This is the Odin flashable rom I'm using now and I haven't had any problems yet. Besides the other mumbo jumbo features it has, it is running good. It's stock, pre rooted, has clockworkmod 2.5.1.0, and has a couple of fixes and whatnot built in. I like it because of the previously stated features. I don't have to root or put recovery on it. Yeah its only the one click stuff, but when it is already baked in, that's one thing less I have to do. I haven't done a factory reset yet because I haven't needed to. I am assuming that a full reset (in cwm recovery) will already be rooted so you don't have to worry about that.
The only things I did was put my hosts file in and clear the multimedia proxies.
Yes this might not be the answer you are looking for but I wouldn't throw out the possibility that something got messed up somehow. Instead of pulling my hair out trying to troubleshoot, I think I would just start completely over.
It is possible you might have deleted something that should have stayed. The file churro was talking about, if I remember correctly, is a file that might need to stay.

Update prl?
I had failed mms messages when I had an old prl I updated and fixed it.
Also it's pretty common for the sprint mom's server to fail so I would try a little later..

i odin'd to di18 and was able to send one off

hmm i wonder if that battery mod broke it?

If you use a task killer, stop. Or at the very least don't do a level 2 ram clear, this prevents both texts and mms from sending.

i do neither
I restored all apps and it came back
I was the sprintextension apk that did it

DG27 to DK28 So I can FROYO

Hey All. I have been on a roller coaster with My Samsung Epic.
Recently I Finally from DK28 updated to Froyo for my Samsung Epic and flashed Viper trinity ROM on it. It was cool up until certain apps did not work well such as Tom the talking Cat and Hulu. Furthermore I rely heavily on my Sprint Navigator, which was Removed after the Viper ROM flash.
I tried to factory restore and reset but had no luck, my phone actually never was able to reset as from the Privacy reset through the Phones gui it would freeze, and if I did the -vol, camera, and power it still kept the viper ROM.
With out further reading I watched a youtube video and ended up using Odin 1.6 and reset it back to DG27. I tried to than only update to 2.2 Froyo without adding any fancy Roms but it failed to do so.
Thats when I read it could only be flashed forward if its DK28. Im suck now and cant get back to DK28. Ive tried Odin again with the SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-Rel.Tar.MD5, and sometimes removing the .MD5 part.. but odin still gives me errors. ive been at this for the last 9 hours and could use some help, guidance and actual Links that are not broken or have a 404 error on them.
-
Problem: Cannot use Odin to get back to DK28 and is stuck on DG27
Solution I want: To be able to take my crappy Samsung Epic and make it Epic with Froyo 2.2 so I can one click root it, installing Flash and Hulu.
-
Thank you all!
You may want to Odin to DI18,and then going to EB13 either by an update.zip,or Samsungs tool, mini kies if I remeber right.Or you can try one of the current FROYO ROMs,EB13 based.
Sent from my MyFrankenstein E=Bee13² ROM using XDAP App...
should be able to ODIN right to EB13. look for that file and follow the steps. ODIN doesnt care about deltas etc... it writes to your phone regardless. then you can one click root and rock your custom ROM to get hulu going.
That would be nice.. but EB13 and DI18 I cannot find.. I have been looking for them and have come up with nothing. I have searched and most of the links are the stupid Gator link with 404page error.. Also the Stock roms are just impossible to find.. Im a hammer stroke away from caliming my phone was dropped and just getting a new one. I hae tried Odin3+V1.61 with Victory PIT and SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.MD5 and without the MD5 and continue to get an error....
Please, Links and tutorials will be greatly helpful.
NVM. I found it. Took forever to find the right TARs and what not.. now I have to find a way to go from DI18 to DK28.. OTA update doesnt seem to work.. and warning out there, ViperTrinity Rom is slow and laggy.. Trying to watch Hulu is unwatchable and also a simple app like Tom the Talking Cat does not work well.. Laggy as a mother!
Why dk28? You should just go to eb13 anyway, laggy buggy issues are at least somewhat if not entirely because of dk28, it was a very buggy leak. Now that eb13 is out go to that, throw on a custom kernel if nothing else and you should be in much better shape.
I believe ptfdmedic's newest midnight rom has flashable zips to restore whatever stock sprint apps you might want. Ill see if I can find you links to all you'd need.
Edit: you should be able to use this and odin strait to eb13 froyo stock pre-rooted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Still looking to see where it was that I found the sprint apps flashable zip that could be used if you went to a custom rom but wanted nav back.
Edit2: ptfdmedic does have a sprint apps edify zip on his site http://lostandtired.com/ under the android development section which I assume these work with EB13 if you were to go to a custom rom with them removed.
The ROM that I was actually thinking of was ecooce's new frankenstein rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982415 He has zips with all the removed apps so you can add back what you need.

[Q] Why doesn't SetupWizard.apk fire up for me anymore?

I've apparently done something to my Epic and I can't figure out how to reverse it. Probably because I don't know what I did and/or when.
Since I got my Epic, every time I first boot it up after installing a ROM (whether it is custom or going back to a stock image), the Setup Wizard fires up, asks the usual questions, gets my google account info, and then automatically syncs my contacts and apps I've downloaded for the market. I've read plenty of posts where folks don't like this and will cancel the process so they can do it manually. Personally, I like that feature but it no longer works no matter what ROM I flash.
I first noticed it when I was on ViperRom 4.0.4. I wanted to upgrade to ViperRom 5, the newest release, and since I was on DK28 based rom, I wanted to first flash the stock EB13. It all went smooth as silk but when EB13 started for the first time, the Wizard didn't start asking me setup the phone for the first time. It just went straight to the stock launcher (TouchWiz I assume). And yes, I did all the custommary wiping of the 3 finger salute before I started. Bottom line, I just took mental note of it but moved on because EB13 was just a stepping stone for what I wanted to do. So, 3-finger salute, lotsa wiping, then flashed Synergy (ViperRom 5.0). Again, absolutely no problems. But again, the Setup Wizard didn't fire up. Hmmm...
So, I re-wipe, re-flash, and still no wizard. Grrrr... Since then, every rom I've installed/flashed has not once had the Setup Wizard fire up! WTH??? LOL. At the moment, I've Odined back to DI18 (just for the hell of it mainly). So I'm on DI18, RFS, not rooted, just like it came out of the box....no wizard?
What did I do? How do I re-enable the SetupWizard.apk (assuming that's what it is). I know the file is there in system/app because with every rom, I could use astro or root explorer and see that it is where it belongs. Of, course if I try to run it from one of the explorer apps, I get an error message, but doing a full wipe/restore to DI18 should have let the apk run, right? Have the permissions been altered to not let it run? Is this something I can correct with ADB?
Any help would be most appreciated and welcome.
The rom dev needs to enable it. It has been disabled by them
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Yep the ROM devs have to enable it. Otherwise whenever you go to Market or GMail for the first time it will ask you to enter your Google information, (the Android Setup Wizard kicks in...)
I had thought that might be the case, but if they disable it, is it disabled forever?
When I installed ViperRom 4.0.4 (Trinity I believe, the last of their DK28 based roms), it was there and working. The wizard fired up after the first bootup of Trinity and everything went as normal as can be. I used Trinity, and only Trinity, until version 5 (Synergy) was released. I didn't flash/odin a single rom the entire time I was on 4.0.4 as it met all my needs. EB13 was released during this period but I resisted the temptation to try it figuring I'd wait until TPhillips released his next ROM (excellent job btw). So, the next thing I finally flashed (actually it was Odin) was EB13 since the dev's instructions said to be on EB13 before flashing Synergy (ViperRom 5.0). THAT is when it happened. When EB13 fired up for the very first time, no SetupWizard! But it was there for the previous ROM (ViperRom's Trinity 4.0.4) and gone when I went to EB13 a month or so later. So, by that reasoning, it was disabled in EB13 because that is the first time it didn't fire up. And, it hasn't fired up since. I've flashed 3 or 4 times since then, as recently as this morning when I Odined back to DI18, but the last time I saw the SetupWizard was when I installed Trinity (a month and a half ago I guess). I could understand custom rom dev's disabling it, but this happened when I Odined a stock EB13. I can't see Samsung and/or Sprint disabling it. And I know it was there on DI18, but it didn't fire off this morning.
Somewhere, I must have goofed something up, and I do believe I need to change a permission setting somewhere (the file is where it belongs), I'm just not sure what to do or even why it happened. When I odined the stock DI18, i would have thought that would reset every setting/permission/flag there was...but it didn't! So, I have to wonder is there anything else not properly "permissioned" since whatever this is has "stuck" through maybe half a dozen flashes & odin's...plus it started when I flashed a stock recovery.
To me atleast, this is really weird!?!
Thanks for the replies, I thanked you both. But, any other ideas?

And for the record, I do know that when I go to the Market or Gmail the first time, I get to enter all my info and everything is fine. But, the ONLY time (that I know of anyway) that all of my previous apps (like 75 of them give or take) will automatically download and install is if I get that setup wizard to fire the very first time the phone starts up after a fresh install. If one cancels (or in my case doesn't get to do it), then I have to go to the market and install the stuff myself. Of course, I have both TitaniumBackup (pro version, I lbelieve in supporting the devs) and MyBackupRoot, so it's not like I'm screwed or anything, I just "LIKE" for it to be all automated...it just feels fresh that way! LOL.
This isn't like a huge problem, I'm just more curious as to what happened than anything else and wondering why odining back to stock (either DI18, DK28, or EB13) doesn't reset things to make this work like it should...
Samsung has it disabled. its been disabled since the phones release. Some devs enabled it for there custom roms for some time.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Well, that makes a lot more sense then. Because it was EB13 that was the first time I didn't see it. Just out of curiousity, what would I need to modify to make it work in a rom, or am I just pissing in the wind. For example, can I modify something in a rom (lets say Synergy from Team Viper since thats what I'm using at the moment), perhaps in ADB, before I flash it so that the apk fires up to start. Or, can I take the .apk's of my favorite apps and "drop" them in the rom (I know not to extract a rom from the zip file then re-zip it after making changes) so that they install with the rom when I flash it, like a ViperRom or Syndicate. They would go in the data/app folder, right? Or, just quit my *****ing and deal with it? LOL.
Really, mystery, thanks for your time...
Your just pissing in the wind so why don't you just stfu .
I'm not sure how to enable. I think its something in the build.prop. Your gonna have to ask a rom dev to get a def awnser.
As far as adding your own apps you can just add them to the data/app and they will automatically install when you flash the rom.
If your worried about your apps you can always try syndicate or bonsia. There script backs up the user apps then wipes everything. Once the rom installs it automatically restores your apps and phone to where it was before flashing.
Your welcome
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
SetupWizard was only one part of the process. They removed GoogleBackupTransport (the other part) in EB13. Even if you enable the SetUp Wizard in the build.prop, it won't restore any apps other than the ones you purchased. The googlebackuptransport.apk from DK28 is not compatible with EB13/EC05.

LOL! Damn, I can't remember the last time I was b^tch slapped like that! Damn, that's what u get for thanking a guy (or gal) twice in one day!
OK, so I hit the brakes on the SetupWizard and dropped a pile of APK's that I like in the data/app folder. I had read before that one could do that with zip's flashed in CWM. Actually what I read talked about taking stuff out if you didn't want it (like when all the Sprint and/or Samsung apps were rolled into one big zip to flash, the OP had said just take out anything you didn't want), so I had figured the reverse was true and I could drop apk's in. I just wasn't sure about a ROM. Anyway, it worked perfect...
Oh, and Mystery...bite me!
Glad it worked for you and I have been some assistance.
I gladly will

You know I asked this question many of times to a few devs and everyone just said change the build.prop from DISABLED to OPTIONAL for SetupWizard. Which I did and I went as far as to decompile the setupwizard.apk to see that the coding was still there for the backup and restore but for the life of me I couldn't get it to function.
You are the first to come up with a different response saying the googlebackuptransport.apk, which makes perfect sense. Why nobody has ever taken the second to explain that further than the build.prop response I have no idea.
Thanks, at least my endless wondering of what happened between DK28 and EB13 now has a answer.

[Q] Leaving Stock

Ok, so I've decided to pop my cherry and go to custom ROMs. I'm going to try Blazer first. I'm currently on Stock EK02 everything from the OTA. I rooted using Auto Root. No problems before or after rooting. Needed some advice on the order of operations. I'm thinking of allowing the EL29 OTA update to take place to update the modem and kernel. I'm assuming that the OTA will go through even though I'm rooted. Then, I was going to to flash Blazer. Are the Stock EL29 modem and kernel a good match for Blazer or is there a generally accepted better combination? I was thinking that Stock modem and kernel might be better optimized and tested by Sprint to work better on the network. Thanks!
U can download blazer it has a kernel with the ROM....all you have to do is flash the modem and then the ROM and your good no need to do the update and then have to root again and install clockwork which if you already have then will cause the update to fail....just more steps that can get messed up if you don't read
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
The ota won't work. Manually flash the modem with cwm. I like the gunslinger kernel. The odex a deodexed cwm flash script improves performance also.
My personal setup is cal's 2.8.1 with gunslinger kernel and the odex script. I also am using a gingerbread launcher. I also went in and disabled the unneeded apks in /system/apps. I am running the EL26 modem because the phone was pissing me off while using streaming radio. It would fall back to 1x and not come back out. Oh yeah, I also did the tweaks for 4g quicker locking and connect with lower signal. On the 3g side, I zeroed out the multimedia addresses and proxies. I'm not over clocked. That may not be the best setup for everyone but its working good for me so far.
Thanks guys. I'm now thinking that since my call quality doesn't have any problems, I might just leave the modem as is on EK02. I'll just flash Blazer with the included kernel. Having EK02 modem won't cause a conflict right? Having not done this before, I should install CWM, then from CWM install "Calkulin's Format All" then install "Blazer". Do I need to reboot or clear any caches in between those two?
Going to test out Blazer for a bit and then Calk's and see which one I like better. Thanks.

Hey Frank, once you have CWM installed make sure to do a BACKUP before you go flashing other roms. Trust me that this is a very important step! Also, since you are already rooted I would advise making a backup of your apps via Titanium Backup? This is not required but useful for restoring apps when flashing ROMs. In answer to your other question, it is not necessary to use Calk's format all, but is recommended. Otherwise, just use CWM to wipe data, cache, and dalvik-cache. Then choose install zip from sd card and flash away.
Calks format all will clear all caches for you... Make sure to go thank the man

I was just in your shoes recently. I was on stock EK02 + root. Decided to use blazerROM as my choice of ROM. I didn't get the OTA update yet, so I went ahead and ODIN the pre-rooted EL29 stock update. I just wanted to see if EL29 had any issues. I ran it for half a day and decided to stick with it. I backed up my contacts and SMS messages and Titanium backup of all my apps. I added CWM via the auto-root script from sfhub. From there, I made a nandroid back up (it saves to your external SD if you have one) and went ahead and flashed calks format all. then flashed blazer right after (stayed in the same menu). Everything is running great so far with no major issues. Once everything was running properly, I just restored my user apps (not system!) via titanium backup, my SMS messages, and contact list.
I also did the same steps for my wife's phone, but put calks rom on hers.
You won't regret flashing. Better battery life, more features, bloatware removed, ect. I don't think i'll be on stock anymore since we get the updates here on XDA faster than sprint pushes them out anyway.

Thanks. I saw another one of your posts and was going to ask you to compare Blazer and Calks but I didn't want to be that guy! I'm just going to try them myself. That said, did you update your modem to EL29 before you moved to Blazer? I'm thinking of keeping EK02 since it works well for me and I've seen others say EL29 had problems.
@jasone4gt Thanks for the reminder on the back up. I've installed CWM, done the back up. Getting ready to flash Blazer now.

Thanks everyone. Took the plunge and everything is great. Didn't update the modem. Installed CWM, did Nandroid and Titanium backups, flashed Calk's Erase All then flashed Blazer. Everything works great so far. It all looks great too. One minor thing. The signal strength indicator is grey color instead of blue like everything else. It's also blue in the screen cap in the second post. Is it supposed to be grey and do I have to flash a theme? Also, does anyone know what the screen density is? It looks a lot better than Stock.

It's actually pretty easy. Just follow the instructions in the first thread in development to Auto root. Do step 1, download the e4gtauto-sfx.exe file and then run that. Select A to Root then C to install CWM. I'm not sure if you need to reboot your phone between A & C but to be safe, you might want to. Download the Blazer ROM and Calk's Erase All and copy that to your phone. Then boot into CWM by holding Up volume and Power while turning the phone on. Do the Nandroid back up in CWM. Then install Calk's then Blazer. That's it. You're done. There are a bunch of videos to help if you need it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268548
It depends on what version he's on.
EL13 and up, he'll have to use the Odin package, also by sfhub. Then he would use the package you mentioned to run option C for CWM

Yup, I thought I mentioned that in my post but getting old I guess. If you're on EK02 or earlier, then you follow my instructions. If you're on EL13 or later, you have to do Odin. I don't know how to do that though since I've never done it as I was on EK02.
Ok, run into a little problem. The hotspot hack worked fine right after flashing Blazer. I then did my restore from Titanium back up. Since that, the hot spot doesn't work. It says I'm not authorized. Did I restore something that undid the hack and is there a way to fix it besides doing a reset? Also, my signal strength indicator varied between grey and blue. Is that normal? And what is AOSP email? I installed it but it doesn't look any different than the Stock email. Thanks.

Well, don't know if anyone cares but here are my thoughts on my experience. First off, I think Blazer looks a lot nicer than stock. I suppose you have to like blue. I still have no idea why but my signal strength indicator occasionally turns white. I think it's when either 4G or Wifi is on but it's minor. Sprint tethering works with both 4G and 3G. It seems like 4G disconnects every once in awhile. Sometimes it's the 4G (meaning Internet on the phone doesn't work either) and sometimes the PC hooked up loses Internet access. I mentioned in another thread, the tethering worked right after flashing but after I did a Titanium restore, it stopped working and I got an authorization error. Turns out turning off and on fixed that. I found out after reflashing that you can avoid this problem if you don't restore the data for Wifi Sharing and Wifi Sharing Manager apps. No problems with GPS (used maps and nav) or any other connectivity. Before reflashing, I tried out Madoggin's 13 homescreen from 12/4. I didn't use it long but it seemed to work fine. I just didn't like it because it installs a different theme (didn't like the notification icons) and it replaces the scrolling toggles on the status bar. In case you haven't discovered it, I found out that holding the toggles in Blazer will open up the settings page for that item, e.g. tap Wifi turns it on and off but hold Wifi and it'll open up Wifi settings. I still have no idea what AOSP email is. I installed it and it looked exactly like Stock. After reflashing, I didn't install AOSP email and it still didn't look any different. I guess the difference could be the notification because the one that comes with Blazer has a different envelope icon for new emails. Performance-wise, I haven't noticed anything really different. I thought Stock was a really smooth experience and Blazer seems no better or worse. Battery-wise, I have one data point. I have really bad signal at my office and I would lose 10% battery for every hour on Stock but with Blazer it was half that. Last thing which isn't related to Blazer per se but I had been looking forever for a music player widget. There was another post that mentioned that there is an app in the market called Galaxy S Music Widget that gives you the widget to control the default music player and it is awesome. I also tried Music Mod which I used with my old Streak. It seemed to work ok even though it says it's for Froyo only but it is a separate music player and doesn't work with the Samsung widget thingys on the lockscreen and the notification area. The upside is that it has a lot of different sized widgets. Hope that helps someone. In summary, Blazer's very cool and works great.

Receiving SMS/MMS Issues....

All of a sudden, across different ROMS and even in stock/rooted, even with Google voice, my phone isn't receiving any texts. No notifications, nothing. I can see them if I open G-Voice in the inbox, but not if I open Messaging or Go SMS, but this started before I even installed G-Voice. Before that, nothing.
It started yesterday. Anyone else having this problem?? Is Sprint having issues or something?

Looks like reflashing the radios worked. AS soon as I got booted into stock, a ton of messages started coming in
ok, so how does one go about reflashing the radios? did you do that and follow through with the nandroiding back to stock like you said?
I'm sorry. I have an HTC Evo 4g, rooted, originally had CM7 on it when the sms issue happened. took it to my friend and he put CM9 on it to see if going to a newer ROM would help. it didn't. he stated that I would probably have to go back to stock, reinstall sms from there (?) and then go back to a rom if I wanted.
I have been googling the issue and found this: forum.xda-developers. com/showthread.php?p=34337380#post34337380 which had directions to unroot and go back to Froyo, then reroot and reinstall the CM7 ROM. If I don't have to go through all that I would love not to, and this thread is much newer than that one.
also: I don't think I have a copy of my original HTC Sense or whatever base setup. not sure if the guy who rooted my phone for me saved one... also, don't think I have a copy of the CM7 I had installed. I do however have a .exe of the CM9 I currently have. Honestly, I like some of the settings on CM7 more than the CM9 I have, but oh well, I guess.
Anyway, sorry to ramble. I have had this issue not receiving text messages randomly since about November 9th. I am on a Sprint Evo but it is flashed to Cricket.
Thank you for the help! I am learning a lot as I have been looking all this up, but more info would definitely help.

EDIT: Ok, updated the Radios with CM-EVO_Radio-2.15.00.12.19_PRI-2.33_WiMax_NV.zip. I did not nandroid into the stock rom though because I don't think I have it saved. I've found a few apparently-stock roms on xda but I read something else that said what looks like stock could just be another rom and not have all of the original settings refreshed. I am pretty sure that when I had CM9 put on my phone to try to fix the sms issue they did a clean wipe before they installed it, but I could be wrong.
I still have not received any of my still-missing texts. =( I can still send which makes me think it isn't necessarily that I'm flashed to cricket... any other help would be most welcome. thanks.

I just reflashed my radios and now I'm nandroiding back to stock/rooted to update Profile and PRL....
Hope that does it
EDIT
Looks like reflashing the radios worked. AS soon as I got booted into stock, a ton of messages started coming in

ok, so how does one go about reflashing the radios? did you do that and follow through with the nandroiding back to stock like you said?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200261..that thread should help you. It's stock rooted gingerbread with radio updates. Sorry if thats not what your looking for.
Are there in apps in existence that will restore a phone's proper mms/sms setting after being flashed?

[Q] Could somebody explain this?

I'm stock rooted with something like 110 apps frozen with TB. I had not upgraded to MA6 simply because I didn't feel like going through the brain damage of re-freezing the 110 apps. Freezing that many apps for all intents and purposes gave me a custom ROM based on how I use the phone. Many of the apps were replaced with apps from the Google store that I liked much better than what Samsung and Sprint thought I needed and worked for me. BTW, Touch Wiz is gone, replaced with a third party launcher.
Anyway, I got the upgrade notification this morning and my inference from this thread was that if I let it try to upgrade and fail that I wouldn't get the nag about the upgrade. I had read the instructions regarding Freeza's modified MA6 for rooted phones and had even downloaded the zip file. To make a long story short, CMW 6.0.2.3 asked a couple of questions one of which was did I want to keep root? I answered yes to both and lo and behold I'm now on JB 4.1.2 and MB1. Why was I able to apply the OTA update to a rooted phone? I did not wipe cache or Dalvik cache. Everything seems to be normal and I'm sitting here asking, "What happened?" Everything that I've read says this wasn't supposed to happen.
Additionally, does anybody know what the Sprint Hotspot file name is? I have TrevE's Mod. Does it need the Sprint app to work?
If on stock recovery the OTA will go through. You could have also just installed the modem from the ROM. It also sounds like you might prefer CyanogenMod since you have everything frozen and have a launcher running.

The thing is, no one really knows why this happens. For some the OTA flashed fine with a custom recovery installed (like for you), but then for many others as well, it failed with a status 7 error. I have no idea myself why this would happen, you would think that there would be something in common among those who failed to apply it or among those who were successful, but it doesnt seem like theres anything in the overlap region, which is really strange. People were able to flash it while on stock rooted with custom recovery, others who were on stock rooted with stock recovery had to ODIN back to pure stock to apply. So like you can see, its just a really strange fluke it seems, and I dont think anyone really knows the answer
