Frozen Epic after CWM 3.0.0.5 Installation! HELP - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just installed CWM 3.0.0.5 and now my Epic is frozen upon reboot! It keeps going to the SAMSUNG black screen and wont move from that.
I reboot in recovery mode and get to the CWM menu but cant do anything from there, cant wipe device, cant remove anything, etc.
Help me fix this!
Im a college student that needs his phone working ASAP!
Thank you!

I warned you in your other thread about not just jumping in head first into an empty swimming pool.
Ok lets see if I can help, so after you rooted with cwm3 and booted into cwm3. It converted all your files correct? If so you probably missed the most important step. After its done converting you need to flash an ext4 compatible rom(cwm3 compatible rom) then you reboot and should be good to go.
Now if you don't have the proper rom on your sd card, you need to go download one and then put it on your sd card, then boot into cwm holding volume down, camera button and power. After it boots into cwm3 use the volume buttons to navigate and the camera button to select, navigate to 'apply zip from sdcard' find your rom you just put on the sdcard and flash it. Its going to be a long day for you, but on the bright side your name is cheech and its 420 sonny. Good luck.
How will you ever get through college if you don't read?

How can I access the SD card if I cant even get past the SAMSUNG screen? I have my phone plugged in and I cant get it to recognize on my computer.
And I go to kent, our motto is "Kent read, Kent write, Kent remember last night, Kent state"
xD

I dont even want CWM on here anymore, I just want my phone working. Is there no way that I can just remove CWM and go back to factory?

Lol... your motto says it all. You will need a card reader and put the rom on the sdcard not in any folder(easier to find and it will be at the bottom).
You can still reboot into cwm by holding volume up, camera, and power and while still holding power and camera slide your thumb to volume down and that should get you into cwm. If it doesn't then pull the battery and boot into cwm.
You can return to stock via odin, but I've only used it twice and it was for flashing a modem both times. I've never flashed a rom with odin so I can't really give any quality advice.

Only way I know of is to use odin here is the threadhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773032
If you have a card reader tho you can still save this by doing what I mentioned in my above post, if you have no card reader, its odin and odin only as far as I know.

I wont lie to you.. Im not sure what the difference is, or which one to chose out of the ones you sent me. But Im gonna wing it. Hopefully it works as long as I follow the directions.
Thanks a lot man, Ill keep you posted

Download the stock eb13 cwm2.5 package if you do everything right it will work and if you get stuck refer to that thread and/or the first one I posted.....good luck, just follow the instructions and you'll be cool.

Trying not to sound rude, I really am...
Read man! Check threads in the development forum about flashing and Odin.
You have 2 options like Epic4GEE stated:
1. From a computer, download an EXT4 compatible ROM to your SD card and boot back into ClockWorkMod to wipe caches and flash.
2. Boot into download mode (1 key + power button to boot) and use Odin to put DI18, EB13 or EC05 back on your device.
There are even video tutorials stickied in the General section to assist people. People are here to assist if you have problems, but you have to help yourself by reading the material first. ;-)

No problem.
Answers can be extremely difficult to locate when **** hits the fan or for someone new. The wiki doesn't appear to be kept all that up to date by us, the community, but then again I haven't checked it in like 2 months.
I'll even go one step further and upload my copy of the EB13 Samsung upgrade tool for you. Here
It's a one stop shop to rescue your phone in its current condition if you just want stock again. It is Odin, but wrapped within a Windows installer-like UI. This will erase all your data. Once installed, the phone will upgrade to EC05 via over-the-air update.

Stickies! Right on top of Development...how to fix "bricked" Epic....even though they mean sponged.
Do you BONSAI?

Thank you to everyone who helped me out in this thread. My phone is now fixed. Turns out the .tar / PDA file that I was using in Odin was corrupt and wouldnt work fully.
I used a different version which seemed to work fine, then it upgraded once I turned my phone on.

hands down the best post i've come across on xda... also, very true.
best thread title i've come across although unfortunate.
I used unrevoked 3. That's all. I apparently should have NAND it first, I'm assuming. What should I do to get my old rom back?

If you didnt, dunno what to tell ya man. Better hope there's a trick to it, maybe use the search function.

what rom were you using previously and is the zip for that rom still on your sd?
The previous rom I was using was the stock rom. I did hit backup rom when I was installing it. Now the system has finally started up, but now I'm trying to go through the google settings, and it keeps crashing the phone on step three, and I can't work my way around it, unfortunately.

here a few steps you can try. Assuming that since you was able to use Rom Manager to install Bug's that meant you already have clockwork flashed and working correctly if not you won't be able to use Rom Manager to flash anything.
Steps if you are lucky and still have either damage or any other rom's zip file still on you sd card, if you do not have it, i recommend open up your back cover, take out the micro sdcard and connect it to your pc so that you can download and transfer a ROM that you want to use then put the sdcard back on your phone then follow the steps below.
1) power off you phone. if you can't use the power button then kill the battery.
2) hold the down volume button and the power button while booting up your phone until you see the Fastboot menu before letting those buttons go.
3) you should see a menu with a few choices on it. use the volume key to navigate down/up to where it say Recovery then press the power button to choose it. If everything is working in your favor, your phone should now boot into a black screen with ClockworkMod Recovery xxxxx as your title.
4) from here, you will be using the up/down volume button to navigate to wipe data/factory reset then push the power button to pick it. it will make you scroll down to yes on the next screen to be sure so follow the instruction.
5) after it finished wiping, you may also want to do the same thing with wipe cache patition as well to be sure.
6) if you are on any other menu other than the one with the ClockworkMod title at this point. please go back to it.
7) now pick install zip from sd card and pick the one you want to flash and with much luck you would be up and running in 10 minutes.
good luck.
ps: if you need help or step by step instruction you can email me and will gladly wipe my damn phone and go through it with you. lol seem I love all the ROM from all these developers too much that I pretty much do this at least 5 times a day.

What method did you use. What is your phone software and hardware setup?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
this is the method that i used [ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.2 (works with all version)(2/1/11). im sure i did something wrong do not want to make it seem like i am placing the blame on the dev that wrote this. as for the other info well lets just say im an ass cus i didnt write it down like it was recomended. if it helps any i bought it a month ago max 2 months not shure it that helps.
Can you Boot into Recovery? (Hold Power+Volume Down when phone is off)
Did you create a Nandroid backup?
yes i did trying it now thank you for the help
after i boot into recovery what is next
go down to where it says recovery using the down volume button and click on with the the power button. Hopefully this will take you into recovery mode. If it does take you into recovery mode go down to where it says wipe cache partition and click on it and select wipe. Then go to where it says advanced and click on it. Then click on dalvik cache and click on the then select wipe. If you can do this they you can try to reboot your phone. If not. Let me know.
If you didn't do a backup and you can get into recovery you can do a data factory reset. Its on the green recovery menu.
If you cant get into any of that and you get stuck on a red triangle try holding the power button and the volume up and you should see a menu with a factory reset. click on that and it should wipe your phone.
i tried the first step and it did not take me to recovery mode and of course i did not do a back up cus im a dumb ass. I did manage to get to the screen with the red triangle and did a factory rest. ok another stupid question do i reboot the system or select apply sdcard update zip.
if you did a factory data reset just reboot. Hopefully this will get you back.
It might take a few extra minutes to start up so give it a few extra minutes.
on the white htc evo screen
has it been more that 5 minutes.
still on the evo screen sorry about the delay was talking to my wife, she doesnt know i screwed up my phone had to keep her occupied
Ok give me a minute. Were having storms here so my internet is slow. First you will need a SD card for your phone. Clean it out except for one file you will need to download.
You need to download pc36ing. Zip for 3. 70. 651. 1 just search the form and you can get it for free.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
got the card and the file extracting it to the new sd card as i type this
ok dont extract the file. Just put the whole zip file on the sd card. Once you do this turn off the phone. Pull the battery if you have to. Then start the phone by holding the power button down and the down volume button. This should that us to the boot loader. One click down you should see the HBOOT usb at the bottom. Click down to go there. Once there click the power button then select fastboot, then bootloader. If everything went well you should be ask to flash something. Then select your file on the sd card.
i see what happened. this is why i dont use auto scripts. if one command fails, there is no possible way to find out which. just unroot using an ruu or a pc36img.zip and then do zikronix's there will be root tutorial. i'll link it in my sig soon.
doesnt appear to be reading the file says no image. to be honest not sure if i am doing this right. did you want me to use two different sd cards.
make sure it's named pc36img.zip exactly. and is on the root of ur sdcard (not in any folders). i have the method linked in my sig now btw.

try to follow the above link. This might be a little easier. Don't worry your phone can see be saved. If all else fails your phone is not rooted so you can take it to Sprint and tell them that your phone is jacked and you need a warranty replacement. Last resort.

[MOD] T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Stock Recovery

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Stock Recovery
Some of you have been asking me for the stock recovery, and after a few minutes with Gillbostonian on IRC, I finally got it pulled.
Explination
What we have here is a stock recovery.img pulled from a stock T-Mobile SGH-T989 (Samsung Galaxy S II).
With this you can recover your phone using ODIN, to return it to a factory state.
Downloads
To restore the stock recovery to your phone I have a nice little tar file that will take care of the job for you that you can grab from here.
If you like my work..
and wish to donate you can buy me my very own T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II by using the details posted here.
How to Flash
We are going to be using Odin in this explanation to flash the stock kernel to your phone.
Downloads
First you are going to want to start by downloading all the needed files onto your computer and then place them onto your Desktop.
Samsung Kies
Odin3-v1.85.zip
SGH-T989-Stock-Recovery.tar
Process
Once you have everything downloaded and on your desktop, you are going to want to first install kies.
After this is done you should restart your computer for proper driver installation.
Next, extract Odin to a new folder on your Desktop. Leave the tar in the form it is.
Now, open up Odin by double clicking the .exe in the folder you extracted it to.
The most important step is now, you need to put your device into Download/ODIN mode so your computer will recognize it and be able to flash to it. To do this simply turn your phone off completely (or pull the battery). Then you are going to want to use the following button combination to force your device into download mode:
Hold the volume up/down and power button all at the same time.
Click to collapse
Now ODIN should have recognized your device ( it may take a while for the drivers to complete installation so don't panic the first time).
Lastly, we want to click on the PDA button and then search for the SGH-T989-Stock-Recovery.tar we download earlier and placed on the Desktop.
If all of the above has taken place you are free to hit the Start button.
Rebooting into Recovery
Rebooting into recovery is almost just as easy, but a little less complicated.
Just turn your phone off all the way and boot into recovery by holding down vol up and vol down, pressing power until it vibrates, and letting go of power but at the same time keeping the vol buttons down. (or just by using Rom Manager from the Market.)
Click to collapse
Done!
If all has gone well at this point the flash should be proven successful and your phone should reboot like normal.
If so, please feel pressured to give yourself a pat on the back, that was tough!
Thank you!

No problem man!! It's my pleasure I'm glad that my device has been big help to all of us. we got the stock recovery and now we will get the stock Tmobile full rom for odin in couple hrs..Thanks to Bubby again
Thanks, Bubby. Quite a few of us on the forum have been waiting for this path back to stock before rooting our phones. Your efforts are appreciated!
With out bubby and Gill We wouldnt have this!! Ty again bubby! i will be donating to ur phone once i get paid and i hope everyone else does after this great task u have done for the community!!
Does this also flash the stock Kernel, or do we have to flash UVKID's odin then this odin?
I assume we have to flash UV's odin first, but I just want to be clear.
So just to clarify, after completing this what should you see when you do the both volume buttons and then power button (without USB plugged in)? Is an update from sd card/wipe data screen the stock recovery our phone ships with?
I wanted to see if someone could tell me the series of steps to get this and the kernel loaded.
Do you do this in odin first, and then flash the kernel to get back to stock? Just curious on what it done first, second, third. The directions on the OP are good but I don't know how to get everything to come together.

I don't think it quite matters what you do first or second. I did it in the reverse order. Matter of fact I loaded an old nandroid backup I had made before and then did this. No cwm and no root anymore. This is only what I did though, I can't say it's the correct way. All I can say is everything works for me with these steps (maybe I screwed something up big time who knows).
ODIN BACK TO STOCK!
power off phone
pull out battery
GRAB THIS STUFF :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319830
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper tar file in pit in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers

GSM or LTE Gnex? What ROM were you running?
Golden rule: Do a backup before doing anything to your phone!
Now all you can do is to download EXACTLY same ROM as you were using by now, wipe cache/dalvik-cache, flash this ROM once again and hope that i'll boot. If it won't you'll have to wipe /data is well.

well since you can boot into recovery try searching in your sdcard folders if youve left a ROM .zip there laying around and if this is the case just flash it and youre back on track

ouch... softbrick.
put your phone down.
take a deep breath or two.
If you are old enough, grab a beer and relax for a bit. Think calming thoughts.
Now, start learning about how to mod your GNex. We can help.
Here's your First assignment:
find out if you still have a bootloader by booting into fastboot mode. Report back with your findings and a screenshot!

Still have a bootloader? Are you serious? You need to learn how to use an android device as well.
To the OP: Do a factory reset in Clockwork and go to mounts
and format /system. Flash the ROM zip. Profit.
Absolutely serious. Have you been reading this thread? The OP needs to start at ground zero and stop just trying every tool he/she sees. My purpose was to get this person to do some research and I was establishing a knowledge baseline. One plan I was considering was to help the OP install the GNex toolkit then locate stock images and obtain a working build. Your cryptic one liner bit should prove vastly more useful to this guy though. I'll let you have at it and go back to my dev work. lol at least this post was a good way to make sure gapps/root capabilities are properly cooked into my latest test build ....

U r right i am not good in android but i tried to be and this happens, meanwhile nothing shows after i start the device it shows the !!!! mark with device the PC logo, this happens due to ODin actually the SUMSUNG ADB interface shows ! mark because i cant debug from device even no bootloader works any more thnkz for replying
*facepalm*
OP, you are holding it wrong.
I can think of at least 2 ways to recover from a situation like this. Both are well described in these forums (search works 99% of the time).
....
Oh come on, you don't have the zip of the last rom you flashed, get another one, hey, its free right? **** we dont know nothing about but we'll flash it anyways!
Man...If you have cwm recovery, you're safe. No need to go messing with fastboot (forget odin) just yet. Now stop wasting everybody's time and learn to help yourself.
Here's a few tags to get you started:
cwm, recovery, adb, bootloader, fastboot

i tried more than one day on this issue its only starts with !!! mark on it nothing else, i have attached the pic i cant access any bootloader or any cwm or any thing all i did with Odin and stuck to attached pic even i start the device its shows the same pic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdM2M8Nz6QQ this I used on Odin
thnkzz
As I suspected earlier, it appears that the OP may have trashed his bootloader partition when he tried using Odin to flash the 4.0.2 factory image (which includes a bootloader). At one point he had CWM but not any more since he can't boot to the recovery partition.
Another possibility is that the Odin tool itself places the device in this mode and it can't be manually reverted by starting up in fastboot mode. Looking at the picture, it literally appears that the phone is saying that a flashing operation is half finished but the phone has lost the PC connection... This would be a lot like what I've experienced with iPhones.
In either case, I can deduce that Odin is the tool to use to clear this softbrick.
Hopefully, it'll be flame-off now Sdobron. Perhaps you might want to help out here since I'm not up to speed on the Odin tool myself and would like to learn more about it.
@salym: I know this may be redundant but I need to establish your problem baseline empirically. Once again, can you verify that when you hold vol down/vol up then press power that you get the image you posted?
Use Fastboot!
Dude, it looks like your problem is with crappy boot sector.
While turning on your phone, hold both volume up and volume down buttons, and long press power button untill you feel single vibrate feedback.
Then connect your phone to the computer via USB, and if it doesn't detect drivers, google "samsung android usb driver". Additionally you can install PDANet application (X64 or x86 depending on you system).
THen download Fastboot - there are plenty of instructions how to flash it, and flash stock images (that come with radio, boot sector, rom itself, etc) - there are also plenty of discussions about how to do it. PM if you have any other questions!

phone shuts down/reboots very often

So I thought I would give up my inexperienced life of flashing and possibly bricking my device(sent it in to get jtag repaired), so I attempted to put it back to stock. I got odin up and running, Downloaded(for the most part) the tar that would make it stock again. about 98% into the flashing it failed and made me a little nervous. I later remembered to flash the kernel, and with it, the phone booted up. Fine and dandy one day yadda yadda yadda.
Now comes day 2, and it just randomly turned off and booted again. it got to the little android boot screen, then shut down again, rinse repeat at different times of the boot process, add in some random shutdowns when I'm at the home screen and using my phone and there you have it.
I figured it was using an unfinished stock rom trying it's best to function, so I tried to put in clockwork mod. I did, but it was very difficult as I navigated through clockwork recovery, the phone would select things on its own, making the rooting process a giant pain. With that monkey on my back, I managed to root and install the juggernaut v.5 rom(which totally rocks) to see if the probably persists. The end result was it still happened, but when it didn't, I was able to work with it normally. At this point in time, I am trying to keep my phone turned on because if for a second the screen shuts off, the phone will start trying to shut itself down and game over. This is still very very annoying and was wondering if you fine people would happen to point someone thats green as grass with this stuff in the right direction

You have definitely earned my thanks for providing such hearty solutions! I am super paranoid now when it comes to downloading files like those. my major concern is if the files never download completely :O I followed what was in that first thread to tooth, and as I installed that md5 towards the end I got a giant fail. regardless, I thank you for the awesome support man:good:
Hmm, try reflashing your recovery. Mount your USB (If you cant, take out your SD card, and mount it on your PC) and place this file on the root of your SD card( Just easier to find this way)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/darksidetools/files/SGH-T989_ClockworkMOD_5.0.2.7.zip/download
Flash it, and restart recovery. Your recovery should act normal, and do a clean install of whatever ROM you wish. By the way, Juggs was my first DD (daily driver) to!!
Superwipe?

Lol, no its CWM 5.0.2.7 or aka, CWM non-touch, I got that link from TDJ's OP, he so kindly provided us a link for it. From your OP, it sounds like CWM did not flash correctly, you can flash a recovery within a recovery, you just have to restart it or reboot your phone for it to take into effect. Do you have the T989 or T989D?
lets see

Did you do a clean install? Darkside Superwipe, flash ROM, reboot, wait ten minutes, then reboot?
Sent from AOKP Goodness :-D
Yeah unfortunately it is still randomly rebooting....washing lol
An update to this: all the same symptoms occur, but for some reason when I flashed darkside rom 3 the symptoms occurred less! For example, last night I was able to use this device for 4 hours straight without it acting up. I really wonder what the problem is. I. Mean the thing acts like an angel when in Odin mode, but when it comes. To cwm or anything else it tends to spaz out.
I too have this happening now. I don't know why its been doing it. I was running the latest aokp and than it started rebooting and shutting off. So I went back to my nandroid backup and still continues. Running darkside v7, and problem is still there. Anyone know why this is happening?
It started happening while listening to music.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Everytime I would lock my phone with the power button it'll turn off and stay black vibrating. When I lock my phone using screen off and lock app it won't turn off but to unlock it I have to use the power button, than it turns off.

Bingo. The moment that I touch the power button my phone freaks out and shuts down. If you don't have the stones or craftiness to fix it yourself, you can join me in getting the power button replacement on mobile tech videos

So I went to a T-Mobile store earlier and they told me they can't replace my phone because I'm rooted and they think its the rom, even tho I showed them.
I have to odin flash the original stock rom and go back to T-Mobile to get it replaced.
Know any way you can flash back without an internet connection on a computer?

In the non touch clockwork recovery use menu to scroll down. Home to scroll up. Back to go back. And search to select. I figured it out by my power button clicking things.

the only way i know how is through odin. I've done it a few times. at the end of the flashing I find that the phone turns itself off or something which marks it down in odin as a FAIL..when in actuality it flashed....it just needs a kernel flash and it'll all be candysticks and lollipops.
At this point in my phones life though, however, it is increasingly harder to do anything in clockwork since the button is fudged up. I think I might have to pony up 35$, but if you can Odin your phone back to flash and tell T-Mobile/Samsung about it, you can probably get the repair for free
