification of missed calls. With the default google dialer, it used to display something like "missed call, name" but with this one, nothing! Best I've accomplished is blinking LED notification, but then I have to go to the TP app and see who the call was from. Is there any way to address it? I've been thru the app's settings but couldn't find the option.
Also, excuse my ignorance, but if I have my contacts sync'd to the Google account, take regular automated backups into google drive of both whatsapp & phone (app data, call history, sms & device settings) and manually backup the phone's DCIM (photo/video folder) to my computer periodically, is there anything (backup wise) that I'm missing out by not using xiaomi's own backup solution? I have an MI account, but never really used it due to security/privacy concerns of having my data stored by a Chinese company.
Also, thanks again for all of your help! It's much appreciated.

i never told you to use it
if you install a miui rom (or just wiped "data") it will ask for the mi account to complete the boot, so you can't login to system or restore anything if you forgot the mi account
I appreciate the quick response! Anyhow, it's already set as the default phone app, I've given it all the required permissions, and I have all the notifications enabled (from settings>apps>manage apps>true phone>notifications) and also enabled specifically for missed calls, but this doesn't seem to work for some reason, not sure if it's a theme incompatibility or a bug in the version used (I'm using the exact version you've mentioned) but maybe I'll try to rule those out later.
Now, about the MI account, so if I understand it correctly, you're saying it's only needed to make the phone usable after changing the ROM and that I don't need to make actual use of it (in terms of backup functionality)?

yes
My only lock screen settings are in settings>lock screen & settings>notifications>lock screen notifications, and I don't have the option you've mentioned. TP has lockscreen notifications enabled, but they're just not working (even with the latest version, a different theme, and after a reboot) and this part was working fine with the default Google dialer previously. LED notification is working, but not text. Anyhow, it seems I'd be going with the ROM swap later on. Will let you know how it went. And thanks again for all of your help!
Update: Had it rough and things didn't go as expected!
So, I downloaded the mi flash tool & full India ROM, extracted the rom, ran the mi flash tool and gotten all kind of errors that contained .NET in em, so I've installed .NET framework 4.8 (this didn't resolve it) and after googling, it turns out it's a bug in the app which requires the log folder to be manually created, so I've done that (and it was fully resolved) but then when I tried to flash, it said the phone is locked! So I've looked up on how to resolve it, and I've had to change some settings from developer options on the phone, as well as download an additional xiaomi tool for unlocking (which required SMS verification) and it took me multiple tries to get it work, eventually gotten it to work using mobile data & QR scanning, but then it said I have to go back to the developer options>mui unlock and associate it with the MI account, so done that, tried again... and damn app said I have to wait 168 hours (7 days) before trying again, which definitely sucks! I'll revisit this in a week or so and hopefully have better luck next time!
For whom it may concern: unlocking the bootloader is ALWAYS the first step for any phone hacking -- apart from flashing stock OTA updates...
And, yes, it requires a Mi account and takes a full week with any *mi device, if you do everything right. To the best of my knowledge, there's no escaping this.

unlocking the bootloader is better, you can install a custom recovery (twrp/Ofox) and in case you mess up something you can fix it easily (unlike locked bootloader)
keep in mind that when you unlock the it ,all data will be erased,so move your important data somewhere ...
in case you need them :
-VBMETA (important to have for the custom recovery)
-Clean flash steps
i suggest you try some aosp roms , maybe you will like more than Miui ...
