How to multiplayer over wifi??? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all
I have a question about getting multiplayer games to work over wifi.
I used to have a Palm Pre and it was as simple as opening the mobile hotspot app and having other devices connect to me and then we would be able to play. Now I still have my palm pre with all the gamesloft games I purchased and have purchased some for my evo.
I have tried the tweaked mobile hotspot on myns rom along with wifi tether and this dos not seem to work.
Can anyone help me get this working?
Im am currently running myns warm two poiint two rls5 and netarchy cfs havs more kernel.

Try connecting to the same wireless network, such as your wireless network at your home or an unsecured network you stumble across.

No that doesn't work.
If I set my pre up to host a game like sandstorm the evo recognizes it and can join. Now if I set the Evo to host a game the pre never finds it. This is over my home wireless.
I'd like to be able to not need anyone else's networks and have the phone do the work.
I've been using my Google skills over the past few weeks and its been mentioned that android can't provide adhoc or something like that. Nothing on this forum though its been mostly other forums. There doesn't seem to be much talk about this issue.

anyone have some knowledge on this subject?

Other android phones not seeing my wifi

Can anyone tell me why other Android phones cannot see my wifi connection while iphones and other computers see it plain as day? I am using "Wireless Tether for Root Users"
you need a version that supports infrastructure mode... google a little
ah....gonna force educate me....lol, will do. Thanks
found this

You posted this in the wrong section. Your question goes in the Q&A, not in the Development.
I wonder why Google won't allow adhoc out of the box.
I was surprised those Apple phones and mp3 players of theirs pick up my WiFi.
in case you still haven't found it, the newest experimental version of wifi tether (http://android-wifi-tether.googlecod...2_0_5-pre2.apk) should support infrastructure mode. but i haven't tested this myself so i can't confirm it works. if it doesn't... i dunno... pay the $30 / month? lol
I installed the expermental tether, works with my laptop will try tomorrow at work and see about other phones. doesn't really matter if it works or not I was just curious as to why the iphones could connect and not the androids. sry for posting in wrong section, i'd move it if i could.
Cheers
WT2.0.5 works with other phones. Since it's in infrastructure mode, everything will (should) be able to see it just as it would see a wireless router.
Note that this will only work on the Evo, other phones can't be seen in infrastructure mode.
It works for the Evo. I have tested it numerous times and had multiple clients connected at once.
Awesome app.

[Q] Anyone using the hotspot functionality with iPad or anything?

First post. So, I have a Evo but I won a iPad (wifi only) online the other day and i'm thinking about keeping it or selling it. I know Sprint has a Hotspot option that you can use on the phone but I don't want to pay $30/month for it which is crazy in my opinion. I downloaded EasyTether off the appstore so I can tether for free which is great on my laptop, but if I keep the iPad and take it around with me i want to be able to get online with it, so it would be great to have the Hotspot functionality on my phone. I know you can activate hotspot functionality by rooting the Evo, but I just updated to 2.2 and as far as I am aware there is no 2.2 root option yet.
So in the meantime I guess I was just wondering if anyone who has a iPad uses the Evo's hotspot functionality. I was also curious in general how it performs over 3G with wifi devices and if there is any option like Easy Tether so you can use hotspot functionality for free until there is a root for 2.2 on Evo?
Thanks for any input/answers and I look forward to contributing to the forums.
If You Root Your Phone You'd Now Be Able To Use Froyo (2.2) With Wireless Tether 2.0.5-pre7 I'm Actually Posting This From My LapTop On Fresh 3.1.0.1 Using The Above Named Wireless Tether.. My Girl's Cousin Has A WiFi Only Ipad And I Was Letting Him Use My Wifi Tether To Connect And It Was Working Flawlessly.. Congrats On Winning The IPad
We took a trip to the mountains a week ago. I used the EVO hotspot utility to connect my laptop and my wife's ipad and my son's ipod touch to the internet all at the same time! Worked like a charm! just remember to change the default setting at set a new SSID and password.
I believe that if you can connect with your laptop you should be able to connect with your iPad. I've always been able to connect with my iPad whether it was adhoc or AP mode.
Well i started paying for the 30 bucks option becuase the free wifi cap my speeds real bad and i was rooted back then but now im stock with rooted icons wierd but dont work but works awsome the hotspot for me i have 3 360 coneected amd 2 ps3 and my msi netbook connected and works bad ass i love it yea some lag but it ok for me

Well, I can connect my Laptop to my Evo via USB using EasyTether Lite so I can get online with my laptop for free but I need free Hotspot functionality so I can use it with my iPad, but idk what I could do since I updated my Evo to 2.2.
I don't know if this will help you but there is a chance you can downgrade your Evo and then root it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
hold your ipad differently, or buy a case.

I find people that type with caps on the first letter of every word to be very annoying. And there's no point.

I know that iPods (3rd gen) aren't able to connect to AP networks, since I've hosted from my laptop before and it couldn't see it.

If you want the iPad, keep it. It sound like the iPad can connect to even AP infrastructure networks. Although I'm pretty sure the Hotspot app, and wireless tether, both aren't AP network (although I don't know what it hosts, that's not my area ).
Basically, Hotspot would work if you felt like $30. Otherwise I'd wait for 2.2 to get rooted.
I honestly don't know what I'm saying anymore cause I'm watching tv and writing this. And there's models...
Oops I wasn't aware that EasyTether was done through USB. In that case, since you don't have root and upgraded to 2.2, you can either set up internet sharing on your laptop and connect using adhoc mode, or pay the $30 for the official tethering.

or you can pay $0 to root your phone, install any 2.2 ROM, and use android wifi tether.
Froyo (Android 2.2) has Wi-fi Hotspot capability: no need to root
Froyo (Android 2.2) has Wi-fi Hotspot capability: no need to root
Either 1: Open up your Apps page and look for the widget "Wi-Fi Hotspot" (on my Desire it is placed just before the YouTube widget"
or 2: open Settings, Wireless & networks and select "Portable Wi-fi Hotspot"
This has allowed me to connect my iPad via my Desire's data connection.
the desire on official froyo unrooted has a hotspot widget preinstalled as mentioned above.
my friends iphone and laptop spotted it fine. so no reason why an ipad wouldnt find it.
i note that evo can connect to many devices as can be seen from other posts here, but the htc desire has a max limit of 2 devices via the wifi hotspot at a time, although i dont know if you could connect more devices by using usb tether and bluetooth tether at the same time too. you dont need apps from anywhere for wifi or usb tether on 2.2 official version. i dont know if 2.2 allows bluetooth tether but if satnav devices can piggy back to net connection on phones i dont see why tethering cant be done but might be slow. there are apps on cnet for wifi and blueetooth tethering (cnet editor reviewed apps).
I believe the Sprint approved version of Froyo has Android WiFi removed and replaced by their own app.
Now that it's possible to root, I installed wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre9.
My iPad connects, but no Internet access!
Ipad works fine
I use the Wireless Tether with my IPAD all the time works great I am using Fresh 3.3.0.1
Hotspot and wireless tether are both AP, zune hd doesn't do adhoc and i was able to connect to my evo with it

[Q] [EVO APP HELP] - Wireless Tether

Hey Gang-
Current set up. Unrevoked, running Caulkin's ROM.
After exploring the great features of my ROM, I wanted to try out the Wireless Tether app. After trying again and again and playing with the settings, I was able to get my laptop to connect to the Evo but could not get a connection to any website.
This evening, I removed and re-loaded the app directly from the developer's website, still having the same problem. As far as I can tell, I can connect to the Evo via my laptop but I don't seem to be getting a connection to any websites. The data stream log shows some activity.
Any suggestions?
Hrm mine stopped working as well. Nothing will connect to it since Saturday. I've turned off encryption and access control (which both worked till saturday) and no dice. I've tried 3 versions of it and no go
I've not changed Anything else since then that would mess with tether. Im running Azreal 3.0 which seems to enable the official sprint hotspot and THAT connects just fine tho I'm worried I might get charged since my accounts not provisioned for it.
Anyone else have issues with the android tether lately?
I am running MikFroyo 4.4 rom and have had no issues with either Wireless Tether or Sprint Hotspot wireless tethering. On some other roms I have used I have had to turn Wireless tethering off and on a couple of times before my laptop fully connected with the internet. And as far as Sprint charging you, unless you are downloading a ton of crap constantly chances are you will go by unnoticed.
all you have to do is not use it.. mine did the same today
i just went to the market and downloaded barnicle wireless tether
its actually a bit fater and works the same.

[Q] Bluetooth tethering

I would like to use the "bluetooth PAN tether" option in wireless tether to tether to my EEE Transformer.
The options are greyed out for bluetooth in the settings for wirless tether, and I've spent a few hours looking around the Epic 4G threads on normal google searches all I've found is that it won't work because the kernel isn't compiled with the proper kernel option.
I wanted to put a link here but if you google "epic 4g wifi tether bluetooth greyed out" it's the Issue 924 page on the google code link.
I'm running Simply AOSP 3.1.1, and my buddies are running the same rom, and I believe the options were greyed out on ACS 1.1.0 as well.
Does anyone have any ideas or have any experience with this problem? Maybe I need to run a different kernel, however I'm not sure about the compatibilities between different roms.
Thanks for any help you may have, and also thanks to all devs for always making my epic better!
Unfortunately, I don't have the answer.
But I am curious, why would you prefer to tether by bluetooth rather than Wifi Ad-Hoc/Infrastructure? It seems to me that these methods are more stable/secure, and just all around easier to use.
I'm interested in the lower power consumption, and I'm not worried about the lower data rate. Although I wasn't aware of security issues with bluetooth, I should look into it though.
The other detail I should mention is that the transformer doesn't tether ad-hoc without rooting, and I'm not ready to root it yet. I'd also be fine with wired tethering if it worked but it hasn't so far.
Well with midnight rom 6.0 beta 1, the bluetooth option returns. I haven't gotten it to work yet but it's at least available. Does anyone know if gingerbread is supposed to be able to wired (USB) tether to honeycomb tablets?
