My first phone went by no problem, but my screen died and now I have a replacement. Im following the method to root the my G2 listed on the CM wiki. (Wont let me link it)
No matter what version of gfree I use, it fails to powercycle the eMMC and wont completele the process.

Hmm... I think its better to use unforgivens method rather than Rage but that's just me. What problems are you getting with visionary? Visionary should just help you temp root. Once you get temp root that's when you start doing the real rooting. Try to follow unforgivens method but like I always say I advice to use the gfree method.

I wonder if HTC is making changes to the hardware that get in the way of using gfree. When I rooted my G2, My brothers G2 and my Wifes MyTouch 4G (all bought in November) I used gfree 0.3 with no issues. When I tried to use the same to root my sons MyTouch 4G (bought in February) it failed to power cycle eMMC, same result with gfree 0.5, luckily in my case gfree 0.2 worked, sounds like that doesn't work in your case (you said you tried all version, would expect that includes 0.2)

What is different about these newer phones that gfree isn't working? Is the HBOOT rado or other information off the bootloader screen different?
BTW my original G2 had the screen go out and the replacement I got in January I had no problems using gfree 0.3 to root it. My son's MyTouch 4G I got only a couple weeks after I got my replacement G2 but obviously there could be a bigger difference in when they were manufactured.
Check out this interesting series of postings from the Incredible S forum (regarding newer and seemingly unrootable Desire HDs): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980497&page=28
Nothing seems different to me. My HBoot is the same as stock, although after I rooted my first one, I flashed down to .76 although I'm unsure about my radio, I do know my radio was higher(26.06 I think) when I had CM7. When I get a chance later, I'm going to try flashing the release PC10IMG, even and maybe it will make a difference.

I know this is a risky situation but i think you should use "Visionary" to root it. This Permanant Root method can be found at:

Hope I helped
I already stated that visionary dosn't work on my g2, thank you anyways. I tried using unforgiven's method to no avail, I still got s-on at the top of my screen in the hboot. Last thing for me to try is flashing the stock PC10IMG like I mentioned I would earlier, I've yet to do it so wish me luck.

Note: the PC10IMG will not flash because its an older version. You would need a new version of the PC10IMG. Can you give me a details of what you did with unforgivens method? I rooted about 10 g2s owned by my friends with unforgivens method without fail.

Yea okay this is what you should do. You know the files you got put them into the root of your SD card
So rather than putting /data/local
You will put/sdcard/And what ever you have to type.
Just fallow through the steps but this time put the files in the root of the sdcard and in terminal put /sdcard/ rather than /data/local

The safest way to root your device is to follow the method in the wiki, the only way you can brick your device with that method is if you mistype something.
I had never rooted a device until the G2 and did so the day the devs achieved root while having a cocktail after work. Just double check your typing before sending the commands and all will be well.

This really isn't good advice. OP should read the sticky about Visionary having a high chance of bricking devices before trying to temproot. Follow the guide in the wiki for root, it works well just follow instructions and go slow.

you should know that is specifically regarding the permanent root option.
I wouldn't think twice about temp rooting with visionary. it's not going to harm anything. nonetheless, follow the wiki. it's the way to go.
Best way to root is the xda wiki meathod which i used. its based on gfree meathod. also if u have a branded device u need to create a goldcard first and downgrade if your not at firmware 1.34xxx
Why will this forum not rid itself of the visionary ****. It has ruined so many phones it's just GROSSLY irresponsible for the devs to leave that trash on here. It truly is.
This one is the safest method.

Normally when you flash a DESIRE Z HBOOT ON A g2 THE PHONES DOENT COME ON AND IS NORMALLY AT THE HTC LOGO WHICH IS NORMAL (I KNOW) MY QUESTION IS WHY IS MY PHONE NOT SATYING ON THE G2 LOGO BUT RATHER BOOTING INTO MY PREVIOUS ROM BEFORING UPDATING THE HBOOT TO THE DESIRE Z'S?
Didn't the wiki guide have two sections during the root process? One to setup DZ hboot and another for regular if you didn't want to do it at that time? Perhaps you followed the DZ hboot setup during rooting thinking it was part of the normal process?
Or maybe I'm just nuts. It was a long time ago when I did mine.

You're NOT going to want to use Visionary... it's outdated and when you use it you run the risk of bricking her device. Should be stickies to this effect in several places. The best resource for rooting is going to be found here under "Rooting the Vision (G2/DZ)".

Does the downgrading on a G2 using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912 have any chances of bricks on theG2
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Looking over it briefly here: following the instructions to the letter should not result in any kind of brick.
Just follow the instructions, you'll be alright!
There is no brick chance using this guide.
You are only writing a 10 character string to partition17, which just tells the phone you have a low build/software number.
It then uses the built in HTC system, to flash an official HTC rom.
as above, the dd command just reads, it does not write.
all the important partitions on the phone are still write-protected, so nothing bad can happen while you are temp-rooted
