My phone ran completely dead earlier this evening and now I've run into a roadblock. I plugged it in to charge, and nothing. I thought my USB cord may have went bad on me so I tried another, no dice. I thought the charger might be bad so I tried a different one....nope. Needless to say I'm a bit worried my phone is bricked or something. I tried to power it into the recovery, but it is bone dead. I haven't flashed anything in a few weeks and this is a result of the battery simply dying.
I am leaving the battery out over night, hopefully solving the issue. What might be going on here? Could the battery be screwed?
When the battery dies completely, sometimes it won't charge or do anything for a while. This usually freaks people out, but by the next day it'll charge. Just leave it out, put it back in & try again. If that doesn't work, do it again. It might take a couple tries but it should eventually charge. I've never heard of it bricking a phone, though.
The only other possibility might be that the battery is fried. You can get replacement batteries pretty cheap on ebay.

Yeah I am hoping this is the case. The battery has never acted this particular way though. I'll leave it out overnight and check back in the morning.
Appreciate the response. Ease my mind a little haha.

You're battery is most likely toasted. Sometimes, as plainjane said, you'll get lucky and if you leave it plugged in long enough, it MAY start to charge. That's usually not the case though, and you'll probably need a new battery. LiPo batteries do not like to die completely, and when they do, it's possible (and likely) that it won't recieve a charge anymore. Sometimes you can get the battery to start charging again by using a direct wall charger, that your actual battery slides into on the wall (not in your phone). It has to do with the voltage of the battery dropping so low, that the software in the evo won't allow it to charge, for whatever reason. Just make sure that when you're trying to charge it, that it's plugged into the wall and not USB on your computer.

Yup, that seems to be somewhat of a common issue with certain Evo's. I always make sure to be extra easy on the USB cable, due to the Evo supposedly having weak solder joints where the USB connector attatches to the motherboard. But, if he said that he knows the battery died completely to 0, and then after that it won't turn back on, my money's on a failed battery.
ive had my batt since the phone came out no issues at all but ive seen the solder mess up peoples phone up alot with no charging, no usb connection and all that fun stuff just do what my brother did recall. all the older hardware do it eventually
Your battery is not fried.
If you're rather impatient, just drop it by a Sprint repair location and have them boost it on their cadex machine real fast. It'll trickle charge enough to turn the device on, then you can charge from there.
Well I left it out over night and all is well. I think I will pick up a new battery on ebay just in case. Meanwhile ill try to keep my battery from completely dying again haha. Thanks all.

So I recently I been noticing that my phone isnt holding its charge as great as it used to but i figured that was from my new job and its lack of cell coverage. Now this last week i have been noticing that I would hit the power button, the screen would go black but then 5seconds later the screen would come back on. Now as of 2 nights ago I cant even charge it. I changed cables and outlets. Went to two different outlets and now have it plugged into my pc. Still it just keeps it alive but not charged. Does this sound like a USB port issue or a battery. And if its battery where can I get one for cheap and fast. Thanks

You can find batteries pretty much anywhere on the internet from Ebay to Amazon. If you're replacing your battery, you may consider going with an extended one, just for the hell of it.
However, I doubt the battery is your issue. Your phone should recognize it's charging, even if your battery is having issues (to my knowledge).
Have you tried pulling your battery out, and then putting it back in and rebooting the phone?

There you go. 20 bucks. lol. but I'd search ebay for the best deal. The main part is the wall charger. they work wonders. the USB part of those wall charges are crap. easier to use your laptop.
well i removed the battery and now its charging. I will see if this works. I was looking into getting an extended battery I just dont want one sooo bulky.
btw, if it is charging off the phone. then you've likely been a dumbass and damaged the USB port. lol. in that case. you might get stuck with changing out two batteries daily until you get an evo 3d. :-D

I've had my phone do strange things like this as well. Pulling the battery is always my first thing before I actually go in depth on trying to figure out what the issue is.
More often than not, for random things like that, pulling the battery will fix it.
So I'm currently using the Suarom ROM, and for the most part it's been working fine. Suddenly I have a problem. Last night I plug my phone in to charge and suddenly it won't charge. I tried with two separate chargers.
It's still a new phone, so I can bring it in for warranty work. I just want to make sure I take all the steps necessary to "un void" the warranty. I'm a Rogers customer. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
Theres a thread in the DEV section that provides instructions of how to completely un-root and restore your device to factory before you turn it in for services.
The only problem is, my battery is at ten percent with no way to charge. The strange thing is that when I plug the phone in, the charging symbol appears. Just doesn't charge. Any idea why that would be ?

Tried different chargers? maybe plug it up to your PC see if you can get some juice that way? i can see the cable/charger going bad before the usb port on the phone ( but **** happens ) 10 percent should be good enough to get your phone back to stock though, i did it at 7 percent not to long ago, you just cant play around you have to click and run and get it done so it does not die. then if it dies after at least you are stock and can just turn it back in. but to be honest for a charger problem i VERY SERIOUSLY doubt they will be looking at Software and roms. thast a defect, and i think they will just do a clean swap----JUST LET IT DIE so they can not turn it back on in the store..lol
Ya could have a derpy battery and the phones fine.

Yeah, I have tried three chargers with no luck. Haven't tried a PC yet but will after work.
So if I'm getting the lightning bolt charging symbol, odds are it'llbe the battery rather than the port?
take it to best buy or an at&t store....and just say, hey i think i may have a bad battery do you have one i can use to see if my phone will power on and recognize the charger after it is plugged in. then you will know, unless you have an extra battery just laying around.
I had a similar problem like this before. Try charging with the phone off.
OR
If you want to troubleshoot and isolate the problem, try getting an external battery charger and a spare battery.
If you charge your stock battery and it charges with the external charger, your phone may be the problem. If not, then it's the stock battery.
And with the spare battery, try charging it via phone charger.
These are the possible ways I can think of at the moment. Hope this helps!
Last night my phone died after 2 days off cable due to me having to use my cord for another device. I plugged it in today to find that it wasn't charging at all. I decided to give it a few minutes before trying, thinking it may not be turning on because it still needs some juice. I waited 30 minutes and it wouldn't turn on still, just gave me the little animation of a battery draining to indicate that it needs to be charged. After this, I figured that it's possible the cable is just dead, so I opted to borrow a cable from my brother. The cable charges his phone just fine, but it doesn't work with charging my phone. I took a shower while waiting for it to perhaps get the juice it needed, and still no dice. I tried several different outlets thinking perhaps the outlet was dead, and still nothing.
I've had the phone for a little over a month, so I'm not sure how long I have to turn it in or not; I'd hope it'd be 3 months for factory issues, but judging from how people mention 14 days, I'd assume that they're eager to push responsibility of broken devices onto the customer as fast as they can. Do you guys have any idea of what could be wrong? Perhaps if it's possible for me to get a replacement at this point?
I've been running the Lifeless v.11 Rom for a while with no issues, I haven't flashed anything in possibly a week or two, so I honestly doubt this is a software issue. It's never been exposed to water, but then again I really don't trust phones to detect if they've been damaged or not since it seems even a humid day is enough for those small water damage detection stickers to run pink.

Pull your battery, try again

Yea, going to update this. Sprint was giving me issues and trying to cough up money from me, so I pulled the battery and cleaned the port with a q-tip and it charged fine again. I was in for a scare there, but it's back to life.
Same problem...didn't have to pull battery

Just wanted to chime in with my experience.
I had same issue. Battery completely drained with a visit to the relatives (low cell signal).
Got home and plugged it in for 5min, the "battery charging" animation came on when short pressing the power button.
Had to move the phone to a different charger for the night and noticed that I couldn't get it to even show the charging animation while on the charger. Indeed after 8 hours on the charger the next morning it still wouldn't turn on. I thought I would have to take it back to Best Buy. On a whim, I thought I would drain all of the capacitance from the system by pressing and holding the power button to see if that would allow it to restart the charge cycle. So I held the power button for about 30-45sec off the charger, then waited about 30min and plugged it in at work.
It worked. Not sure why, but I didn't have to return it to Best Buy, so I'm happy.
My phone isn't responding no matter what I do. I've tried a jig and every combination you could possibly think of to turn it on and nothing works. I didn't flash anything or drop it in any way so I am just wondering what could have happened? I had to get rushed to the hospital and I was there for a little over a week. My phone was left in my pants in my room and there it sat the whole time that I was in recovery.
Might be a battery gone bad friend. Your phone is definitely not bricked... But we must find a solution to the problem. Is it charging?
No that's the thing that has me confused. I figured it might be the battery cause I did leave it on and it obviously it had run out of power. I tried taking the battery out with just a usb cord in and nothing.
Usually they do a 2x short vibrate with the battery out. I had my D710 flake on me after overcharging once and come back after a week and a fresh battery. Replace the battery, then test. If no go, try to vet the new battery to ensure its a gold one and pack your phone in a rice bag for a week and repeat.
It would be very surprising if its truly bricked. If all else FSA and testing has been thorough, wrote a detailed letter to Sammy regardless of warranty status and see if they will back it. If you get rejectee call and don't mention prior attempt at begging. If you are well spoken and have thoroughly ensured its just a random failure you might be pleasantly surprised by their willingness to investigate.

I'll go get a new battery now and see if that works, thanks for the reply. Also it didnt get wet or anything. I took my pants off in my room and there it sat in my pocket till I got back.
Also if it were the battery wouldn't it still at least show that splash screen when you attach a usb cable?
What also helps is charging the phone on an apple charger. But charge it 3 days.
Apple charger: it will not load with full power.
I assume that the battery is below 2V.
And then nothing is displayed.
So it wasn't bricked it just had some water damage I guess. Thanks for all the help everyone
My M8 has no feedback whatsoever, even plugged into the HTC brand charger, nothing happens. However, I plugged it into a 2.1A charger and got the little battery charging logo to appear, still no boot. Is the battery dead? This started happening after switching from CWM to TWRP, should I try to get the phone to turn on and switch it back to CWM?
Leave the phone on charger for several hours, then try holding power+vol up for 30 seconds or so. See if there is any change.
I'll definitely try it. It's not easy to charge this though, as the charging port is pretty broken as well. I put it in this angle and it charges (usually)

This a pretty relevant detail. Probably more the issue than changing to TWRP. And to answer that question, no I would not switch back to CWM, since its obsolete on this device and no longer really supported.

Okay so I've been charging it since my last post. I just turned it on and it claims to have 1%. But hey! It's on!
Thank you!! I changed out the cable I was using to charge the phone (I was using the stock HTC cable, grabbed some random Asus cable) and plugged the 2.1A charger directly into the wall (previously using an extension cable) and after doing what you said, just letting it charge for several hours and then turning it on, I got a 24% charge!!! I guess this means I can just never let the phone die if I don't feel like having this issue again. Thanks!! Now I have two high end android phones again!

Good work! It should have been said before to always try different chargers and cords if suffering charging issues. I saw you had tried a different charger, but missed the fact that you used the same cable. Charger/cable are not always the issue, but at least you can easily eliminate those as the cause by some experimentation.
If you again discharge the phone to shutdown, and doesn't power on after charging; you can usually: charge for several hours, then hold power + vol up until it boots.
But that being said, discharging the phone to shutdown should usually be avoided. Most all of us have done it at some time or other. But one should not make it a habit. There are safeguards that are supposed to prevent battery voltage from dropping too low (by shutting down the phone once voltage reaches a certain threshold) but those safeguards are not ironclad. And once the voltage drops too low, you can be stuck in a tough spot. Plus, fully battery discharge/charge cycles are not best for long term battery life of Li ion batteries. So again, discharging the battery to shutdown should be avoided as much as possible.
I seem to have this exact issue now too. Even with the way the charging port has to be for it to charge. Unfortunately it seems the port is messed up somehow now or maybe the battery connections are bad.
Though I'm technically able to pull it apart i haven't done it yet. Maybe it knows it's now getting old lol
Looks like it's time to upgrade to a new phone for me. :/

Try putting it while pulling down and to the right of the cable. I held mine like that for an hour or two to make it turn on. Once I did so I opened ampere only to discover that even when it says it's charging, it's actually not. I have to angle it or the left to make it get power, even though just angling it upward makes it say it's charging.

Yeah I've had it say charging on and off for the last day and a half. But it seems that when I hit the "sweet spot" it just doesn't stay charging and then quickly discharges any bit of charge.

Happened to me too. Legit hold it in your hand for about 20 minutes. Turn it on as soon as possible to monitor the amperage
