[Q] How do I MOD a piece of an exsisting ROM? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm wondering if someone could help me with a MOD'ing question/request. I am running the Sprint Lovers ROM (which I just love) but there is one thing that I'd like to change...
This ROM is pretty much stock, aside from a few changes (very good ones actually), but I just can't stand the layout for the launcher/dock bar. Basically, I want to remap the buttons from APP DRAWER/PHONE/ADD+ to PHONE/APP DRAWER/MESSAGES.
There is an .apk based on the LauncherPro home replacement app which allows the user to do exactly what I'm wanting to do; however, I want the changes to be made at a permanent level (and I really like the page slider thing that slides smoothly over the hump as opposed to the one from the LauncherPro version). I don't want to use a home replacement app.
I've seen some MOD's that allow the user to flash a file which will make similar changes but the MOD's I've found do not match exactly what I'm looking to do - so I'm curious to know how I can go about getting the desired results with as little pain as possible, lol.
**update** Would it be possible to extract the installed "launcher" and simply replace it with the LP SENSE UI as the built in "launcer" ?
Thanks in advance!

Rosie question

I am running SkyRaider 3.3.3. My desire is to remap Rosie so that the center button will open the root folder in App Folders rather than my usual app drawer. This is because I have a lot of applications and having folder organization in my app drawer is a necessity.
I have searched and found a lot of threads about remapping, but none that give clear, step-by-step directions as to what needs to be edited.
I am likely trying to get into a project that's way over my head, but I would love to give it a shot and noodle with it in my free time. I just don't know where to begin.
Also, I am aware that this exact modification went into Uncommon Sense, which I have used and enjoy, but I would love to be able to change ROMs at will without losing this valuable feature.
EDIT: In an effort to try to figure it out by inductive reasoning, I have looked at the logs to see what events are triggered when I press the app drawer button, as well as the action I'd like to remap to that button. I then decompiled SkyRaider's Rosie classes.dex with baksmali and started digging around. So far, I can find absolutely nothing that makes any sense, leading me to believe this project is much, much bigger than I anticipated. I did get a laugh from the "UserHappinessSignals" file (the name, at least). I almost expected to open the file and find a list of words like "smile," and "laughter."
Alas, that was the one ray of sunshine in this otherwise massive and hellish undertaking.
The saddest part of this whole thing is that this exact thing I'm trying to do has been done in another ROM (Uncommon Sense). Mapping the exact same app (I installed the same modified version from Uncommon Sense 1.1) to the exact button I'm aiming for. I know the answer exists, and might not even be that impossible, but thus far, I'm stumped. Further, I'm lead to believe that Rosie.apk isn't the only place I'll need to work; I hear also com.htc.resources?
Honestly, if anyone can help me out, I'd be much obliged. I have put forth a great deal of effort thus far, but I'm realizing that effort without guidance results in a significantly higher ratio of time wasted vs. productive time.
Bump, with clarification.
I don't need or want to change the appearance of Rosie. I just want to change the event triggered when I press it.
I feel that should be at least a bit easier than an extreme cosmetic overhaul. Still beyond me, though.

I have no idea how to change the buttons but I do know a cosmetic overhaul would be a lot easier.

Not sure if this is what ya want but look up app folder in the market
I actually already have App Folders. Now the trick is integrating it into my Rosie launcher. Which is apparently seriously difficult.
Oh well. I'll keep plugging.

I'm pretty sure I can get this working for you homie.
you need to be on a stock DEODEXED ROM. this is a must, I deodexed teh latest Nov OTA with no name completely stock deodexed. here is a link - http://www.multiupload.com/2KS0OS60DR
then what you need to do is either take uncommon sense's ROM rosie.apk or it's framework-res.apk. I think you just need the Rosie.apk, if you pull the rosie.apk from the uncommon sense rom you know has it, and make it into a flashable .zip to flash in recovery. I used this method for mynwarms rosiesettings.apk which allows you to pick the left and right rosie buttons with an easy to use app. its mad kick ass. but hit me up PM we'll get you going.
@kensikora:
The issue is that there are a couple of areas that need to be changed depending on how you want it to look.
The buttons, mapping of buttons and icons are in the Rosie APK. the App Drawer information is also in the Rosie APK (transparent, black, 4 or 5 rows). The look of the dock is in the resources (transparent, button look, traditional arc or straight line, ETC).
I am sorry if I missed this, but could you please let me know EXACTLY what you are looking for:
This is what I have currently:
Left Button - Phone
Middle Button - All Apps
Right Button - Google Voice
The dock it a traditional Rosie that is Semi transparent.
It is possible to create a flashable zip for the Rosie only that will assign your button locations BUT will take on the look of what ever ROM you flash.
EDIT: re-read 1st post. I belive I suggested you check out the EVO thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797688
if anyone can set up that center button to go where you want, he can.
The only change I really want to make is to have the center button open a modified version of App Folders instead of the usual all apps drawer, exactly how it works in Uncommon Sense.
I just really want to be able to try different ROMs instead of being tied to Uncommon Sense based solely on Rosie mods.

Standard Android Call Answer Screen...

Is it possible to get the standard android answer screen for answering a call as personally i really dislike the HTC one, all i know is its in the HTCDialer.apk
If i delete this apk then i get the standard answer screen which is ace but the phone button on the homescreen doesn't work anymore which i would quite like to keep...
Any suggestions much appreciated as im in over my depth here and not really sure what else to try...
You would need to use an alternative launcher. The phone button on the HTC Dock will be linked to the .apk you are deleting.
buggar was hoping the file could be tweaked
Quite like sense was hoping to keep that...
There are very similar docks and themes you can get for launcher pro.

[Q] Additional Mod for the Classic Rom

I have not contributed enough yet to be allowed to post in the development thread, however this is a two part development question regarding Tommy's Classic Rom.
I know that changing how many home pages you have and the order of the pages is handled by a launcher mod. I typically use GoLauncher. I was wondering if that capability was something that could be worked into the CCP? I am a minimalist, and I use swypepad, so I only need one home page. I would like to be able to remove the extra empty pages that I don't use.
I like the ability to have a "dock" or row of items (widget or app) along the bottom of the screen/side of the screen if tilted. If this is a mod that could be included as well that would be great.
I love all the options you have built in and adding thest two options, in my opinion would make your rom complete. I am really looking forward to the SuperMagic!!
Thanks for any feedback. I have thoroughly enjoyed the classic rom and have been using each new version as they come out since the very beginning.
Thanks Tommy and Dread for all your hard work.
edit--- I also make use of a GoLauncher feature called gestures. I can gesture down and cause an action to occur and I can gesture up and cause a completely different gesture to occur. Gesturing on the home screen. That would be a cool option to have available too.
Thanks!

Most of what you just asked about, requires editing the lines in the default.xml file,if anyone can make this a mod,it would definitely be Tommy.
Thanks
Thanks for that information. I was wondering if you or someone could point my questions Tommy's way? I was wondering what his thoughts are on adding or not adding those items to his rom. I figure he has reasons for what he does and I am the curious type always trying to learn.

Launcher Questions

Not specific to this phone, but figured I'd post here as the G Pro appears to be my next phone (and my first android device). So, I have no experience to rely upon for answers.
I'm familiar with iPhones and jailbreaking them and unlocking, but I'm a total newbie with everything Android! I'm curious as to how much an aftermarket launcher takes over your phone. For example, with an jailbroken iPhone, if I was tired of having the default 16 apps on a screen, I could install Iconoclasm or something similar and it would allow me to change the amount of apps on the screen to pretty much any amount I wanted. Iconoclasm would only change that one parameter and not mess with anything else.
When you install a new launcher, can you have it just change one small thing, or do they change a whole host of items all at once? Basically is it an all or nothing change, or can you have it change one and only one thing if that's what you desire?
If I understand correctly, TouchWiz, Sense and Optimus are launchers (or user interfaces) that are placed on top of plain android. If I were to install a new launcher, would that get rid of the built-in features of Optimus such as the Quick Button and Q-Slide, or would those Optimus features that the hardware/software needs still remain?
I'm just trying to figure out...if I wanted to customize some items, would it screw up some of the others that I want to remain factory stock.
TouchWiz, Sense, Blur or any of the other manufacturer skins are integrated into the whole experience of the Android OS. Some manufacturers integrate their changes much more deeply than otheres. In my opinion, LG was lighter on the tweaks than many of the others. Installing a launcher will generally change your home screen and application drawer, but does not change other manufacturer integrations. For example, installing another launcher will not change how the system settings menu is displayed in anyway. The launchers will allow you to change the animations from screen to screen, how many columns and rows you have on your home screens or app drawers, etc. (depending on which launcher you decided to use as they all have slightly different options as far as what you can tweak).
The best part about it though is that if you install it and don't like it, uninstall it and try another. I would just recommend trying out their free versions to figure out what you like before you decide to go and buy the premium versions.

trying new and different launchers won't screw anything up. you also have factory reset to fall back on.
I'm currently using Nova Prime, and all of the built-in apps (like QuickMemo) work just fine. Remember that when you install a new Launcher, your old one doesn't go anywhere, so you can switch back and forth.
Try Nova, Apex and a few others, then buy the paid version of the one you like.

Im currently using ADW EX. Works like a charm. Just like nova you can spend hours setting it up to your like and chose over thousands of themes. The sky is the limit on android.

[Q] Stock rom gesture&dock modification

Hi everyone!
I'm new and i wanted to ask some question. I've been using my new LG G3 for about 2 weeks and I really dont like the few customizability of the stock rom.
Before we start I'd like to point that... Yes, I've already asked Google.
I was wondering if there is a way ON THE STOCK ROM, with root access , without using Themer or Buzz launcher or Nova or whatever, to:
Customize gestures: I'd like to open the menu with a swipe up (I've heard that this thing is something that has to do with kernel, but I'm not sure)
Customize the menu: I'd like to have a scroll down menu, rather than the grid one.
Hide the dock and the touch buttons. I simply don't fancy the menu down, I'd like to have a full screen usable, rather than 75% (I dont like pinching out every time)
I'd like to do all this without using custom launchers or installing apps. In case this would not be possible can i ask for suggestions to do this things again without custom launchers? (I know some apps btw, I would like to do all this with AS FEW as possible)
I am sorry if it was pretty pedantic and kinda cocky, but I am still wondering why they make such an horrible stock rom... I mean... Customizability 0 (the answer is obvious: otherwise we wouldnt need the custom roms xD)
Sorry for bad english
Thanks to all!!! :3
Custom Gestures: Nova would be able to do that. Not available on stock launcher.
Menu: (Assuming you mean app drawer) Nova has that option, I don't think stock does.
Hide Dock: Again, Nova can do this while on the home screen. For other apps, AFAIK Xposed has an addon that can do that, but CM (And other ROMs) totally can do that all the time.
I know you don't want to do Nova, but it'll solve at least some of your problems. Also, it should help any lag you may have.
