It seems to me to be a sensor oriented thing. In dark it lights up no problem but when in a room with light it shuts off to conserve battery? Very interesting htc.

The light sensor is in the very very top left of the screen. When you have the keyboard open and are in a well lit room you might accidentally be reaching over the light sensor, making it think it's dark again, and therefor powering up the keyboard backlight again until you move your finger. You can solve this problem by rooting and installing Cyanogenmod RC1 which gives you complete control over all your backlights.
Agree with jark99. Looks like it depends on light sensor. In the dark environment keyboard lights up every time.

Want to know what's even cooler with that light sensor? When I hold my phone to my ear, the screen goes off. When I take it away, it turns back on. That's pretty darn cool. However, yes, it's all dependent on the light sensor. I've had a few times when I wanted to light on and it didn't, but that's rare. I kinda like that when I need it on its on, but not when I don't. Every bit of battery is important when it comes to my phone, but there hasn't been a large problem with it not coming on here on this end.
This fixes Speaker LED Notifications on CM6.1 for Vision (G2).
Behavior:
If it is plugged in, the light will stay solid (charging). If a notification comes in with the screen off, it will blink green. If you turn on the screen, the charging light will come on. If you don’t acknowledge the notification, when the screen turns off it will blink green again.
When it is not plugged in, notifications will blink green only when the screen is off.

Green light/message received works! Great work!
Works great, thanks much.
Works perfect. Thanks for sharing. Greatly appreciate all of your work.
I did this in Terminal, but before I could even cd, I needed to enter SU. Probably just because I hadn't already allowed access, but yeah. Good stuff as always Pershoot
Anyone else having issues with LED still blinking even when no messages are around?? Even trackpad blinks, is that normal with rc2??

with the breathing light, yea. some event may have just happened. that happens on the nexus too sometimes (with the breathing light), and you're not quite sure what event just ocurred.
Ok, breathing light would be trackpad but still consider with the LED??? Also no events, just restarted.. still happens, normal???

it blinks when there is a notification (same as the trackpad). it does not blink when there is no notification (same as the trackpad). if you are getting blinking, then i can only assume that there is some event ocurring that it is notifying you about.
Ok, maybe there is but I cannot find any other event happening making it blink still.. :/

check your logcat.
push back the .so from the CM rom your on. do you still get the trackpad flashing?
Thanks very much for this; works as advertised.
Thanks pershoot. Working great!
Thankssss :d
Pershoot, will this work if you only have Bacon Bits installed? I have had some issues with my LED while on charge.
I have not tested this against the stock rom.
Feel free to try it.
U can always push the old one back.
Sup dudes, I have MikFroyo ROM installed (not sure if it's related to that) and my bottom buttons (home, menu, back, search) sometimes won't come on. Like even if I touch the screen or touch the buttons themselves they stay off. I've done a search around here and haven't found anyone with this specific issue - any ideas?
thanks
are you plugged in when this happens?

This happens whether plugged in or unplugged. I really think this is a program I've installed, a setting, or the ROM itself that is causing this issue.
I just installed stock mikfroyo and the same thing happens, no other programs installed.
I have also noticed this, only time it bothers me is checking my phone in the dark with it plugged in
Turns out this isn't a bug but these lights should react to how bright it is in the room. If it's dark they'll turn on, if it's well lit in the room they'll turn off. Testing with a light proves this.
I have a problem with my HTC Wildfire S.
From several days the display lightens in random intervals. Do you have any ideas what can make this happen? It just shows the lock screen for a few seconds and then again goes to stand by...
That is either broken / faulty LCD or Auto brightness. You must have a light sensor
Settings
Display
Brightness
Is the auto box ticked?
If it doesn't have an auto box then you can't turn it off unless there's a Rom for it which has the option to disable the auto brightness
Sent from my X10S v8.3 using XDA Premium
Well, do you mean it wakes from standby automatically or when you using it, it changes display brightness in some intervals?
same problem
i have same problem with CM7 Rom.
Try cleaning off the light sensor (One of the little circles to the right of the "htc" above the screen).
It seems to be quite sensitive to any sort of smears or dust over it and will cause odd behavior with the auto-brightness.

I had this issue, it turned out I had an option set to allow the phone to be woken using the volume buttons as well as the power button, and I kept touching the vol buttons by mistake, eg taking the phone out of my pocket to make a call, and it made me think the phone was waking itself up.

Today I noticed a dimly lit red light from the second dot to the left of the front camera staying continuously on even when the display is turned off. I am not mentioning about the notification light that is placed to the left side. I tried many options but it stayed dimly lit. Later I thought of restarting the device and that did turn it off. This did show up as bright red for a moment when I turned on the device which later turned off.
Any idea what made it stay continuously on?

I was having similar problem with gs3,turned out to be viber I guess...uninstall it and report again.
I don't have the viber app installed. By the way what is this led called and what is its function?
Thanks
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
If its not the proper led then it must be proximity sensor(uses infrared light to detect proximity)
Normally turns on when u get a call to turn of screen when u hold close to your face.if its not viber then it might be what's app or Skype god knows what(may be try freezing phone apps one by one and find out for yourself)
Its not a bug or anything. Its meant to stay lit this way because its a proximity sensor.
turn off smart stay and anything else you might not need and it will go away
turn this off by go - Setting>Motion> Quick Glance: untick :good:
As I said it went off by restarting. I don't have the problem now to check any solution. Just was curious to know what was it.
While it was on, it stayed on even during the call or even when the display was turned off. I did not have any motion setting enabled.
Thanks everyone for your kind replies. I will see if I get the problem again
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I noticed that too, then I realized what was causing this. It's the Quick Glance function on "Motion" that's triggering this, because while the screen is off the phone's proximity sensor checks whether or not you have your hand in front of the screen for activating Quick Glance. In order to do that, the sensor must continously stay on, hence the continous red light.
