Thread Creation Suggestion - About xda-developers.com

Instead of using [Kernal] or [MOD] or [ROM] at the beginning of thread titles in Root threads, etc. I think it could be a little easier when browsing for certain subjects if "Post Icons" are created for each of these subjects. For example, instead of being the 'arrow' I used when creating this thread, posters would have the option to select the icon that fits what they're post is about.

[Suggestion] The "charlie sheen" thread filter

I have a little suggestion that is inspired by the charlie sheen news filter that was circulating some time ago when he got fired from his sitcom. (it was a browser addon that censored every page containing his name or picture).
The idea would be to add an option in the thread tools that prevent the display of posts containing certain keywords defined by the user. This would help the reading of really long threads.
For instance I am following the speedmod kernel thread in the sgs2 forum (link in my sig) and every 3 pages or so there is someone asking about BLN support although it has been stated countless times that it is not supported. The best behaviour would be to ignore it but there is always 3-4 other users that answer it adding even more off topic to a thread that is already more than 300 pages. Simply filtering "BLN" would clean the thread of a lot of useless posts.
I am not being really serious it was just something I thought about reading the last debate about BLN on the thread this evening... But still it would be a nice addition
Sorry if this has already been suggested.

Improve Search @ New Thread Creation

I would like to suggest a possible enhancement for the forums:
Problem: When I'm creating a new thread, for example under SGSII section, I get suggestions for already existing topics from all other sections first, not from the actual subforum you are posting in. I've tried typing in a thread title from the first page of the SGSII general discussions, and it didn't suggest it. But it was right there.
Proposed solution: Modify this automated search to fetch results from the current subforums first, for the device, in which's section I am posting. Usually new posters want information for their specific device, not from all random devices he might never even heard of. This would help reduce the number of duplicate discussions and questions, which are very common in that specific subforum, but not just there.
Thanks for your time.

+1 to this, while creating my cm9 thread I had suggestions - all of em linked to the other devices' thread - would be better if it looked for the same in the device's sub-forum first

[Q] Question re forum vs. subforum, subscribed vs. participated

I am not sure if the android app (I am using the premium app) is taking a different path than the XDA website... but there are things that are different between them and it is making it very difficult and confusing to seamlessly move from the app to the website, or back.
On the app, there is a sidebar with, among other items, a line that says "Subscriptions" followed by number in parentheses. Above that line there is a line/option for "Participated" .
If you select "Subscriptions", and you will get a list of Forums and Subforums you have subscribed to. It is easy to "Subscribe" to a forum (or subforum), as the dropdown menu has an option to Subscribe.
Before continuing, this is how I see the logical breakdown of forums, subforums and threads:
Forum (example HTC ONE (or VERIZON HTC ONE if it exists)) ==>
Subforum(example: HTC ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting) ==>Thread(example: Help! I bricked my phone!!!).
In the app, when you select "Participated" you are presented with every thread in which you have added a comment.
However, on the website, when I navigate to the forum (not a subforum) and I want to "Subscribe" to it, I cannot find any way to do so on that page (the main forum page). I notice however, that if you go to one a subforums (see example above), you have the option there to subscribe to that subforum. However, like the app, I would like to have quick access to all subforums for a particular device.
I have "subscribed" to them from the mobile app, but they are not showing up once I am at my laptop... the only subscriptions that appear anywhere (without having to go to a dedicated page with subscibed threads, etc.) is in the right sidebar under the three tabs entitled "MESSAGES THREADS FORUMS." Here (for me) it shows I am subscribed to one subforum that I accidentally subscribed to 3 years ago (from the app I believe). The app too, correctly shows I am subscribed to this subforum. But there is no where on the website that shows the Forums I am subscribed—which the app does (as described above).
With the number of forums for devices growing to several hundred why is there not just a way to create a bookmark to go directly to the forum that you have already added as a subscribed forum/a favorite??? I swear I think every time I have come to this webpage I have to navigate down past 90 devices to find the forum I want (google XDA XYZ Device works, but there should be a way on the forum landing page). A way to find "bookmarked' forums. I use the work bookmark" because using the word "subscribe" with "forum" is actually confusing. You already have an option to subscribe to a thread on the website (and the app). And further, a subscription to a thread will send you email updates when there have been new comments to that thread. However, you do not need email notifications to a forum, nor even a subforum... you just need a quick way to navigate to them.
Further confusing the "thread subscription" component of "subscribing" is that now the app has "Participated" (as mentioned above) which I find helpful as no action is required; it automatically allows you to quickly find a thread where you have contributed or asked a question. But this is not available (or easily locatable) on the website....
Can we get the ability to create a favorite or a bookmark to a Forum or Subforum?
I understand that subscribing to threads still makes sense as people may want to be notified or have quick access to a thread which is being updated, but in which they have not made a comment. I think we just need to add a new category to "favorite" or "bookmark" a forum or subforum, and then have threads subscribed to, and threads in which we have participated.
I think in the past few years (and you guys would know!) more people use the app than before... So I think by modifying things as set forth above, it will allow increased usability of XDA overall. XDA has always had to manage and structure/organize a huge amount of information... and I have always found it quite difficult.. Only recently with the options have I noticed more productivity (although I cannot say for certain how "recent" these changes are....
Either way, I hope you can make the app and the site consistent... and preferably let the app's above-mentioned features lead the way.
Thank you...

Wow, that's a lot of questions!
I definitely won't be able to answer them all at once, so I will just answer the ones I can.
1. In answer to the question "Where are the Participated threads on the website?", just do [your_username's_profile] > Statistics > See all posts by [your_username]. It does essentially the same thing as Participated does in the app.
EDIT- More answers to come... when and if I have time!

[Request] Add subscribed forums to the notification menu

Please redirect if a thread already exists on this question. Did a quick search of the About XDA subforum, and didn't notice anything that directly addressed this question.
So I know that on the main User CP page http://forum.xda-developers.com/usercp.php it shows "New Subscribed Threads", a listing of subscribed threads with new posts.
And of course, you can also view these on the Subscribed Threads folder listing, too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/subscription.php?do=viewsubscription&folderid=all
Could this be added to the "notifications" dropdown at the topright of the screen? As in, the notification dropdown beside the logout button on the header. Show the # of new subscribed threads there, and link to the subscribed threads folder when clicked.
I often miss posts in my subscribed threads because it's not one of the things you get notified on in the notifications dropdown. I also don't want to have my inbox spammed, so I disabled all email notifications for subscribed forums.
@CDB-Man,
If you post your recommendations in this thread dedicated to the subject, then more often than not, your ideas will be seen by the mods and admins, considered, and then possibly implemented the way you would like.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out. I generally stick to my own subforum so don;t know the way around the other places as much. I'll copy over my post to there.

[Feature Request] Wiki Style FAQ/Knowledge Base Sidebar for ROM Releases

As the title suggests, I think it would be helpful to have a Wiki Style sidebar for any post marked as a ROM Release, instead of the current "New Posts" sidebar. I'm not sure how difficult it is to add additional features to this forum framework, but that would definitely be a helpful one. Most ROM release threads I've been a part of, often tend to see members posting the same questions about said ROM repeatedly. Often the answer is just a few pages previous (or worse, in the OP, in which case the user should just be given a box of Duplo and shown to a quiet corner). I'm thinking of a knowledge base style FAQ where any member can propose changes to the FAQ, but only the OP or their designated moderators can approve the changes. Of course, that's the most complex example, the simplest version of this would just allow the OP to specify a thread post as sticky and said post would always appear at the top of every page of posts and would contain, ostensibly, an FAQ. There are a few other versions of this idea I've been rolling around, but essentially what it boils down to is that better than 50% of most ROM release threads I've seen are rehashes of previously asked and answered questions that a simple knowledge base could greatly alleviate. Just my two pence on the issue, I just hate to see so much accumulated useful knowledge get buried. There are often lots of useful gems in most long-running threads (such as ROM releases) that even a decent search won't find (assuming you can convince a user to actually use the search first).
