problem identifying contact's phone number with/without country code - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok.. here's my problem.. i stored my contacts phone numbers without the country code... i had problems with sms or phone calls.... that i couldn't recognise them when incoming number came with country code...
so i changed all my phone numbers and added the country code... issue with sms has been resolved using handcent sms but for phone calls.. when incoming number is without country code.. it does not recognize it!!! very frustrating!!!
my old SE w700i didn't have this trivial problem

Have you tried saving the incoming call number to the contact (overwrite the existing)?
I recall having the same issue on a .... nokia smartphone. Was a mess. Until I overwrote the existing contact number with the new. Problem solved with both sms and calls.

problem sometimes incoming number comes with country code and sometimes no... i just can't save 2 numbers for each contact.. what a mess... any fix?

Sorry about reviving an old thread, but has this been fixed?
I come from Redux 1.2 ROM. With Stock Desire, was having this issue, but not with Redux. Now I went back to HTC Sense based ROMs: InsertCoin v25 and RCMixHD 1.4 and the problem is back. Now, not even Handcent can see the contact names (it could on stock Desire, where Message app failed)...
Any help on this?

i think it is htc sense doing that... i have just installed cyanogen 7 and does not seem to have this issue. is redux a sense rom? if it is not, then that's surely htc sense which is causing the issue

I think it's HTC Sense too.
Redux was a no-Sense ROM.

i was prefixer to kind of solve this issue.. just add a rule in prefixer to append your country code to each incoming phone number and match it with your contacts... this is the only workaround i have found... but if you can live without sense, go for a senseless rom like cyanogenmod 7(i am using atm) or some other roms

SMS Lost!?

Hi everybody I'm a chinese user, when using hero with original rom, I noticed my sms was "eaten" by it, because I'm using a google weather service which send me a sms everyday at about 9 oçlock, sometimes there is a message tone but nothing was found inside inbox. After switching to Madaco 2.3 , the problem is still there, I've got no idea now. Your help will be appriciated, thanks all the same.
P.S. It's not caused by software I'm using, I'm not using any software related with phone function now. I'm also using the lastest EU RADIO.
P.S. 2 Recently I start recieving messages from number "9" , with characters irrecognizable in it.

[Q] country code issue [any proper fix plz?]

have read a lot of threads about this issue
when i receive calls, there is no country code in number and some of my contacts are stored with country code included: result : Contact is not recognised
when i receive sms, country code is include in number and some of my contacts are stored without country code and result : Contact not recognised
this is the most stupid issue in android imo and i still haven't found a proper solution for that...... i don't quite understand why there isn't any proper fix (apart saving contact with 2 numbers (one with country code and one without country code) for that till now!
the next most stupid issue in android is sms ordering issue... (i still can't believe that there aren't proper fix for these 2 issues.. i use handscent sms for ordering issue... quite stupid honestly that u need a third party app for that)
It's just you. Works fine for me

i saw several threads with this problem : all threads are either without answer or there's a workaround (save 2 numbers per contact)... wanted to know if there was a clean way to fix this issue instead of saving 2 numbers per contact(pretty messy)
look how many people has this issue
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4134
no solution on google's site since ages
i am trying my luck here... maybe there's a third party app that fixes it?
No one has a solution. I have installed touchpal dialer and it identify the contacts properly when I look at the call log. Is there a way to use touchpal dialer to handle incoming call screen so that it can identify my contacts properly?
was trying to write an app to fix this issue but realised that on the android emulator, there is no such problem... is it because on my actual phone, i am on htc sense? can someone with htc sense confirm that this issue occurs only on htc sense?

Contacts names not showing up.

I've recently noticed that on my SMS messages only a contact's number shows up even tho in my contacts list the name is clearly there.
Any help is appreciated.

I have this same problem, what Rom are you on? I'm on insertcoin GB.
Am having the same problem.
I was having this issue with stock Desire, but installing Handcent showed me the contact names.
I flashed Redux ROM 1.2 and then, both Handcent and stock Message app showed contact names.
Now I flashed InsertCoin v25 (also tried RCMixHD 1.4) and the problem is back. Now, not even Handcent is showing the contact names...
I think it is because Android considers phone numbers to be 8 digits long. In my country, they are only 7 digits long. If I put a zero, for e.g. at the beginning, the contact names show up, but then I can't dial the numbers.
If I put country code, contact names show up when I receive an SMS but not when the person is calling. What an annoyance!

I don't think that is the problem. When I restart the phone, it fixes itself but shortly after the problem comes back.
Ok not the same problem as me. Maybe your phone is syncing and affecting your contacts after restart?
Someone suggested deleting draft messages and after that it works.
@325i i had that problem with that rom too, i editted the contacts to make sure the numbers were the same . Then i did a google sync and restarted and they showed up as contacts names

I've used various roms these past few days and still the same issue even with handcent too.
Everything syncs as usual thru Google. Been flashing roms of varying sorts for a year now. And first time its happened.
Sometimes the numbers come up with different dashes in-between the numbers but its never caused this issue before. Its doing my head in.

did you ever figure this out?

[Q] MS2Ginger 2.0 Lite on Defy+

I have flashed this custom ROM onto my new Defy+ as per Walter79s instructions and it is all working fine apart form a few small problems that I haven't been able to find a solution to. I have used search in both Walter79s thread with it's thousands of replies and in the defy forums search and drawn a blank in both.
1. My contacts do not seem to be synced with my SMS, instead of showing a contact it shows a number e.g. +447xxxxxxxxx instead of Boss or Wife or Mother-in-Law!!!. Quite annoying as barely anyone ever signs a text.
2. Any contact (synced from my Blackberry through google sync) who has a photo attached to their gmail account seems to have Chinese characters above their number when viewed in the dialer. Not really an issue just a funny little bug.
3. An aside to this Chinese characters is that when I first installed the ROM a few other things had these characters too. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is the calendar which had the dates both in numbers and Chinese characters. Went away after I reset the location.
Edit: 4. The SMS compose bar is tiny. Is this in anyway adjustable.
I am very new to android but Walter79s MS2Ginger installation guide and Zephyrot's All-in-One have got me through rooting annd flashing on my first custom ROM. Just hope that an ICS/CM9 stable ROM isn't too far away.
Thanks.
I have been searching high and low for this issue and it appears not to be uncommon but with out any definitive fix. I have played around with a number of things, changing all the 07s to +447s just meant that SMS contacts were recognised but callers were not. I also tried a couple of prefix apps, these did work but only showed you the caller in a 3rd party bubble not on the main display. Tried setting IP prefix to 0044 but this made no difference as I believe it is for outgoing calls only. I haven't managed to find a fix for it but there does seem to be a couple of work arounds.
1. You can double up on all your contacts e.g. have both 07123456789 and +447123456789 listed under the same contact. A right pain with so many numbers. Also tried exporting and "find and replace" 07 with +44, this lead to some interesting numbers where the 07 was in the middle!
2. Live with the prefixer app so you can see who is calling and SMS contacts. OK but not great for missed calls or call logs to clients or colleagues.
3. Live with it or go back to the original Defy+ ROM. Rather not as that MotoBlur thing got right on my wick.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Update: Using my Sherlock Holmes like powers of deduction I have managed to find the source of this problem. My contacts book only appears to be using a max of 11 digits to identify numbers. It will recognise 07xxxxxxxxx but not +447xxxxxxxxx. However if I change the number that is saved to 47xxxxxxxxx the contact is recognised. I'm going to try re-flashing the ROM to see if it's just an error that occurred during instillation. If this doesn't work I will try a different ROM.
I am wondering whether my baseband setting might have any connection to this? It is currently EPU93_U_00.60.00 but there are several UK specific options in my baseband selector. None for my provider (Vodaphone) so I am a bit cautious of changing this.
Once again any ideas would be gratefully received.
Flashed MS2Ginger2.1 with deblur patch. Working great. Thanks Walter79! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140839

same here.. it went away when using AOKP and CM10 roms.. but whenever im using htc sense based roms it seems to happen.. pretty damn annoying!
I also use SMS Backup+ to automate SMS and Call Log uploading to Google, on a Sense ROM (ARHD 21), and it's working without issue. Only Unknown entries are literally those with Unknown numbers.
Can't be a Sense-related problem. Must be something else.
