I rooted my defy firware 2.1 and now it keeps rebooting everytime I run an app which uses gps.
Help please.

Does this also happen if you turn the *data* connections off?
The Defy 2.1 firmware has a known bug that will cause it to reboot if:
- The Signal is weak
- AND it tries to do data transfer at the same time.
So GPS itself might not be the problem, but the application (like google maps) doing data transfer while you are in a spot with a bad mobile signal.
This bug can be *really* annoying (in fact: I had my defy reboot twice within the first hour) and people suggest to install 'Shutupbatterysaver' to fix the problem (See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=956659).
Another way to fix it is to upgrade to one of the 2.2 SBFs (that's what i did). I'm running the -155 ROM and it has been much more stabler than the 2.1-stock version.
Thanks for your help.

that seems to be the problem: defy does not reboot when data is off when I am using gps.
I tried shutupbatterysaver but it does not solve issue.
is there any other solution without upgrading rom?
thx.

aa trivial question:is it related to the fact that the defy being rooted?
if so can I unrooted for now as temporary fix?

Is there a program called "gps status" installed on your phone? I'm curious because I've seen a lot of people mention gps problems and also mention that app at the same time.
I used that app to use tools reset then reboot and that did not work

You can try this to see if it works.
1. Uninstall GPS Status
2. On your phone, go to Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All>Maps and then click on Clear data
3. Reboot into Clockworkmod recovery
4. Clear cache and Dalvik Cache
5. Reboot
6. Start Maps first before anything else.
Hope that works for you!

There are known issues with CM7, namely GPS issues; everyone is at a bit of a loss as to the actual cause which is causing the delay in fixing.
Your best option, if you need GPS, is to use a stable ROM and not an RC or nightly (as CM7 is); RCs and nightlies are known to have issues, they are released by the devs in order for the more tech savvy users to help them find bugs.

This. And OP you should go check out the nightly thread for CM7 and post there. There is a good 2 pages of discussion per nightly on JUST the GPS issues everyone is having lol. You'll get more precise answers and help there.
I am now using Ginger Villain 1.5 ROM and my GPS lock comes in seconds., Thank you so much for everyone who helped me find a solution. This is a very big relief to me. Thanks again!!
For some reason, no matter which roms I use the Navigation doesn't seem to work though. I've tried MIUI, Virtuous, CM7, and I even reverted back to stock rom I backed up and the navigation never seems to detect my gps. In maps, the GPS locks my location fine, but turn by turn direction doesn't seem to work.
Could someone maybe point me in the right direction?

Are you sure you are using GPS in maps and not your WIFI (which is mapped by google...) to position yourself?
Turn WIFI off, get outside in the middle of your garden and then start maps. Does it position you to the spot or does it stay inaccurate? If it's the latter, your GPS never (?) worked and you got positioned by the location of your WIFI.
What is your radio version (26.0x.xx.xx) and which ROM are you on exactly?
GPS fix? Try flashing radio.
Had the exact same issue, found that all my GPS issues were tied to radio. Flash back to most recent stock version and see if that fixes it. Worked right away for me, regardless of GPS Status, cache cleansing, etc. YMMV

Using my HSPA network (no wifi) and Google Maps "My Location", the accuracy is 600 meters. I'm not sure if that's considered working, but the most frustrating part is that Navigation always just says Searching for GPS. I started off from stock radio radio rom post OTA, then tried to flash:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959488
People said it helped, but tt didn't. Now I'm back on the one listed as "Vision_RADIO_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809.
Rom is currently QND MIUI 1.3.5 version 1.3. But liked I said, none of the roms seems to be working. Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: I just realized what you meant. I turned off the "Use Wireless Network Feature" and my GPS DOESN'T work! Any way to fix this???

Flashed latest radio and got instant GPS lock (8 satellites) on CM7 nightly #15. Didn't work before with shipping radio.
Latest radio I'm using btw is 12.28h.60.140f_26.06.02.27
Also, ymmv, I've heard some people saying they got big battery drains going to the latest radio, and also some had the same result going to the AUS radio (which apparently has good service).
@symbolism: Ugh, I have no idea about MIUI, but the latest radio does/should fix GPS problems on the latest CM7 nightlies. Anyone else experiencing the same on MIUI in any of the MIUI threads...?
@martonikaj: the AUS radio *is* the latest radio It's the 26.06.something... And I'm one of those experiencing excessive battery drain. It seems to be the connection to the network (Network standby) which sucks my battery empty...

So after flashing Incredibly Re-engineered 2.2, my GPS hasn't been able to lock onto my current location. I haven't worried about it too much until now because I'm going on a roadtrip and I'll need my GPS. Is anyone else's rom unable to lock onto their location also or is it just mine? Does anyone know any solutions? I hope I can fix this soon cause I don't want to get lost driving!

Welp
I know nothing of reengineered (I prefer Magnolia) but GPS is radio based. While flashing a Radio is second only to flashing HBoot in terms of being super dangerous (=brick), you may want to find the 7.28 radio (=stock) and flash it (it should be flashed through HBoot).
Oh and to forestall the people who WRONGLY claim flashing the same radio twice will brick your phone; that was a 1 time thing for a radio update which was issued by unrEVOked as a patch. Flashing a full radio is different (but, again, dangerous in its own right).
Good luck

go to the market and download gps status. go to menu>tools and there is a switch to clear the gps data. once i did this and rebooted my gps has been rock solid.
I downloaded the GPS status and there isn't anything that says clear GPS
---edit: so I cleared the data but it still wont lock onto my location. I can get turn by turn directions but it wont lock onto me still.---

This normally happen first time after flashing new ROMs. Now my LeeDrOid v2.2.3 found about 7-8 satellites but still get a slow fix. Wonder why too.
Did you change the gps.conf file under system/etc to your nearest ntp? Using FasterFix?

but, i have coredroid v 3.3 for a long time... and i was tested some radios...
even i was re-flashed an OFFICIAL RUU (installed gps test and found 5 sat!!), later
full wipes and "formats" included... and flashed again coredroid v3.3 (like my syg says)but It continues without working with this rom...
in adition i don´t now what are you talking about "faster fix".... what is this?
hing that was you
EDIT: i found faster fix in the market! i´m going to study this apk...
Meanwhile can you explain me how can i do the thing that you was said me? --"""Did you change the gps.conf file under system/etc to your nearest ntp?"""""
thank´s!!!!!
SECOND EDIT: fasterfix.apk don´t fix my problem
Hmm that's weird. ROM problem? I don't think so.
Yea.. FasterFix is an app in the market. Which relates to the gps.conf that I am talking about. Basically you have change your ntp(Network Time Protocol) to your nearest.
You have to reboot once you changed them so it will take effect. I am also having problem now getting a fast fix. Last time was fast, now so slow. Practically when I am driving, I have to stop my car and allow it to get a fix first(about 3 minutes). If I was attempting to get a fix while driving it will take minutes(maybe 10 minutes?). Sigh.
This one fixed my gps issues:

Thats what I do every 2 - 3 weeks
Remove your sim card from the phone, boot it, download GPS Status & Toolbox
go menu - tools - manage A-gps state - Reset it and then download it and place your phone on a flat surface somewhere outside your house till it gets a fix/lock
then shut down your phone, put the sim card in
and you'll notice that you'll have a way faster fix/lock after that
i hope i helped
uuppsss i wake up now!! hahaha i´m going to try all the answers and then post the results!!!
thx
There's also the possibility that the gps antenna is broken. If you place a finger on the camera flash cover and lightly press it inwards, you can get good signal and indicating that the antenna is broken.

I am CoPilot user, the way to get it to work when it seem to be playing hard is:-
Start > Mobile Network >GPS >CoPilot, it should then acquire a fix fairly quick. [turn mobile network off after it has acquired a fix]
It should then start as normal with just the GPS. [no data should be needed]
Only a tiny amount of data used in acquiring a fix.
Take Care

Yeah i am on the .2.5 update gps is working but wont shut down, but copilot gives no signal but google maps does
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Part of the glitch with the 2.50 update is that the GPS doesn't switch off and the only way to shut it down is to reboot the phone.
Out of curiosity - if you download and install GPS status from Android Market - does it get a lock?
Yeah it locks, gps is working fine but just want it off! But if i reset i lose all my apps etc and what happens if it happens again?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
The only way to get rid of the icon (I guess that is what you are talking about) is to reboot the phone - that will clear it until the next time you use the GPS.
I got rid of this problem by flashing a Custom ROM.
Is there a thread for Navigation fix for Epic 4g? I have:
SPH-D700
BASEBAND S : D 700.0.55.FC09
KERNEL 2.6.35.7
BUILD GINGERBREAD.FC09
HARDWARE D700.0.5
The Navigation app (google) will work for a few minutes but then say "GPS Signal Lost".
TeleNav has no problem finding and sticking to GPS signal, but I don't like that app at all (open other app? have to relaunch TeleNav!).
I know there was a fix several months ago but I've reset my phone for unrelated reasons and now the GPS problem is back. I can't find the threads or videos about how to fix it. I remember the fix file was something like 'gps_fix.zip' or 'gpsfix.zip'
Please help. Thanks!

Is there no need for the GPS fix with this method?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
It depends on the problem. The OP said TeleNAV worked fine. That means GPS is ok but for some reason google maps isnt able to keep access to the location function of the phone. The GPS fix flashable file is actually GPS drivers from another phone (facinate, I think) but since it isnt actually a problem with the GPS, reinstalling google apps could solve the problem.

THe GPS_fix file only corrects the problem with only connecting to 4 satellites (with it, you can connect to the max number visible). Sometimes people were having a problem with google nav because it went to 3 satellites and it would lock up. The GPS fix doesn't necessarily fix problems with GNav. So if you want to get more than 4, you would still need this.

Thanks! I ended up deleting Google Maps and reinstalling it along with flashing this GPS fix and solved 95% of my navigation problems. My phone did, however, lock up twice, once when someone called and the other at random but overall, it worked and got me from point a to b!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Some of your lockups may be related to low memory. For instance Facebook, if you use it, will always stay running, but uses about 11MB of RAM. But when you open it, Facebook uses anwhere from 30-50 MB until you force close it. You may want to clear memory when using navigation. You can use the Taskmanager if you don't have a Taskkiller or Memory Manager app.
