Cant flash recovery - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
Earlier today my phone froze. I left it alone for a few minutes to see if it would sort itself out. That didnt happen so I pulled the battery out and rebooted. After having passed the htc boot screen I got stuck on they cyanogenmod boot screen. It constantly kept rebooting but it couldnt get passed the cyanogenmod boot screen. I tried flashing a recovery image with cwm but that didnt work as I got an error that said
"Error while erasing boot image!" followed by
E:Cant mount /cache/recovery/command
E:cant mount /cache/recovery/ log
E:cant open /cache/ recovery/log
E:cant mount /cache/recovery/ last_log
E:cant open /cache/recovery/ last_log
Tried wiping data and cache and installing the newest version of cm7 through a zip and now I cant get passed the htc boot screen.
I was running the cyanogen 7 RC4 mod and did a perm root using the gfree method.

As far as I know, no one has found a solution or the cause. I have to assume it has something to do with CM.
Every story I've heard, people were running CM7. And they've all been G2s.
I'm personally just going to have to get a replacement through my insurance for $130. Or if I can find a good deal on a Nexus One on ebay, I'd love to do that.
Yea people been having this issue lately. I guess am not even going to flash any other rom right now, untill somebody finds out what's wrong. Really scary stuff. Another thing I saw with the people getting issue is the use gfree method. Well not saying that can be the caused. I hope someone finds a way to fix this.

Its because you did something wrong..I have a US G2 and never had this issue nor has it started

You haven't seen any DZs affected by this issue?

Did what wrong? It could be but I doubt it since it was running smoothly up until it froze on me.

Same as Don said. Phone was perfect until it randomly froze.

This happened to my DZ though
If you have Fastboot on your computer and ENG HBOOT, try this in your Terminal/command line:
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/recovery.img

Unfortunately I don't have the ENG Hboot. I hope someone figures out a solution soon. I hate my old sidekick -____-
Revert back to full stock and then reroot using gfree.
I thought about trying that before tried doing that by holding the down volume button and then the power button and selecting factory reset but when I select that option nothing happens. Is there some other way to revert?

Well if you can go to clockwork than the only way is ADB...

do you mean if I CANT access clockwork the only other way is ADB? Because I can access it im just not sure how go about revert to stock.
Well if you can actually open cwm you should be able to mount the sd card and put the stock image on your sd card, then flash it using the hboot.

Sorry I mean to say if you can't. Yea if you can't go in Clockwork then the only thing that would help is Adb(need Eng-hboot). Other than that I don't know my friend

When I try and install the new cm7 though, it installs successfully but when rebooted hangs at the htc screen

PC10IMG files are flashed through the bootloader (white screen with green skateboarding Androids on the bottom), not through recovery. If you have the PC10IMG.zip file on the root of your SD card, simply enter the bootloader (Volume Down + Power) and it should detect the file and ask if you want to flash the ROM.
In recovery, have you tried formatting the system partition as well as data and cache prior to flashing a custom ROM? Also, do you know what version of CWM you were running? Have you checked out the guide on recovering semi-bricks in the dev section? Since you have ADB working, it has some instructions on flashing recovery and such through ADB (so you flash the latest version for example and try again).

I was disscussing the fact that i had the wrong hboot. i was using the one designed for the G2 and I have a DZ. So I decided to change to the correct one, I'm comfortable with ADB so I did not for see any problems. So I flashed the correct hboot 0.84.2000, and everything looked good, rebooted in to bootloader, all good and then finally in to recovery.
Oh crap, some problem as everyone else. You know what they say if "if it ain't broke don't try to fix it". So with that in mind I thought it best to flash back to the G2 hboot. Now I didn't know ADB worked whilst you were in recovery, but it does. I followed the insrtuctions re flashed the G2 hboot and everything works as it did before.

Still stuck, no solution in sight. Cant access recovery
Ive tried flashing both types of recovery, using a few different methods. Terminal on the phone itself. Bootloader. Through Windows I use the Simpleroot and that didnt work. I get a Build RA 1.8.0 in the RA build and black screen with the Clockwork. Then if i push buttons it restarts. I cant do anything. Im stuck. Sigh. Ive tried asking for help but no one seems to answer.
Have you tried installing Rom manager? You can flash clockwork through it then use it to install ra recovery over it. That is if your rooted already.

I thought that would maybe work, it was going find (tried mac installation) and said Done. But the recovery screen came on and it was still blank/black. Nothing happens. (3.2 was down, so when it is back up I can try that.)
3.2.1 didnt work, got an error, couldnt find misc folder. am i stuck here then. no more roms for me?
PHEW God damn. Im so happy. Lol. I was able to download clockworks and flash it through the bootloader. I dont know why it wouldnt pick it up before. But now I have access again. Feels good to have control again. If you have problems with recovery, i would say getting PC36IMG.ZIP on the root and going to the bootloader will be best. I just have to get use to clockworks instead of RA!

My Gw has recently been semi bricked because I was foolish enough to flash a sense 2.1/3.0 over CM7 without flashing, I know, shame on me and don't worry the replacements on the way but this is really aggravating that no matter what online guides say to fix this I just can't seem to do, I DID successfully flash the PC10IMG.zip through hboot and everything went well but that didn't fix the bootloop. I have wiped EVERYTHING and it still loops and still displays the same error "E:Can't Open /cache/recovery/log" proceeded by "E:Can't Open /cache/recovery/last_log". I have tryed using ADB but have yet to even successfully set it up (I've hopped on the ubuntu 10.04 boat). I do have a windows if someone NEEDS me to use ADB to fix this. Any help appreciated. What pcimg did you use? And what's the phone state now? S-on? S-off hboot? Radio?

Major problems! Phone completely bricked nothing is fixing! Please help
I pulled my phone out of my pocket it and saw that it was on the HTC boot screen. It stayed like the for a while so i shut it down using Power, Volume UP&Down. I tried to boot again but was freezing at the HTC boot screen. I booted into recovery and it said it couldnt load /cach/x (command and log and last_log) Ive tried everything from flashing RUU to new HBOOTS, nothing is working. Now my laptop keeps saying a USB port is malfunctioning everytime i plug the phone in. Im two seconds away from smashing this with a sledgehammer. I was running Aeroevan's Unofficial CM10 Jelly Bean With the v12 Kernel w/ Video Drivers.

I have no idea why but my phone only shows up under fastboot devices and not adb devices. so i have no idea how to use that guide
The Inc 2 ports often go bad. Try wiggling and plugging it in not all the way. Also sometimes had to push on the cable and hold for it to recognize the USB. ________________________________ Easy as 3.1415926536
If your phone can be used via fastboot it should be able to via adb. Like CS said, It might be a bad micro-usb slot. I would try wiggling it to see if that helps. Being able to access fastboot means its not bricked, it just might be a hardware failure.

Click to collapse When i type in Fastboot device my phone shows up, but when i type in adb devices it doesnt. i set up the android sdk and assorted tools the way i always have because i use them for development in eclipse, but ive never had a problem with adb before.

If your phone isn't booting past HTC screen it won't usually show up as an adb device. Are you s-off? Have you tried the return to stock that I posted? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599767 This does not change hboot version so you shouldn't get that error but will put un-rooted stock and stock recovery back on your phone. Then you can install custom recovery, flash su bins and be ready to go again...... hopefully

Click to collapse Everything i try keeps freezing in the bootloader screen when i go to install any RUU or image file or zip including that PG32IMG thing or whatever. My phone recognizes it in fastboot but not adb. I am S-Off. I rooted the phone the day i got it 6 months ago and have flashed a new rom weekly. never had a problem like this before.

Try it Try putting a random rom on the Sd of the phone then try and get it to root ClockWork through the volume down method. Wipe and run the other Rom. try it ive been stuck before and it sounds something like this

Help - S - off not working
HI everyone, I need some help. My micro USB port went on my phone and VW sent me a replacement. I used the tacoroot temp root methond and the Revolutionary to gain s- off and flashed the newest radio etc. All seemed fine. Fastboot screen say S- off and shows newest radio, I thought great! time to root. Nope..here is what I get: first of all I have to use adb shell to boot the phone into Revolutionary/CWM recovery. It will not let me do it by holding the power and vol down button. second when I go into recovery and pick a rom to flash I get this error: E:Can't open /sdcard/xxxx_ rom.zip. makes no sense to me. Any Ideas?
You didn't receive any errors when using revolutionary? When you boot up your ROM go into settings and look under the power option and make sure fast boot is disabled. I would go through the whole process again. It sounds like something went wrong in rooting. Sent from my vivow using xda premium

[Q] Phone Stuck booting into Clockwork Recovery v5.0.2.0
Tried to root and flash a new rom. I believe the root worked however phone keeps rebooting into clockworkMod Recovery. Prior to rooting it i tried to downgrade my operating system but that didn't work. unlocked the htc bootloader and i was even able to flash clockworkMod Reocvery v6.0.1.1 touch on the phone. Still everytime that i install the rom which is cm7.1.0.1 it always reboots into CMR v5.0.2.0. I may have flashed recovery reboot onto the phone which may or may not explain what happened. i don't know. I just know that my phone is messed up and I want to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. I can bring up HBOOT and CMR 6 in addition to v5 but thats all i can bring up. Please HELP
